SAN DIEGO — Mr. Pheo J. Peterson, 96, formerly of Kings Mountain, died Friday, June 7, 2002, in San Diego. He was preceded in death by a daughter and her husband, Frances and Frank Jackson; a grandson, Michael Jackson; a sister, Pearl Bolton; and seven brothers, Jesse, David, Coleman, Oland, the Rev. Clyde, James “Pete” and Roschel Peterson. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Johnson Peterson of the home; three daughters, Susan Peterson of Oceanside, Calif., Catherine Whitesides of Joliet, Ill., and Margie Palmer of Norcross, Ga.; four sons, William Peterson of Hendersonville, and Albert, Harold and Jerry Peterson, all of Hickory; and one sister, Ruth Owens of Gaffney, S.C. The funeral will be Monday in San Diego. Local announcement is made courtesy of Cleveland Funeral Services.

Betty Sue Willis
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Mrs. Betty Sue Hartsell Willis, 73, of Spartanburg, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Knoxville, Tenn., she was retired from Southern Bell with over 30 years of service and from Bank of America. She was a charter member of Morningside Baptist Church where she was a choir member, assisted with International Bible Studies, a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class, active in WMU as a member of the WMU Jackie Neely Mission Group, Mission Action Director of WMU, and a member of the Golden Tones Senior Choir. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Willis Jr.; and her parents, William and Audrey Roark Hartsell. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Debbie and Richard Michael of Sherrills Ford, Pam Baxley of Woodruff, and Linda Kay and Jim Johnson of Shelby; a son, William E. Willis III of Spartanburg; three sisters, Frances Hartsell Traynham of Spartanburg, Audrey Hartsell Rigsbee of Albemarle and Ann Hartsell of Pawleys Island, S.C.; four brothers, Bill Hartsell Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn., the Rev. Vaughn Earl Hartsell of Max Meadows, Va., Alex Hartsell of Abbeville, S.C. and Tim Hartsell of Inman; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Morningside Baptist Church with the Rev. Kirk H. Neely officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the church. Memorials may be made to Morningside Baptist Church Piano Fund, 897 South Pine St., Spartanburg, SC 29302. J.F. Floyd Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

ELLENBORO — Mr. Joe Louis Rivers, 61, of 177 Friendship Drivem died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Mountain Area Hospice Solace. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Webb First Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Moore officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour before services. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the services in the church. Thompson Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Fred Hudson
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Fred Dale Hudson, 87, of 213 Sweetbriar Drive, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. Born Aug. 3, 1914, in Lincoln County, he was a retired driver for Carolina Freight Carriers and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cherryville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Junie Gilbert Hudson; a son, Randy Dean Hudson; a daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Hudson; a granddaughter, Carla Craft; a brother, Leck Hudson; and a sister, Georgie Beam. He is survived by his wife, Alma Hollifield Hudson of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Connie Hudson of Frisco, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Scott Mauney of Cherryville; two sisters, Willie Mae Ballard of Lincolnton and Jessie Smith of Cherryville; six grandchildren, Reba Craft of Cherryville, Michael Mauney of Gastonia, Elaine Carlson of Greensboro, Todd Hudson of Knoxville, Tenn., Kathy Hodge of Lawndale and Robert Hudson of Shelby; and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter’s Funeral Home with the Revs. Billy Lowe and Jack H. Cooke officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Cherryville. The family will receive friends at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home, prior to the services, and other times at 1470 Requa Road, Cherryville. Memorials may be made to Carolina Care, in care of Activity Fund, 111 Harrelson Road, Cherryville, NC 28021.

Ormi Queen
SHELBY — Mrs. Ormi Lee White Queen, 87, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Shelby. She was preceded in death by her parents, Christopher Glenn White and Velda Sutro Hamrick White; her husband, John Edd Queen; and two sisters, Mrs. Vernon P. Crosby and Mrs. Ernest J. Mauney. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John Christopher and Nancy Wilson Queen of Monroe; a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Henry Boyd Blanton of Charlotte; and five grandchildren. A graveside service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Gene Watterson officiating. The family will receive friends two hours before the service at Lutz-Austell Funeral home.

FOREST CITY — Mr. Edward “Eddie” Hillman Randall, 46, of 149 Reid St. died Friday, June 7, 2002, at home. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Race Path Baptist Church with the Rev. John Godfrey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Harrelson Funeral Home.

Velma Skibo
SHELBY — Mrs. Velma Jean Herman Skibo, 68, of 105 Summit St., died Friday, June 7, 2002, at her home. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was a homemaker and member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she was an organist for 22 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Mary Grenesko Herman; a stepfather, Harlan Novicki; her husband, Richard William Skibo Sr.; a brother, Nickie Novicki; a sister, Peg Mock; and a granddaughter, Katheryn Siena Frye. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Rick and Michelle Skibo of Stanley and Ron Skibo of Grover; two daughters and sons-in-law, Julia and Steve Hoffman of the home; Mary and Greg Frye of Fallston; a daughter-in-law, Judy Skibo of Shelby; five brothers, Albert Herman of Pittsburgh, Ted Herman of Nome, Alaska, Bill Herman of Longview, Texas, Harry Novicki of Pittsburgh and John Novicki of Punxsutawney, Pa.; two sisters, Martha McKay and Pearl N. Thompson, both of Pittsburgh; and 13 grandchildren, Charlie and Amy Skibo, Cody and Carly Smith, Ryan and Chris Skibo, Lainey, Rebecca and Andrew Hoffman, Samantha, Sara, Hannah and Micah Elijah Frye. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Eric Houseknecht officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times at the home. A rosary will be held before visitation. DALLAS, N.C. — Mr. Everette Avery Aderholdt, 84, of 3302 Dallas High Shoals Road, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Cherryville with the Rev. Leroy Trexler officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Prudence Hughes, 85, of Paris Drive, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. She is survived by a daughter, Delores Young; a sister, Gary Bradley; a brother, Thomas Bradley; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest L. Simons officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church. J.W. Gill & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ELLENBORO — Mr. Joe Lewis Rivers, of 177 Friendship Drive, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Mountain Area Hospice in Asheville. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by The Thompson Brothers Funeral Home of Forest City.

