FOREST CITY — Mrs. Florence Margaret Hill, 87, of 240 McCall Drive, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Autumn Care Center in Forest City. The rosary will be said today at 4 p.m. at Padgett and King Mortuary with Father Herbert Burke officiating. A graveside service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Chicago. A memorial Mass will be Wednesday, April 3, at noon at Immaculate Conception Church in Forest City. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Chuck and Jan Hill, 240 McCall Drive, Forest City. Ozetta Patterson
SHELBY — Mrs. Ozetta Short Patterson, 80, of 1240 Earl Road, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at her home. A native of Gaston County, she was retired from Universal Manufac-turing Co., where she was an inspector for 25 years. She was a member of Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church for 55 years. She was a member of the Serendipity Sunday School Class. She enjoyed Dee Greene’s water aerobics class at the Shelby City Park, crochet, puzzles, cooking, flower gardening and, most of all, her family. She was a graduate of No. 3 High School and Evans College in Gastonia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marcus and Mae Short; a son, Robert Dwayne Patterson; foster parents, Clarence and Ola Putnam; foster sisters and their husbands, Donnis and Ralph Walker and Helene and Wells Lowery; a foster brother, Buddy Putnam; a foster brother and his wife, Spurgeon and Maggie Lee Putnam; a sister-in-law, Sybil Patterson Swink; and a brother-in-law, James Patterson. She is survived by her husband, Robert Conley Patterson of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Conley Dale and Sheila Beaty Patterson of Gastonia; a daughter, Wanda Kay Patterson Holloway of Belmont; a grandson, John Embry Holloway IV of Charlotte; a sister-in-law, Pauline P. Greene of Grover; and a foster sister-in-law, Gladys Putnam of Shelby. The funeral will be Saturday at Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Billy Towery officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. B.R. Holbrook
SHELBY — The Rev. B.R. Holbrook, 89, of 6849 Landor Drive died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at his home. A native of Wilkes County, he was a retired Baptist minister. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School in Jonesville, Wingate College and Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute and received his master’s of theology and doctorate from Burton College and Seminary in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hargus M. and Cornelia Brown Holbrook; a daughter-in-law, Bobbie Walker Holbrook; three brothers; and five sisters. He is survived by his wife, Velda Holcomb Holbrook of Rutherfordton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie and Millie Keeter Holbrook of Shelby and Rick and Kathy Holbrook of Oak Island; a sister, Lois Woods of Elkin; grandchildren, Nicole and David Arendas of Shelby, Chad and Jennifer Holbrook of Chapel Hill, Mimi Holbrook of St. Louis, Mo., and Seth Holbrook of Oak Island; and three great-grandchildren, David Christian, Walker Arendas and Carley Arendas, all of Shelby. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Clay-Barnette Chapel with the Rev. Tom Stephens officiating. Burial will be Friday at 3 p.m. in Sunrise Cemetery in Elkin. SHELBY — Mrs. Mary Cynthia “Cindy” Van Dyke Jones, 60, of 405 Poplar Springs Church Road, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 21, 1942, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of Prue Hull Van Dyke of Waco and the late Jim Van Dyke. She was a homemaker and member of Landmark Baptist Church. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee Van Dyke and Ray Van Dyke. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Elmer Lee Jones of the home; a brother, Jim H. Van Dyke of Lincolnton; two sisters, Peggy Beaver and Joy Kay Davis, both of Lincolnton; and a special friend, Oliver N. Oaks of Shelby. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with the Revs. Doug James, Rufus Davis and Allen Davis officiating. Burial will be in Union Baptist Church Cemetery. LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Sherry Sparks Greene, 29, of 877 Arrow Drive, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Lincoln Medical Center. Born Dec. 20, 1972, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of Bobby Ray and Peggy Tessneer Sparks of Shelby. She was employed as a radiologic technologist at Gaston Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Davidson Memorial Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Richard Bryan Greene of the home; a son, Justin Hanson Greene of the home; a brother and his wife, Mike and Leigh Anna Sparks of Hoschton, Ga.; her grandmother, Margaret “Tine” Tessneer of Shelby; and a nephew, Collin Sparks. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Davidson Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Ridge officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. LATTIMORE — Mrs. Mada Philbeck Jones, 88, a former resident of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Hospice of Cleveland County at Wendover after an extended illness. Born April 9, 1913, she was a daughter of the late James Hoyle and Georgia Lookadoo Philbeck. She was a homemaker and later worked at Sneed’s Bakery in Boiling Springs. She was a member of Lattimore Baptist Church and served in many ways there. