CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Ivey Sikes Auten, 80, of 104 Glen View Drive, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. Born Feb. 2, 1922, in Stanly County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Vann Sikes and Minnie Lee Sikes King. She was a homemaker and a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Auten Sr.; and a son, Robert Vann Auten. She is survived by a son, John A. Auten Jr. of Cherryville; a brother, John Henry Sikes of Duncanville, Ala.; and four grandchildren, John A. Auten III, Robert Nathaniel Auten, Kathryn English Auten and Ivey Marie Auten. A graveside service will be today at 3 p.m. in New London Cemetery with the Rev. Allen Huff officiating. Memorials may be made to Shelby Presbyterian Church, 2216 E. Graham St., P.O. Box 1444, Shelby, NC 28151-1444; or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Stanly Funeral Home of Albemarle is in charge of arrangements.

Joel Ledford
SHELBY — Mr. Joel David Ledford, 31, of 2317 Flint Hill Church Road, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, he was formerly employed by Davis Automotive as a mechanic. He was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a half sister, Crystal Leigh. He is survived by his parents, Roger David Ledford and stepmother Gladys Ledford, both of Forest City, and Madeline Ledford Leigh and stepfather Andy Leigh of Shelby; a son, Dustin Hollifield of Shelby; a daughter, Brittany; a brother, Chris Ledford of Boiling Springs; a stepbrother, Larry Ledford of New House; and two half sisters, Amber Michelle Ledford of Forest City and Natalie Leigh of Casar. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Flint Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Keith Dixon and Vernon Moore officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Dan and Hilda Blanton Holt, 123 E. Branch Ave., Boiling Springs. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made for funeral expenses in care of Flint Hill Baptist Church, 2207 Flint Hill Church Road, Shelby, NC 28152.

Pearlie Young
SHELBY — Mrs. Pearlie Bell Bullard Young, 82, of 401 N. Morgan St., died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. A native of Athens, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Arthur Bullard and Mozelle Turner Bullard. She is survived by five stepdaughters, Sarah Mask and her husband, David, Doris Hunt and her husband, Charles, Louise Ross, Betty Young and Dianne Young Wilson, all of Shelby; two stepsons, Hilton Young and his wife, Patricia, of Suffolk, Va., and Charles Young and his wife, Jennie, of Forest City; a sister, Betty Webber and her husband, James, of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Lonnie Bullard of Shelby; a special friend, Eugene Wilson of Shelby; a godson, Fred Mills of Raleigh; a special cousin, Mary Roberts of Kings Mountain; and a host of stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at New Life Christian Church in Kings Mountain. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Cemetery in Shelby. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Webber, 2320 Oak Grove Road, Shelby. Costner Funeral Home of Gastonia is in charge of arrangements.

Coralie Dobbins
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Coralie Hampton Dobbins, 94, of Hill Crest Adult Care Facility, died Thurs-day, May 2, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. A graveside service will be today at 4 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Park with the Rev. Bob Clinard officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 to 3:45 p.m. before the service at Crowe’s Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Western Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive No. 999, Charlotte, NC 28215-3220.

Sara Jones
SHELBY — Mrs. Sara Wilma Jones, 91, of 2466 Old Gaffney Road, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Century Care of Shelby. Born in Blacksburg, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Will and Timpie Lavender Proctor. She re-tired from Cleveland Cloth Mill and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, R.H. Jones; a daughter, Molly Foster; and a son-in-law, Coell Foster. She is survived by three daughters, Evelyn Williams of Shelby, Peggy Hamrick of North Augusta, S.C., and Carlotta Nelson of Columbia, S.C.; three sons, Harry Jones of Hawthorn, Nev., James Jones of Shelby and Dean Jones of Travelers Rest, S.C.; 17 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Sunday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Revs. Tommy Buchanan, Clarence Williams and Jeffery Hayes officiating. Burial will be in Mount Paron Baptist Church Cemetery in Blacksburg. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of her son, James Jones, 2466 Old Gaffney Road, Shelby.

‘Little Herb’ Whisnant
SHELBY — Mr. Christian Antwan “Little Herb” Whisnant, 21, of Crawford Street, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A graveside service will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Webb Memorial Lawn. Genesis Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

SHELBY — Mr. William McClain, 47, of 312 First Broad St., died Friday, May 3, 2002, at his home. Arrangements will be announced by Genesis Funeral Service and Chapel.

Berlie Barnes
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Berlie Barnes, 79, of 209 Morris St., died Friday, May 3, 2002, at his home. Arrangements will be announced by J.W. Gill & Sons Funeral Home.

