SHELBY — Mr. Albert Charles Lee Sr. , 67, of 613 S. Dekalb St., died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Genesis Funeral Service.
‘Bill’ Bentley
BRADENTON, Fla. — Retired Army Lt. Col. William Charles “Bill” Bentley, 82, of 3319 47th Ave. E., died Thursday, April 4, 2002, in Braden-ton. Born in Allegheny County, Pa., he was a son of the late William James and Helen Kathryn Zenzer Bentley. He was a career military officer with 22 years in the Army Infantry. He was a combat veteran of World War II and served in the Aleutian Islands, Marshall Islands, Philippines, Okinawa and Ryukus Islands and Korea. He retired as lieutenant colonel in 1967. He was awarded the Silver Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star with “V,” Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal with two clusters, Combat Infantry Badge with Star and numerous campaign and service medals. He was a life member of VFW Post 4325 and American Legion Post 24, Bradenton, Bradenton Elks Lodge 1511, Loyal Order of Moose 803 and Fraternity Order of Eagles 3438, Matoon, Ill., Retired Officers Association and 7th Infantry Division Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene A. Deptula Bentley; and a sister, Jean B. Sproat. He is survived by his wife, Martha Morgan Roark Bentley of the home; a stepson and his wife, Charles F. and Debbie Morgan of Matoon, Ill.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen M. and John C. Bennett Jr. of Charlotte and Gerianne Mooney of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward James and Barbara Bentley of Glenshaw, Pa.; a sister, Blanche J. Black of Glenshaw; four grandchildren, John Bentley Bennett, Nigel A., Lindsay A., and Heath A. Mooney; two stepgrandchildren, Angela D. Renfro and Brian C. Morgan; and one stepgreat-granddaughter, Sierra Morgan. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene McDowell officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park with full military honors by the Army, Fort Bragg. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. before the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his daughter, Gerianne Mooney, 3012 Charles Road, Shelby. LINCOLNTON — Mr. Carl William Rippy, 74, of 725 Sycamore St., died Sunday, April 7, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. LAWNDALE — Mr. Fred Donald Spurling, 66, of 310 St. Peter’s Church Road, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born April 17, 1935, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late John Gaston and Lou Ella Warlick Spurling. He was employed by McNeilly Oil Co. as a truck driver. He was a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Aileen Crotts Spurling; and three brothers, Ellis, Ralph and Earl Spurling. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Wanda Spurling of Lawndale; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Kevin Williams of Lawndale; a brother, Roy Spurling of Shelby; two sisters, Mildred Lee of Concord and Bertie Lee Tillman of Kings Mountain; and six grandchildren, Angel Williams, Adam Williams, Alesha Williams, Tyler Spurling, Amber Williams and Makayela Spurling. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Olive Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Terrill Crump and Johnny Johnson officiating. SHELBY — Mr. Nolan James Beukema, 55, of 320-1 Patton Drive, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 6, 1946, in Kent County, Mich., he was an Army Vietnam veteran with 26 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Feeley Beukema of the home; his parents, John Beukema of San Diego, Calif., and Evelyn Zandstra of Spokane, Wash.; two sons, Paul Beukema of Phoenix, Ariz., and John Andrew Beukema of Australia; two daughters, Jeanette Lorraine Cass of Kings Mountain and Heather Ann Beukema of Shelby; two brothers, Phil Beukema of Marquette, Mich., and Ken Beukema of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Janice Whitaker of Seattle, Wash.; and three grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 8 p.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Kings Mountain with the Rev. Kevin Mathis officiating. A private burial will be in Veteran Cemetery in Salisbury. SHELBY — Mrs. Irene Canipe Johnson, 88, of 401 N. Morgan St., died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. Born Jan. 5, 1914, in Ruther-ford County, she was a daughter of Jasper Suson and Jeanette Leila Smith Canipe. She retired from Bost Bakery. She was a member of Kistler’s United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Erastus Vilector Johnson; a son, Quinton Johnson; two brothers, Marvin Canipe and Hughes Canipe; and three sisters, Iris Cooke, Vassie Johnson and Vergie Bridges. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Earnest and Peggy Johnson, Kenneth and Virginia Johnson and Jerry and Ann Johnson, all of Shelby; two daughters and a son-in-law, Clara Johnson of Charlotte and Marie and Robert G. Odom of Shelby; a brother, Edley Canipe of Lattimore; a sister, Blanche Towery of Casar; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with Dr. Harold Fite officiating. Burial will be in Kistler’s United Methodist Church Cemetery. BARNWELL, S.C. — Mrs. Lenna Elliott Jolly, 99, formerly of Polkville, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at Barnwell County Hospital. Born Feb. 16, 1903, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Lydia Willis Elliott. She was a homemaker and retired from J.P. Stevens Co. She was a member of Polkville United Methodist Church and a graduate of Brevard Institute. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Burgess Jolly; and nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Hugh “Jake” and Helen Jolly of Shelby and Richard M. and Nancy Jolly of Oakridge; a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Clyde Hamrick of Barnwell; three special friends, Linda Stewart, Ruthie Jackson and Carolyn Nickens; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Latimer and assisted by Rev. Bill Smith. Burial will be in Elliott Family Cemetery in Polkville. SHELBY — Mrs. Mary Sue Tesseneer McCombs, 78, of 417 W. Circle Drive, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. Born in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late John Clifton and Katie Bell Hawkins Tesseneer. She retired from Bost Bakery and was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church. She is survived by her former husband, Jack McCombs; a sister and brother-in-law, Leitha “Hike” and J.D. Davis of Shelby; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Leslie officiating. Burial will be in Lattimore Baptist Church Cemetery. Leroy Mayse
FOREST CITY — Mr. Leroy Mayse, 78, formerly of 115 Getty St., died Sunday, April 7, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. He was born Sept. 8, 1923, to the late Isaiah and Melissa Hamilton Mayse. He joined Oak Grove Mission-ary Baptist Church at a young age, where he served faithfully as a trustee for many, many years. He served his country in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945. After his service to his country, he met and married Mary Logan on Aug. 8, 1951, where to this union one child was born. He retired from Charles Watkins Used Cars. He was a loving father, a devoted church member and a giving person. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Logan Mayse; a stepson, Daniel Paul Deck; a granddaughter, Paula Deck Duncan; a sister, Vera Mae Hines; and a brother, Fred Mayse. He leaves to hold these lovely memories, a daughter and son-in-law, the Rev. Patricia Mayse and Lamar Borders of Shelby; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Thomas “Billy” Mayse of Albany, N.Y., Dainnye and Lola Mayse of Forest City; a sister, Louise Miller of Albany; a very special daughter-in-law, Roberta Holiday Deck of Forest City; five grandchildren, Steven Deck and Daniel P. Deck Jr., both of Forest City, Carla Daniels of Charlotte, Charlotte Bronson of Cincinnati, Tonia M. Mayse of Shelby; 10 great-grandchildren; a loving extended spiritual family, Evangelist Flora Littlejohn of Shelby, James Lee and Magra Morrow, both of Shelby, Naki and Marsha Thomas of Charlotte, Sakara Johnson and Steven Johnson of Shelby, Carla O.
