David Phillips
CONOVER — Mr. David Phillips, 62, formerly of County Home Road, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, in Hickory. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Jay Hugh and Virginia Phillips. He worked as a machine operator at Synthetics Finishing for 30 years and attended Morning Star First Baptist Church in Hickory. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Jean Phillips and a sister, Lena Bell Phillips. He is survived by his wife, Vivian Phillips; two sons, Isaac Phillips of Claremont and James Phillips of Hickory; a daughter, Lori Phillips of Claremont; four grandchildren, a great-grandchild; three brothers, James “J.K” Phillips of Newton, Bobby Phillips of Baltimore, Md. and Ralph Phillips of Shelby; six sisters, Geneva Phillips and Ruby Griggs both of Hickory and Mary Ann Phillips, Lenora Ruff, Peggy Roberts and Margaret Wilson, all of Shelby. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Morning Star First Baptist Church in Hickory with the Rev. Webster E. Lytle officiating. Burial will follow in Southside Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Dirk M. Thompson Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

GROVER — Bonnie Reno, 73, 117 Kentbury Road, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness’s. Carl Pruett
SHELBY — Mr. Carl Allen Pruett, 69, of 811 S. Post Road died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, he was born Oct. 25, 1932. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Carl was a graduate of Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He also attended the School of Divinity at Duke University. He belonged to the Church of Latter-day Saints in Shelby. Carl held teaching positions in Georgia and Florida before joining the staff at Spartanburg Methodist College in 1969, where he was professor of English and head of the English department. He retired in 1997. An accomplished musician, Carl played the carillon at Spartanburg Methodist College. Since retirement, he was an avid collector of antiques and pottery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Allen and George Carl Pruett, and two sisters, Evelyn Putnam and Madge Hullender. He is survived by two sisters, Betty Jo Eaker and brother-in-law, Donald, and Muriel Honeycutt and brother-in-law, Manning Jr.; and an aunt, Inez Allen. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A celebration of Carl’s life will be held Friday evening, May 3, at 7 at the Church of Latter-day Saints on Country Club Road, Shelby. The family has requested instead of flowers that contributions be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Laura Virginia Stroupe Clark, 77, of 404 N. Oak St., died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at home. Born in Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Preston and Oshie Camp Stroupe. She was owner of Laura’s Day Care in Lincolnton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, R.D. Clark, and a son, Ricky Clark. She is survived by one son, Wayne Clark of Lincolnton; two daughters, Kathy Craft and Vicky Williams, both of Lincolnton; and a daughter-in-law, Miriam Clark of Lincolnton; and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Warlick Funeral Home with the Revs. Harold Leatherman and Rick Stroupe officiating. Burial will be in Hollybrook Cemetery. SHELBY — Mrs. Louise Whitaker Hayes, 77, of 5314 Spring Lane, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Liver-more, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Billy Wade and Frances Bowles Whitaker. She was a retired certified nursing assistant and had worked at Turner’s, Shelby Convalescence and Beam’s. She belonged to Faith Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister. She is survived by her husband, James H. Hayes of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Charlene H. and Michael Lemmons of Mooresboro; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Russell Hayes of Patterson Springs, Steve Hayes of Marietta, Ga., and Mickey and Linda Schoonmaker of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Bill Musgrave of Abilene, Kan.; 10 grandchildren, Christina Lemmons, Jessica Hayes, Melissa Ocull, Linda Falcone, Dustin Hayes, Justin Hayes, James Schoonmaker, J.R. Hayes, Jason Hayes and Billy Cook; and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church, with the Revs. Barry Goodman and Johnny Owens officiating. Raymond Sharpe Jr.
BOILING SPRINGS — Mr. Raymond David Sharpe Jr., 46, died April 28, 2002, at Crawley Nursing Home. Born Sept. 4, 1955, to the late Raymond David and Sarah Grace Sharpe. A graduate of Crest High School class of 1973, he enlisted in the Army, where he retired after 21½ years of service. During his military life, he served in several different branches of the Army. He served in the Infantry Division, 82nd Airborne Unit of Fayetteville, graduated from the Drill Squad and was later promoted to Drill Sergeant, where he served for 10 years. He also served as a Range Inspector. He was a cum laude graduate of Fayetteville State University; he held a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in sociology. He worked as a counselor with the Fayetteville Youth Center after retiring from the Army. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Sharpe; four children, Nichelle, Jamaal, Mathew and Jonathan, all of Fayetteville; his grandfather, Sam Petty of Shelby; five brothers, Dwight Petty, Daryl Sharpe, Ralphael Sharpe, Todd Sharpe and Keith Sharpe, all of Shelby; two sisters, Adrianne Sharpe and Joyce Robbs, both of Shelby; four sisters-in-law, Connie Petty, Carolyn Sharpe, Sherrie Sharpe and Linda Sharpe; and two brothers-in-law, Jerry Smith and James Robbs. The funeral will be Thursday at noon at Colvin Funeral Home in Fayetteville. The family will receive friends locally at the home of Adrianne and Jerry Smith, 1221 White Ave., Shelby. CASAR — Mr. Reuben Guy Martin, 78, of 112 Moriah School Road, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. Born April 19, 1924, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Julius and Biddie Hastings Martin. He retired as a forklift operator with Great Lakes Carbon Plant. He was a member of Casar United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Lawrence, Hugh Lee and Ray Martin; and a sister, Lillian Smith. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean Newton Martin of Casar; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steve Martin of Casar and Julius Harold and Jeannie Martin of Tryon; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Kenneth Beam of Casar; two brothers, Grady Martin and Loyd Martin, both of Casar; two sisters, Mary Hoyle of Shelby and Emma Randall of Morganton; two granddaughters, Laura Shuford and her husband, Clint, and Janna Martin; three grandsons, Jonathan Martin, Chris Martin and Robert Martin; and one great-granddaughter, Serra Shuford. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Casar United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Thompson and Dr. Horace DuBose III officiating. 'Jack’ Joyner
SHELBY — Mr. Carlos Wilson “Jack” Joyner, 88, of 717 Ridgeview Drive, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at his home. Born Sept. 4, 1913, in Forsyth County, he was a son of the late Grover C. and Ethel Renegar Joyner. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church for 65 years, former president of the Hoey Bible Class, and an honorary member of the church council. Jack came to Shelby in 1936 as a manager of Belk Stevens Co. He and his wife, Verna, later realized the dream of owning their own ladies and children’s shop in uptown Shelby known as Joyner’s Shop. After several years he joined the Stamey Co. in Fallston, managing the store, and after 20 years, retired from there in 1978. He was past president of the Merchant’s Association, a past president of Shelby Chamber of Commerce, former member of the Shelby Lions Club, and was, at one time, director of the Shelby Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Verna Elmore Joyner; and two brothers, Howard and Craig Joyner. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Jim Lutz; a granddaughter and her husband, Elizabeth and Reid Bridges; a grandson and his wife, Will and Julie Lutz; three granddaughters, Emily, Nancy, Katie Bridges, all of Shelby; two sisters-in-law, Ruth E. Balentine of Raleigh and Anne E. Falls of Shelby; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Bob and Coye Elmore of Lawndale. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church with Drs. John Boggs and Joe Reeves officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before to the service. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Claudia and Jim Lutz, 801 Phillips St., Shelby.
