A graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. in City Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Key officiating. The family will receive friends after the services at the home. Carpenters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GASTONIA - Mrs. Christine Sims Russell, 55, of 323 Mountain View Road, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at New Ellis Baptist Church with the Rev. Ponder officiating. Burial will be in Webb Lawns Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and at other times at the home of her mother-in-law, Jenie Eskridge Bell, 2401 Elizabeth Ave., Shelby. Genesis Funeral Service and Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Gustee Williams
SHELBY - Mrs. Gustee Richard Williams, 87, formerly of 1225 Caldwell St., Charlotte, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. She retired from Carolinas Medical Center as a nurse and was a member of Casar Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Augustus and Della Lindsey Richard; and a sister, Mary Lou Palmer. She is survived by two sons, David Williams of Casar and Eddie Williams of Polkville; a daughter, Martha Williams of Charlotte; a sister, Doshia Hall of Oxford; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Lutz-Austell Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred Mauney officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes. Association, 3109 Poplarwood Court, Suite 125, Raleigh, NC 27604-1043; or the Casar Baptist Church's Chime Fund.

MOORESBORO - Mrs. Mary Ruppe Blankenship, 58, of 126 Barkley Drive, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. William Swink, Ron Cooper and John Edwards officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen.

Violet Dunaway
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Violet Greene Dunaway, 85, of 1895 Old Caroleen Road, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen, with the Revs. Barry Keys and Dean Akers officiating. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. in Mountain Rest Cemetery in Wilkesboro. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the funeral home.

Nellie Hollifield
CHERRYVILLE - Nellie Stroupe Hollifield, 89, of 1407 E. Church St., died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Key and Kenneth Gibson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Carpenter's Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her son, Michael Hollifield, Eaker Drive, Cherryville.

Mabel Modlin
SHELBY - Mrs. Mabel Gunter Modlin, 98, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002. Born April 4, 1903, in Lexington County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Christopher C. and Marie Cook Gunter. She was a resident of Winston-Salem for most of her life. Upon moving to Shelby in 1982, she became an active member of Poplar Springs Baptist. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband who died in 1975, Joseph S. Modlin. She is survived by a daughter, Marie Modlin Whiteheart, and a son-in-law, Dale, both of Shelby; and two grandchildren, Lisa of Durham and Grant of Raleigh. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Vogler's Main Street Chapel in Winston-Salem. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 401 E. Sprague St., Winston-Salem, NC 27127; or to Poplar Springs Baptist Church, 1106 Poplar Springs Church Road, Shelby, NC 28152.

Garland Hopper
SHELBY - The Rev. Garland Hopper, 80, of Century Care Nursing Home, died Monday, March 11, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Hoyle and Early Borders Hopper. He was a member of Ellis Chapel Baptist Church and was formerly employed by Cleveland Container Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Helene Hopper; a son, Hazel Lee Hopper; three sisters, Janie Fox, Mayola Hopper and Neonomia McClure; five brothers, Smiley Hopper, Elbert Hopper, Sonny Hopper, Amos Hopper, Marion Reed and Fitchue Hopper. He leaves to cherish fond memories, five sons, Paul Hopper, Garland Hopper Jr., Robert Hopper, Lemanuel Hopper and Walter Hopper, all of Shelby; six daughters, Mary Maddox, Sarah Gill, Betty Archie, Carolyn Adams, Willie Mae Hopper, all of Shelby, and Rosalee Williams of Swainsville; 25 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Ellis Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. W.B. Ellis officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and other times at 224 Southfork Drive in Shelby. Enloe's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Ethel Hall
CHARLOTTE - Ms. Ethel Lee Hall, 85, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Beverly Health Care Renaissance. A native of Atlanta, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Bud and Lottie Thomas Black. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hall; two sons, Palmer Lee Stafford and Clarence Hoyle; and a brother, Claude Boykins. She leaves to cherish fond memories, two sons, Bailey Hoyle of Charlotte and Elvis Hoyle of Shelby; six daughters, Fannie Hoyle of Charlotte, Sarah Gilyard, Lily Wray, Brenda Hoyle and Judy Freeman, all of Shelby, and Vernessa Otey of Manassas, Va.; 19 grandchildren; and 45 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Maple Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert L. Dover and Dr. S.A. Raper officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church and other times at 2032 Green Oak Drive, Shelby. Enloe's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Christine Russell
GASTONIA - Mrs. Christine Sims Russell of 323 Mountain View Road, received the final call of God Sunday, March, 10, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. The vines of her life were rooted in Cleveland County, Shelby. She was born Aug. 24, 1946, to the late Joseph "Jack" and Effie Lou Barnett Sims. She was a former member of Lawndale Baptist Church, where she gained her foundation in the Lord. She obtained her education in the public schools of Cleveland County. She attended Carolina Medical School of Nursing where she obtained a Surgical Technicians License. On June 14, 1964, she married Isaiah Russell. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph "Shy" Sims and James Matthew Sims. She leaves to cherish her memories, her loving and devoted husband of 38 years, Mr. Isaiah Russell; a daughter and son-in-law, Alvon and Gene Freeman of Rock Hill, S.C.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Derrick Russell of Atlanta, Ga., Gregory and LaVonne Rusell of Winston-Salem, Brandon and Nikki Russell of Shelby, Shun and Jennifer Russell of Landensburg, Pa.; five sisters and four brothers, Rosie Brooks, Pauline Wright, Hazel Cherr, Theresa Gullatte, Willie B. Sims and Johnny Sin, all of Shelby; 14 grandchildren, Erica, Corey, LaJuan, Quan, LaQuita, O'Brian, Markesha, Brandy, Jazz, Nia, Brittany, Christopher, Devin; and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at New Ellis Baptist Church with the Rev. Ponder officiating. Burial will be in Webb Lawns Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and other times at the home of her mother-in-law, Mrs. Jenie Eskridge Bell at 2401 Elizabeth Ave. in Shelby. Genesis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kevin Frank
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Petty Officer First Class Kevin John Frank, 39, of 744 Althea St., Beaufort, S.C., died Sunday, March 10, 2002. Born in Ogdensburg, N.J., he served in the Navy for 21 years and was currently stationed as a Naval Corpsman at Naval Hospital Beaufort and was assigned to the Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, as a search-and-rescue corpsman. He is survived by his wife, Scarrlette Lovelace Frank of the home, formerly of Kings Mountain; two stepsons, Taylor Wilkey and Christopher Wilkey, both of Beaufort; a daughter, Brittany Frank of Salisbury, Md.; a brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Bridgett Frank of Brooklyn, N.Y. A private funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Brackett and Dr. Tony Fulbright officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars, POW/MIA Group, 2831 The Plaza, Charlotte, NC 28205.

