Terrence Maurice Petty
SHELBY - Deacon Terrence Maurice Petty, 35, of 813 McGowan Road, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born May 12, 1966, in Cleveland County, he was a son of Betty Petty and Jamie Petty, both of Shelby. He was a graduate of Shelby High School and employed as a transporter for Century Care of Shelby. He was an ordained deacon and member of the New Jerusalem Rebirth & Restoration Ministries where he also served as a member of the Outreach and Evangelism Ministry. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Josephine Bostic and Edgar and Lois Petty. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Evangelist Margie Allen-Petty; five sons, Kebra Jones of Morganton, Tuborris Allen, Bruce Parks Jr., Wayne Gullatte Jr. and Travis Parks of the home; one daughter, Sierra Parks of the home; a granddaughter, Ahmyra Hollis of the home; a brother, Maurice Petty of Durham; a stepbrother, Kenny Raper of Shelby; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Javona and Frank Briscoe and Yevetta P. and Michael Kelly, all of Shelby; a stepsister, Charlene Byrd of Shelby; two brothers-in-law, Ron Allen of Charlotte and Jackie Allen of Morganton; five sisters-in-law, Rose Jefferies, Elsie Webber, Brenda Coleman, Patricia Allen and Cathy Robbs, all of Shelby; his stepmother, Mrs. Carolyn Coleman of Shelby; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Estelle Allen-Feaster of Shelby; a father-in-law and stepmother-in-law, the Rev. Cliff and Evangelist Mary Allen of Shelby; and stepgrandparents, the Rev. Sam and Inez Raper of Shelby. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at New Jerusalem Rebirth & Restoration Ministries with Bishop Zavier H. Terrill Sr. officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Webb-Memorial Lawns. Genesis Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

HIGH POINT - Mrs. Ethel Bell Dawkins, 59, of 1456 Kingsway Drive, died Thursday, March 7, 2002. 'Kathleen' Thompson
SHELBY - Mrs. Harriette "Kathleen" Crow Thompson, 75, of 417 W. Marion St., died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Maiden, she was a daughter of the late Minifee and Fannie Sigmon Crow. She taught Spanish for 32 years at Shelby High School. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and past member of Alpha Delta Kappa, N.C. Teachers Association and P.E.O. She was a devoted teacher and loved her students. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Hayward C. Thompson; her stepmother, Mary S. Crow; and a stepbrother, Albert S. Griffin. She is survived by her niece, Mary Anita Kahler, who was her daughter her whole life; a stepsister, Louise White of Fletcher; her nieces and nephews who were her grandchildren throughout her lifetime; and her great-great-niece, Nikki R. Bivens, who was like her great-great-granddaughter. A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with Dr. John Boggs officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.
Louvenia Watson
SHELBY - Mrs. Louvenia Allison Watson, 82, of 2334 China Ave, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Autumn Care of Forest City. A native of Cleveland County, she was born Feb. 12, 1920, to the late Lillie Canndey and John Esker Allison. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Watson; five brothers, John, Garold, Carl, Hubert and Floyd Allison; three sisters, Pearl Niven, Dorothy Allison and Isabella Littlejohn; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Allison and Dorothy Allison Hosch, both of Shelby; a niece who she raised, Gail Moore; two great-nieces, Connie and Becky; and a nephew, James. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Genesis Funeral Services. The family will receive friends tonight at 7 at the funeral home.
Stephen Surratt
MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. - Mr. Stephen B. Surratt, 39, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Cooper Medical Center in Camden, N.J. Born July 28, 1962, in Shelby he was the son of Barbara Surratt Daggs and the late Ralph E. Surratt. He attended grade school in Shelby and Lompoc, Calif. He was a graduate of Pemberton High School. He was previously employed by Local 454 in Atlantic City, N.J. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Melvin E. Daggs. In addition to his mother, he is survived by three brothers, Anthony Surratt, Curtis Surratt and Reginald Surratt; a sister, Catrina Hayes; his fiancée, Ramona Segars; his grandmother, Elizabeth Surratt of Shelby; his grandfather, Thomas Barnes of Shelby; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at World Harvest Christian Center in Pennsauken, N.J. Burial will be in Monument Cemetery in Beverly, N.J. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. W.R. Woody Funeral Home of Burlington, N.J., is in charge of arrangements.

