Brandon Shane Penland

Brandon Shane Penland, 27, of Marion, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at his residence.

Born June 21, 1977 in Burke County, he was a son of Ronald Penland and Alice Honeycutt Penland of Marion. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Carmen Honeycutt; his paternal grandmother, Hazel Penland; and an aunt, Kay Buchanan. Shane loved music and was a guitarist in the band Chaos.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Kevin Penland of Marion; a sister, Missie Stevens and husband, Bill, of Nebo; two nieces, Megan and Malorie Stevens, both of Nebo; his maternal grandmother, Arville Honeycutt of Marion and his paternal grandfather, Grover Penland, of Hillsboro. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Rev. Ronald Carpenter officiating. Interment will follow at the McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 30, 2004 at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mr. Arthur Ray Lowdermilk

Mr. Arthur Ray Lowdermilk, 86, died Saturday, December 25, 2004 at Britthaven. He was born April 7, 1918 in McDowell County and was son of the late Robert Lowdermilk and Betty Queen Lowdermilk.

He was a veteran of the U.S Army having served during WWII. He was retired from Burlington Industries where he worked for more than 50 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Hawkins Lowdermilk, brothers, Brad Laudermilk, Con Laudermilk, and Danny Laudermilk; sister, Pearl Bowman and step mother, Mae Houk Laudermilk.

He is survived by son, Gene Lowdermilk and wife Marie of Morganton; daughters, Linda Walker and husband Howard, and Betty Nelson and companion, Dennis Causby all of Morganton; grandchildren, Wendy B. Sisk and husband, Tony, Jr., Scotty G. Walker, Amber Wilson, Tyler Nelson and Emily Keathley and husband, Kenny, all of Morganton; great grandchildren, Macayla, Dakota, and Kaitlyn Brady and Ella Keathley

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday at Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Sid Houk presiding, Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Kirksey Funeral Home, Morganton is assisting the Lowdermilk family with the arrangements.

Raymond T. Williams

Raymond T. Williams, known to many as the “Bluebird man of Burke “, left this earth Monday, May 26, 2003. Born June 17, 1912 in Burke County, he was the son of the late Russell L. Williams and Bessie Orders Williams . In addition to his parents,his wife Lillian Denton Williams ; brothers Karey Williams, Clyde Williams, Clarence Williams and Clifford (Cotton) Williams preceded in death.

Mr. Williams was a faithful member of the Hopewell Baptist Church and a member of the Hopewell adult senior Sunday School class. He was an active member for many years of the North Carolina Bluebird Society and the National Blue Bird Association. He was a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

He is survived by: son Raymond Landres Williams and wife Beverly G. of Morganton; daughters Inez Williams and Pat Williams both of Morganton, Judy Williams Hager and husband Grady of Harrisburg N.C.; brother Ned Williams ; sisters Effie Williams, Myrtle Dale and Catherine Duckworth; his loving companion of many years Mildred Perry; grandchildren Barbara Kiker, Michael Williams, Marjory Benfield, R. Mark Buff, Kenneth Dula, Sharlene McCombs, Stacy Allen, Brandon Hager; step grandchildren Pamela Martin, Debra Waddell; great grandchildren Jennifer Kiker, Nick and Clay Williams, Allison and Emily Benfield, Patricia, Heather and Matthew Dula, Will Myers, Ben Buff, Ryan Cook, Kevin and Hunter McCombs, Alex, Holly and Dalton Allen, Justin Hager and step great grandchildren Spencer and Lucas Martin.

Funeral services will be 4:00 PM Friday, May 30, 2003 at Hopewell Baptist Church with the Reverends Homer Murdock and Timothy Holdt officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 till 8:30 Thursday at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton where Mr. Williams will remain until being place in the church thirty minutes prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the home of Landres Williams on Propst Road.

Memorials in Mr. Williams memory may be made to Hospice of Burke County, P.O. Box 209,Valdese N.C. 28690 or to Hopewell Baptist Church, 1112 Hopewell Road, Morganton NC 28655.

Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the Williams family with arrangements.

Ms. Linda Adelaide Adams

Ms. Linda Adelaide Adams, age 54, died Friday, October 17, 2003 at Grace Heights in Morganton. She was born to the late Hal Joseph and Lillian Adams McGinnis on April 22, 1949 in Burke County. She was a loving and generous person, and will be greatly missed.