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Walter Jones; four brothers, Major Philbeck, Bill Philbeck, Tom Philbeck and Bob Philbeck; and a grandson, Patrick Jones. She is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mattie Lou and Stough Wright of Hampton, Va., and Rosa and Paul Hodgdon of Payson, Ariz.; and a number of nieces and nephews; her children, Kathleen Jones Hocker and her husband, John, of Stanley, Dot Jones Grigg and her husband, Dayne, of Shelby, James R. Jones and his wife, Beverly, of Black Mountain, Linda Jones Greene and her husband, Lenord, and Billie Jones Baughman and her husband, Bob, all of Shelby, Lisa Jones Champion and her husband, Donald, of Forest City; 12 grandchildren, Kathy Wilinson and her husband, Keith, Kim Sneed, Kevin Jones and his wife, Deedee, Kristin Sieber and her husband, Robert, Tracy Greene and his wife, Angela, Trinity Greene, Tiffany Greene, Bryan Gordon, Matt Gordon, Ronald Champion and his wife, Latisha, Jonathan Champion and his wife, Tabatha, and James Champion and his wife, Diana; and 17 great-grandchildren, Clayton Wilkinson, Zachary Wilkinson, Abby Sneed, Nicole Ekegren, Kelly Jones, Kristoffer Jones, Morgan Jones, Ashlee Greene, Bethany Greene, Cady Greene, Dylan Champion, Ryan Champion, Jacob Champion, Kayla Champion, Ashley Champion, Jason Champion and Jonathan Champion. ELLENBORO — Mrs. Lucy Trujillo Cox Ingle, 69, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. A native of Cheyenne, Wyo., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Fidella Serano Trujillo. She was a homemaker and member of Piney Mountain Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Willie Ingle of the home; two sons, Edward Lee Trujillo and Gary Steven Trujillo of Fort Collins, Colo.; two daughters, Tina Cox Miller of Forest City and Jan Cox Grantt of Nashville, Tenn.; two stepsons, Billy Sanders of Lawndale and William J. Ingle of Shelby; a stepdaughter, Deborah Ingle McKinney of Boiling Springs; two brothers, Rudy Trujillo of Seattle, Wash., and Johnny Trujillo of Fort Collins; four sisters, Sarah Romero, Carmen Buckendor and Yolanda Jinenec, all of Fort Collins and Mary Romeo of California; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Monnie Leach
SHELBY — Mrs. Monnie Jane Moore Leach, 90, of 1010 Frederick St., died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Fort Washington Medical Center in Fort Washington, Md. A native of Cleveland County, she was born Jan. 1, 1912. She resided in Washington, D.C., for over 50 years, where she was a member of Southern Baptist Church. She later joined Shiloh Baptist Church upon her return to Shelby in 1989. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Leach, and her daughter, Effie Goolsby. She is survived by her sister, Catherine Young of Shelby; a brother, Robert Moore of Mooresboro; five grandchildren, Joe B. Goolsby Jr. and Bobby L. Goolsby of Washington, D.C., Daisy M. Goolsby-Murrell and Effie M. Goolsby of Accokeek, Md., and Samuel L. Goolsby of Shelby; a stepgranddaughter, Rebecca Abernethy of Hickory; three great-grandchildren, Robert F. Murrell of Accokeek, Md., Ivy Tyson of Lawndale and Amber M. Goolsby of Lanham, Md.; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Marcellous Mack officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. Robey Brackett
LAWNDALE — Mr. Robey Forest Brackett, 90, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of White Oak, he was born Jan. 23, 1912. He was a retired mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and also was a retired dairy farmer. He was a member of Palm Tree United Methodist Church, where he served as former chairman of the finance committee. He served in the Navy during World War II in the European Theater. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.H. and Matilba Essie Newton Brackett; his wife, Martha Elsie Grigg Brackett; three brothers, Yates, Hazel and J.C. Brackett; and three sisters, Armellia Dysart, Lenna Ballard and Mozell Cabaniss. He is survived by his sister-in-law and her husband, Selma and Hassell Beam of Fallston and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Palm Tree United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Harrill officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park. John Philbeck
GATESVILLE, Texas — Mr. John Wayne Philbeck, 66, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at a Gatesville Hospital. Born Jan. 16, 1936, in Shelby, he was a son of the late John and Carrie Tessier Philbeck. He attended school in Shelby. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Andrea Manriquez on Dec. 25, 1955, and they made their home in Gatesville. He was a self-employed contractor for many years until his retirement in 1979. He loved to read and fish. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Andrea Philbeck of Gatesville; a daughter, Deborah Lattanzio of Killeen, Texas; a son, Michael Wayne Philbeck of Bryan, Texas; five grandchildren, Christa, Caren, Quade, Jennifer and Jordan; two great-grandchildren, Justin and Jaycee; three sisters, Joyce Dover of Shelby; Geraldine Terry of Kings Mountain and Kay Jones of Statesville; five brothers, John Frank Manriquez of Spencer, Ind., J.B. Philbeck, Billy Philbeck and Kenneth Philbeck all of Shelby and Peanut Philbeck of Statesville. The funeral was March 19 at Scott’s Funeral Home with Michael Bond officiating.
