Mrs. Alma Vickrey Bristol

Mrs. Alma Vickrey Bristol, a long time resident of Morganton and a member of its oldest families died Thursday at Britthaven Nursing Home in Morganton following an extended illness . She was 91.

Before retiring in 1970, Mrs. Bristol taught business subjects in a number of North Carolina schools, including Henderson, Valdese, Glen Alpine and Statesville. In the 1950’s and 60’s she owned and operated the Bristol Business School.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Bristol was born in Paducah Kentucky and was reared in Princeton and Bowling Green Kentucky; where she graduated from Western Kentucky University. The widow of Robert L. Bristol of Morganton she was the daughter of the late Abner Roland and Nancy Hancock Vickrey.

She is survived by her three children; Robert L. Bristol Jr. of Hendersonville Tennessee; Sharon L. Bristol of Owings Mills, Maryland; Edward R. Bristol of Raleigh N.C.; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a sister Ethel Read of Bowling Green Kentucky.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Monday, May 19, 2003 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton with the Reverend Carl Lindquist officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 till 9 PM Sunday, May 18, 2003 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.

Mrs. Edith Simmons Mull

Mrs. Edith Simmons Mull, 86, of Mt. Home Church Road, died Wednesday, at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was born in Burke County July 19, 1917 and was daughter of the late Walter Simmons and Belle Woody Simmons.

She was retired from the Western Carolina Center and a member of Mt. Home Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Bristol Mull; brothers, Ed Simmons, George Simmons and Ernest Simmons and her sister, Louise Burleson.

She is survived by her daughters, Ellen M. Bailey of Greensboro, NC; Irilda M. Stephens and Maxine M. Tapp both of Morganton; sisters, Jeanette Lowenhaupt of Ft. Meyers, FL, Dorothy Turbyfill of Black Mountain, NC and Anne Roberts of Swannanoa, NC, 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

A funeral service for Mrs. Mull will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM at Mount Home Baptist Church with the Reverends Jerry Gamble and Alan Wilson officiating. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Kirksey Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Burke County, P.O Box 1029, Valdese, NC 28690; or to Mount Home Baptist Church Building Fund, 2272 Mount Home Church Road, Morganton, NC 28655 or Denton’s Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund, 5358 Denton’s Chapel Road, Morganton, NC 28655.

Bobby Keith Laughter

Bobby Keith Laughter, 60, of Elkhart, Ind. died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at his residence.

Born April 29, 1944 in McDowell County, he was a son of the late David Laughter and Grace Sparks Laughter.

Mr. Laughter is survived by a son, Brian K. Laughter (Marcia) of Savanah, Tenn.; two daughters, Dawn Bronson and Mrs. Mario (Tammy) Perez, all of Elkhart, Ind.; two stepsons, Billy McDonald (Mindy) of Elkhart, Ind. and Bobby McDonald (Kathy) of Goshen, Ind. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; one brother, Billy Laughter of Marion; two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Bernice) McCormick and Trudy Johns, all of Marion.

Funeral services for Mr. Laughter will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2004 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion. Interment will follow at the Tolley Cemetery, Spruce Pine. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion Chapel.

Mrs. Wilma H. Harmon

Mrs. Wilma H. Harmon, 65, of Morganton, died Thursday, December 23, 2004 at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. She was born April 26, 1939 in Avery County and was daughter of the late Willie J. Harmon and Winnie Lewis Harmon.

She was retired from Burke Long Term Care where she worked as a nursing assistant.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ronis, Renis, Eunice and Bronsky Harmon and sister, Lillian Mitchell.

She is survived by her son, Dolphus “Dee” Harmon and wife Peggy, of Morganton, brothers; Burl Harmon and Wallace Harmon both of Morganton; sister, Delores Wakeford of Morganton and grandson, Alex Price of Morganton.

Funeral services will be 1:30 PM Sunday at Kirksey Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Randy Keever presiding. Interment will follow the service at Faith Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 12:00 noon until time for the service.

Memorials may be made to Faith Missionary Baptist Church, P O Box 1225, Glen Alpine, NC 28628.

Mr. Ralph Edward Coffey

Mr. Ralph Edward Coffey, 71, of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at his home in Jacksonville Beach.

He was born August 28, 1932 in Burke County, North Carolina and was son of the late Jerome Lester Coffey and Gertrude Pearson Coffey.

Mr. Coffey was a professional caddy for the Professional Golfer’s Association and served in the Us Army during the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Ann Leonard.

He is survived by brothers, James Junior Coffey and wife Mary, of Columbia, SC, Charles Lester Coffey and Donald Ray Coffey both of Jonas Ridge, North Carolina; sister, Sue Mae Daye of Morganton, North Carolina.

