SHELBY — Mrs. Vangie Lee Haynes Nix, 88, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center. She was a loving sister, mother and grandmother who willingly gave so much of herself to the care of her family. She was a member of New Bethel Church of the Nazerene, a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and participated in the Jolly Elders Senior Organization. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Nix; her parents, Charlie T. and Mae Wilson Haynes; and two daughters, Mattie Sue Nix and Jo Anne Covil. She is survived by three brothers and a sister-in-law, Charles “June” Haynes of Shelby, Larry and Anne Haynes of Newport News, Va., and Maurice and Louise Haynes of Wilmington; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Evelyn and Luther Greene of Lawndale and Dorothy Sisk of Shelby; and a grandson and his wife, Randy and Arlene Nix of Charlotte. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at New Bethel Church of the Nazerene with the Rev. Bob Andress officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home and other times at the home of Evelyn Greene, Elam Road in Lawndale. Memorials may be made to New Bethel Church of the Nazerene, 706 Hamrick St., Shelby, NC 28150.

Makayla Wingate
WINSTON-SALEM — Makayla Rose Wingate, infant daughter of Javais Markeit Wingate and Tiffany Stollings, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Forsyth Medical Center. Graveside services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Wingate Family Cemetery in Iron Station with the Rev. James Coleman officiating.

Hazel Glenn
SHELBY — Ms. Hazel Novella Glenn, 89, of 1404 N. Lafayette St., died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was born Aug. 7, 1912, the daughter of the late Robert Lee Sr. and Myrtle Queen Glenn. She was a retired nursing assistant in the infirmary for the N.C. School of the Deaf in Morganton. She was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Glenn Jr., Newell Glenn, Don Glenn; and three sisters, Lillie Mae Glenn, Blanche Dayberry and Margaret Meyers. She is survived by four brothers, Alvin Glenn of Belwood, Wray Glenn of Lawndale, Frank Glenn of Polkville and Bill Glenn of Shelby; three sisters, Wilma Bridges of Columbus, Ohio, Peggy Fama of Norfolk, Va., and Dorothy McCurry of Fallston; and numerous neices and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Ingram officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 219, Fallston, NC 28042.

LAWNDALE — Mrs. Mabel Williams Lawrence, 68, of 3734 Rube Spangler Road, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Genesis Funeral Service.

Donald Hoyle
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Donald Eugene Hoyle, 71, of 115 W. Main St., died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia. He was born in Lincoln County on March 19, 1931. He was the son of the late Benjamin Harrison and Eva Jane Carothers Hoyle. He worked as a bank manager at Nations Bank in Cherryville and retired after 32 years of service. He was a member of Cedar Grove Lutheran Church of Vale where he served on the church council. He was a member of Lincolnton Masonic Lodge No. 137 and was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College in Lenoir. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Bridges Hoyle; a daughter, Cynthia Renee Hoyle; and a sister, Bernice Hoyle Houser. He is survived by his wife, Sonja Black Hoyle; a daughter and a son-in-law, Gina Black and David Ross of Mebane; two sisters, Christine Craig and Vivian Willis, both of Vale; two grandchildren and their spouses, Susan and Mike Runser and Michael and Tracie Ross, all of Little River, S.C.; three-great-grandchildren, Bayley Runser, Matt Johnson, and Stu Johnson, all of Little River. A graveside service was Sunday at Cedar Grove Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dale Pederson and Dr. Judith F. Houser officiating. Burial wasbe in the church cemetery. The family received friends Sunday at Stamey Funeral Home in Cherryville.

Mildred Stewart
BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mrs. Mildred White Stewert, 80, of 101 Calles St., died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney. A private graveside service was Tuesday morning at Mountain View Cemetery. White Columns Funeral Service in Blacksburg is in charge of arrangements.