Sally Degree
SHELBY — Mrs. Sally Mae Smith Degree, 85, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Hickory Grove, S.C., she was the daughter of the late John and Ella Lowe Smith, She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and also the Order of the Eastern Star Love Chapter No. 9. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Degree Sr.; a son, Ray Degree; a daughter, Faye Degree; sisters, Louise Long, Mattie Tyler, Minnie Byers, Mable Dawkins, Cleo Lott and Lucille Robbins; and three brothers, Willie, Sam and Tom Smith. She leaves to cherish fond memories, three sons and daughters-in-law, Willie and Delorice Degree of Detroit, Bobby and Francie Degree of Ohio and Mike and Elise Degree of Grover; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Josephine Wilson of Asheville and Mammie and Roland Borders, Betty and Floyd Batton, Maryanne Allen and Cordia and Willie Burgess, all of Shelby; 28 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Roseboro officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and other times at the home of Cordia Burgess at 1651 Friendship Road in Shelby. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Surratt
SHELBY — Mrs. Betty Lucille Lindsey Surratt, 62, of 704 Apartment 8, N. Lafayette St., died Thurs-day, May 2, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Maple Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Dover officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Lucy Wright
SHELBY — Ms. Lucy Ann Hord Wright, 88, of 1625 Fallston Road, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at Cleve-land Regional Medical Center. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Oscar Patterson, Jr.
SHELBY — Mr. Oscar Patterson, Jr., 82, of 803 Brittain Drive, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at his home. A native of Cleveland County, he was born Sept. 24, 1919. On April 14, 1977, he retired as a lieutenant from the Shelby City Police Department after serving there for 37 years. He worked with the Cleveland County Fair Association for many years. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Hoey Bible Class , Woodman of the World, 32nd Degree Mason Scottish Rite, Cleveland Lodge 202, AF & AM and enjoyed basket weaving and quilting. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on Shore Patrol. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Killian Patterson who died July 19, 1990 and his parents, Oscar Patterson, Sr. and Daisy Roberts Patterson. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Oscar and Julie Patterson, III of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane P. and John D. Crowder of Leland; a brother, Jim Patterson of Shelby; three grandchildren and their spouses, Jenny C. and D. J. Gregory of Greenville, Joseph S. and Betsy Crowder of Delco and Elizabeth P. and Glenn Cassle of Sylva; three great-grandchildren, Madison Crowder, Caroline Cassle and Katherine Cassle and a very special friend, Sarah Davis. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Boggs and Dr. Joe Reeves officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Palmer Mortuary. Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 200 E. Marion St., Shelby NC 28150-4610 or Woodburn Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1140, Leland NC 28451.

Buddy Ray Dills
RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Buddy Ray Dills, 64, of 401 U.S. 221 S. Hwy., died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Poors Ford Baptist Church with the Revs. Jimmy Cox and Willard Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday at 1:30 p.m. the home of Ruby Strader at 102 Kansas St. in Spindale. Crowe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joel Ledford
SHELBY — Mr. Joel David Ledford, 31, of 2317 Flint Hill Church Road, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. The family will receive friends at the home of Hilda Blanton Holt at 123 E. Branch Ave. in Boiling Springs. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Clay-Barnette.

Lucille Gould
PITTSBORO — Mrs. Lucille Gould, 84, of Fearrington Village, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at the Lutheran Home, West in Hickory. She worked for many years for the U.S. State Department and was retired from Cassidy and Associates Consulting Firm. She is survived by many cousins. A graveside service was held 2 p.m. April 27 in the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. Walker’s Funeral Home in Chapel Hill is in charge of arrangements.

William Franklin
SHELBY — Mr. William Edgar “Bill” Franklin, 77, of 3650 W. Stagecoach Trail, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, he was a retired self-employed salesman and a Baptist who attended Sandy Plain Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Franklin. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Whiteside Whitley Franklin of the home; a daughter, Patricia Mahon; two sons, Steve Franklin of Kings Mountain and Craig Franklin of Statesville; a daughter, Tammy Franklin of Statesville; a stepdaughter, Brenda Faircloth of Kernsville; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sandy Plains Baptist Church with Dr. Don McSwain officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Cleveland Funeral Services and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Sandy Plains Baptist Church.

Clayton McClain
SHELBY — Mr. Clayton “J.R.” McClain, 77, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, he was born Sept. 10, 1924, to the late Allie and Maggie McClain. He was retired from Club Carolina in Cherryville and was formerly employed by Cline Dairy Farm. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two sons, Robert “Geno” McClain and James Edward McClain; two brothers, Allie McClain Jr. and Enslow McClain; a sister, Elizabeth Jamerson; two brothers-in-law, Mazlee Holland and Lamar Gordon. He is survived by his life long friend and ex-wife, Ida McClain of Shelby; four sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Iva McClain, Donnie and Barbara McClain and Danny McClain, all of Shelby, James R. and Kathy Littlejohn of Gaffney, S.C.; six daughters, Ida Ross of Shelby, Martha Crosby of Norfolk, Va., Linda Schenck, Virginia Degree, Gloria McClain and Janie Robbs, all of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Winslow and Betty McClain of Kings Mountain; four sisters, Louise Holland of Shelby, Helen Gordon and Dora Clark of Kings Mountain and Ruth and Harvey Thurman of Shelby; 29 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Kings Mountain with the Rev. Earnest Simon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and other times at the home of his daughter, Janie Robbs, 1731 Stoney Point Road, Shelby. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

James Price
GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mr. James Stanley “Pepper” Price, 50, of 305 Eighth St., died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at their homes. White Columns Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Waters
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Mary Wright Waters, 94, of 110 Woodbark Lane, formerly of 600 Landing St., died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at her home. She was the daughter of the late William Albert and Anna Bessie Henson Wright and the widow of the late Roland Waters. She was a charter member and the oldest member of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church, a retired textile employee and a homemaker. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Stanley Waters. She is survived by her three daughters and son-in-laws, Pearl W. and Ken Hullender of Kings Mountain, Charlene W. and Gerald Lutz of Bessemer City and Nell Waters of Kings Mountain; four brothers, the Revs. Silas Wright and Paul Wright both of Spartanburg, Saul Wright and Job Wright, both of Cowpens, S.C.; a sister, Sarah Coggins of Cowpens; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church with the Revs. Michel Pruitt, Silas Wright, Odas Shelton and Paul Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home and other times at the home. Harris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
