KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Elsie Burton Greene, 94, of 1413 Shelby Road, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Rodney and Essie Goforth Burton. She was wife of the late Grover Willis Greene. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, and retired from Mauney Mills. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert Greene, and daughter, Jeanette Irvin. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Willis G. and Barbara Greene of Grover, and Charles D. and Sarah Greene of Kings Mountain; two daughters and sons-in-law, Magdalene “Maggie” and Chester Cash of Holden Beach, and Charlotte and Dean Martin of Smyrna, S.C.; a sister, Sylvia Hallman of Kings Mountain; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Richard Prow and Jerome Cash officiating. Burial will be in El Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of her son, Charles Greene, 603 Phifer Road, Kings Mountain. Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church, 120 Linwood Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

Faye Davis
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Faye H. Davis, 66, of Bethany Church Road, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at home. The funeral is Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Gray’s Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steve Hardin officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Harrelson Funeral Home, and at other times at 967 Bethany Church Road, Forest City.

MILL SPRING — Mr. Charles Michael Williams, 49, of 2801 Adger Lake Road, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at home. The funeral is today at 11 a.m. at Big Level Baptist Church, with the Revs. Robert Orr and Everette Wallace Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family received friends Sunday. Crowe’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Julian Hartridge Papot III, 54, formerly of Stanley and Savannah, Ga., died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Century Care in Cherryville. The funeral will be private for family only. Carpenter’s Funeral Home is serving the family.

Mattie Roberson
SHELBY — Mrs. Mattie Pearl Roberson, 85, of 107 Abernathy St., died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby. Born April 4, 1917 in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Grayson Davis and Janie Sisk Davis. She retired after 30 years as a waitress at Shelby Fish Camp. She belonged to New Bethel Church of the Nazarene, was a member of the Jolly Elders, Willing Workers Sunday School Class and the Cleveland Pines Nursing Home Ministry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Roberson; and five sisters, Lonia Glover, Maude Anthony, Essie Piercy, Lois Oats and Cleo Black. She is survived by a daughter, Ponice Lowery of Shelby; grandchildren and their spouses, Rhonda Kay and Walter Hartman of Polkville, Jimmy Lowery, Danny and Lisa Lowery, Patty Lowery Lay and Sandy Robbins, all of Shelby; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at New Bethel Church of the Nazarene, with the Revs. Reed Jones and Robert Andress officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, and at other times at the home. Velma Moore
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Velma Beam Moore, 86, of Summitt Place, formerly of the Patterson Grove community, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late David Christopher and Lizzie Nora Camp Beam and the widow of James Edwin Moore. She was a homemaker and a member of Patterson Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Janice M. and Jessie Putnam of Bessemer City, Jean M. and Ray Herndon and Nancy M. and David Smith all of Kings Mountain and Grace M. Phifer of Shelby; 13 grandchildren, Andy and Jane Putnam, Robby and Melissa Putnam, Mark and Debbie Herndon, Chris and Mary Herndon, Lesley Phifer, Michael, Jennifer, Emily, Christopher and Stephen Smith; and nine great-grandchildren, Harrison, Nicholas, Rachel, Jordon and Joshua Putnam, Tyler, Lindsey, Claire and Chloe Herndon. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Patterson Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Tim Hendrick and David Blanton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home. RUTHERFORDTON — Mrs. Christine Saunders Geer, 81, of 391 Gilmer Edwards Road, died Friday, May 17, 2002, at Willow Ridge Nursing Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Crowe’s Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.

FOREST CITY — Ms. Shirley Ann Walker, 66, of 109 Longview Drive, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Presbyterian Healthcare in Charlotte. A memorial service will be Monday at 4 p.m. at Sandy Mush Baptist Church with the Revs. Kyle Turner and Claude Walker officiating. The family will receive friends at the home. McKinney-Landreth is in charge of arrangements.

Alice Patterson
LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Alice Johnson Patterson, 101, of 931 N. Aspen St., died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Cardinal Healthcare. The funeral will be Monday at 4 p.m. at Rock Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Franklin Lowery officiating. Burial will be in Gold Hill/Rock Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at he church and at other times at the home of her daughter, Bertha Graham, at 5963 Tuckers Grove Church Road, Iron Station. VERO BEACH, Fla. — Mr. Sidney Wall, 86, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Florida Baptist Retirement Center in Vero Beach, Fla. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Lakeland Funeral Home Chapel in Lakeland, Fla.

SHELBY — The Rev. Daniel David Swink, 52, of 107 Debby Drive, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Cleveland Funeral Services.

Walter Feaster
HICKORY — Mr. Walter Eugene Feaster, 54, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Valley Nursing Center. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at New Ellis Chapel Church in Shelby with the Rev. A.A. Ponder officiating. Burial will be in First Baptist Church Cemetery in Earl. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Catawba Funerals and Cremations is in charge of arrangements.

