MORGANTON — Mr. Benjamin A. “Gus” Sain Jr., 93, of Linville Street, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at North Morganton United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Woods officiating. Entombment will be in Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum with Masonic rites conducted by Catawba Valley Masonic Lodge 217. Alma Martin
SHELBY — Mrs. Alma Wylie Martin, 94, of 401 N. Morgan St., White Oak Manor, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at White Oak Manor. Born in Cherokee County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Ralph Loyd and Ola Parker Wylie. She was a homemaker and a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, where she was the oldest member. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wriston Shytles. She is survived by three nieces, Carolyn Kuykendall of Kings Mountain, Elaine Moss of Blacksburg, S.C., and Patricia McClough of Boiling Springs; and a nephew, Franklin Callahan of Kings Mountain. A graveside service will be today at 3 p.m. in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Brian Harris officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery. SHELBY — Mr. Harold Dean “Hal” Pearson, 69, of 1180 Dalton Drive, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Gaston County, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Lillie Mae Pearson. He was employed by Wix Filters as a security guard in Gastonia. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Disabled American Veterans. He also served in the Navy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Louis Pearson. He is survived by his wife, Kay Piper Pearson of the home; a son, Tony Pearson of Gastonia; three daughters, Laura McDaniel and her husband, Tim, and Paula Scism and her husband, Philip, all of Kings Mountain and Penny Douless and her husband, Van, of Monroe; a sister, Maggie Rollins of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Donnie Pearson of Gastonia; six grandchildren, Ashley and Travis McDaniel, Carmen and Davey Scism, Ben and Julia Douless; two nephews, Bob Rollins and Jim Pearson; two nieces, Jane Edwards and Tammy Pearson; special friends, Jeanette Cheshire, Jenna, James and Joseph Gladden, Aaron and Whitney Bridges, Allen Hudson and Michael Allen. A memorial service will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Rev. Pat Tiffany officiating. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 500 E. Robert Black Sr.
RALEIGH — Mr. Robert Dean Black Sr., 69, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, April 14, 2002, after a long and courageous battle against cancer. A native of Cleveland County and a veteran of the Korean War, he was employed by CSX Transportation for 37 years before retiring in 1987. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Betty; his son, Robert D. Black Jr. and wife, Heather, of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, the Rev. Ondra Black; and a sister, Sue Teele, both of Spartanburg, S.C. A service of celebration will be held today at 2 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Ken Altom and Jack Coffey officiating. Burial will be in Historic Oakwood Cemetery. The family received friends Monday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to New Hope Baptist Church Building Fund; or Hospice of Wake County.

CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Ronald Dale Carpenter, 63, of 226 Doc Wehunt Road, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Sparta. Born May 17, 1938, in Gaston County, he was a son of the late Perry George and Jessie White Carpenter. He was employed with B&C Brick Co. as a brick mason. He was a member of Lincolnton Wild Turkey Federation and Peach Bottom Hunting Club in Laurel Springs. He served in the Army at Germany. He is survived by two sons, Rusty and Billy Carpenter of Crouse; three brothers and their wives, Dean and Betty Carpenter of Cherryville, Jim and Frances Carpenter of Shelby, Wade and Pansy Carpenter of Shelby; and a sister, Rachel Beam of Cherryville. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Cone Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Wayne Key and Jerry Lail officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. SHELBY — Mrs. Veva Spangler Whisnant Falls, 91, of Carolina House of Forest City, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Carolinas House of Forest City. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late James Webb and Emma Laughlin Spangler. She was a former receptionist at Cleveland Memorial Hospital, worked in food service in Shelby City Schools and co-owned Whisnant’s Flower Shop in Polkville. She was a long-time member of Polkville United Methodist Church and past Worthy Matron Call Chapter of Order of Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, J. Ivey Whisnant; a second husband, D.C. Falls; and eight brothers and sisters. She is survived by two sons, James “Eddie” Whisnant and his wife, Catherine, of Shelby and Charles D. “Bud” Whisnant of Hampton, Tenn.; two daughters, Sara Libby Hughes and her husband, Henry, of Tarboro and Alice Whisnant Willis of Shelby; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Polkville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. MOORESBORO — Mr. John Kirk Humphries, 82, of 436 Duke Power Road, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at his home. A native of Cherokee, S.C., he was a son of the late Roland and Laura Allison Humphries. He was a retired carpenter and was retired from Cone Mills, Cliffside Plant. He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of Lavonia Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Velia Bartee Humphries of the home; a son, John Kelvin Humphries of Mooresboro; a brother, R.C. Humphries of Gaffney, S.C.; five sisters, Louise Bartee of Mooresboro, Annie Mae Bridges of Boiling Springs, Joyce Wilkie, Mary Bratton and Edna Stroup all of Gaffney; and three grandchildren. She was the owner and operator of Sassy Scissors in Kings Mountain. She is survived by her husband, Mike Hughes of Kings Mountain; a son, Chris Hughes of Kings Mountain; a daughter, Kelli Hughes of Kings Mountain; a stepson, Todd Hughes of Kings Mountain; her parents, Thomas and Katherine Morris Dellinger of Kings Mountain; her mother and father-in-law, Calvin and Ruth Hughes of Kings Mountain; a brother, Kenneth Wayne Dellinger and wife, Anna, of Kings Mountain; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Juanita Dellinger of Cloninger of Kings Mountain and Theresa and Mike Bookout of Gastonia; two grandchildren, Caleb Hughes and Cailyn Hughes both of Kings Mountain; four nephews; and one great-niece. SHELBY — Mr. Jack Mabry Jr., 76, of 304 Country Club Acres, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Claude J. and Connie Hayes Mabry. He graduated from Oak Ridge military Academy. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the retired owner of Mabry Office Equipment. He was formerly affiliated with K.M. Office Supply, J.J.&H. Inc., M.Y. Inc., Mabry Brothers Inc. and Shelby Printing Co. He belonged to First Baptist Church. He had served on the Board of Advisors of Gardner-Webb University, the N.C. ABC Board, the N.C. Board of Architects and the Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank. He was past chairman of the Cleveland County Mental Health Board and was a former member of Shelby Rotary Club, the Cleveland County Economic Development Commission, the Cleveland County Board of Elections and the Chamber of Commerce. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Hanson Mabry Towery; a son-in-law, Clyde Towery; a granddaughter, Connie Lee Towery; and a sister, Carolyn LeGrand. He is survived by his wife, Katherine “Sister” Quinn Mabry; a son and daughter-in-law, Tripp and Susan Mabry of Shelby; stepchildren, Kathie Burgin and her husband, Bobby, of Shelby, Peggy Porter of Atlanta, Lynn Roach and her husband, Tommy, of Raleigh; and David Royster and his wife, Sally, of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Franklin and Suzie Mabry of Shelby; a brother-in-law, Bill LeGrand of Shelby; and 11 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jill and Hanson Mabry, Quinn Burgin, Katherine, Will, Julia and Thomas Roach, David and Jay Royster and Sidney Porter. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
