FOREST CITY — Mr. William Vaughn Hamrick, 77, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Willow Ridge in Rutherfordton. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Florence Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Gantt officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park with Naval military honors. Roy Clawson
TODD — Mr. Roy Dean Clawson, 71, of Timber Lakes Drive, died Tuesday evening, May 14, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born March 24, 1931, in Ashe County. Mr. Clawson was a member of South Fork Baptist Church. He retired with 27 years of service as a truck driver for Carolina Freight Carriers Corp., Cherryville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Clawson and Ray and Winnie Clawson Bledsoe; two brothers, Joe and Tom Clawson; and one sister, Sue Wiley. Mr. Clawson is survived by his wife, Eldora Lewis Clawson; three daughters, Darlene Greene and her husband, Steve, of Cherryville, Janet Mishue and her husband, Larry, of Kittrell and Wanda Domkowski and her husband, Wayne, of Youngsville; one son, Gary Clawson and his wife, Betty, of Grassy Creek; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Groff of Clearwater, Fla., and Dorothy Minchoff of Quarryville, Pa.; and three brothers, R.C. Bledsoe of Oxford, Pa., Gene Bledsoe of Lancaster, Pa., and Bobby Bledsoe of Quarryville. Services for Roy Dean Clawson will be conducted today at 3 p.m. at South Fork Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Clay McLean and the Rev. Jeff Vogler. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Howell Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday at the church. RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Curtis Atwood Davies Sr., 85, of 259 Ridgeview Drive, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. Donald Greene
GROVER — Mr. Donald R. Greene, 65, of 2004 Cleveland Ave., died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late John Everette Greene Sr. and Helen May Grass Greene. He was employed by J.P. Stevens Cleveland Cloth Mill, where he was a weaver. He was a member of Grover Church of God and served in the Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John Greene Jr., Calvin Greene and Norman Greene; and a sister, Nellie Greene. He is survived by two sisters and their husbands, Maxine and Clyde Nance of Gastonia and Sarah and Jack Horne of Lattimore; and a special friend, the Rev. Deborah Mullinax of Mooresboro. A graveside service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Deborah Mullinax officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 7:30 at Cleveland Funeral Service.

SHELBY – Mr. Philip Henry Antes, 85, of 104 Cider Drive, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in New York City, he was a son of the late Phillip Frank and Elizabeth Miller Antes. He was former owner/operator of Phil’s Bar & Grill of Bloomfield, N.J. He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater and was a former Prisoner of War of the German Army. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Ex-Prisoners of War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorretta Antes; and his second wife, Helen Antes. He is survived by a stepdaughter, Lorraine Singalevitch of Cherryville; and two grandchildren, Jason Singalevitch and his wife, Julie, of Kings Mountain and Heather Endre and her husband, Mark, of Mason, Ohio. A memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer with the Rev. Gene McDowell officiating. GAFFNEY, S.C. — Deacon Odell Mickles Sr., 76, of 621 Broad St., husband of Mrs. Annie Lattimore Mickles, died Monday night, May 13, 2002, at 8:40 p.m., in the Upstate Carolina Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Odessa Mickles Rankins. He was a member of Mikes Creek Baptist Church and served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, trustee and member of the All Male Chorus. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a retired employee of Broad River Brick Co. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Lattimore Mickles of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Arnita M. Singleton of Clinton, Md., and Mrs. Annie Carol Mack of Blacksburg, S.C.; three sons, James O. Mickles of Shelby, Eddie Dean Mickles of the home and Odell Mickles Jr. of Gaffney; one sister, Mrs. Shirley Colquitt of Shelby; two brothers, Edward Rankins and Bobby Joe Rankins of Shelby; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Mikes Creek Baptist Church with the pastor, Dr. S.M. Johnson, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. LAWNDALE – Mrs. Estelle Buff Brackett, 73, of 1264 Belwood-Lawndale Road, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at her home. Born April 5, 1929, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Marvin Lee and Lona Mozelle Newton Buff. She retired from PPG as supervisor and trainer. She was a member of St. Peters United Methodist Church and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Women. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl McCoy Brackett; and two sisters, Betty Jean Buff and Adelle Hastings. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, the Rev. Carroll and Phyllis Brackett of Roxboro and Rickey Keith Brackett of Casar; a daughter, Joy Anita Brackett Teague of Lawndale; four brothers, Ralph Buff and Roy Lee Buff, both of Casar, Wayne Buff of Connelly Springs and Gerald Buff of Vale; five sisters, Mildred Lail of Casar, Ruby Walker Sain of Lawndale, Mureil Lingerfelt of Maiden, Faye Swink of Hickory and Maxine Truitt of Newton; six grandchildren, Brian Brackett, Shelley Brackett, Donnie Brackett, Michelle Rowland, Christopher Teague and Gabrielle Teague; and seven great-grandchildren, Jamie Greene, Jessie Greene, Alexis Rowland, Mikeal Greene, Andrew Brackett, Renee Sizemore and Brittany Sizemore. GROVER – Mr. Joseph Pinekey Scism Jr., 50, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at his home. He was a son of the late Joseph Pinekey Sr. and Ruby Leigh Scism. He was self-employed as a farrier. SHELBY — Mr. Mallard Guy Brooks Jr., 67, of 1203 Wesson Road, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Hospice. Born May 1, 1935, in Shelby, he was the son of the late Mallard Guy Brooks Sr. and Lila LeGrand Brooks. He attended Fishburne military School and graduated from Appalachian State Teacher’s College in 1957. He taught school for a brief period of time before beginning work at the Nehi/Royal Crown Bottling Co., which was owned by his father. He retired in 1988 as president and co-owner of the company. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty June Hollander Brooks. He is survived by his two sons, Mallard Guy Brooks III and his wife, Ann B. Brooks, grandsons, Steven Brooks and Jeffrey Brooks, all of Raleigh, and Mark LeGrand Brooks and his wife, Patricia C. Brooks, grandsons, Collin Brooks and Benjamin Brooks, all of Shelby; a sister, Jacky B. Stone of Shelby; and two special cousins, Jimmy Childress and Bernice Latham of Shelby. John Mitchell
