FOREST CITY — Mr. Robert Lloyd Wilkerson, 93, of 203 Forest St., died Monday, June 10, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church with Dr. E.M. Roberts officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Thompson Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Lessie Maddox
SHELBY — Mrs. Lessie Beasley Maddox, 90, formerly of 315 Atlantic Ave., died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. She was the daughter of the late Boyd and Mary Jett Beasley and a native of Hartsville, S.C. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Maddox Sr.; one sister, Jessie Pettigrew; and three brothers, Marion Beasley, Roland Beasley and Boyd Beasley Jr. Left to cherish fond memories are her children, four daughters, Joyce Smith and Louise Fowler, both of Los Angeles, and Joel Simmons and Lillian McCluney and husband, Raymond, all of Shelby; two sons, Joe Maddox Jr. of Shelby and Louis Maddox of Los Angeles; three sisters, Bertha Jennings of Washington, D.C., Edith Burson of Asheville and Mary Johnson of Kings Mountain; one brother, Joe Beasley of Grover; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Good Samaritan Fellowship Church with the Rev. R.E. Devoe officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church and at other times at the home of her son, Joe Maddox Jr., 917 Frederick St., Shelby. SHELBY — Mrs. Irene Brooks Ware, 84, of 104 Beaver Dam Drive, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. Born in Cleveland County, she was a retired hairdresser and member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and choir member. She was preceded in death by her parents, George E. and Aquilla Scruggs Brooks; her husband, David Clyma Ware; and six brothers, Floyd, Maynard, Palmer, Flay, Wilfred and Dean Brooks. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Diane Ware of Shelby and Stephen and Allyson Ware of Charlotte; three grandsons and their wives, Brian and June Ware, Gary and Missy Ware and Derek and Jennifer Ware, all of Shelby; two granddaughters, Sarah and Mary Kathryn Ware of Charlotte; two brothers and sisters-in-law, C.J. and JoAnn Brooks of Crawfordsville, Ind., and Dennis and JoAnn Brooks of Alta Vista, Va.; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Reba and George Tapy of Dallas, Gladys and Lewis Boroughs of Greensboro, Edith Hoffman of Shelby and Clara Lowe of Grover; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Pruitt and Dr. Paul Sorrells officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church and at other times at the home. ‘Bill’ Hovis
SHELBY — Dr. William Patrick “Bill” Hovis, 65, of 1425 E. Marion St., Sterling House of Shelby, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born July 27, 1936, in Gaston County, he was a son of the late Patrick and Beatrice Bumgardner Hovis. He retired from the United States government and was a Baptist. He was a graduate of Gardner-Webb College, University of Maryland with a master’s degree, Georgetown University with a Ph.D., 30 years with U.S. Government in Foreign Service, received two Presidential Citations from the U.S. State Department. He also served in the Army. He is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Scott and Donna Hovis, Duke and Cloe Hovis, Heath and Barbara Hovis, all of Shelby; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra and the Rev. Kenneth Hopkins of Burlington, Sally and Bill Brackett of Greensboro, Carol and Douglas MacArthur and Lynn Hovis and Earl Mace, all of Shelby. A memorial service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Hopkins officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Douglas MacArthur, 1410 Thea Drive in Shelby. ‘Annie’ Benjamin
SHELBY — Mrs. Annah “Annie” Lawrence Benjamin, 85, born Jan. 27, 1917, in Jones County, Ga., to the late Eli Sr. and Annah Lawrence. She departed this life on Sunday, June 9, 2002, at home. Annie Lawrence Benjamin was joined in holy wedlock to the late Moses Benjamin Sr. in 1936. To this union, nine children were born. She was a homemaker while raising her children as well as many “adopted” ones. Annie Lawrence Benjamin was a faithful member of Young’s Chapel Church of God, where she served as the “Mother” of the church, as well as in many other capacities until her illness. Annie Lawrence Benjamin had three children that preceded her in death, Annie Mae Benjamin, Elijah Benjamin Sr. and Sadie Lee Benjamin. