FOREST CITY — Mrs. Clara Suttles, 90, of 302 Mayes Road, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at her home. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen, with the Rev. Ronnie Suttles officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
R. Wayne Dick
CHARLOTTE — Mr. R. Wayne Dick, 57, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. Wayne was born on Jan. 15, 1945, in Stanley County, a son of Margaret Poplin Dick and the late Harold Dick. He was a graduate of Albemarle High School and Pfeiffer College, where he received a bachelors degree in accounting. He became a certified public accountant and taught accounting at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Appalachian State University. Wayne was a partner in charge of the Western Regional Office of Deloitte, Haskins, and Sells in Hickory, president of Burris Industries in Lincolnton, owner and CEO of Charles Harland, Inc, vice president and general manager of the Leather and Motion Division of Thomasville Furniture and vice president and general manager of Lifestyle Leather Products. Wayne enjoyed traveling, reading, fishing and cooking, but his greatest joy came from his love for his wife, his two children and his grandson. In addition to his mother, Wayne is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Judy Herrin Dick; his daughter, Natalie Dick of Charlotte; his son Harland Dick of Mooresville; and his grandson, Connor Chepul. Also surviving are his three brothers, Barry Dick of Albemarle, Jimmy Dick of Eastover, S.C., and Roger Dick of Albemarle; and by his sister, Peggy Grantham, of Abbeville, S.C. There will be a service to celebrate Wayne’s life at 2 p.m. on Friday at Harry and Bryant “Chapel in the Oaks,” 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, with the Reverend William E. Roth officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be private. The family of Wayne Dick wants to express their gratitude to the doctors and nurses on Four Tower at Carolinas Medical Center for the medical care and comfort they gave during Wayne’s illness. SHELBY — Mr. Mallard Guy Brooks Jr., 67, of 1203 Wesson Road, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. Born May 1, 1935, in Shelby, he was a son of the late Mallard Guy Brooks Sr. and Lila LeGrand Brooks. He attended Fishburne military School and graduated from Appalachian State Teacher’s College in 1957. He taught school for a brief period of time before beginning work at the Nehi/Royal Crown Bottling Co., which was owned by his father. He retired in 1988 as president and co-owner of the company. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty June Hollander Brooks. He is survived by his two sons, Mallard Guy Brooks III and his wife, Ann B. Brooks, grandsons, Steven Brooks and Jeffery Brooks, all of Raleigh, and Mark LeGrand Brooks and his wife, Patricia C. Brooks, grandsons, Steven Brooks and Jeffery Brooks, all of Shelby; a sister, Jacky B. Stone of Shelby; and two special cousins, Jimmy Childress and Bernice Latham of Shelby. A graveside service will be Thursday at 3 p.m. in Cleveland Memorial Park with the Rev. Glen Davenport officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Palmer’s Mortuary and at other times at the home. BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mr. Henry William Ferguson, 73, of 132 Bear Den Road, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney, S.C. James Misenheimer
ROCKWELL — Mr. James Lee Misenheimer, 72, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at his home. Born July 7, 1929 in Rockwell, he was a son of the late Clarence Lee and Clara Brady Misenheimer. He was a 1947 graduate of Rockwell High School and served in the Air Force in Guam, Hawaii and Puerto Rico from 1948 to 1950. He was a former employee of Rockwell Radio and Electric and then worked for Rockwell Casket Company, retiring after 35 years in 1994 as plant manager. He was an active and dedicated member of St. James Lutheran Church, where he had served as Sunday School Treasurer for 52 years, a member of the Men’s Bible Class, was a former Church Council Member and had served on numerous committees. He was a member of The Rockwell Civitan Club for over 50 years, was a former club president and former Civitan of the Year. He was a member of Keller Memorial Masonic Lodge #657, the York Rite Bodies, Rowan Shrine Club, and the Oasis Shrine Temple in Charlotte. A member of the Miller-Russell American Legion Post #112 and the Rockwell AMVETS. He had helped with numerous Boy Scout Fundraisers, past president of the Rowan County Shrine Club and member of Lutheran Men in Mission. He is survived by his wife, Roselyn Fisher Misenheimer, whom he married Jan. 20, 1950; three sons, Stephen E. Misenheimer of Rockwell, David L. Misenheimer of Shelby and foster son, M. Darrell Lamb of Rockwell; a daughter, Deborah M. Plumb of Louisville, Ky.; two granddaughters, Neena Leigh Misenheimer and Leslie Ann Misenheimer, both of Shelby; a sister, Nell M. Tolley of Rockwell; and eight additional grandchildren. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. Craig Sigmon officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. James Porter III
BALTIMORE, Md. — Mr. James Thomas Porter III, 47, of 333 Stillwater Road, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at home. Born Nov. 29, 1954, in Washington, D.C, he was a son of the late James T. II and Mary E. Hubbard Porter. He served in the Navy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several aunts and uncles, Robert & Lois Hubbard, Joe and Eunice Walters, Ethel Hubbard, Charles Hubbard, J.A. Hubbard and L.G. Bowen. He is survived by his uncle, Eugene Hubbard of Lawndale; and three aunts, Kat Bowen and Ruby Hubbard, both of Shelby and Margaret Hubbard of Lawndale. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Kadesh United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Eddie Ingram officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Willis Brown Jr.
