Ruth Hammill
GOLD HILL - Mrs. Ruth Goodman Hammill, 87, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Genesis Eldercare in Salisbury. Born Oct. 29, 1914, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Paul T. and Emma Arey Goodman. She was a graduate of Mitchell High School in Miesenheimer, which is now Pfeiffer College, and was a homemaker. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, where she was active in all phases of church work, and was active in genealogy, stitchery, knitting and quilting. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death on Sept. 2, 1981, by her husband, John Allen Hammill Sr. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John Allen Jr. and Rebecca Hammill of Gold Hill and Bobby Gene Sr. and Lynda Hammill of Kings Mountain; four grandchildren, Cheryl White, Nancy Cain, Bobby Gene Hammill Jr. and John Allen Hammill III, all of Gold Hill; one brother, Paul T. Goodman Jr. of Farmer; two sisters, Geneva Philips of Royston, Ga., and Rachel Hahn of Mount Pleasant; two great-granddaughters; and three great-grandsons. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Gold Hill with the Rev. Carlton Lucas officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Maybell Farris
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Maybell Parker Farris, 77, of Century Care, Shelby, and formerly of Kings Mountain, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Kannapolis, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Cordie Griffin Parker. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Mack Farris. She is survived by a sister, Ruby Wright of Grover; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. in the Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery in Clover, S.C. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Ethel Dawkins
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Ethel Bell Dawkins, 59, of 1456 Kingsway Drive, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Greensboro. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Bessie Bell and the late Isiah Bell. The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Church of God Prophecy, High Point. Ossie Mintz
SHELBY - Mrs. Ossie Curry Mintz, 78, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Century Care of Shelby. A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Amanda Smarr Curry. She was a homemaker and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Kingstown. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Mintz; four brothers; four sisters; a son; a daughter; three sons-in-law; a daughter-in-law; and three grandchildren. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Willie and Linda Mintz of Kingstown and James and Maggie Mintz of Detroit; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sarah C. Hoey and Elizabeth A. and Charles Borders, all of Shelby, and Linda K. and Donald Jackson of Kings Mountain; one sister-in-law, Ruth Mae Wilson of Shelby; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and two friends, Alberta Mintz and Margaret Surratt. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Shoal Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Michael Isaac and the Rev. Gene Pryor officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Jack Whelchel
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mr. Jack Whelchel, 71, of 218 Webster Road, died Monday at home. Graveside services will be today at 3 p.m. at Draytonville Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Robert Woodyard and Paul Reid officiating. The family will receive friends following the service and at other times will be at the home of John Whelchel, 650 White's Road, Gaffney. Arrangements are by White Columns Funeral Service.
David Pearson Sr.
BELMONT - Mr. David Obie Pearson Sr., 68, of Belmont-Mount Holly Road, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Born in Boiling Springs, he was a son of the late Jarvis and Verdie Blanton Pearson. He grew up in the Flint Hill community of Shelby, then lived in the Belmont area for 50 years. He was a retired machinist with Petty Machine Co. in Gastonia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jesse Irvin Pearson; and a sister, Doris Pearson Bright. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Harriett Langley Pearson of the home; two daughters, Sharon Pearson Franklin and Bonnie Pearson Hargett, both of Belmont; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David O. Pearson Jr. of Cramerton and Christopher Shane and Laura Moran Pearson of Mount Holly; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Elaine Pearson, Raymond Gerald and Joyce Pearson, and Dan and Jackie Pearson, all of Flint Hill; two sisters, Thelma P. Barnette of Charlotte and Betty Jean P. Cochran of Flint Hill; three grandchildren, Roger Dale Franklin Jr., Misty Leigh Graham and Hayley Marie Pearson; a great-grandson, Tyler Chase McAbee; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Bumgardner Chapel of McLean Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Lawing officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Deacon Terrence Maurice Petty
