Juanita Burns
SHELBY — Mrs. Juanita P. Burns, 83, of 159 Quail Hollow Drive died Friday evening, June 14, 2002, at her home in Shelby. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Queens College, her master of arts from Columbia University, her principal’s and supervisor’s certificate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her counseling certificate from the University of Georgia. Her work experience reflected her commitment to education and to her community. She retired in 1983 as assistant superintendent of Shelby City Schools and most recently had served as a licensed psychological examiner for the school. During her career she taught grades 4 through 8, served as an elementary school principal, worked as a junior high school guidance counselor and was director of special services for the Shelby City Schools. She was instrumental in the development of a countywide program for children with significant physical and mental disabilities, which is now the program at North Shelby School. She started the first program in North Carolina for children with learning disabilities and she shared her interest in international travel by starting an educational travel program for high school students. She was honored in Who’s Who in American Education. Her interests and contributions to the community were numerous and varied. She served on boards of Cleveland Community College, Cleveland Mental Health and Hospice of Cleveland County. She was also a trustee and a contributor to Cleveland Regional Medical Center and a Friend of the Library. A member of First Baptist Church, she taught Sunday school for many years and served as chairperson of the committee to establish a childcare center at the church. She has served as a president of the Shelby unit of the NCAE, president of the Shelby Junior Charity League, president of AAUW and president of the Contemporary Book Club. Over the years she was also active as a Girl Scout leader and a member of the Novice Bridge Club. Her commitment to her community was matched by her devotion to her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert O. Burns; her parents, Carl Putnam and Lula Hord Putnam; and her sister, Lavonne P. Garner. Her family includes a son, Robert O. Burns Jr. of Hawaii; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Burns and Jack Wexler of Charlotte; a sister, Margaret P. Goodman of Shelby; a grandson, Zack Green of Raleigh; a niece and her husband, Jo Goodman and Gaylord Bralley and their two children, Meg and Becca, all of Shelby; a nephew and his wife, William S. and Annette Garner and their daughter, Katie, all of Chicago; a nephew and his wife, Michael C. and Joan Garner and their two children, Callie and Michael, all of Chicago. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Shelby on Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Tony Tench and Dr. Robert Canoy officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, Cleveland County Memorial Library, Cleveland Community College or North Shelby School. Lutz-Austell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edith Warlick
ELLENBORO — Mrs. Edith Perry Warlick, 78, of 1540 Walls Church Road, died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at White Oak Manor of Rutherfordton. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Cleveland Funeral Services. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday night from 6:30 to 8 at the funeral home.

Alsie Scism
SHELBY — Mrs. Alsie Scism, 87, of White Oak Manor, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at her home. A native of Cleveland County, she was a retired textile worker. She was a member of First Wesleyan Church of Shelby. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Lankford and Lizzie Moss Lankford; her husband, Charles Scism; a daughter, Jo Ann Lane; a granddaughter, Kathy Jane Ingle; and nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by a daughter, Muriel Denton of Grover; a sister, Lillian Putnam of Shelby; four grandchildren and their spouses, Larry and Pam Denton, Eddie and Debbie Denton, Teresa and Gary Queen and Barry Denton; 12 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be today at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Rev. Cecil Buff officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family received friends Saturday at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home of Muriel Denton, 1246 Lavender Road in Grover. CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Mamie Mildred Barlow Peeler, 85, of 1010 Ranbar Drive, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at Carolina Care Center. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Kelly R. Jones and R. Keith Love officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemtery. The family will receive friends today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Carpenters Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 601 N. Pink St., Cherryville, NC 28021; or to Hospice of Gaston County, P.O. Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28053.

Dorothy Edwards
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Noell Edwards, 75, of 405 Belvedere Circle, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at her home. A native of Roanoke, Va., she was born to Samuel and Etta Arrington Noell. She was retired from Gaston Skills Inc., where she worked as an instructor. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Kings Mountain and she was also a member of Ada Chapter No. 7, OES, Queen Mary No. 5 HOJ and Elon No. DOI. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Raymond Edwards. She is survived by five sons, Raymond E. Edwards of Clemmons, Garland W. Edwards and Cedric Ivan Edwards, both of Kings Mountain, Darryl E. Edwards of Killeen, Texas, and Scottie L. Edwards of Gastonia; three daughters, Denise L. Hunt of Kings Mountain, Karen C. Edwards of Shelby and Shavon D. Edwards of Greenville, Tenn.; two brothers, Thomas Noell of Roanoke, Va., and Ralph Noell of Norfolk, Va.; 24 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The funeral will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Clinton A. Feemster officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. Withrow’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MOORESBORO — Mr. Charlie Glenn Bridges, 81, died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital, Rutherfordton. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Race Path Baptist Church with the Rev. John Godfrey officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen, and at other times at the home of his daughter, Glenda Scruggs , 870 Morrow Motor Road, Forest City.