Dessie Adams
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Dessie Lackey Thornburg Adams, 87, of 405 W. Carroll St., died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Carolina Care Center in Cherryville. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Cherryville Church of God with the Revs. Todd Phillips and Ron Lackey officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends at the home of a granddaughter and her spouse, Denise and A.B. Beam at 1107 Delview Road in Cherryville. Memorials may be made to the Cherryville Church of God Building Fund, 810 E. Main St., Cherryville, NC 28021. Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

‘Fireball’ Hutchins
GASTONIA — Mr. Kenneth “Fireball” Gambrell Hutchins, 70, of 2812 Mary Ave., died Monday, May 27, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. He was born Sept. 15, 1931, and was the son of the late Hubert and Viola Wright Hutchins. He served in the Army as a corporal for four years. He was a member of Bessemer City American Legion Post No. 243 and a member of the Gastonia Moose Lodge No. 1303. He retired from Wix Filters, Ozark Plant, after 41 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Gamble. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Louise Peterson Hutchins of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Jeffrey and Barbie Hutchins of Gastonia; a daughter, Glenda Hutchins Bridges of Bessemer City; a brother-in-law, Worth Gamble of Gastonia; a sister and brother-in-law, JoAnn and Donald Fredell of Sugarland, Texas; and three grandchildren, Jamie Chad Bridges of Bessemer City, Bobby Bledsoe of Norton, Va., and Brandy Snow Hutchins of Gastonia. Pallbearers will be the Bessemer City American Legion No. 243. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at New Life Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Ware officiating. Burial will be in Bessemer City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Greene Funeral Service – West Chapel. Memorials may be made to New Life Baptist Church Building Fund, 606 S. 11th St., Bessemer City, 28016.

Mae Runyans
SHELBY — Mrs. Mae Hutchins Runyans, 89, of 331 Grice St., died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Rutherford County, she was retired from Lutz-Austell Funeral Home. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Mary Jean Walker Hutchins; her husband, A. Craig Runyans; three brothers, Rube Hutchins, Jeff Hutchins; and Mut Hutchins and a sister, Carrie H. Lane. She is survived by a sister, Myrtle Anderson of Shelby; a niece, Wanda Johnson of Shelby; two nephews, Bobby Lane and Jack “Cookie” Lane, both of Shelby; and 10 great-nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Franks and Jim Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville, S.C. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home and other times at the home of Myrtle Anderson, 717 S. Washington St., Shelby. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

John Starr
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. John “Butch” Starr, 50, 155-A Ebenezer Road, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clarence Wright officiating. Burial will follow in St. James United Methodist Church in York, S.C. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. at the church. J.W. Gill and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be sent to the funeral home at 303 Lake Montonia Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

Lettie Hullender
SHELBY — Mrs. Lettie Lou Crowe Hullender, 77, of 700 N. Morgan St., died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at her home. A native of Rutherford County, she graduated in 1942 from Hollis High School. While her first husband, Jack Hughes, was in service during World War II, she worked with “Rosie the Riveter” at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, Calif. She assembled the superchargers on the engines for B-24 bombers. She retired in 1986 from Dover Mill. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Oliver and Sarah Campbell Crowe; a husband, George Hullender; a sister, Ethel Bridges; five brothers, Buren, Ryburn, Grady, Boyd and Norris Crowe. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Hughes and Gary Wayne Staymate of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, John Oliver and Rea Crowe Jr. of Mooresville; two sisters, Cassie Pangle of Shelby and Essie Martin of Polkville; a sister-in-law, Lucille Crowe of Shelby; special friends, Phil and Ashley Sanders; and three godchildren, Megan, Billy and Coleman Sanders. A private memorial service will be held. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, Shelby Building Fund, 215 Patton Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

BOSTIC — Mrs. Ola Mae Norville Perschelli, 89, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Autumn Care Nursing Center in Forest City. A graveside service will be held today at 3 p.m. in the Brittain Presbyterian Church cemetery. Washburn and Dorsey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pearl Lawrence
LAWNDALE — Mrs. Pearl Coates Lawrence, 101, of 3732 Rube Spangler Road, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Genesis Funeral Service.