A Graveside service was held Saturday, March 6th at Burke Memorial Park.

Mrs. Lonnie Smith Franklin

Mrs. Lonnie Smith Franklin, 82, of Golf Course Road died Sunday, August 1, 2004 at Grace Heights. She was born December 13, 1921 in Burke County and was daughter of the late Alonzo Smith and Mattie Johnson Smith Morrison.

She was retired from Southern Devices and until recently, was a foster grandparent at the J. Iverson Riddle Institute in Morganton. She was a long-time member of Hopewell Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred Monroe Franklin.

She is survived by her children, sons, Dysart Franklin and wife, Becky of Morganton; Wayne Franklin of Morganton; Jim Franklin and wife Barbara of Belmont and Glenn Franklin and wife Nancy of Morganton; daughters, Anne Franklin Buchanan and husband, Eddie and Lynn Franklin and fiancé, Coleman Earwood all of Morganton.; brother, James Smith of Morganton; 11 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 1 great- great grandchild.

Funeral services for Mrs. Franklin will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at Hopewell Baptist Church with Reverends, Homer Murdock, Timothy Horldt and Beth Henderson officiating. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and other times at 622 Golf Course Road.

Mary Thelma Hensley Allison

Mary Thelma Hensley Allison, 67, of Old Fort, died Sunday, January 23, 2005, at Autumn Care. Born in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Joe Hensley and Dullie Brown Hensley. In addition to her parents, Ms. Allison was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Allison.

Surviving are two sons, Melvin Allison and wife, Glenda of Old Fort and Jimmy Allison and wife, Andrea of Marion; one daughter, Michelle Keith and husband, Robert of Old Fort; seven grandchildren, Melissa Weaver, Jason Allison, Autumn Bartlett, Zane Allison, Casey Allison, Lauren Keith and Megan Keith; and two great grandchildren, Lakan and Cole Weaver.

Funeral Services for Ms. Allison will be held 2:00PM, Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at Kirksey Funeral Home in Old Fort with Reverend Harold Webb officiating. Burial will follow at Ebenezer-Siloam Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00PM-8:00PM on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at the Funeral Home in Old Fort.

The Allison family would like to acknowledge the care and compassion shown by all the staff of Autumn Care.

Mrs. Erika Kalnins Mazitis

Mrs. Erika Kalnins Mazitis, 81, of Knollwood Circle in Salem died Saturday, May 24, 2003 at the Shytle House in Valdese. Born March 14, 1922 in Jekabpila Latvia she was the daughter of the late Williams and Klouda Malceus Kalnins.

Mrs. Mazitis and her husband came to the United States in 1950. After arriving in the United States she earned a DDS degree in 1956 from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in Memphis and was selected as a member of the Omecion Kappa Upsilon honorary Society. After graduation she became the Director of Dental Service at Broughton Hospital in 1957 where she remain until her retirement . She had received a degree in 1948 from Dussldof University School of Dentistry in Dussldof Germany . She was listed in the Who’s Who of American Women and was a member of the Morganton Women’s Club. She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Morganton.

She is survived by ; her husband of fifty three years Janis Mazitis of the home; son Ivar Mazitis of the home; brother Paul Kalnins of Toronto Canada and a sister Irene Rozitis of Toronto Canada.

A memorial service will be held 7:00 PM Thursday, May 29, 2003 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Morganton, with the Reverend Doctor Michael Riley officiating .

Entombment will be 2:00 PM Thursday, May29, 2003 at the Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends 6 till 7 PM Thursday at the Calvary Lutheran Church.

Memorials in Mrs. Mazitis’s memory may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church, 119 North King Street, Morganton NC 28655 or Hospice of Burke County, P.O. Box 209, Valdese NC 28690.

Nettie Bee Burleson Powell

Nettie Bee Burleson Powell, age 63, died October 17, 2003. Born on April 1, 1940 in Mitchell County to Alice Smith Burleson of Marion, and the late Warnie George Burleson, she was a self-employed Beautician.

In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by her husband, Billy Campbell, and a sister, Ann Berutti.

Left behind to cherish her loving memory are two daughters; Tammy Campbell Baker and Sandy Lewis, both of Marion; one brother, Chuck Burleson of Marion; one sister, Gladys Baker of Morganton; seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Services will be held on October 19, 2003 in the McCall Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home of Marion at 5 PM. The family will receive friends beginning at 4 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tammy Baker and Sandy Lewis.

Kirksey Funeral Home- Marion is assisting the family with the arrangements.