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. John Henry Mitchell, 66, of 108 N. Dilling St. died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was the son of the late John C. and Viola A. Mitchell. Formerly of Gainesville, Ga., he has resided in Kings Mountain for 22 years. He retired in May 1999 from City Auto and Truck Parts, where he was employed as a mechanic for 30 years. He painted signs since the age of 16 and was the owner of Mitchell Sign Service. He was a dedicated member of First Congregational Church of Christ, where he was a member of the church choir. He is survived by his wife, Ann L. Mitchell; two sons, Woody Mitchell of Pascaguola, Miss., and Sherman L. Steele of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Ralph Mitchell of Gainesville and James Mitchell of Baltimore; a sister, Evelyn Turner of Gainesville; two grandchildren, Katherine Kirkland of Kings Mountain and Jarris of Charlotte and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Christ with the Rev. Henry McDowell officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service. R. Wayne Dick
CHARLOTTE — Mr. R. Wayne Dick, 57, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. Wayne was born on Jan. 15, 1945, in Stanley County, a son of Margaret Poplin Dick and the late Harold Dick. He was a graduate of Albemarle High School and Pfeiffer College, where he received a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He became a certified public accountant and taught accounting at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Appalachian State University. Wayne was a partner in charge of the Western Regional Office of Deloitte, Haskins and Sells in Hickory, president of Burris Industries in Lincolnton, owner and CEO of Charles Harland, Inc, vice president and general manager of the Leather and Motion Division of Thomasville Furniture and vice president and general manager of Lifestyle Leather Products. Wayne enjoyed traveling, reading, fishing and cooking, but his greatest joy came from his love for his wife, his two children and his grandson. In addition to his mother, Wayne is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Judy Herrin Dick; his daughter, Natalie Dick of Charlotte; his son Harland Dick of Mooresville; and his grandson, Connor Chepul. Also surviving are his three brothers, Barry Dick of Albemarle, Jimmy Dick of Eastover, S.C., and Roger Dick of Albemarle; and by his sister, Peggy Grantham, of Abbeville, S.C. There will be a service to celebrate Wayne’s life at 2 p.m. on Friday at Harry and Bryant “Chapel in the Oaks,” 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, with the Rev. William E. Roth officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be private. The family of Wayne Dick wants to express their gratitude to the doctors and nurses on Four Tower at Carolinas Medical Center for the medical care and comfort they gave during Wayne’s illness. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Andrew R. SherGill, 14, of 100 Country Creek Drive, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at his home. He was born in Birmingham, England. He was a student at Gaston Day School, where he participated on the Varsity Tennis team and other school-wide community service projects. He enjoyed playing paintball with his peers. He was very gifted academically. Well known for his integrity and honesty. He will be greatly missed by the entire Gaston Day Community. He attended David Baptist Church. He was a Star Scout and a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 92 of First Baptist Church, Kings Mountain. He is survived by his parents, Hardyal “Bob” and Dr. Paramjit “Pam” Kaur SherGill of Kings Mountain; and a brother Paul SherGill of Kings Mountain. SHELBY – Mr. Timothy Alan Hamrick, 36, of 506 Whisnant St., died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Dixon School Road in Kings Mountain. Born Jan. 17, 1966, in Orange County, he was employed in the forestry products trade. He was a member of Davidson Memorial Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Hardin Hamrick. He is survived by his father and stepmother, Bruce Hamrick and Eloise Cash Hamrick of the home; two brothers, Eric Hamrick and Kyle Hamrick, both of Kings Mountain; and two stebrothers, Keith Blanton of Blacksburg, S.C., and Phillip Blanton of Kings Mountain. SHELBY — Mr. Jerry Mitchell “Mitch” Williams, 64, of 727 W. Elm St., died Monday, May 13, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Richard and Ila Martin Williams. He retired from the city of Shelby, electrical department, in 1981. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Sheriff’s Department Association and served in the Army. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved working with children and often took them fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne and Jack Williams. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Ozell Holland Williams of the home; one adopted son, Billy Ray Taylor of Shelby; a brother, Burgin “Buddy” Williams and his wife, Janice, of Clover, S.C.; and three sisters, Blanche Williams of Morganton and Lois Beck and Nancy Bowen, both of Shelby. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Billy Bowen, Jim Rice and Dr. Betty Ledbetter officiating. CASAR — Mrs. Ruby Frances Parker Propst, 73, of 116 Lanark Drive, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. Born Dec. 7, 1928, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Martha Frances Smith Parker. She retired from Drexel Furniture in Morganton as a furniture repairer. She was a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee Parker and Milard Parker; and two sisters, Lunette Smith and Eva Walker. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, John Colon Propst of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Mitchell and Naomi Propst of Casar; a daughter, Diane, and Steve McCauley of Casar; a brother, Carmie Parker of Casar; three grandsons; one granddaughter; one great-grandson; and two great-granddaughters.
