CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Mary Oates Hallman, 56, of 2009 Seashore Road, Supply, formerly of Cherryville, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. Born July 19, 1945, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of Ray Oates Sr. of Waco and the late Ethel Juanita Moses Oates. She worked as manager at Burger King in Shalotte. She belonged to Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Shelby. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard Oates Jr., Jerry Oates and Will Oates. In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Wendell Lewis "Pete" Hallman of the home; a son, Michael Hallman of Cherryville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Tammy and Steve Mayhew of Cherryville, Wendy H. and Johnny Blanton of Polkville and Donna Hallman of Supply; two brothers, Bob Oates of Waco and Rick Oates of Asheville; two sisters, Jean Paige of Georgetown, S.C., and Louise Lovelace of Shelby; and 11 grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at City Memorial Cemetery, with the Revs. Alton Martin and Jim Richardson officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Tammy and Steve Mayhew, 121 Victoria Road, Cherryville.
Dennis Childers Sr.
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mr. Dennis Childers Sr., 50, of 401 E. O'Neal St., died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Born in Cherokee County, S.C., he was a son of the late William Dennis and Betty Dean Allison Childers. He retired from Hamrick Mills, where he was a roving tender. He is survived by his wife, Nelda Benton Childers; two sons, Dennis Childers Jr. and John Childers of Gaffney; two sisters, Sylvia Batchelor of Blacksburg, S.C., and Modean Kaye of Palatka, Fla.; a brother, David Childers of Kings Mountain; and three grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary Chapel in Blacksburg, with Dr. Ray St. John officiating. Burial will be in Clingman Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Gordon Mortuary, and at other times at 147 Petty Drive, Gaffney.

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mrs. Ruby Mullinax McAbee, 71, of 209 Rolling Mill Road, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Revs. Dean Painter and Tommy Wright officiating. The family will receive friends at the home. Edwin Cline
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Edwin Haywood Cline, 92, of 2784 Clineland Road, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at Carolina Care Center, Cherryville. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church and was a farmer of cotton, wheat and corn. He, "Daddy Cline," was owner of Clineland Dairy Inc., and, after semi-retirement, he owned Clineland Center, where he and his family promoted horse shows for the youth of the community. Mr. Cline was an avid foxhunter and had a deep love for the Cleveland County Fair, in which he played a great role in the past. He was preceded in death by the following: his father, Zeb Vance Cline; his mother, Pearl Borders Cline; his wife, Joan Rothrock Cline; two brothers, James Lamar Cline and Zeb Vance Cline Jr.; two sisters, Clayton Hord Putnam and Marylou Cline Putnam. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Cline and Harry Gene Gold of Shelby; a daughter, Joan Cline Backhaus of Cherryville; two brothers, John Dixon Cline of Cherryville and A.B. Cline of Shelby; three grandchildren, John Edley Lattimore and his wife, Kandice, of Cherryville, Jennifer Gold, of Mayhill, N.M., and Vickie Gold Beam and her husband, Gary, of Kings Mountain; and two great-grandchildren, Lacey Joanna and Brittany Leigh Beam of Kings Mountain. A graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church, with the Revs. Cline Borders and Terry Jordan officiating. The family received friends Sunday, and at other times will be at the home of Joan Cline Backhaus. Memorials may be made to Elizabeth Baptist Church or to Carolina Care Center of Cherryville. Dale Owens
SHELBY - Mr. Dale Owens, 42, of 601 N. Lafayette St. Apt. B, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. Born Aug. 8, 1959, in Cleveland County, he was the son of Jessie Owens of Shelby and Irene Hardin Owens Gourley of Shelby. He served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clifford Dexter Owens and Essie Mae Johnson Owens and Joe Hardin and Naomi Bowen Hardin; and two nieces, Melanie Elain Melton and Amanda Nicole Smith. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Wanda Stafford Owens of the home; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Debbie and Leroy Melton, Fonda and Mark Grayson and Denise and Billy Yancy of Shelby, Reda and Russell Barnes of Clover, S.C., and Ronda and Danny Smith of Waco; a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. The funeral will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Harmony Independent Baptist Church, 920 College Ave., Shelby, with the Rev. Leroy Melton officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the home of Denise and Billy Yancy, 727 Polkville Road, Shelby. SHELBY - Mrs. Ruby Lee Petty Brown, 66, formerly of 805 Buffalo St., died Friday, March 15, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late John and Maehelia Glenn Petty and a native of Cleveland County. She belonged to Hopewell Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Flossie Robinson, Edna Logan and Louis Woods; and two brothers, Roscoe Petty and Isaiah Petty. She leaves to cherish fond memories three sisters, Mary Joe Petty and Jane Chambers of Shelby and Ionia Moore on Kings Mountain; one brother-in-law, William Moore of Kings Mountain; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lawrence Roseboro officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Sphinx Swaringen
LAKE LURE - Mr. Sphinx Rand Swaringen Sr., 63, of Rt. 1 Boys Camp Road, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock following a brief illness. A native and resident of Ruther-ford County for most of his life, he was formerly employed at Steelcase. In his earlier years he was a former motorcycle police officer with the city of Shelby. He later joined the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department as a deputy sheriff and in 1973 he joined the city of Lake Lure's Police Department, where he served as chief of police until December 1983. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and had served in the United States Air Force. He was a son of the late Joseph Clifton Swaringen and Vera Vivian O'Conner Swaringen. Surviving are his daughter, Laura Ann Swaringen of Hendersonville; two sons, Sphinx Rand Swaringen Jr. of Spruce Pine and Byron Kent Swaringen of Fingerville, S.C.; four grandchildren, Jeromy Rand Swaringen, Samantha Rae Swaringen, Whitney Marie Swaringen and Robert Christopher Johnson; two sisters, Fraulein Beio of Greensboro and Mary Elsner of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a brother, Joe R. Swaringen of Greensboro; an aunt, Marjorie Wallen of Rutherfordton; and eight nieces and nephews. No services are planned. Memorials may be made to the Elizabeth House, Four Season's Hospice, P.O.
