SHELBY — Mrs. Mary Cynthia “Cindy” Van Dyke Jones, 60, of 405 Poplar Springs Church Road, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 21, 1942, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of Prue Hill Van Dyke of Waco and the late Jim Van Dyke. She was a homemaker and member of Landmark Baptist Church. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee Van Dyke and Ray Van Dyke. In addition to her mother, she is survived by a brother, Jim H. Van Dyke of Lincolnton; two sisters, Peggy Beaver and Joy Kay Davis, both of Lincolnton; and a special friend, Oliver N. Oaks of Shelby. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with the Revs. Doug James, Rufus Davis and Allen Davis officiating. Burial will be in Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Juanita Wilson
SHELBY — Mrs. Juanita Porter Wilson, 80, of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center. Born April 19, 1921, in Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late John and Carolyn Davidson Porter. She was married May 8, 1943, at Swannanoa Presbyterian Church to John H. Wilson Jr., who preceded her in death. She retired from Shelby City Schools as a teacher. She was an elementary school teacher for 39 years, teaching in Forest City, Fort Bragg, Greensboro, Winston-Salem and Shelby. She was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church. Her faith in Jesus was lived out each day by the love she gave to her family, friends and many school children she taught. She was a member of the Presbyterian Women and the Ladies Bible Class. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John D. and Marilyn Wilson of Kings Mountain and Stephen P. and Pam Wilson of Statesville; two granddaughters, Kerry Wilson and Stephanie Wilson, both of Statesville; seven sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary Tweed of Sylva, Madge Webber of Riverton, Wyo., Polly Wilson of Webster; Agnes and Hugh Johnson of Waycross, Ga., Jane and Gene Lavage of Waynesville, Becky and Wade Wilson of Dillsboro and Helen and Hal Wilson of Brentwood, Tenn. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Sunset Cemetery. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church with Dr. Luke Harkey officiating. Montrose DeVane Sr.
LENOIR — Mr. Montrose L. DeVane Sr., 79, of 412 Arlington Circle N.W., died Saturday, March 23, 2002. Born April 26, 1922, in Harrells, he was a son of the late William Kivy and Margie Selena Herring DeVane. He attended elementary and high school in Sampson and Greene County. He was a graduate of N.C. A&T State University, receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science in 1944 and 1946 respectively. In 1979, he received an education specialist degree from Appalachian State University. He received other educational credits from the University of Minnesota, UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University. His first teaching job was at Peabody Academy in Troy. From there he moved to Shelby, where he was employed as a science and math teacher and band director of Cleveland High. He went to Lenoir in 1954 and assumed the position of principal of Freedman High School. In 1966, he became assistant superintendent of Lenoir City Schools. In 1974, he became assistant superintendent of Caldwell County Schools, where he served until retirement in 1983. He was a member, Sunday School teacher and deacon of Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church for many years. He was also a member of the Mountain and Catawba Baptist Association. He was on the board of trustees of Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute. He was a member of NCAE and NEA. He was a volunteer at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. He was a lifetime member of the NAACP. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father and friend. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Verna C. DeVane; five brothers, Cato, Cassell, Morrell, Jethro and Jimmie DeVane; and two sisters, Olivia I. DeVane and Mary DeVane English. He is survived by his children, Montrose L. DeVane Jr. of Lenoir; Mrs. Elaine DeVane Dixon of Dublin, Ga., and Ms. Gloria I. DeVane of Hickory; his grandchildren, Doni A. Dixon of Dublin and Chae S. Williams of Hickory; a son-in-law, Paul L. Dixon of Dublin; a daughter-in-law, Jane G. DeVane of Lenoir; two stepgrandchildren, Karlton and Erica Genwright, both of Lenoir; two sisters, Mildred D. Daniels of Silver Springs, Md., and Doletha D. Pridgen of Clinton; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Park. ATLANTA — Mrs. Nettie “Pat” Varene McMurtrey Crisp, 88, of 26 Springlake Place, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. ‘Ken’ Greason Sr.
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Kenneth “Ken” Edgar Greason Sr., 58, of 811 Ramseur St., died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Willie Edgar and Emma Mary Wood Greason. He was a textile employee. He is survived by two sons, Kenneth Edgar Greason Jr. and Donald Eugene Greason, both of Kings Mountain; a brother, Roger Lee Greason of Kings Mountain; a nephew, Roger Lee Greason Jr.; five grandchildren; two nieces, Sheila Luann Hallman and Sharon Lynne Greason; four great-nephews, Michael Eugene Huss, Nicolas Alexander Greason, Matthew Neal Hallman and Phillip Joseph Hallman; and two great-nieces, Stacy Nicole Hallman and Kaitlyn Nicole Greason. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home with the Rev. Mitchel Pruitt officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. MORGANTON — Mrs. Lucy Carpenter Whaley, 86, of Patton Street, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Hospice of Burke County Shytle House in Valdese, following a period of declining health. Born on April 16, 1915, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Cordelia Beheler Carpenter. She as owner and operator of Americana Beauty Shop for many years and until recently continued to work at Sheer Elegance Salon. She belonged to First United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, Mimosa Chapter No. 269. For many years, she was an active member of VFW Post 5632 Ladies Auxiliary. She taught in the continuing education department for several years at Western Piedmont Community College. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Whaley; six brothers, Will Carpenter, Forrest Carpenter, Archie Carpenter, Bob Carpenter, Elmer Carpenter and Ernest Carpenter; and a sister, Annie Cook. She is survived by a brother, Yates Carpenter, and his wife, Frances, of Morganton, and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home, with the Revs. Robert Roach and Jason Harvey officiating. Eastern Star rites will be conducted by members of the Mimosa Chapter. Burial will be in Burke Memorial Park.