SHELBY - Deacon Terrence Maurice Petty, 35, of 813 McGowan Road, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was born May 12, 1966, in Cleveland County. He was the son of Jamie and Betty Petty, both of Shelby. He was a graduate of Shelby High School and employed as a transporter for Century Care of Shelby. He was an ordained deacon and member of the New Jerusalem Rebirth & Restoration Ministries, where he served as a deacon and a member of the Outreach and Evangelism Ministry. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Josephine Bostic, and his paternal grandparents, Edgar and Lois Petty. He is survived by his wife, Evangelist Margie Allen-Petty; five sons, Kebra Jones of Morganton, Tuborris Allen, Bruce Parks Jr., Wayne Gullate Jr. and Travis Parks of the home; a daughter, Sierra Parks of the home and a precious granddaughter, Ahmyra Hollis of the home; a brother, Maurice Petty of Durham; a stepbrother, Kenny Raper of Shelby; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Javona and Frank Brisco and Yvetta P. and Michael Kelly, all of Shelby; a stepsister, Charlene Byrd of Shelby; two brothers-in-law, Ron Allen of Charlotte and Jackie Allen of Margonton; five sisters-in-law, Rose Jeffries, Elsie Webber, Brenda Coleman, Patricia Allen and Cathy Robbs, all of Shelby; his stepmother, Mrs. Carolyn Raper-Petty, and a mother-in-law, Mrs. Estelle Allen-Feaster; a father-in-law and a stepmother-in-law, the Rev. Cliff and Evangelist Mary Allen; maternal grandfather, Evans Beam, Sr.; step-grandparents, the Rev. Sam and Inez Raper, all of Shelby; special nieces and nephews, Lamar Harrison, Anthony Harrison, Deidra Harrison, Kendra Kelly, Ashley Kelly; a special deceased buddy, Sam Eskridgs; and a host of relatives and friends. KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Lillian Caveny Spearman, 77, of 722 Dixon School Road, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at her home. Born in Cherokee County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late John Lester and Nora Elizabeth Spurling Caveny. She was retired from Mauney Hosiery Mill and a member of Oak View Baptist Church, where she was an active member serving in the choir, a Sunday school teacher and a member of The Young At Heart. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Danny Earl Spearman and Dennis Wayne Spearman; three brothers, Lester Caveny, Harlin Caveny and Robert Caveny; and a sister, Velma C. Bolin. She is survived by her husband, Earl L. Spearman of the home; a daughter, Rhonda M. Spearman of Kings Mountain; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Luther "Luke" and Parthenia Caveny and Marvin "Pete" and Shirley Caveny, all of Kings Mountain; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Bertie C. Hamm, Evelyn C. and Allen Graham. all of Kings Mountain. and Letha C. and Harrill Sheppard of Blacksburg, S.C. KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Tommy Ray White, 51, of 107 Bottom Road, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at his home. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of Muril Holtzclaw White of Shelby and the late Thomas White. He was employed by city of Gastonia as a computer analyst since 1998. He was a 1968 graduate of Shelby High School and a 1982 graduate of Gardner-Webb University. He served in the Army during the Vietnam Conflict. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Jill Hubbard; and mother-in-law, Mildred Hodge Henderson. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Terry Henderson White of the home; a son, Russell Thomas White of Charlotte; a daughter, Tonya Lynn White of Chapel Hill; two brothers-in-law, Gene Hubbard of Granite Falls, S.C., and Blaine Calvin Henderson and his wife, Karen, of Gaffney, S.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and David Clary of Shelby; and a sister-in-law, Sherry H. Gibson and her husband, Kenny, of Gaffney. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church with the Rev. Leland Kerr officiating. Walter Carpenter
MARION - Mr. Walter Lee Carpenter, 87, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Autumn Care in Marion. Born April 8, 1915, in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late David and Ellen Short Carpenter. He was employed by A. Blanton Grocery Co. for more than 27 years and after a brief retirement was employed by Marion Buick Co. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Men's Friendship Class. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Belvia Daves Carpenter. He is survived by a son, Roger Lee Carpenter of Asheville; two brothers, J.D. Carpenter of Polkville and James Carpenter of Elberton, Ga. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Hopewell United Methodist Church in Rutherford County. Burial will be in the church cemetery. SHELBY - Mr. Wayne Nathan Parrott, 45, of 109 Maple St., died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. A native of Shelby, he was the son of the late Randolph and Mary Stewart. He was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Nathan Parrott. MARION - Mrs. Leola Bame Wright, 81, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at The McDowell Hospital. Born Aug. 18, 1920, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late John Calvin and Mary Walton Bame. She retired from McDowell County Schools as supervisor. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Colon Paul Wright of the home; a daughter, Jane Elizabeth Wright of Marion; and a grandson, Michael Paul Fox of Chattanooga, Tenn.
