KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Bessie Medley West, 85, a resident of White Oak Manor, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at White Oak Manor. Born in Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Mae Davis Medley. She was a homemaker and member of Temple Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Leonard West; a daughter, Janice Kay West; and an infant son, Leonard West. She is survived by a son, Donald J. West of Kings Mountain; three grandchildren, Donald Shane West, Donald Jason West and Todd Hudson; a brother, Robert Medley of Columbia, S.C.; and two sisters, Beatrice Sims of Kings Moujntain and Fannie R. Short of Cherryville. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home with the Rev. David Turner officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

UNION MILLS — Mrs. Libby Arena Davis Mills, 93, of 4620 Hudlow Road, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at her home. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Piney Ridge Christian Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. Johnny L. Searight officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

CLIFFSIDE — Mrs. Sudie Hamrick Crocker, 98, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Cleveland County, and a daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Green Hamrick. She retired from Cone Mills, Cliffside Plant, and was a member of Cliffside Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Archie E. Crocker Sr. She is survived by a son, Archie E. Crocker Jr. of Charlotte; four daughters, Donnis C. Jarrell of Boiling Springs, Nellie C. Crook of Blacksburg, S.C., Shirley C. Frye of Cliffside and Eunice Ann C. Melton of Shelby; a sister, Selma H. Harris of Mooresboro; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cliffside Baptist Church with the Revs. William Stroud and Charlie Blackwell officiating. Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. GROVER — Mr. Hood Watterson, 86, of 146 Watterson Road, Blacksburg, S.C., died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late J.D. and Bessie Grigg Watterson. He retired as owner and operator of Watterson Plumbing, a member of First Baptist Church in Grover and served in the Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Pauline Norman Watterson of Blacksburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Gene and Ruth L. Watterson of Akron, Ohio, and Richard Norman and Betty Watterson of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Norma Kay and Jerry Bowen of Blacksburg; a sister-in-law, Myra Watterson of Shelby; and three grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Tony Fulbright officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Kings Mountain. LAWNDALE — Mr. Clyde Gene Short, 65, of 346 E. Main St., died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. Born Nov. 22, 1936, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late Zeno Guy and Lula Estelle Lingerfelt Short. He retired from Highland House Furniture Co. Inc. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Short and Bill Short; and two sisters, Dorothy Sigmon and Shirley Swink. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Rosa Swink Short of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Angie Short of Hickory and Joe and Donna Short of Polkville; a stepson and his wife, Tommy and Sarah Swink of Tennessee; a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Ned Sigmon of Lawndale; two brothers, Ronald Short and Harvey Short, both of Lawndale; a sister, Helen Hudson of Morganton; and five grandchildren, Ashley Short, Kayley Sigmon, Jennifer Short, Matthew Sigmon and TJ Swink. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with the Revs. Cecil Buff and Norris Willis officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park. Roy Wright
LAWNDALE — Mr. Roy Allen Wright, 57, of 453 Casar-Belwood Road, died Monday, March 18, 2002, in Lincoln County. Born Nov. 11, 1945, in Spencer, W.Va., he was a son of Lena Alice Lipscomb Watts of Lincolnton and the late Roy Allen Wright. He was employed as a residential brickmason. He served in the Army during the Vietnam Conflict. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Hazel Dian Mullinax Wright of the home; three sons, Scott Wray and Sam Wray, both of Polkville, and Jamey Wright of Lawndale; a daughter, Nichole Wright of Lawndale; two sisters, Ann Marie Williams and Mary Alice Michle, both of Canton, Ohio; two granddaughters, Ashley Willis and Marie Wray; and a grandson, Andrew Willis. The funeral will be Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Mullinax officiating. The family will receive friend tonight from 6 to 7:30 at the funeral home. Thomas McGraw
BOILING SPRINGS — Mr. Thomas J. “Tom” McGraw, 76, of 137 Gordon Avenue, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Whitmire, S.C., he was born July 12, 1925, the son of the late John Walker and Eva Wood McGraw. He was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After he completed a Master’s Degree from Appalachian State Teacher’s College, he went to Gardner-Webb College as Vice-President in charge of fund-raising and public relations. In 1970, he became Executive Vice-President at Gardner-Webb and served in that capacity for eight years. When he left in 1978, he was serving as acting President. He then went on to join the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina as chief deputy clerk and upon his retirement Dec. 31, 1993, after 15 years of service had been promoted to Clerk. He is survived by his wife, Bettye Falls McGraw of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Terry Frick of Southlake, Texas, Meloni and Tony Wray of Shelby and Mitzi and Barry Johnson of Boiling Springs; a brother, Guy McGraw, of Forest City; a sister, Thelma Moore of Forest City; six grandchildren, James Frick and Jeffrey Frick of Southlake, Texas, Tyler Wray and Luke Wray of Shelby and Hannah Johnson and Clay Johnson of Boiling Springs. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Boiling Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Carroll Page officiating. A private burial will be held at Cleveland Memorial Park. CASAR — Mrs. Margaret Eunice McNeilly Seagle, 70, of 206 Moriah School Road, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born March 17, 1932, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Julius Alvin McNeilly and Bessie Newton McNeilly. She retired as a self-employed beautician. She was a member of New Home United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Norris Winfred Seagle of the home; a son, Joe Seagle of Shelby; a grandson, Jody Seagle of Connelly Springs; a sister, Helen Newton of Casar; three brothers-in-law and their spouses, Kenneth Seagle, Bill and Christine Seagle, all of Lawndale, and Ralph and Sara Ann Seagle of Charlotte; three sisters-in-law and their spouses, Norita Warlick, Martha and Bob Short, all of Lawndale, and Phyllis and Steve Sarratt of Earl; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Betty Peeler, J.W. and Carol Hunt and family, Anther Brackett, Louise Dubesko and Carol Meade, all of Casar, Jack and Mary Sue Boyles and family of Lawndale and Robin Seagle of Connelly Springs.
