Edna Noblitt
SHELBY — Ms. Edna Grace Noblitt, 83, of 711 S. Washington St., died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born May 9, 1919, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late William Logan and Amanda Gold Noblitt. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers. She is survived by a niece, Patsy Hutchins of Dallas, Ga.; and five nephews, J.L. Hawkins of Manassas, Va., Wayne Brooks of Huntersville, Bruce Noblitt of Charlotte, Gilbert Noblitt of Shelby and Ronald Noblitt of Lancaster, S.C. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Franks officiating. Interment will be in Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Harry Lanning
BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mr. Harry Lyles Lanning, 71, of 454 Possum Trot Road, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. He was born in Blacksburg in Cherokee County and was the son of the late Clyde William and Ruth Amanda Moore Lanning. He was a Baptist and was retired from the Navy and the Gaffney city police force. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve, Veterans of Foreigh Wars, the American Legion and the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his wife, Peggy McMurray Carroll Lanning of the home; two sons, Clyde Thomas Lanning of Clinton and Gary William Lanning of Parish, N.Y.; two daughters, Rhonda Lanning and Sheila Diane Lanning of Snohomish, Wash.; three brothers, Grady Lanning of Pittsboro and Doyle Lanning and Earl Dean Lanning, both of Blacksburg; three sisters, Bertie Dover, Betty Floyd and Sandra Anderson, all of Blacksburg; and 12 grandchildren. The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Vernon Craig, Earl Dean Lanning and A.Z. McDaniel officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. There will be military pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Gordon Mortuary in Blacksburg and at other times at the home of Bertie Dover at 577 Lookout Tower Road, Blacksburg. SHELBY — Mrs. Mary Lucille Biedler Piner, 102, of Shelby, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the Pines at Davidson. She was a retired schoolteacher and a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Wheeler Piner; and her parents, Vernon and Mary Lizzie Biedler. She is survived by a nephew, George Piner of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a niece. LAWNDALE — Mrs. Mable Williams Lawrence, 68, of 3734 Rube Spangler Road, departed her earthly life Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was born Nov. 30, 1933, the daughter of Annie Mae Ussery Williams of Lawndale and the late Lawrence Williams. She was a faithful member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Kellom, Edmond and Dolphus Williams. In addition to her mother, she leaves to cherish fond memories, her loving husband of 51 years, Johnnie Lawrence Jr., a son and daughter-in-law, Johnny Lee and Antoinette Lawrence of High Point; a brother and sister-in-law, Benjamin and Shirley Williams of Fayetteville; a step-grandson and wife, Linwood and Connie Carter; three step-great-grandchildren, Victoria, Kimburlee and Justin Carter and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Belwood with the Elder James Benton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. LAWNDALE — Mrs. Pearl Coates Lawrence, 101, of 3732 Rube Spangler Road, departed her earthly life Monday, May 27, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. She was born Sept. 22, 1900 in Putnam County, Ga., the daughter of the late Meddie Coates and Mollie Gipson Coates. She was a homemaker and a resident of Cleveland County for 80 years. She was the mother of the church and a faithful member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church until her health declined. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Lawrence Sr.; five sons, Thurman Lawrence, Charlie Lawrence, Meddie Lawrence Sr., James Lawrence and Cotie Lawrence Sr. She leaves to cherish fond memories two daughters, Annie Pearl Webber and Aileen Lawrence Frederick; seven sons, Johnnie Lawrence Jr., Berry A. Lawrence, Paul Lawrence Sr., Elder Franklin Lawrence, David Lawrence, Bobby Lawrence and Isaac Lawrence; a host of nieces and nephews; 175 grandchildren; 200 great-grandchildren; 100 great-great-grandchildren; 50 great-great-great-grandchildren, and many relatives and friends. SHELBY — Miss Carolyn Lovelace Hayes, 68, of Century Care of Shelby, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was a private duty caregiver for Alzheimers patients. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar Monroe Lovelace and Iva Jeanette Gibson and a daughter, Phyllis Robinson. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cathy and Steve Lazenby of Shelby, Sandy Robinson Rogers of Florida and Sylvia and Robin Bowman of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Phil and Faye Lovelace of Shelby; three grandchildren, Derek Bowman and Millie Rogers both of Shelby and Mark Lazenby of Louisville, Ky. A graveside service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Allen Davis officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 to 9 at Gordon Mortuary at 400 W. ANDERSON, S.C. — Mr. Relius Thomas Reece, 94, formerly of Laurens, S.C., died Monday, May 27, 2002, at the Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home. FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Mr. Willie Clarence Culbreath, 68, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at INOVA Fairfax Hospital. He belonged to Peace Baptist Church of Dunn Loring, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hettie Culbreath; and three sisters, Nellie Downing, Betty Long and Thelma Wright. He is survived by a daughter, Teretta J. Boykins of Fairfax, Va.; three sons, Willie J. Culbreath of Shelby, Larry G. Culbreath of Falls Church and Gary E. Culbreath of Forestville, Md.; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Annie Frances Culbreath of Falls Church and Katherine Culbreath of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, Otis Culbreath of Falls Church; and many other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Friday at noon at Peace Baptist Church, with the Rev. James E. Jefferies presiding. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Memorial Park in Annandale, Va. Inez Clark
MORGANTON — Mrs. Inez Propst Morrison Clark, 90, of Harry Drive, died quietly at her home Tuesday, May 28, 2002. Born July 8, 1911, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Emerson and Mary Costner Propst. She belonged to First Presbyterian Church in Morganton and retired from Broughton Hospital, where she served 27 years as a nurse. She graduated from Belwood High School and took her nurse’s training at Grace Hospital. She was past Deputy Grand Regent, Morganton Chapter No. 1382, of The Women of the Moose. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charlie Morrison; her second husband, Jay Clark; two brothers, Delmar Propst and Earl Propst; and a sister, Kathleen P. Reynolds. She is survived by a brother, Donald Propst of Skipwith, Va., a sister, Lois Propst of Morganton; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery, with Drs. Matthew Brown and Richard Morgan officiating. SHELBY — Mrs. Vangie Lee Haynes Nix, 88, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center. She was a loving sister, mother and grandmother who willingly gave so much of herself to the care of her family. She was a member of New Bethel Church of the Nazarene, a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and participated in the Jolly Elders Senior Organization. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Nix; her parents, Charlie T. and Mae Wilson Haynes; and two daughters, Mattie Sue Nix and Jo Anne Covil. She is survived by three brothers and a sister-in-law, Charles “June” Haynes of Shelby, Larry and Anne Haynes of Newport News, Va., and Maurice and Louise Haynes of Wilmington; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Evelyn and Luther Greene of Lawndale and Dorothy Sisk of Shelby; and a grandson and his wife, Randy and Arlene Nix of Charlotte. The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at New Bethel Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Bob Andress officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. SHELBY — Mr. Gordon Bernard “Red” Mitchem, 23, of 326 S. Martin St., died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Gaffney Upstate Medical Center. A native of Burlington, he was born Aug. 14, 1978, the son of Eldress Gertrude Mitchem of Shelby and Herbert Mitchem Jr. of Charlotte. He attended schools in Kings Mountain. He attended St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Grover. He was recently employed at a local nursing home facility in Gaffney, S.C. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Little Miss Chlor Nicole Lovelace of Gaffney; five sisters and a brother-in-law, Sabrina, Veronica, Sheila and Venisa Mitchem, all of Gaffney, and Eldress Lorretta and Robert Williams of Clarksville, Tenn.; a brother and a sister-in-law, Minister Wilbert Lee and Tonia Mitchem of Vale; a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins and his loving companion, Tina Lovelace. Sallie Causby
BOILING SPRINGS — Mrs. Sallie Leila Porter Causby, 104, of Crawley Memorial Hospital, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Crawley. Born May 13, 1898, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late joe and Eliza ann Barrett Porter. Her husband was the late Ed Ellis Causby. When asked why she thought she had lived so long, Mrs. Causby was always quick to answer, “I have lived my life for the Lord.” She will be greatly missed by her loved ones. She was a lifelong member of Buffalo Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Julius “Nesby” Causby; a daughter, Florene Causby; three grandchildren, Patsy Petty Lovelace and Ronald and Harvey Causby; a great-great-granddaughter, Shayla Moore; two daughters-in-law, Vernie Davis Causby and Annell Wright Causby; two sons-in-law, Lewis Henderson and John Petty; five brothers, Neal, Benjamin, Phil, Jim and Vernon Porter; and three sister, Vergie Porter Causby, Josephine Porter Hord and Emma Pearl Porter Hord. She is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Joe and Martha Causby and Sam and Eddie “Ray” Causby, all of Shelby; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Gertrude Causby Petty of Shelby, Emma Sue Causby Henderson of Kings Mountain, Margaret Causby and Lowell Lee and Wanda Causby and B.B. Lewis, all of Shelby; nine grandchildren, JoRene Causby Chandler of Florida, Robin Causby Bridges, Lisa Causby Hubbard, Sheila Lewis Davis, Kathy Lewis Phillips and Robert Alan Lewis, Larry Gene Causby, Geraldine Petty Transiskus, Judy Grigg Smith, all of Shelby; 26 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Buffalo Baptist Church with the Revs. Max Turner, Allen Davis and Danny Lewis officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