‘Buddy’ Roberts
SHELBY — Mr. Charles P. “Buddy” Roberts, 74, of 25 Fanning Drive, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, in Shelby. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Charles P. and Lila Dover Roberts. He retired as executive vice president for Doran Textiles. He was past president and Paul Harris Fellow, Shelby Rotary, past president and board member Life Enrichment Center, past elder, deacon, and Sunday school superintendent and a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church. He started the Lunch Buddy program in Shelby, he was a Boy Scout leader and past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber. He served in the Navy during World War II and also served in the Army in Korea. He is survived by his wife, Betty Mauney Roberts; two sons, Charles P. Roberts III and his wife, Dianne, of Summerfield and David M. Roberts of Shelby; a daughter, Mary Roberts Nifong and her husband, Philip, of High Point; a brother, William F. Roberts and his wife, Patricia, of Mooresville; two sisters, Betsy Schenck of Carboro and Jean Adams of Greensboro; and five grandchildren, Shelby Caroline Roberts, Emily Ann Nifong, Mark Roberts Nifong, Lauren Elizabeth Roberts and Natalie Ann Roberts. A memorial service will be today at 2 p.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church with Dr. Luke Harkey and the Rev. Allen Huff officiating. The family received friends Friday at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home. Memorials may be made to Life Enrichment Center, 1270 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC 28150; or to Shelby Presbyterian Church, 226 East Graham St., Shelby, NC 28150.

ROANOKE, Va. — Mr. Robert “Bob” Jack Dillard, 72, died Thursday, May 16, 2002. A graveside service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the New Camp Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Oakey’s South Chapel in Roanoke, Va., is in charge of arrangements. Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

JoAnne Thompson
CHARLOTTE — Mrs. JoAnne Thompson, 73, died Monday, May 6, 2002. Services will be today at 2 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Service, Pineville Chapel. Burial will be private. Sylvia Millwood
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Sylvia Holden Millwood, 61, of 905 N. Piedmont Ave., died Friday, May 17, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Heath Springs, S.C., a daughter of the late Jim Holden. She was a member of David Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, where she was an active member. She was a member of the Gaston Literacy Council, a volunteer with Life Enrichment Center of Cleveland County and co-chair of the survivors’ group for the Relay for Life of Kings Mountain. She retired from Springs Industry in Lancaster, S.C., and retired from Lowes Home Improvements of Shelby. She is survived by her husband, Benny E. Millwood of Kings Mountain; her mother, Annie Peach Holden of Lancaster, S.C.; two daughters, Melanie Anderson and her husband, Steve, and Stacy Caston and her husband, Chris, all of Kings Mountain; a stepson, Scott Millwood of Lancaster; a stepdaughter, Kim Rogers and her husband, Shane, of Gastonia; two brothers, Douglas Holden of Houma, La., and Russell Holden of Heath Springs; and eight grandchildren, Daryl Penny, Stefanie Anderson, Kenny Cooper, Kevin Millwood, Krista Anderson, Taylor Mills, Steven Anderson II and Lauren Cooper. The funeral will be Monday at 4 p.m. at David Baptist Church with the Rev. Jody Griffin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Melanie Anderson, 102 Anderson Acres, Kings Mountain. ‘Rick’ Walker
SHELBY — Mr. Richard “Rick” E. Walker, 46, of 914 Surrey Drive, died of cancer Friday, May 18, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 13, 1955, in Cleveland County, he was employed by Lackey-Blue Real Estate as a Realtor. He was a member of Drury Dobbins Baptist Church. He is survived by his parents, Norris Y. Walker and Ivy C. Walker of the home; a brother, Randy Walker of Shelby; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Rhonda Cooper of Shelby and Janet and Danny Holtsclaw of Ellenboro; two nieces, Ashley and Stacey Cooper of Shelby; two nephews, Andrew Walker of Shelby and Landon Holtsclaw of Ellenboro; extended family, Melissa Lavender of Shelby, Dana Gettys of Ellenboro, Angela Lovelace of Blacksburg, S.C., and Beth Hamrick of Grover; and by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Race Path Baptist Church with the Revs. John Godfrey and Claude R. Walker officiating. The body will be place in the church 30 minutes before the service. Interment will be in Sandy Run Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Ralph Greene Sr.
SHELBY — Mr. Ralph Miller Greene Sr., 86, of 511 W. Sumter St., died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 21, 1916, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Sidney Miller and Annie Ella Huffstetler Greene. He was owner and operator of Cleveland Barber Shop. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He served in the Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Selma Callahan Greene; six brothers, Griffin Greene, Gilbert Greene, Twitty Greene, Jasper Greene, Harley Greene and Paul Greene; and seven sisters, Ada Greene, Beatrice Justice, Nutrice Wright, Eulalia Doster, Vertie Ellis, Wanda Greene and Pauline Clark. He is survived by his wife, Alja Blackwell Greene of Shelby; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph Miller Jr. and Becky G. Greene of Charleston, S.C., and Dale D. Sr. and Vi H. Greene of Shelby; and four grandsons, Joel Miller Greene of S. Lake Tahoe, Calif., Michael Dale Greene of Charleston, S.C., and Dale Drew Greene Jr. and Patrick Olsby Greene, both of Shelby. A graveside service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park with the Revs. Tony Tench and David Lohr officiating. Timothy Hamrick
SHELBY – Mr. Timothy Alan Hamrick, 36, of 147 Wells Road, Kings Mountain, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Dixon School Road in Kings Mountain. Born Jan. 17, 1966, in Orange County, he was employed in the forestry products trade. He attended Davidson Memorial Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Hardin Hamrick. He is survived by his father and stepmother, Bruce Hamrick and Eloise Cash Hamrick of the home; two brothers, Eric Hamrick and Kyle Hamrick, both of Kings Mountain; and two stebrothers, Keith Blanton of Blacksburg, S.C., and Phillip Blanton of Kings Mountain. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Davidson Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Ridge officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home.