Surviving are a brother, Harold Wade McGinnis of Hildebran; two nieces, Nichole and Elizabeth McGinnis; two grand nieces, Christina and Heather; adopted grandchildren, Heather Causby and Joy Lynn Clark; adopted families, the family of Hilda Farris, and Richard and Allen Causby; and best friends, Linda T. Stinnett (Mark) and Angela Causby Lail (Thomas).

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, October 20, 2003 at Burkemont Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Reverend Mark Pridgen and Reverend Eddie Bunton will officiate. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. on Sunday at Kirksey Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Burkemont Baptist Church Youth Fund, 4668 Burkemont Road, Morganton, NC 28655.

Mrs. Thelma J. Rickett

Mrs. Thelma J. Rickett, 88, of Marion, died Friday, July 2, 2004.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 2004 at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion. Committal services were conducted in the chapel at the conclusion of the funeral services.

The family received friends prior to the services.

Kirksey Funeral Home of Marion is serving the Rickett family.

Mr. Harry Truman Stroud

Mr. Harry Truman Stroud, 57, of Marion, died Sunday, December 26, 2004, at The McDowell Hospital. Born June 6, 1947, in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Oliver Troy Stroud, Sr. and Barnard McKinney Stroud. He attended Landmark Baptist Church where he served as Deacon.

A loving husband and father, Mr. Stroud leaves behind to cherish his memory, in addition to his mother, a wife, Mrs. Ruby Stroud, of Marion; two sons, Reggie Stroud and wife Rebecca, of Marion, and Jeremy Stroud and wife Allison, of Clayton, NC; three brothers, John Stroud and wife Hazel, of Union Mills, NC, Oliver Troy Stroud, Jr. of Asheville, NC, and Glenn Stroud and wife Patsy, of Marion; one sister, Margaret Wilson and husband Coy, of Marion; one granddaughter, Brooke Stroud, of Marion, and one step-grandson, Garatt Jackson, of Marion. Also surviving is the family cat, Zack.

Funeral Services for Mr. Stroud will be held 11AM, Wednesday, December 30, 2004, at Hicks Chapel Baptist Church with Reverends Billy Forbes, Bob Buhel, and Ken Burleson officiating. Interment will follow at the Stroud Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6PM – 8PM, Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at the McCall Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion.

Danny Hugh Wood

Danny Hugh Wood, age 56, of Marion, N.C. died May 26, 2003 at Memorial Mission Hospital.

Born in McDowell County to the late Cecil Wood and Annie Maria Russell, he was employed by NC Dept. Employment Security Commission as an Auditor and a Veterans Representative. He was also a Veteran of the Marine Corps where he served in Vietnam as a Lance Corporal.

Surviving are his step-father, James Bolin of Chesnee, SC; one daughter, Anna Cable of Marion; three brothers, Vernon Wood and wife, Shirley, of Old Fort, Nick Wood and wife, Kim, of SC and Bobby Wood and wife, Sue, of SC; two sisters, Rose Holland and husband, John and Judy Thompson all of SC; two grandchildren, Noah and Kennedy; two special grandchildren, Melisa Ashley Tate and Tayla Lynnzie Wood.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Thursday, May 29, 2003 at McCall Memorial Chapel at Kirksey Funeral Home with Rev. Ernest Harris officiating. Burial will be at 12 o’clock at the Veteran’s Cemetery, in Black Mountain. The Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at Kirksey Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to: Shriners Hospital – 2100 N. Pleasantburg Dr. Greeneville, SC 29609.

Mr. Brownlow Gray

Mr. Brownlow Gray, 87, of Bethel Street, Morganton died Saturday October 25, 2003 at Autumn Care of Drexel. Born September 18, 1916 in Nebo he was the son of the late Pleasant Avery Gray and Elnina Branch Gray. His wife of fifty six years Martha M. Grady Gray, infant son David Gray; brothers Roy Gray, William Gray, James Gray, Hoit Gray, Richard Gray, Harold Gray ; sisters Nell Crowder, Mary Whisnant and Edna Gray preceded him in death.

Mr. Gray was a member of the Oak Forest United Methodist Church in Morganton and had graduated from Nebo High School in 1935. He had worked for Burke Tannery, Burke Dairy, Morganton Home Laundry and had retired from Broughton Hospital.