OLANTA, S.C. — Mr. Johnny Martin, 68, of 140 Augusta St., formerly of Cherryville, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Carolinas Hospital in Florence, S.C. A memorial service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Buff officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, P.O. Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28053.

‘J.B.’ Godfrey
FOREST CITY — Mr. Charles “J.B.” Godfrey, 83, of 210 Reid St., died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital in Rutherfordton. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late James Henry Godfrey Sr. and Maybell Clontz Godfrey, a retired auto mechanic and served in the Army during World War II in General Patton’s 3rd Army. He was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Ricky Godfrey and Randy Dean Godfrey. He is survived by his wife, Betty McCurry Godfrey of the home; two sons, Charles Ricky Godfrey Jr. of Ellenboro and Mike Godfrey of Clarksville, Ga.; a daughter, Barbara J. Godfrey of Lodi, N.J.; three grandchildren; Stacy Godfrey Kale, Benjamin Godfrey, and Brian Godfrey; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Padgett & King Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Todd Gossett officiating. Interment will follow in the Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society; or to the Lymphoma Society.

‘Kathy’ Jeffries
HIGH POINT — Ms. Addie Kathryn “Kathy” Jeffries, 47, formerly of Henrietta, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at High Point Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of Addie Sue and the late Joseph Jeffries, member of New Zion Baptist Church in Henrietta and New Bethel Baptist Church in High Point. She served as a Radiological Technologist for 23 years and attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In addition to her mother, she is survived by a sister, Susan Paulette Jeffries of Henrietta; and two brothers, Thomas Hardin Jeffries of Fort Jackson, S.C. and William Michael Jeffries of Henrietta. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church in Henrietta with the Dr. L.W. Jackson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. Thompson Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Hunt
ELLENBORO — Mrs. Irene Allen Hunt, 91, of 234 Leon Road, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at White Oak Manor Nursing Center in Rutherfordton. She was a native of Cleveland County, the daughter of the late Charles Lester and Jessie Dover Allen. She was the widow of Webb M. Hunt Sr., a homemaker and member of Race Path Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons, Clarence Hunt of Ellenboro, Webb Hunt of Forest City and Bob Hunt of Ellenboro; one brother, Gene Allen of Shelby; four sisters, Mae Wesson of Shelby, Ruby Hamrick of Boiling Springs, Pauline Philbeck of Shelby and Mary Faye Bridges of Shelby; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Race Path Baptist Church with the Rev. John Godfrey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside and at other times at the home.

David Duckworth
MOORESBORO — Mr. David Wayne Duckworth, 30, of 324 Trinity Church Road, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Charlotte. Born March 21, 1972, in Tacoma, Wash., was employed by H & L Grading as a driver and served in the Army. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Harold E. Duckworth; and maternal great-grandmother, Ola Hamrick Blanton. He is survived by his parents, William W. Duckworth and Dianne L. Boyd Duckworth of the home; a brother, William A. Duckworth of Mooresboro; his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Duckworth of Spout Spring; his maternal grandparents, Don and Grace Boyd of Cliffside; and maternal great-grandfather, Kermit Blanton Sr., of Gastonia. A graveside service will be today at 2 p.m. in Sandy Run Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Don Allen officiating. No formal visitation but family will be at the home. Clay-Barnette Funeral is in charge of arrangements.

AKRON, Ohio — Ms. Ellen Spikes Cook, 88, of 286 Channel Wood Circle, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Saint Thomas Hospital in Akron. The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church in Akron with the Rev. John Mullins officiating. Burial will follow in Greene Lawns Cemetery.

FOREST CITY — Mrs. Pauline Noblitt Henson, 86, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Rutherfordton. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home with the Revs. Darrell Crawford and Jack Pennington officiating. Burial will be in Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Roland Leath
SHELBY — Rev. Roland Leath, 90, of 208 Worthington St., died Friday, March 31, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center. Born in Sagerton, Texas, he was the son of the late Harry Green and Pollye Martin Leath. He was minister of music, educational director, and associate pastor of First Baptist Church in Shelby, retiring in 1974, and after retirement he was interim minister for 16 churches in Cleveland County. He also served for a year as pastor of the Seoul International Baptist Church in Seoul, South Korea. He was a member of First Baptist Church, former member of Shelby Rotary, was a Mason and Shriner of Oasis Temple of Charlotte, attended Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan., graduated from University of Texas at Arlington, and attended Ft. Worth Conservatory of Music and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Before coming to First Baptist Church, he was Minister of Music/ Education/Associate Pastor in churches in Texas and Arkansas. He is survived by his wife, Lois Hall Leath; a son, Roland Marcus Leath, of Irvin, Calif.; two daughters, Suzanne L. Hamner and husband, Easley, of Cambridge, Mass., and Janet L. Martin, of Shelby; a brother, Dr. Paul Brooks Leath and wife, Maritia, of Houston, Texas; and grandchildren, Robin Martin, of Houston, Texas, Janine Hamner, of Los Angeles, Calif., Michael Hamner, of San Francisco, Calif., Julie Martin Dean and husband, Jason, of Charlotte. A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating. Ministers will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends after the service in the Ladies Parlor at the church and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 120 N. Lafayette St.; or to Roland and Lois Leath Scholarship, School of Divinity, Gardner-Webb University, P.O. Box 997, Boiling Springs, NC 28017. Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