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Lawrence and Eli Lawrence Jr.; five sisters, Ola Jackson, Mattie Jefferies, Bessie Lattimore, Eula Bell and Estelle Roberson. She leaves to mourn her children, Ada Matterson and spouse, Arthur, of Alexandria, Va., Albert Benjamin and spouse, Barbara, Gracie Benjamin and Moses Benjamin Jr., all of Shelby, Barbara Adams and spouse, Paul, of Gastonia, Carrie Adams and spouse, Kenneth, of Kings Mountain, Charles Benjamin of Centerville, Va.; and an adopted son, Willie Strong of Shelby. She also leaves to mourn, two sisters, Narciss McCrary of Washington, D.C., and Carrie Dixon of Shelby; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Roberts Tabernacle Christian Methodist Episcopal Church with Elder Albert Benjamin officiating. Burial will be in Webb Cemetery. MOORESBORO — Mrs. Betty Mae Wood Lail, 84, of 1100 High Shoals Road, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Fair Haven Nursing Center. SHELBY — Mr. Calvin Lester Starr, 49, of Century Care of Shelby, was born Oct. 17, 1952, in Cleveland County, the son of Sadie Roseboro Starr and the late Alexander Starr, he departed this life after a long illness on Sunday, June 9, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was a active member of the Hopewell Baptist Church, until his health declined. He leaves to cherish his loving memories his loving mother, Sadie Starr of Brooks Family Care Home in Kingstown; two brothers, Jerry A. Starr and his wife, Vibbie, of Hickory and James R. Starr of Maryland; one uncle, Lester Roseboro of Maple Grove; one aunt, Ella McCain of Shelby; one nephew, Patrick Hopper of Shelby; two nieces, Windy Hush and her husband, Raymond, and Roxanne Eskridge, both of Shelby; and a host of other relatives and friends. SHELBY — Mrs. Ormi Lee White Queen, 87, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. She was a daughter of the late Christopher Glenn White and Velda Sutro Hamrick White. She belonged to First Baptist Church in Shelby and was very active in the community for many years. She was a member of the local PEO chapter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Edd Queen; and two sisters, Mrs. Vernon P. Crosby and Mrs. Ernest J. Mauney. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John Christopher and Nancy Wilson Queen of Monroe; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Henry Boyd Blanton of Charlotte; and five grandchildren. A graveside funeral will be held today at 2 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery, with Dr. Gene Watterson officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Lutz-Austell Funeral home. SHELBY — Mrs. Meldonia Dec, 73, of 823 E. Marion St., No. 2, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at home. Born in Shelby, she was the daughter of Maude H. Davidson of Shelby, and the late James Clifton Gibson. She was resident manager of Hickory Creek Apartments in Shelby and formerly worked for Plaza Apartments in Hickory. She belonged to AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Max Dec. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Gloria and Glenn McMillen of Fort Pierce, Fla., Betty Valerio of Seneca Falls, N.Y., and Sharon and Laurin Walton of Wilson; a son and daughter-in-law, Macy Jr. and Theresia Paradise of Batavia, N.Y.; a brother, James R. Gibson of Tampa, Fla.; a stepson, Bernard Dec and his wife, Delores, of Auburn, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Mary Ann Marchewka and her husband, Don, of Leesburg, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A native of Cleveland County, she was a retired teacher’s assistant at Casar Elementary, and was a member of Casar Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Toy Henderson Melton and Ruby Pearl Canipe Melton. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Kenneth Roy Hamby, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenny and Lisa Hamby of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Kendra and Jeff Bradley of Casar; a special uncle, Jack Melton of Casar; a mother-in-law, Dora Hamby of Casar; and two granddaughters, Mackenzie Bradley and Kaitlin Hamby. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Casar Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Mauney officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