Edna Willis
BELWOOD — Mrs. Edna Wright Willis, 88, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, she was the third of nine children born to the late William Albert and Dillie Willis Wright. Edna was valedictorian of her graduating class at Fallston High School. She also received the Hattie L. Nix Nursing Award and the Sam Schenck Five-Dollar Gold Piece Award for best grades in anatomy during her nurse’s training at Shelby Hospital School of Nursing. She was known throughout the area as a loving and caring registered nurse. She was an active member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church and formerly taught in the children and adult Sunday school departments. She was a choir member and served several years as volunteer adult and children’s choir director. She was past president of United Methodist Women. She received the Gastonia District Laity Service Award from St. Peter’s United Methodist Church for the year 2000. She also served her community as a Red Cross volunteer, high school reading volunteer, Loy White summer camp volunteer and Upper Cleveland Group Ministry news reporter and volunteer. She was a member of Fallston Order of the Eastern Star No. 282 and served as Worthy Matron five times. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Flay Alexander Willis; and two brothers, Walter E. Wright and William A. Wright. She is survived by three children, Margaret Christopher and her husband, Woody, of Shelby, Grace Simpson of Hickory and David Willis and his wife, April, of Stanley; four brothers, Furman A. Wright of Cherryville, Joe Wright and his wife, Mazel, of Casar, John Wright and his wife, Nell, of Lincolnton and Kenneth Wright and his wife, Daphine, of Dallas; two sisters, Viola W. Matheny of Caroleen and Nettie W. Willson of Sumter, S.C.; two sisters-in-law, Bobbie Wright of Asheville and Ruby Willis Blanton of Newton-Conover; six grandchildren, Bruce Dalton and his wife, Sue, of Charlotte, Michael Dalton and his wife, Tammra, of Pensacola, Fla., Darin Simpson of Hickory, Jason Willis of Madison, Wisc., John Willis and Dana Willis of Charlotte; two stepgrandchildren, Graham and Summer Smith of Stanley; four great-grandchildren, Taylor and Melody Dalton of Pensacola and Kellie and Anna Dalton of Charlotte; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friends Gail Morrison, Dorothy Willis and Marie Wellmon. The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel in Fallston, with Dr. Robert Parsons Jr. and the Rev. Billy Towery officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service, and at other times at the home of Margaret and Woody Christopher, 432 Christopher Road, Shelby. Elsie Greene
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Elsie Burton Greene, 94, of 1413 Shelby Road, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Rodney and Essie Goforth Burton. She was wife of the late Grover Willis Greene. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, and retired from Mauney Mills. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert Greene, and daughter, Jeanette Irvin. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Willis G. and Barbara Greene of Grover, and Charles D. and Sarah Greene of Kings Mountain; two daughters and sons-in-law, Magdalene “Maggie” and Chester Cash of Holden Beach, and Charlotte and Dean Martin of Smyrna, S.C.; a sister, Sylvia Hallman of Kings Mountain; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Richard Prow and Jerome Cash officiating. Burial will be in El Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of her son, Charles Greene, 603 Phifer Road, Kings Mountain. Mattie Roberson
SHELBY — Mrs. Mattie Pearl Roberson, 85, of 107 Abernathy St., died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby. Born April 4, 1917 in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Grayson Davis and Janie Sisk Davis. She retired after 30 years as a waitress at Shelby Fish Camp. She belonged to New Bethel Church of the Nazarene, was a member of the Jolly Elders, Willing Workers Sunday School Class and the Cleveland Pines Nursing Home Ministry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Roberson; and five sisters, Lonia Glover, Maude Anthony, Essie Piercy, Lois Oats and Cleo Black. She is survived by a daughter, Ponice Lowery of Shelby; grandchildren and their spouses, Rhonda Kay and Walter Hartman of Polkville, Jimmy Lowery, Danny and Lisa Lowery, Patty Lowery Lay and Sandy Robbins, all of Shelby; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at New Bethel Church of the Nazarene, with the Revs. Reed Jones and Robert Andress officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, and at other times at the home.