Harold Nalley
SHELBY — Mr. Harold Junior Nalley, 64, of 400 Bear Creek Road, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. Born in Jefferson County, Ga., he was a son of the late Ernest and Eula Parr Nalley. He was employed by STI Kings Plush as a loom fixer/technician. He was a member of Morris Memorial Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Nalley. He is survived by his wife, Mary Keeter Nalley of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James A. Nalley and Tony and Sonya Nalley, all of Shelby; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charlie and Lois Nalley of Shelby and Randolph and Gloria Nalley of Lattimore; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Martha Whaley, Martha and Donald Sparks and Geraldine and Robert Ford, all of Shelby; and three grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Morris Memorial Baptist Church in Casar with the Revs. Tim Trexler, Tommy Cook and Chris Emory officiating. Marvin Whisnant
BOONVILLE, Ind. — Rev. Marvin Whisnant, 75, of 1777 Country Road, formerly of Shelby, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at his home. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Gary Marvin and Sarah P. McSwain Whisnant. He was a retired Baptist minister; pastored in Clarkville and Warsaw, Va., Marion and Nanjemoy, Md., Boonville, Ind., Casar, Kings Mountain and Shelby. He was a member of Double Springs Baptist Church, former assistant Sunday School teacher, Men’s chorus, and Chaplain for senior citizens at Double Springs. He graduated from Gardner-Webb University, Carson-Newman College, and Southeastern Seminary at Wake Forest and attended Gateway Baptist Church in Newburgh, Ind. He served in the Navy during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Grady, Boyce, and Calvin Whisnant. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth McSwain Whisnant of the home; three sons, Michael Whisnant and wife, Betty, of Easley, S.C., Rev. Mitchell Whisnant and wife, Vickie, of Kingsport, Tenn., Rev. Nathan Whisnant and wife, Tammy, of Henderson, Ky.; two daughters, Patricia Whisnant of Fort Worth, Texas and Helen W. Fisher of Boonville, Ind.; a brother, J.E. Whisnant of Asheboro; a sister, Beatrice Blanton of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Ann Whisnant of Eureka, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, David, Jonathan, Matthew, Christopher, Cassie, and Clara Whisnant, Allen and Daniel Delano, Katie and Beth Fisher; and four great-grandchildren, Evan and Brandon Whisnant, Emily and Tyler Delano. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Double Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Mitchell Whisnant and Nathan Whisnant officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Cecil M. BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mr. Eugene Mullinax, 67, of 1453 Blacksburg Highway, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at home. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Buffalo Baptist Church with the Rev. Marshall Foster officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at White Columns-Blacksburg Funeral Service and at other times at the home. RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Charles Edward Logan, 79, of A8 157 Butler St., died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Crowe’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the funeral home.

Douglas Sherwood
LAKE LURE — Mr. Douglas Ronald Sherwood, 43, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at Lake Lure. A memorial service will be today at 3 p.m. at Fairfield Mountains Chapel with the Revs. Everette Chapman and Lee Fix officiating. The family will receive friends following services in the chapel. Luesenior Laughlin
LAWNDALE — Mrs. Luesenior Champion Laughlin, 84, of 206 East Main St., died Thursday, June 13, 2002, at home. Born Jan. 19, 1918, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Grayson Edgar and Martha Doan Jones Champion. She retired from Cleveland Mills and Fiber Industries. She was a member of Lawndale United Methodist Church and member of the choir for many years. She was a devoted wife and loving mother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Lee R. Champion, Furman “Hernie” Champion, Plato Champion, Grover “Nick” Champion, Jethro Champion and Edgar Champion; two sisters, Essie Clark and Selma White; and a son-in-law, M.A. Fortenbury. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, James Thomas “J.T.” Laughlin of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, Farrell and Betty Laughlin of Lawndale, Ronnie Laughlin of Fallston, Terry and Pam Laughlin of Cherryville and Freddie and Celeste Laughlin of Shelby; four daughters and sons-in-law, Martha Fortenbury of Fallston, Brenda and Steve Garver of Clover, S.C., Trena and Gary Whitaker of Shelby and Tresa Hovis of Gastonia; two sisters, Pearl Newton of Ellenboro and Kate Sealey of Oak Island; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at noon at Lawndale United Methodist Church with the Revs. David Reep and Guy Godfrey officiating. The body will be placed in the church two hours before the service. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11:30 a.m. before the service at the church. CHARLOTTE — Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Harrill, formerly of Belmont and Bostic, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Padgett & King Mortuary Chapel with the Revs. John DePriest Harrill and Wilson Porter Rhoton officiating. Burial will be in Concord Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the chapel. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mr. Virgil Romeo Bostic, 88, of 762 Brickhouse Road, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, at home. A graveside service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Trinity Baptist Church Cemetery in Mooresboro with the Rev. Scott Coggins officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at White Columns-Gaffney Funeral Service and at other times at the home of his son, 141 Forest Hills Drive in Gaffney. SHELBY — Ms. Estelle Proctor Allen-Feaster, 66, of 605 Oakley St., died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Genesis Chapel with Bishop Zavier H. Terrill Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Webb Memorial Lawns.