He is survived by: son Bennett Gray and wife Sue of Cornelius; daughter Jeanette Gray Kramer and husband Wayne of Crofton Maryland; grandchildren Angela Lambert, Steve Kramer, Stacy Kramer; great grandchildren Christopher Lambert, Kelsey Lambert, Justin Kramer and a sister Adlee Black.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at Oak Forest United Methodist with the Reverend Roderick Randolph officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 till 8:30 Monday, October 27, 2003 at Kirksey Funeral in Morganton.

Mr. Joseph H. Allison

Mr. Joseph H. Allison, 67, of Old Fort, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, December 26, 2004, at Mission Hospitals, St. Joseph Campus. Born in McDowell County May 18, 1937, he was a son of the late Fred Allison and Essie Griffin Allison. Mr. Allison was a member of the Greenlee Baptist Church and a Veteran, having served in the US Army.

Mr. Allison is survived by, his wife, Edith Duncan Allison, of the home; Daughters, Jeannie Ledford and husband, Jeffrey & Jill Ward and husband, Bobby, all of Marion; Joanna Guy and husband, Darrell, of Old Fort; Sisters, Jean Creekmore and husband, Robert, of Old Fort and Margie Harmon, of Hickory;

His loving grandchildren, Tyler Allison, Elijah Ledford, Jacob Ward, William Ward, Arianna Guy & Alexander Guy and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Allison will be held 3:00PM, Wednesday, December 29, 2004, in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home with the Reverends Ricky Mason and Coy H. Jeans, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 1:00PM-2:30PM, prior to the Services at the Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Greenlee Baptist Church Building Fund.

Reuben Hugo Knorr

Reuben Hugo Knorr, age 76, of Marion, N.C. died May 3, 2003 at his residence.

Born in Medford, Wisc. to the late Reuben A. Knorr and Frieda Schmidt Knorr he was a retired employee of Couse Air Conditioning Corp and a veteran of the US Army Air Force. He attended Turkey Cove Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Wilburn Knorr; one son, Glen A. Knorr and wife, Rebecca of Swannanoa, N.C.; Susan K. Jowers of Marion, N.C.; one brother, Roy Knorr and wife, Cordy of Mantiwoc, Wisc.; two sisters, Grace Pagel and husband, Herman and Betty Schlais and husband, Lawrence of Medford, Wisc.; two grandchildren, Phillip Knorr and Jennifer Knorr.

A memorial service will be held 4:00 o’clock Thursday, May 8, 2003 at Turkey Cove Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Hollifield officiating.

Memorials may be made to: Hospice of McDowell County – 218 N. Logan Street – Marion, N.C. 28752.

Mr. Jesse Marvin Paschall Sr.

Mr. Jesse Marvin Paschall Sr., 87, of North Green Street in Morganton died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at College Pines Nursing Center in Valdese. Born April 28, 1916 in Wilkes County, Georgia he was the son of the late Samuel Hoarce Paschall and Berta Thornton Paschall. Brothers Samuel Paschall Jr., Oscar Paschall, Thomas Paschall; sisters Virginia Stephens, Sarah Hardin and Mary Lou Price preceded him in death.

Mr. Paschall was a faithful member for many of the Quaker Meadows Presbyterian Church where he had served as an Elder and had retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture after forty six years. He was a member and past president of the Oak Hill Ruritan Club and had served as Zone Governor for the Ruritan National. He had been Past President of the Oak Hill Recreation Foundation.

He is survived by: his wife of sixty six years Beadie Whisenant Paschall of the home; son J. Marvin Paschall Jr. and wife Dorothy of Morganton; grandchildren J. Marvin Paschall III and wife Laura of Hickory, Susan Woodall and husband Gary of Harrison Tennessee, Major Benton O’Neal Paschall and wife Joan of Beaufort; six great grandchildren; brother J.L. “Jake” Paschall; sisters Reba Clay of Stanford Virginia and Eunice Mansfield of Washington Georgia.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at the Quaker Meadows Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Andrew B. Parkey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6:30 till 8:00 Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at Kirksey Funeral in Morganton.

Memorials in Mr. Paschall memory may be made to the Quaker Presbyterian Church, 2682 U.S. Highway 181, and Morganton, NC 28655 or to Hospice of Burke County, P.O. Box 1029, Valdese NC 28690