Oveda Shehan
SPINDALE - Mrs. Oveda Owens Shehan, 96, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Oak Grove Health Care Center. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Piedmont Baptist Church with the Rev. Shane Duncan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Crowe's Funeral Home, Rutherfordton. Onie Littlejohn
CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Onie Bridges Littlejohn, 90, of 209 W. Fourth St., died Monday, March 11, 2002, at Carolina Care Center in Cherryville. Born Aug. 12, 1911, in Winston County, Miss., she was a daughter of the late Lawson Bridges and Nancy "Nannie" Mauney Bridges. She retired from Ora Mill in Shelby. She was a member of First Baptist Church, the Lib Holleman Sunday School Class and the Pearl Elliott Circle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Littlejohn, and a son, Rev. Jimmy Littlejohn. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Don Littlejohn of Cherryville and Randy and Denise Littlejohn of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Yates Farris of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a sister, Ollie Clark of Granite Falls; a daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Littlejohn of Memphis, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Dr. Jimmy Littlejohn of Kingsport, Tenn., Jonathan Littlejohn of Collinwood, Tenn., Joy Atkinson of New Bern, Yates Farris and Brad Farris, both of Charlotte, Shanna Littlejohn of Hickory and Lindsey Littlejohn of Shelby; and 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Revs. Joel Jenkins and Perry Holleman officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 301 E. James Whitesides Sr.
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. James B. Whitesides Sr., 59, of 307 Campbell Circle, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. The funeral will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Vestibule AME Zion Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church. Frances Owens
BLACKSBURG, S.C. - Mrs. Frances Earline Byars Owens, 75, of 910 Cherokee Falls Road, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at her home. Born in Cherokee County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Claude and Clara Hughey Byars. She was a member of Christian Fellowship Church. She was a retired textile employee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Owens. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry W. and Barbara Owens of Toledo, Ohio; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Gerald Wyatt of Shelby; six grandchildren, Alfred Burnett and Janet Philbeck both of Shelby, Libby Campbell of Kings Mountain, Joseph Owens, Jeff Owens and Sandy Molinet of Toledo; two sisters, Betty Lou Smiley and Maxine Mullins, both of Gaffney, S.C.; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Draytonville Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Willie Lanier officiating. Pallbearers are Paul Bears, Jody Owens, Jeff Owens, Carl Lee Burnett, Jeff Upchurch, Jody Upchurch and Chris Upchurch. The family will receive friends at the home. KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Sue Weaver Carroll, 69, of 905 Church St., died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Ira Allen and Corrie Huffstetler Weaver. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Kings Chorus, The Golden Fellowship, and the Lydia Sunday School Class. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, George N. Carroll Sr. of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, George Nelson Jr. and Carolyn Carroll of Bessemer City, Arthur Allen Sr. and Jessie Carroll of Kings Mountain and Phillip Edward and Denice Carroll of Chicago; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy Carroll and Ken Bridges of Kings Mountain and Dorothy C. and Fred Adkins Jr. of Colonial Heights, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, J.B. and Sue Weaver of Kings Mountain; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Jack Chaney of Kings Mountain; 14 grandchildren, Angela Parsley and her husband, John, Rebecca Hunt and her husband, Sam, Randi Carroll, Kenny Bridges, Laura Bridges and Allen Carroll, all of Kings Mountain, John Carroll and his wife, Mia, and Mark Carroll, all of Bessemer City, Theron Carroll of Norfolk, Va., Gina Adkins, Fred Adkins III, both of Colonial Heights, Va., Jacob Carroll, Thomas Carroll, and Michael Carroll all of Chicago; and three great-grandchildren, Summer Carroll, Christian Parsley and Hallie Hunt.