Addie Jeffries
HENRIETTA — Mrs. Addie Sue Jeffries, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Autumn Care Nursing Home. A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Lincoln Dewberry and Catherine Logan. The late Smiley and Alice L. Wilkins reared her as a daughter after her mother’s early death. She was educated at the Old New Hope School and was a member of New Zion Baptist Church. She worked for many years as a housekeeper with the Cargill, the Clayton and Haynes families. She continued her work for more years at Tanners as a sewing machine operator. She then retired from Cone Mills (Haynes Plant) as a cloth inspector. Her husband, Joseph H. Jeffries, and daughter, Addie Kathryn Jeffries, preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons, Thomas Hardin Jeffries of Fort Jackson, S.C., and William Michael Jefferies of the home; one daughter, Susan P. Jeffries of the home; five brothers, Jack Dewberry, John Lee Dewberry, Joe Nathan Dewberry, Gaither Dewberry, all of Henrietta, and Doug Dewberry; five sisters, Burleen D. McAdoo, Margaret D. Conley, Peggy D. Watkins, Ethel D. Washburn, all of Henrietta, and Dolly M. Myers; one sister-in-law, Hazel J. Sims of Henrietta. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. L.W. Jackson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Thompson Brothers Funeral Home of Forest City.

Ellen Cook
AKRON, Ohio — Ms. Ellen Spikes Cook, 88, went to be with the Lord June 5, 2002, at Saint Thomas Hospital. Born in Geneva, Ala., she had been a resident of Akron for more than 60 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Cook Sr., and a son, Rudolph Cook. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Floyd Jr. and Suna Cook of Missouri, Carl Edward of Los Angeles; and a daughter, Sharon C. Martin of Shelby. The funeral was Monday at Providence Baptist Church, 458 Madison Ave., Akron, OH 44320 with the Rev. Dock Chenault Jr. officiating and the Rev. Willie Mullins giving the eulogy. Cards/condolences may be sent to Minister/Council-Woman, Sharon C. Martin, 1824 Quail Run Drive, Shelby, NC 28150. Genesis Funeral Service is in charge of local arrangements.

Estelle Allen-Feaster
SHELBY — Ms. Estelle Proctor Allen-Fester, 66, of 605 Oakley St., died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. She was born May 15, 1936, the daughter of the late Roosevelt and Maybelle Proctor, in Chesnee, S.C. She was a member of Abundant Life Fellowship Church, where Bishop Derrick Freeman is the pastor. She is also a chartered member of New Jerusalem Rebirth and Restoration Ministries, both of Shelby. She was preceded in death by a sister, Vernie Johnson; two brothers, Arthur William Proctor and Roosevelt Proctor Jr.; and a very special son-in-law, Deacon Terrence Petty. She is survived by eight daughters, Ruby Jean Proctor of Boston, Elsie Webber, Rose Jefferies, Brenda Coleman, Cathy Robbs, Sarah Allen-Hopper, Patricia Ann Allen and Evan Margie Allen-Petty, all of Shelby; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jackie and Tina Allen of Morganton and Ron and Rhonda Allen of Charlotte; five sisters, Vennie Ross, Dora Ross, Lorraine Robinson, Julie Mae Allen and Paulette Ross, all of Shelby; two brothers, Wade Edward Proctor of Boston and J.W. Proctor of Newark, N.J.; a special friend, Louis Cannon; and a special aunt, Florence Hayes; 34 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, all of Shelby; a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends. She reared Sharon Allen, Jerry Moore, Connie Webber, Angie Camp, Travis Parks, Percy Ross Jr. and Courtney Allen in the home. A graveside service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Webb Memorial Lawns with Bishop Zavier H. Terrill Sr. officiating. Genesis Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
