Mr. Edward M. "Dump" O’Dear

Mr. Edward M. "Dump" O’Dear, 87, of Marion, died Saturday, June 19, 2004 at The McDowell Hospital.

Born Dec. 19, 1916 in McDowell County, he was a son of the late Roscoe O’Dear and Nishey Carver O’Dear. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, James Leon O’Dear and Rev. Harold O’Dear; four sisters, Beatrice O’Dear Crocker, Margie O’Dear Owensby, Maggie O’Dear Williams and Dorothy O’Dear Styles.

Mr. O’Dear is survived by three brothers, Arthur E. O’Dear and Samuel Franklin O’Dear, both of Marion, and Earnest O’Dear of Thomasville; one sister, Sylvia Tanner of Columbus, Ga. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. O’Dear will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Revs. Ray Stockton and Robert Harris officiating. Burial will be at the McDowell Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Kerstan “Sam” M. Slabchuck

Kerstan “Sam” M. Slabchuck, 44, of Marion, Died Saturday, December 11, 2004 at his residence. Born to Audrey Slabchuck of MI and the late Joseph Slabchuck, he served in the US Army from 1979-1984. In addition to his father he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Mark Slabchuck, Micheal Slabchuck & Melvin Blood.

Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Donna Parsons of Marion; one step-son, David Parsons of Shefield Lake, OH; one step-daughter, Marti Parsons of Elyria, OH; three step-grandchildren, Nathan Parsons, Sydney Rodin & Janelle Showalter; four sisters, Marchell Weld, Captain Martina, Lisa & Katrina Slabchuck all of MI; and four brothers, Jesse Slabchuck of NY, Marlin, Darren & Chris Slabchuck all of MI.

The family will receive friends 7:00PM-9:00PM, Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00AM, Thursday, December 16, 2004, at Kirksey Funeral Home.

Mr. Darrell Allen Radford

Mr. Darrell Allen Radford, 79, formerly of Glen Alpine, died September 28, 2003 at the Life Care Center in Banner Elk NC. Born August 31, 1924 in Caldwell he was the son of the late James H. Radford and Nellie Taylor Radford.

He is survived by a sister Evelyn R. Lipscomb, nephew Tracey W. Davis ; great nephew Alex O. Davis; great niece Kacey E. Davis all of Staunton Virginia and a niece Judy Pennell of High Point N.C.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at the Pincrest Cemetery in Granite Falls with the Reverend Jason Harvey officiating.

Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the Radford family with arrangements.

Mrs. Shirley Ward Lewis

Mrs. Shirley Ward Lewis, 83, of Flat Rock, formerly of Vein Mountain, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at the Elizabeth Hospice House, Hendersonville.

Born June 13, 1921 in McDowell County in the Bracketts Township, she was a daughter of the late Perry Campbell Ward and Virginia Sprouse Ward. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, John L. Lewis; a son, John Douglas Lewis; a sister, Verlan Ward King; and a brother, Hugh C. Ward. She was a member for many years of the Vein Mountain Baptist Church and a graduate of Glenwood High School.

She is survived by her daughters, Syble Lewis Freeman and Virginia Lewis Crosby; a son, Marvin C. Lewis; a sister, Bernice Ward Pope; three brothers, Perry B. Ward, Larry J. Gordon and Jerry C. Gordon; seven grandchildren, Cinthia Williams Matthews, Robert Williams Jr., Ronald Williams, John Williams, Dale Lewis, Jason Lewis and Heather Lewis; great-grandchildren, Michael Williams, Jenny Williams, Chad Williams, Beth Williams, Bruce Matthews and Sonja Matthews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2004 at the Vein Mountain Baptist Church with the Revs. Barry Gouge and Tom Sherwood officiating. Burial will follow at the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the services at the church.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Four Seasons Hospice, P.O. Box 2395, Hendersonville, N.C. 28793.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mr. Forrest “Ernest” Parker

Mr. Forrest “Ernest” Parker, 79, of Brandy Street in Morganton died Thursday December 16, 2004 at his residence. He was born May 25, 1925 in Belog N.C. to the late Revie Parker and Bonnie Randolph Parker. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sons Michael Parker and Forrest Lin Parker and a brother Roosevelt Randolph.

Mr. Parker had retired with twenty six years of services as a firefighter with the Arlington Virginia fire department and had retired from Morganton Dye and Finishing.

He was a veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by: his wife Katherine Parker of the home; son Mark Parker of Alexandria Virginia; brothers, Dover Randolph of Forest City, Ronald Parker of Old Fort; sister Irene Wyatt of Ellenboro ; two grandchildren Crystal Lynn Parker and Jeremy Parker ; brother in laws Joe Rector and Fred Rector and a sister in law Judy Woody.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday December 18, 2004 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton with the Reverend Tim McFatter officiating . Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services Saturday at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.

