‘Chris’ Scism
SHELBY — Mr. Martin Christopher “Chris” Scism, 50, of 1354 N. Lafayette St., died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of Helen Ruth Martin Scism of the home and the late Lester E. Scism. He was employed by Dixie Industrial Supply as quality assurance manager. He volunteered for Cleveland County Council on Literacy and was a member of Assembly of God. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Cathy S. Proctor. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son and his fiancée, Martin C. Scism II and Beth Brooks of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Jacquelyn Michelle and William Crowder of Gastonia; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Roseanne and Glenn Campbell of Lattimore and Fran Grantt of Shelby; and three grandchildren, Olivia, Emily and Andersen Crowder of Gastonia. A memorial service will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Revs. Jimmy Holmes and Lamar Creel officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at the funeral home and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Wilma Poteat
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Wilma Butler Poteat, 91, of 704 W. Mountain St., died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. A graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery with Dr. John Sloan and the Rev. Morris Jordan officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. before the service at Harris Funeral Home.

KATHERINE WILSON
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Katherine Wilson of 511 N. Watterson St., died Friday, March 29, 2002, at her home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by J.W. Gill and Sons Funeral Home.

CARTER BILLINGS
BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Carter Goodson Billings, 79, of 287 Wren Wray Road, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Durham, he was the husband of Colleen Wray Billings of the home and son of the late John Richard Sr. and Mollie Noell Billings. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a retired FBI Special Agent. He was a member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Shelby. He was a Shriner, a Mason and member of Buffalo Lodge 202 and a former member of the Blacksburg Rotary Club. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, William H. Billings of Fayetteville, James and Cheryl Billings of Blacksburg and John and Connie Billings of Spartanburg, S.C.; two grandsons, Michael and Eric Billings, both of Blacksburg; and a granddaughter, Christie Billings of Spartanburg. Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Mount Sinai Baptist Church of Shelby with the Revs. Tom Trexler and Broadus Heatherly officiating. Burial will follow in Clingman Memorial Gardens in Blacksburg. Pallbearers serving are, Jeff Baker, Marvin Wray, Kenneth Wray, Rickey Ledbetter, Michael Ledbetter, Eric Billings, Michael Billings and Gene Wray. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 7:30 at White Columns Funeral Service in Blacksburg.

LAWRENCE RAMSEY JR.
SHELBY — Mr. Lawrence “Buck” Hugh Ramsey Jr., 74, of 218 College Ave., died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Emory Gap. Tenn., he was retired from Container Corp. where he was a production worker for 25 years. He was a member of Shelby Freewill Baptist Church where he was a member of Senior Men’s Sunday School Class. He was in the Army where he served in the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Hugh Sr. and Alice Taylor Ramsey; a brother, Ray Ramsey and sister, Betty Quillen. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Bailey Ramsey of Shelby; a sister, Helen Poole of Harriman, Tenn.; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Shelby Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Tolley officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church two hours before the service. The family will receive friends Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church. Cleveland Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

ROY NEWTON
LINCOLNTON — Mr. Roy Everette “Newt” Newton, of Cardinal Health Care, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Cardinal Health Care. Born July 28, 1911, in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late John Kelly and Fannie Hunter Newton. He was a retired cotton farmer and a member of Community Baptist Church. He served in the Army Airforce during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie Irene Lawson Newton; a son, John Newton; a grandson, David Newton; a granddaughter, Donna Newton; and one great-granddaughter, Kayla Newton. He is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Elaine Newton of Charleston, S.C., Chuck and Betty Newton of Mooresboro, Lenoard and Wanda Newton of Crestview, Fla., James and Diane Newton of Warner Robins, Ga., and Roger and Rachel Newton of Prattville, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Faye Newton of Shelby; three daughters and a son-in-law, Annie Blanton and Linda and Billy Wright, all of Shelby, and Carolyn Newton of Polkville; a brother, Charles Newton of Lincolnton; a sister, Etta Smart of Forest City; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Sunday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Brodgen officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

ALVA MORGAN
FOREST CITY — Mr. Alva E. Morgan, 70, of 337 Willow Run Drive, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home with the Revs. Boyce Gregory and Michael Sepaugh officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

LAWRENCE HAM
BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mr. Lawrence William Ham, 73, of 809 Old Chester Road, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church with Dr. Charlie Barnard officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church following the services and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Hopewell Baptist Church Building Fund, 511 Old Chester Road, Blacksburg, SC 29702; or to CKC Volunteer Fire Department, 1002 Old Chester Road, Blacksburg, SC 29702. White Columns-Blacksburg Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

