Marjorie Douglas
CHARLOTTE — Mrs. Marjorie Lutz Douglas, 82, of 8919 Park Road in the Southminster Retirement Community, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Douglas was born in Shelby on Nov. 13, 1919, a daughter of the late John Ogburn and Annie Mae Webb Lutz. She graduated from Shelby High School in 1936 and attended Duke University, from which she received a bachelor of arts degree in 1940. She worked in the Signal Corps in Washington D.C., during World War II and thereafter as an elementary school teacher in Shelby and Newell. A lifelong Methodist, she resumed her education in 1944, earning a master’s of religious education from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology in 1945. Following her graduation from Emory, Mrs. Douglas worked as director of Christian Education at Central United Methodist Church in Asheville and at First Methodist Church in Charlotte. In 1950 she was named Charlotte’s “Career Woman of the Year” by the Charlotte Observer. In 1951 Mrs. Douglas married Dr. John Munroe Douglas of Davidson, a physician in the practice of internal medicine and cardiology in Charlotte. She retired from her position with the Methodist Church with the birth of the first of her three sons in 1952 and spent the next 20 years as a homemaker and mother. She was actively involved in the school and community life of her children, inspiring all three to become Eagle Scouts. During the 1970s and 1980s she returned to the profession of teaching, serving as an instructor in reading at Central Piedmont Community College and writing an unpublished children’s book for her grandchildren, “Tell Me Another Story.” Throughout her adult life she was an active laywoman in the United Methodist Church. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church where she served on the board of trustees and on the administrative board and as president of the United Methodist Women. She was instrumental in founding a youth basketball program at the church and was also a Sunday school teacher there for many years. She was also involved in a number of other community activities, serving as a docent for the Mint Museum of Art and as president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Mecklenburg County Medical Society, and as a board member of the YWCA in Charlotte, the Florence Crittendon Home and the Shepherd’s Center. After moving to the Southminster Retirement Community in 1996, she was an active member of the community’s welcoming committee. In addition to her devotion to her family, church and community, Mrs. Douglas was an accomplished painter, an avid gardener and an insatiable reader. She loved travel, both locally to a home in North Myrtle Beach and to the North Carolina mountains and, in her later years, on cruises to various destinations in North America and Europe. She will be remembered for her glowing smile and personality and as a warm and loving person who personified the ideal to love your neighbor as yourself. The family would like to acknowledge the devoted care of Mrs. Douglas’ care providers over the past two years, especially Marcene Boulware and Leola Black. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, James Edgar Lutz and John Franklin Lutz, both formerly of Shelby. She is survived by her devoted husband of 51 years; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. John M. Jr. and Jan Douglas of Denver, James O. and Lou Douglas of Nashville and Davison M.
