Lila Whisnant
SHELBY — Mrs. Lila Delle Thomas Whisnant, 90, formerly of 835 Ivywood Drive, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. Born in Hall County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late M.L. and Ida Beaty Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Eastside Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, C. Craig Whisnant; four brothers, Herman and Bud Carlton and W.C. and J.D. Thomas; a sister, Mary Lou Thomas; a grandson, John Bart Ramsey; and a granddaughter, Lisa Jo Whisnant. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, C. Ray and J.P. Whisnant of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lucille and Sherrill Edwards of Shelby and Carolyn and Steve Ramsey of Roanoke, Va.; three sisters, Ola Thomas Hammond of Shelby, Dean Thomas Greene and her husband, the Rev. Lloyd Greene, of Augusta, Ga., and Bobbie Thomas Hastings of Boiling Springs; grandchildren, Alan and Lisa Ramsey of Minnetonka, Minn., Chris and Sandy Ramsey of Waconia, Minn., Scott Edwards of Apex, Dale and Elizabeth Oliver of Shelby, Tracy and Sheila Whisnant of Shelby, and Kevin and Lisa Whisnant of Belwood; and great-grandchildren, Brent, Stephanie, Travis and Jessica Ramsey, Craig and Courtney Oliver and Zachary Whisnant. The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church, with the Revs. Lloyd Greene, Troy Harris and Leland Kerr officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 in the sanctuary of Eastside Baptist Church and at other times at the home of Lucille and Sherrill Edwards, 1405 N. Post Road, Shelby. Essie Price
BOSTIC — Mrs. Essie Cleo Hunt Price, 97, of Duncan’s Creek Community, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at her home. Born in Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Elisha and Hannah McFarland Hunt and widow of the late William Thomas “Tom” Price, who died in 1970. She was a homemaker and a member of Duncan’s Creek Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Eloise Sayre, and her brother, Horace Hunt. Survivors include two daughters, Viola Harrison of Sunshine and Polly Weiss of Salem, Va. There are also nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, a loving niece, Inez Gettys, and a special friend, Irene Toney. A special thanks to Carolina Community Care and especially Denise Morrow for their love and care. The family also gives recognition and gratitude to Gala, Dee, Gina and others. The graveside service is today at 11 a.m. at Duncan’s Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery. To fulfill Essie’s wish, Cliff Gettys, with love and devotion, will present the scriptures and eulogy. Pauline Navey
SHELBY — Mrs. Pauline Bridges Navey, 96, of 1437 New House Road, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Cicero Miller and Carrie Hawkins Bridges. She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of Double Springs Baptist Church, where she belonged to the Dorcas Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Victor Navey; two sons, Ernest E. “Gene” Navey and Donald Navey; nine brothers, Edgar, Posey, Broughton, Plato, Yates, Manley, Earl and Bate Bridges and Melvin Wilson; and five sisters, Hessie Blanton, Beuna Greene, Analda Blanton, Mertice Brooks and Lena Wentz. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James H. and Sarah Navey of Fort Mill, S.C., and Paul W. and Diana Navey of Lawndale; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Eddie Harrill of Shelby; a brother, Truman Bridges of Asheville; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Double Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. Glenn Walker officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Patricia and Eddie Harrill, 1437 New House Road, Shelby. Frank Garver Jr.
SHELBY — Mr. Frank E. Garver Jr., 47, of Fallston Road, formerly of Norfolk, Va., died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby. Born May 9, 1954, in Portsmouth, Va., he was a son of the late Vivian Dover Garver. He attended Old Dominion University and Wake Forest University. He owned Sterling Productions, which provides entertainment services for the U.S. military in South Korea. He was a Baptist and attended Fallston Baptist Church. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a grandmother, Waylan Wray. He is survived by his wife, Francesca D’Angelis-Garver; his father and stepmother, the Rev. Frank Garver Sr. and Josie Sessoms Garver of Kings Mountain; a daughter, Jamie Koizumi of Osaka, Japan; a brother, John Garver of Stuyvesant, N.Y.; a sister, Jennifer Garver of Campbell, Calif.; and a grandmother, Minnie J. Garver of Shelby. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Fallston Baptist Church, with the Rev. Scott Norton officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. Albert Lee Jr.
SHELBY — Mr. Albert Charles Lee Jr., 66, of 613 Dekalb St., died Wednesday, April 10, 2002. Born Oct. 21, 1935, in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Aurthur and Della Ross Lee. He was formerly employed by Harris Teeter and was a trustee of Hoppers Chapel Baptist Church, where he was a member of the senior choir. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 42 years, Nellie Borders Lee; his stepmother, Elizabeth Brouton; and a brother, William “June” Brouton. He is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law, Albert Jr. and Terri Lee of Shelby; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Peggy Lee, Della and Jim Lawton, Lisa Lee and Barbara and Pink Hunt, all of Shelby; 30 grandchildren; eight-great grandchildren; and one very special cousin, Veola Davis of Charlotte. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Hoppers Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Wade Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — Mrs. Dot “Sis” Chaney Phillips, 77, of 100 Grandchester Way, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Southwest Christian Hospice Facility in Union City, Ga. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church in Kings Mountain with the Revs. Richard Prow, Eugene Land and Jerry Milwood officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. ‘Pee-Wee’ Hughes
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Mrs. Blanche Logan “Pee-Wee” Hughes, 67, of 7921 Oriole St., Apartment 803, departed this life Monday, April 8, 2002, in Jacksonville, Fla., where she lived for the past 34 years. She was born June 27, 1934, in Cleveland County and was the daughter of the late Julius Logan and Beatrice Jamison Eaves. She is survived by her loving husband, William Hughes; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Joyce Spratt, Sandra Hamrick and Terry Belk, all of Charlotte, and Patricia Logan and Thomas Hutley of Shelby; a brother, Robert Jamison; a special friend, Bernice Phillips of Shelby; two aunts, Frances Jamison of Mooresboro and Geneva Jamison of Shelby; an uncle, David Jamison of Shelby; a sister-in-law, JoAnn Jamison of Shelby; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Genesis Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Young’s Chapel Cemetery in Mooresboro. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the chapel and at other times at the home of her sister, Patricia Hutley on Orange Street in Shelby.

Walter Crawford Jr.
SHELBY — Mr. Walter June Crawford Jr., 78, of 611 Whisnant St., died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at VA Medical Center in Asheville. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Walter June Sr. and Blanche Matheny Crawford. He retired from Sherrer-Baxter Olds as a parts and service manager. He was a member of New Bethel Church of the Nazarene, Amvets and American Legion. He also served in the Navy during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Ken and Boyce Crawford; and a sister, Ruth Shull. He is survived by his wife, Bertie Tessner Crawford of the home. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at New Bethel Church of Nazarene with the Revs. Jeff Beckett and Reed Jones officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. SHELBY — Mr. Arnold “Arnie” Mildenberger, 70, of 110 Thompson St., died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. A native of Lancaster, N.Y, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Mildenberger. He was self-employed and a member of Unity Baptist Church. He is survived by four children; and two grandchildren. A graveside service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Chris Little officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. before the service at Cleveland Funeral Services.