ELTON BLISS
RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Elton Gooding Bliss, 81, of 711 Old Highway 221, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Ronald Chapman officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Bristol, N.Y. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043. Crowe’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Beal
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Raymond J. Beal, 74, of 412 Alan Drive, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby. Born in Mecklenburg County, he was a son of the late Joe T. and Bonnie Earle Beal. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Maiden and the Serenity Club in Kings Mountain. He retired from Glenn Raven Mills in Kings Mountain. He also served in the Navy. He is survived by his wife, Laverne Hilton Beal of Kings Mountain; a son, Daniel K. Beal of Fayetteville; a daughter, Sheila B. Goodson of Maiden; four grandchildren, Shane Goodson of Gastonia, Marcus Goodson and his wife, Kim, of Catawba, Bridgett Goodson and Natalie Goodson; and two great-grandchildren, Lacie Laney and Bailee Goodson. A graveside service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Mountain Rest Cemetery with Chaplain, David Fambrough officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 before the service at Harris Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Road, Shelby, NC 28150 or to Serenity Club, Bethlehem Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

Hester Thompson
CAROLEEN — Mrs. Hester Mae Radford Thompson, 94, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Willow Ridge of North Carolina in Rutherfordton. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home with the Revs. Richard Johnson, Kim Higgins and Robert Harris officiating. Burial will be in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Lillie Mae Mayse
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Lillie Mae Jones Mayse, 83, of 433 Doggett Grove Road, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Mount Pisgah United Church of God with Elder Jesse Banner officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Doggett Grove Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Harris. Thompson Brothers Funeral Home of Forest City is in charge of arrangements.

SHELBY — Mrs. Ella Mae Bowers, 69, of 406 Clegg St., formerly of Rutherford County, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at her home. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Haynes Grove Baptist Church in Cliffside with the Rev. Charles Webber officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Thompson Brothers Funeral Home of Forest City is in charge of arrangements.

Juanita Williford
LYMAN, S.C. — Mrs. Juanita Bell Williford, 71, of 1125 Old Spartanburg Highway, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at her home following an extended illness. A native of Vincent, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Mary Ellen Threath Bell. She was reared in Cleveland, Ohio, by her late grandparents, Judge and Zeena Hill. She was a member of Williford Temple Righteous Church of God in Shelby and later joined the Abundant Life Faith Ministries in Shelby. She was a 1948 graduate of John Hay High School in Cleveland and a former employee of Union Carbide of Cleveland. She is survived by her husband, Bishop A.E. Williford Sr.; three sons, Thomas Williford of the home, Andrew Williford Jr. of Charlotte and Darryl “Chip” Williford Sr. of Long Island, N.Y.; three daughters, Lenita Robinson of the home, Deborah Freeman and Carolyn W. Dover, both of Shelby; a brother, Wayne Bell of Cleveland; a special cousin, Sarah Haygood of Detroit, 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at noon at Victory Deliverance Church, 589 Charlevoix St., Spartanburg, S.C., by Bishops Phillip Williford and Derrick Freeman. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Heritage Memorial Gardens of Roebuck, S.C. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at The Michael A. Glenn Funeral Home.

Willie Turner
CHARLOTTE — Mrs. Willie Lucille Wells Turner, 78, of 8919 Park Road, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Southminster Retirement Community in Charlotte. Born in Jan. 19, 1924, in Shelby, she was a daughter of the late Charles Hudson Wells and Tonce Walker both of Cleveland County. She was a graduate of Mars Hill College and was a dedicated homemaker. She is survived by her loving husband, Max M. Turner; three daughters, Lora Jane Furniss of Rocky Hill, Conn., Rachel Ann Turner of Somerville, N.J., and Elizabeth Helen Russell of East Hampton, Mass.; three sons, Murray W. Turner, M.D., and Mark W. Turner, both of Charlotte, and Stuart R. Turner of Raleigh; two sisters, Mary Wray and Helen Toole, both of Shelby; and nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Alzheimer’s Association, 919 North Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, Ill. 60611-1676.

Lois Waters
LAWNDALE — Mrs. Lois Wease Waters, 82, of 214 Southards St., died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. A native of Cleveland County, she was born Aug. 8, 1919. She was retired from Cleveland Mills. She was a member of Lawndale Missionary Methodist Church where she was active in the music ministry and served as church treasurer for 34 years. She was a graduate of Piedmont High School. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ezra Gold King Wease and Myrtle Ledwell Wease; a husband, the Rev. John L. Waters; three brothers, Ben, Howard and Edward Wease; and a sister, Shirley Brown. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Jack Sr. and Phyllis Waters of Lawndale; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Ernest Wright of Davidson and Frieda and Randy Allen of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ezra and Maggie Wease and Tommy and Mattie Sue Wease, all of Lawndale; two sisters, Mary Sue Champion and Adell Eaker, both of Lawndale; five grandsons and their wives, John and Janet Wright of Fayetteville, David and Cheryl Wright of Raleigh, Jack and Lisa Waters Jr. of Lawndale, Lance Allen and Zachery Allen of Myrtle Beach; six great-grandchildren, Leah, Cassie and Candie Waters of Lawndale; Madeleine and Anna Wright of Raleigh and Nathan Wright of Fayetteville; and her best friend and constant companion, her dog, Nutt-Nutt. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Lawndale Missionary Methodist Church with the Rev. Floyd Bottoms officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Moriah United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Stamey Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the home of Jack and Phyllis Waters Sr. at 129 Dallas Rd in Lawndale. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice at Wendover, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

FOREST CITY — Alva E. Morgan of Willow Run Drive died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at his home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be annouced by McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.