Mrs. Pearl Herman Hoyle

Mrs. Pearl Herman Hoyle, 86, of Pine Street, died Sunday, May 22, 2005 at Grace Hospital. She was born March 25, 1919 and was daughter of the late Freeman Philo Herman and Dolly McRary Herman.

She graduated from Hudson High School where she was class valedictorian and continued her education attending Grace Hospital School of Nursing. She earned her nursing degree in 1941 and worked for more than 11 years as a nursing supervisor at Broughton Hospital. She and her late husband Edwin Soloman Hoyle, owned and operated Crestview Nursing Home in Morganton and also owned and operated Pine Street Greenhouse.

She was a member of North Morganton United Methodist Church, and very active in the United Methodist Women. She held many church offices over the years.

She is survived by her children, Robert Edwin Hoyle and wife, Karen of Conover; William Charles Hoyle and wife Donna, of Morganton; Mary Frances Hoyle of Wasilla, Alaska; Linda H. McSwain and husband, Butch of Morganton; brothers, Buck Herman and John Herman both of Gamewell; sisters, Mae Blackburn of Salisbury and Mary Witherspoon of Hudson; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at1:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 25th at North Morganton United Methodist Church with Reverend John Woods presiding. Interment will follow the service at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday beginning at 11:30 A.M. in the church fellowship hall and at other times at the McSwain home on Pine Street.

Kirksey Funeral Home assisted the Hoyle family with arrangements.

Mr. Phillip Anthony Lalley

Mr. Phillip Anthony Lalley, 47, of Jackson Run Drive in Morganton, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at his residence. Born March 20, 1956 in Buncombe County he was the son of Joseph Michael Lalley of Asheville and the late Edith Feliu Lalley.

Mr. Lalley had been a resident of Western Carolina Center in Morganton and later had moved to the Expression Home.

In addition to his father he is survived by: brother Joseph M. Lalley III of Ithaca New York, sister Anne C. Lalley of Asheville, brother Robert S. Lalley of Silver Springs Maryland; four nieces and a nephew.

A funeral Mass will be held 11: 30 AM, Friday, May 9, 20003 at Saint Eugene Catholic Church in Asheville with Father Frank T. Cancro officiating. The family will receive friends following the services at the church.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 Saturday, May 10 at the Western Carolina Center Convent Chapel with the Reverend William Robinson officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the Convent Center.

Mary Magdalene “Maggie” Morris Kelly

Mary Magdalene “Maggie” Morris Kelly, age 94, of Parker Padgett Rd.., Old Fort, N.C., died Monday, October 6, 2003 at her residence.

Born in McDowell County to the late Charlie Morris and Verdia Cordell Morris Leonard, she was a retired employee of Parker Hosiery and a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Swannanoa.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph E. Kelly of Indiana and Thomas Earl Kelly of Spartanburg, S.C.; one daughter, Darlene Kelly Parker of Old Fort, N.C. 15 grandchildren;;24 great grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11:00 oclock Wednesday, October 8,2003 in the Old Fort Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home . Revs Milton Hollifield and Ray Holland will officiate with burial following in Sky View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home .

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mrs. Hettie Naruby Parks Rose

Mrs. Hettie Naruby Parks Rose, 90, of Old Fort, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at her residence.

Born Oct. 8, 1913 in Swain County, she was a daughter of the late Matt Parks and Malissie Watkins Parks. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Edd Rose; two sisters, two brothers, a granddaughter, a niece and a great-grandson.

She is survived by four sons, Clint Woody and wife, Bobbie, and Harold Rose and wife, Laura, all of Marion, James Rose and wife, Cleo, of Vancouver, Wash. and Clyde Rose and wife, Cheryl, of Randall, Wash.; four daughters, Barbara Cannon and husband, Steve, of Burnsville, Bernice Radford and her husband, the late Ronald Radford, Francis Morgan and her husband, the late Cecil Morgan, and Ethel Jenkins, all of Marion. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004 at the Salem Free Will Baptist Church with the Revs. Jerry McClain and Theodore Styles officiating. Interment will follow at the Salem Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 18, 2004 at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mrs. Ann Marie Epley

Mrs. Ann Marie Epley, 66, of Marion, died, Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at The McDowell Hospital. Born January 1, 1938 in Bloomfield, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Casper Abene and Gertrude Eleanor O’Connor Abene. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Epley was also preceded in death by her husband, James Crawford “Buddy” Epley and two brothers, Sonny & Jack Abene. Mrs. Epley was a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church where she was an active member of the Food Committee.

Mrs. Epley is survived by a son, Sonny Epley, of Rockwood, TN; a daughter, Gail Ellis and husband, Jack, of Marion; two grandchildren, Alex & Daniel Ellis, both of Marion.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Epley will be held 2:30PM, Friday, December 17, 2004, at the Zion Hill Baptist Church with the Reverends Tom Walker & Leo Kuykendall officiating. The family will receive friends 1:00PM-2:30PM, prior to the Services in the Church Sanctuary. Interment will follow at the Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.
