SHELBY — Mrs. Margaret Hester Byers Humphries, 85, of Century Care of Shelby, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Century Care in Shelby. Born July 29, 1916, in Cleveland County, she was a homemaker and member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Humphries; her parents, Hackett L. Byers and Eva Randall Byers; a brother, Neil Palmer Byers; and a sister, Edith Byers. She is survived by a brother, Seth H. Byers and wife, Selma, of Shelby; three nephews, Ronnie Neil Byers and Michael Kent Byers, both of Durham, and Steve Randall Byers of Shelby; a great-nephew, Chris Byers of Durham; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Byers. A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Cleveland Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill Pheagin officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in Cleveland Memorial Park. GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mrs. Lottie Conley Wray, 83, of 108 Carver St., formerly of 618 Lineberger St., Shelby, widow of the late Robert Lee Wray, died Friday morning, June 15, 2002, at 12:29 a.m. at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Phifer Conley and Sally Borders Conley, she was a native of Cherokee County, S.C. She was a member of Mikes Creek Baptist Church. She was a retired employee of Beams Nursing Home of Shelby. She is survived by four sons, J.V. Conley of Gaffney, Bobby Dean Wray of Jacksonville, Walter Lee Wray of Ernul and Robert Lewis Wray of Shelby; two daughters, Shirley McConnell of the home and Shelia Green of Silver Spring, Md.; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Mikes Creek Baptist Church in Gaffney with Dr. S.M. Johnson officiating. She will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Foster Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Harold Jack Sipe, 79, of 204 Harrelson Road, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 2, 1922, in Gaston County, a son of the late Charlie Lee and Carrie Carpenter Sipe. Mr. Sipe retired as owner and operator of Peoples Cleaner, Cherryville, was a member of the Community Pentecostal Holiness Church, Stanley, a veteran of the Army in the 29th Division during World War II. He received the Purple Heart for injuries received in Germany. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margarie Ballard Sipe; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Brenda Sipe of Kings Mountain; two grandchildren, Carrie Sipe Edwards and her husband, Gordon, of Chapel Hill and Casey Blair Sipe of Cherryville; a brother, Maurice Sipe of Los Angeles, and a sister, Betty Ruth Cornwell and her husband, Charles, of Cherryville. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in City Memorial Cemetery, with the Revs. Eddie McGinnis and Raymond Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 before the service and at other times at the home of Larry and Brenda Sipe, 135 Muirfield Drive, Woodbridge North, Kings Mountain. SHELBY — Mrs. Alsie Scism, 87, of White Oak Manor, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at her home. A native of Cleveland County, she was a retired textile worker. She was a member of First Wesleyan Church of Shelby. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Lankford and Lizzie Moss Lankford; her husband, Charles Scism; a daughter, Jo Ann Lane; a granddaughter, Kathy Jane Ingle; and nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by a daughter, Muriel Denton of Grover; a sister, Lillian Putnam of Shelby; four grandchildren and their spouses, Larry and Pam Denton, Eddie and Debbie Denton, Teresa and Gary Queen and Barry Denton; 12 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral was held Sunday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, with the Rev. Cecil Buff officiating. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery. SHELBY — Mr. Henry Norris Brooks, 81, of 204 Poplar Springs Church Road, died Monday, June 17, 2002, at home. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late E. Coleman and Bessie Callahan Brooks. He retired from Dover Textiles. He was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and served in the Army during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Wilson. He is survived by his wife, Janice Whisnant Brooks of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Winfred Carpenter of Shelby and Sherry and Joey Gantt of Boiling Springs; three sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Marjorie Brooks of Lafayette, La., Ted and Kristie Brooks of Leesburg, Ga., and Danny and Kim Brooks of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Edna Lee and Marjorie Roberson, both of Shelby; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Phil Hughes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. BOILING SPRINGS — Mrs. Janie Hunt, 67, of 111 Woodland Ave., died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late John Ken and Adilee Edwards Hawkins. She was a homemaker and member of Liberty Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Christine Hawkins; and a grandson, James Buren Beatty. She is survived by her husband, James Buren Hunt of the home; three daughters and a son-in-law, Sarah and Catherine Hunt of the home and Patricia and Darrell Hamrick of Kings Mountain; five grandchildren, Janice Pearson, Crystal Beatty, Sandy Hamrick, Jonathan Hamrick and Dana Martin; a great-grandson, Brandon Beatty; two sisters, Jean Shehan and Frances Boone; and five brothers, Glenn, Chip, Ray, Willie and Boyd Hawkins. SHELBY — Mr. Hubert Lee Pearson, 81, of Britthaven in Charlotte, formerly of Gastonia and Shelby, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Britthaven in Charlotte. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Summie and Macy Dixon Pearson. He retired from National Linen Service as a salesman and a plant manager. He also was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service while living in Shelby. He was a member of Shelby New Bethel Church of the Nazarene and former member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Lowell. He served in the Marines in the 2nd Division and Pacific Theater during World War II. He moved to Gastonia in 1957. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Rosa Lee Howell Pearson; two brothers, Elbert and Harvey Pearson; and two sisters, Dorothy P. Grubbs and Juanita P. Payne. He is survived by a son, Derrell Lee Pearson and wife, Susan, of Shelby; a daughter, Gwen Falls and husband, Albert, of Shelby; a brother, Arnold Pearson and wife, Sue, of Shelby; a sister, Hilda Jean Whaley of Shelby; five grandchildren, Subetha Lancaster and husband, Chris, of Spartanburg, S.C.; Wendy Richards and husband, James, of Durham, Kevin Pearson of Missoula, Mont., Wesley Philbeck and wife, Megan of Annapolis, Md., and Drew Philbeck of Tallahassee, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Martha Lee Lancaster of Spartanburg and Thomas Philbeck of Annapolis; and aunt and uncle, Bertha and Joe Sosebee of Shelby. Born in Cleveland County, he was employed by the maintenance department of the city of Shelby. He was a member of Polkville Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Hugh Greene; and succeeded in death by his wife, Kathy Elizabeth Green Greene. He is survived by his mother, Virginia McKee Greene Sigmon of Polkville; a son, Jacob Matthew Greene of the home; a daughter, Susan Amanda Greene of the home; a brother, Thomas Marshall Greene and wife, Brenda, of Shelby; and a sister, Christine McNeilly and husband, Maynard, of Polkville. MORGANTON — Mrs. Dessie Crotts Canipe Duckworth, 83, of US 70 E., died Monday, June 17, 2002, following a brief illness. Born in Cleveland County on March 9, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Claudis and Hattie Cook Crotts. She retired from Western Carolina Center and was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. She was an active member of the Women’s Missionary Group, the Adult Sanctuary Choir and the Lydia Sunday School Class. Dessie lived life to the fullest, participating in the community and in her church. She was loved and will be missed by many. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Duckworth; by her first husband, Walter Canipe; and by three brothers, Russell, Raymond and Clyde Crotts. She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Claudia and Marcelo Lamar of Morganton; a son and his wife, Gary and Josephine Duckworth of Denton; two brothers, Ralph Crotts of Morganton and Wayne Crotts of Belwood; and a grandson, Justin Lamar. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Hazel Warlick Sr. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis Warlick Smith and Ike Smith of Charlotte; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dean and Marguerite Warlick of Hixson, Tenn., Kenneth Warlick of Lexington, Ken., and Arthur Jr. and Teresa Warlick of Boiling Springs; two grandchildren, Jennifer Warlick and Bryan Powell; and two brothers, Dwight Perry and William Perry Jr. of Double Shoals.
