KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Frank Phillips, 68, of 13 Bennett Drive, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at his home. Born in Gaston County, he was a son of the late Roy and Neva Willis Phillips. He was a member of Oak View Baptist Church in Kings Mountain and was an employee of Spencer-Pettus Machine Co. in Bessemer City. He served in the North Carolina National Guard for 11 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill Phillips, Howard Phillips and Tom Phillips; and three sisters, Betty Lefevers, Ruby Helms and Beulah Mitchell. He is survived by his wife, Betty Williams Phillips of Kings Mountain; two sons, Bobby Phillips and his wife, Cindy, and Scott Phillips and his wife, Kim, all of Kings Mountain; a daughter, Jenny Rikard and her husband, Barry, of Kings Mountain; three brothers, Melvin Helms and his wife, Judy, of Kings Mountain, Lewis Phillips and his wife, Angie, of Bessemer City and Jerry Phillips and his wife, Pat, of Bessemer City; two sisters, Louise Lee Roddey of Kings Mountain and Muriel Norwood of Bessemer City; six grandchildren, Michael Phillips and his wife, Kim, of Iron Station, Andrew Phillips, Stephanie Rikard, Stacy Phillips, all of Kings Mountain, and Mickey Ramsey; three great-grandchildren, Kayla Walker, Sydney Phillips and Alyssa Ramsey. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Oak View Baptist Church with the Revs. Jamey Billings, Todd Reynolds and David Turner officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. GERALD MELTON
MOORESBORO — Mr. Julious Gerald Melton, 63, of Camp Ferry Road, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Johnnie and Maebell McCurry Melton. He retired from Firestone Steel in Riverview, Mich., and Valley Rich Dairy in Asheville. He attended Hicks Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Lovie Lee Painter Melton of the home; two sons, Joel Melton of Shelby and Hylan Harris and his wife, Cheryl, of Goose Creek, S.C.; a daughter, Dr. Renee Smith and her husband, Paul, of Shelby; four sisters, Lillian Campbell and Doris Hamrick, both of Charlotte, Frances Bradley of Shelby and Helen Godfrey of Ellenboro; and two grandchildren, Kelli Harris and Robert Harris. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home with the Rev. Raymond Byrd officiating. Burial will be in Fredrick Memorial Garden in Gaffney, S.C. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
R.M. Latham
PATTERSON SPRINGS — Mr. R.M. Latham, 84, of 1614 S. Post Road, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 14, 1917, in Lancaster County, S.C., he was a son of the late Mason Gilbert and Josie Cleo Neal Latham. He retired December 1982 from J.C. Penny Co. as department manager after 47 years. He was a member of Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church and attended Pfeiffer College. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Cleopatra O. Latham and Victoria L. Logan. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Childress Latham of the home, and a daughter, Vicki LeGrand Latham of Greensboro. The funeral will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Billy Towery officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Palmer Mortuary.

SHELBY — Mrs. Edith Jane Byers Scott, 70, of 116 Shannonhouse St., died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at her home. Born in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late Willie A. and Gladys Dotson Byers. She retired from Shelby Café as a waitress. She attended Christopher Road Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Harrill David Scott and Jerry Willie Scott. She is survived by her husband, Harrill Scott of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger D. and Wanda Scott of Shelby; three sisters, Betty Head, Sue Ervin and Donna Keeter and her husband, Clyde, all of Shelby; three granddaughters, Angie Proctor and her husband, Donnie, Evie Bailey and her husband, Tommy, and Nikkie Scott; three grandsons, Douglas Scott and his wife, Rhonda, Brian Scott and Chris Scott; three great-grandsons, Houston Proctor, Will Proctor and Douglas Scott Jr.; and two great-granddaughters, Kayla Scott and Zelie Scott. The funeral will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mickey Heyward officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery. FOREST CITY — Mrs. Aquilla Hunt Coffey, 95, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Dorothy Jones, in Mooresboro. James Webb
EVENSVILLE, Tenn. — Mr. James Griffin Webb, 58, of 135 Fonda Drive, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at his home. Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Debro and Alma Pearson Webb. He was employed in textiles as a machinist. He was a Baptist and served in the Army. He is survived by his wife, Sina Gunter Webb of the home; two sons, Randy Webb of Shelby and Dwayne Webb of Fallston; a stepdaughter, Becky Blanton of Shelby; two stepsons, Max Shadden of Dayton, Tenn., and Charlie Shadden of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.; two brothers, Pete Webb and Jerry Webb, both of Shelby; two sisters, Katherine Wood and Jeanette Francis, both of Shelby; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. FOREST CITY — Mr. Wells Carpenter, 94, of 270 Horn Bottom Road, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. Mattie Holt
LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Mattie Selina Hallman Holt, 93, of 1217 Village Road, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at her home. Born July 20, 1908, in Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late Jonas S. and Nancy Cora Louise Reynolds Hallman. She was a homemaker and a member of River View Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hunley Holt. She is survived by seven sons, William “Bill” S. Holt of Maiden, Robert Lee Holt and James “Bud” Franklin Holt, both of Lincolnton, Gary Wilkins Holt and Charles Hunley Holt, both of Pumpkin Center, Tony Roger Holt of Boiling Springs and Kenneth Ray Holt of Hampstead; three daughters, Margie Louise Huffstetler-Worthy of Cherryville, Alene Holt Holland and Peggy Jane Holt, both of Lincolnton; a brother, Paul Deats Hallman of Lincolnton; a sister, Ethel Pearl Adams of Cherryville; 22 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. SHELBY — Mr. Jesse Zachary McClure Jr., 76, of 810 Poplar Springs Church Road, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Gaston County, he was a son of the late Jesse Zachary Sr. and Fannie Bell Jump McClure. He retired from Wix Corp. and was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater and received the Purple Heart medal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ollie Price McClure; a daughter, Jennifer McClure; a son-in-law, Ray Padgett; a brother, Woodrow McClure; and a sister, Wordlee Hester. He is survived by his wife, Marell Bryant Bridges McClure of the home; a son and his wife, Roger and Debra McClure of Gastonia; two daughters and a son-in-law, Elaine Padgett and Stephanie and Richard Viars, all of Gastonia; a stepson, Harold L. Bridges of Shelby; nine grandchildren, Jack Costner, Scott McClure, Jesse McClure, Ben Padgett, Robert Phelps, Jessica Phelps, Shane Parker, Allison McClure and Sara Viars; a great-granddaughter, Daphine McClure; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Jim Richardson officiating. Veva Falls
SHELBY — Mrs. Veva Spangler Whisnant Falls, 91, of Carolina House of Forest City, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Carolinas House of Forest City. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late James Webb and Emma Laughlin Spangler. She was a former receptionist at Cleveland Memorial Hospital, worked in food service in Shelby City Schools and co-owned Whisnant’s Flower Shop in Polkville. She was a long-time member of Polkville United Methodist Church and past Worthy Matron Call Chapter of Order of Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, J. Ivey Whisnant; a second husband, D.C. Falls; and eight brothers and sisters. She is survived by two sons, James “Eddie” Whisnant and his wife, Catherine, of Shelby and Charles D. “Bud” Whisnant of Hampton, Tenn.; two daughters, Sara Libby Hughes and her husband, Henry, of Tarboro and Alice Whisnant Willis of Shelby; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Polkville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Johnny ‘Pete’ Leach
SHELBY — Mr. Johnny “Pete” Leach, 50, of 506 N. Watterson St., died Monday, April 15, 2002, at White Oak Manor. A native of Kings Mountain, he was born Aug. 23, 1951, the son of Margaret B. Leach and the late John Marshall Leach. “Pete” was well known and loved by his community. He was a member of Holy Temple Baptist Mission where he served as an usher and a pastoral aide. He is survived by his mother, Margaret B. Leach of the home; a sister, July O. Hunter of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Julian Hunter; two uncles, Robert W. Blalock and John Lewis Blalock of Kings Mountain; a special aunt, Emma Blalock of Kings Mountain; special friends, Yvonne Beard of Shelby and Robert White, Sr. of Kings Mountain; a host of relatives and friends. ‘Frances’ Davis
LAWNDALE — Mrs. Minnie Lee Boykins Davis, 64, of 142 Falls St., died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. “Frances” as she was known to family and friends, was born March 22, 1938, to the late Frank and Mattie Bowman Boykins. She was a native of Bishopville, S.C., and was raised in Cleveland County. She resided in Washington, D.C. for many years. There she worked for the National Wildlife Federation. She attended Bible Way Community Temple Baptist Church in Washington. Her membership was with Mountain View Baptist Church in Lawndale. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Davis. She leaves to cherish fond memories a daughter, Renee Dempsey of Mount Rainier, Md.; a son, Jesse Floyd Davis of the home; a devoted niece, Peggy Eskridge of the home; a brother, Johnny Boykins of Philadelphia, Pa.; a son-in-law, Roosevelt Dempsey of Mount Rainier; four sisters-in-law, Jessie Mae Boykins of Philadelphia, Bertha Boykins, Emma Parks and Shirley Davis of Shelby; her best friend, Betty Allen of Shelby; and a special friend, Floyd Zimmerman of Washington, D.C.