SHELBY - Mrs. Olive Mae Weaver Shelly, 85, of 1550 Charles Road, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. Born in Buffalo, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Myrtle Foster Weaver. She was a teacher in elementary and special education. She was a member of New York State Teachers Association. She is survived by her husband, Francis Martin of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathlene and Leonard Hutchinson of Shelby and Lynn and Dennis Kephart of Lebanon, N.J.; four grandchildren, Matthew Hutchinson and his wife, Katie, Scott Hutchinson, Shelley Kephart and her fiancée, Chris Zimmer, and Brent Kephart and his wife, Tracy; and a great-granddaughter, Kylie Hutchinson. A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Meeting Place Church in Blacksburg, S.C., with the Revs. Lane Carter and Rick Robison officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Kathlene and Leonard Hutchinson, 504 James Love School Road in Shelby. Paul Jolley
MOORESBORO - Mr. Paul Jolley, 85, of 122 Shady Lane, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Charles Sr. and Darcus Friday Jolley. He was a lifetime member of Mundy's Chapel United Methodist Church and served on the trustee board. He served in the Army and was self-employed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Tanner Walton, Pauline Johnson and Ruby Jolley; and a brother, John Jolley. He is survived by three brothers, Charles Jolley Jr. of Mooresboro, Samuel Jolley of Forest City and Jahaeziel Jolley of Lenoir; and a sister, Madge Jolley of Far Rockaway, N.Y. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mundy's Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alvin Brown officiating. Burial will be in Young's Chapel Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and at other times at the home of his brother, Charles Jolley Jr., 124 Shady Lane in Mooresboro. Jack Shull
SHELBY - Mr. Jack Shull, 83, of Carolina Care Center of Cherryville, formerly of 2909 Highland Circle, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late M.H. and Lillie Revels Shull. He retired from Dover Mill as a weaver after 47 years. He was a Baptist. He was in the Army in World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Valdaree White Shull; and two brothers, Paul Shull and "Z.R." Shull. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry C. and Trina Shull of Kings Mountain; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela S. and Randy Jones of Kings Mountain; 10 grandchildren, Katie Shull, Bryan Shull, LaChrista Shull, Heather Ashley, Amanda Ashley, Todd Jackson, Tonya Jackson, Zackary Jones, T.G. Ashley and Daniel Ashley; and one great-grandchild, Haley Ashley. The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with Dr. Harold Fite and the Rev. SHELBY - Mrs. Elizabeth "Peggy" Daniels Cox, 93, of 1176 Wyke Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Century Care Center in Shelby. Born in Morgan County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Nancy Maude Hester Daniels. She was a retired bookkeeper for Kester Furniture and Charles Store. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church. She resided at Shelby Manor for the last five and a half years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Horace T. Cox, formerly of Cross Anchor, S.C.; four brothers, William Reese, James Melvin, Romayne and Sylvanus "Dan"; five sisters, Cleo Daniels, Mary Lou D. Harris, Nancy Maude Daniels, Martha A. Daniels and twin sister Lena Belle Daniels. She is survived by her friend and caregiver, Marietta Floyd of Shelby; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was Friday, March 1, 2002, at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Rev. John Boggs and Dr. Joe Reeves officiating. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery. The family received friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Howard McSwain
SHELBY - Mr. Howard McSwain, 74, of 3532 Artee Road, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Hospice of Cleveland County. A native of Cleveland County, he was retired from Celanese, where he worked for 26 years. He was a woodworker. He was a life member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, where he served as a former deacon, a choir member and a male chorus member and the mission team from Beaver Dam. He served in the Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sheiman and Docia Lee Brooks McSwain. He is survived by his wife, Lena Hamrick McSwain of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael McSwain of Lawndale and Rodney and Kimberly McSwain of Duncan, S.C.; two brothers, Hazel McSwain and Farris McSwain, both of Shelby; three sisters, Shirley Funderburke of Hickory and Janice Cabiness and Marcelle Hamrick, both of Shelby; three grandaughters, Hilary McSwain of Shelby and Kaila McSwain and Katie McSwain, both of Duncan; and a grandson, Paul McSwain of Shelby. The funeral will be today at 3:30 p.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Pruett and Dr. Paul Sorrells officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