ELLENBORO — Mr. Willie Brown Jr., 71, of 173 Brown Lane, died Monday, May 13, 2002. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Willis H. Sr. and Omie B. Wilder Brown. He served in the U.S. Army for 13½ years where he served in the infantry and rose to the rank of sergeant. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a recipient of the Purple Heart and a member of the 5th R.C.T. He was a combat veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Campfield Memorial Baptist Church where he was a past deacon. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Hartman and Mary Alice Brown; and a brother, Leon Brown. He is survived by his wife, Dot Williams Brown of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Linda Brown of Ellenboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Mike Billingsley of Ellenboro; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Jenny and Ben McWhirter of Shelby, Shirley Morris of Salisbury, and Daisy Brown of Rockwell; a special nephew, Ken Brown of Rockwell; and a grandson, Steven Brown of Henrietta. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Campfield Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Joey Cantrell and Eugene Passmore officiating. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Cornelius Hiawatha Edwards, 67, of 415 Crocker Road, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at University Hospital in Charlotte. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Wilch C. Caldwell officiating. The body will be viewed from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Ebony and White’s Funeral Service and will be placed in the church two hours before the service. Burial will follow in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Pearl Eubanks
SHELBY — Mrs. Pearl Lattimore Eubanks passed away Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. A longtime resident of Charlotte, she returned to her Cleveland County roots in 1997. She belonged to New Bethel Baptist Church and was a former resident of Sterling House and Carillon Assisted Living of Shelby. In Charlotte, she was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years, where she was a Sunday school teacher, vacation bible school volunteer and officer in the Nancy Stone Adult Sunday School Class. She was instrumental in the formation and early success of the Wilkinson Boulevard Residents Association, responsible for the beautification of the Wilkinson Boulevard area, among other projects. Ms. Eubanks retired form Southern Bell in 1988 after 25 years of service. She was also employed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, working at Harding and South Mecklenburg High schools during the 1960s and 1970s as a guidance counselor’s secretary. Her children, Mike and Gail Eubanks and their families, including daughter-in-law Teresa Stowe Eubanks, son-in-law Thomas Hines and grandsons Evan Eubanks and Vincent and Graham Lanceford, survive. The families live in Lucia and in Savannah, Ga., respectively. Other survivors include her sister, Phyllis Powers of Cherryville; her sister and brother-in-law, Lib and Haley Dedmond, her brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Nancy Lattimore, and her brother and sister-in-law, W.F. and Francis Lattimore, all of Lawndale. Six nephews, who will serve as pallbearers, and four nieces, and their families, also survive her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. May she rest in His perfect peace. A service to celebrate her many contributions to the lives of her family and friends will be held at New Bethel Baptist Church in Lawndale, on New Bethel Church Road off NC 182, Tuesday at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church two hours before the service. SHELBY — Mrs. Lois Allen Hamrick, 79, of 1438 Mount Sinai Church Road, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd Allen and Lillie Morrison Allen. She was a homemaker and retired seamstress. She belonged to Mount Sinai Baptist Church, the Margie Ledbetter Sunday School Class and Mount Sinai Baptist Church Quilters. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Hugh Allen; a daughter, Wanda Karen Hamrick; and a granddaughter, Karen Lynn Hamrick. She is survived by her husband, Herman Hamrick of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Pat Hamrick, Michael and Vanda Hamrick, Raymond and Mary Frances Hamrick and Scott and Shelia Hamrick, all of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and James Johnson of Bolivia, N.C.; two sisters, Gladys Edmonson of Boiling Springs and Mary Sue Hollifield of Shelby; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Joey and Janet Hamrick, Kevin and Brandy Hamrick, Jarrod and Tabitha Hamrick, Amy and Steven Smith, Justin Hamrick and his fiancée, Nesie Greene, Christa Johnson, Pam Clark, Ansley Hamrick, Andrew Hamrick, Polly Etters and Lee Etters; and one great-grandchild, Brianna Clark. MOORESBORO — Mrs. Nancy Ever White Whitaker, 91, of 1034-1 Steel Bridge Road, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Cleveland County, a daughter of the late Greenberry and Phoebie McCraw White. She retired from Ora Mill and had been a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church for 79 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Shull Whitaker; a grandson, George Wayne Dellinger; and two sisters, Velia Jolley and Marie Weaver. She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Carolyn and William Robert Dellinger of Statesville and Marolyn and Joseph R. Davison of Shelby; five grandchildren, Bill Dellinger, Karen Dellinger, Rex and Jill Davison, Janie and Mike Hardin and Beth and Neal Walker; four great-grandchildren, Eli Hardin, Sydney Hardin, Hollyann Walker and Lyda Walker; a special sister-in-law, Louise Whitaker; a special niece and nephew, Glenda and Randall Greene and Oren and Margaret Jolley; three brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, and several other nieces and nephews.
