Hugh Hardin
SHELBY — Mr. Robert Hugh Hardin, 57, of 121 Jones Road, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at home. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of Margaret Jones Hardin of Lattimore and the late Ernest Hugh Hardin. He graduated from Crest High School in 1963 and immediately signed a professional baseball contract with the Detroit Tigers as a left-handed pitcher. He served with the N.C. Highway Patrol from 1968 to 1976. He retired as a life agent with Western-Southern Life Insurance Co. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and belonged to Lattimore Baptist Church. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Max E. Hardin. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 34 years, Reba Wilkins Hardin of the home; a son, Wesley Hardin of Rutherfordton; a daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Jackie Millsaps of Shelby; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Salena and Roy Grier of Lattimore and Becky and Wayne Clark of Shelby; and a grandson, Aaron W. Smith of Shelby. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Lattimore Baptist Church with Dr. Max Burgin and the Rev. Jim Wall officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home. SHELBY — Mrs. Doris Thomas McSwain, 67, of 603 Hillcrest Drive, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Herman Lee Thomas Sr. and Willie Mae Irvin Thomas. She retired from Hanover Securities Co., delivered the Charlotte Observer for many years and was a homemaker. She belonged to Christopher Road Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Rodgers McSwain; four brothers, Horace Thomas, Willis Ray Thomas, Herman Thomas and Odus Franklin Thomas; a sister, Louise Hunsinger; a sister-in-law, Billie Thomas; and a son-in-law, Chuck Ferguson. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Wanda McSwain, Danny and Terry McSwain and Randy and Terri McSwain, all of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Hoyle Bostic of Cliffside; a brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Patricia Thomas of Shelby; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Tom Hambright and Cheryl and Steve Gallman, all of Shelby; a brother-in-law and his wife, Cletus and Ina Hunsinger of Shelby; and six grandchildren, Melissa Arrowood and her husband, Matt, Charles Ferguson, Richard McSwain, Ashley McSwain, Lauren McSwain and Thomas McSwain. A graveside service will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Mickey Heyward officiating. SHELBY — Mr. Robert Gold Wilson, 71, of 1101 N. Morgan St., formerly of Delray Beach, Fla, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was a retired former owner and operator of Wilson Nursery in Delray. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Latham and Emma Gold Wilson. He is survived by his two brothers and sisters-in-law, Boyd and Joanne Wilson and Jim and Doris Wilson, all of Lawndale; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and John Yarbro of Kings Mountain; two nephews and their wives, John and Regina Yarbro and Terry and Renee Wilson; three nieces and their husbands, Mitzi and Charles Ramsey, Jill and Mike Hinson and Julie and Quinton Rikard; a number of great-nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be today at 4 p.m. at Kadesh United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Alan Sailors officiating. JULIAN — Mrs. Madge Louise Pruitt Hullender, 87, of 6039 Smithwood Road, formerly of 2007 Taylor Road, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington. She was a homemaker and a member of Eastside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Carol and Georgia Hambright Pruitt; husband, Richard Ira Hullender; and a sister, Evelyn Pruitt Putnam. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janie Frances and Glenn Griffin of Julian; two sisters, Muriel P. Honeycutt and Betty Jo P. Eaker, both of Shelby; a brother, Carl Pruitt of Merritt Island, Fla.; a grandson, Allen Griffin of Key West, Fla.; granddaughter, Julia Griffin Deltano of Julian; and three great-grandchildren.
