Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army Church with the Revs. Stan Colbert and Calvin Hall officiating. Burial will be in Cherokee Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at White Columns Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 407 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, SC 29340.

Matilda Jeter
SHELBY — Mrs. Matilda Emmaline Surratt Jeter, 81, of 912 Fredrick St., died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was a seamstress and was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir, taught Sunday school and served on the Kitchen Committee. She was preceded in death by her parents Kelly and Hattie Ross Surratt; her husband, Reger Jeter; a brother, Z.K. Surratt; and a sister and brother-in-law, Alice S. and Bill Wilson. She is survived by a son, Geary Jeter of Shelby; and three sisters, Lola Mae Eskridge, Clara Surratt and Daisy Mae Hall, all of Shelby. The funeral will be Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Roseboro officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends half an hour before the service at the church. Arrangements were made by Dockery’s Home of Funerals.

LAWNDALE — Mr. David Ezra “Pop” Wease, 86, of 107 Elam St., died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at White Oak Manor, Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, he was born March 20, 1916, the son of Ezra Gold and Myrtle Mae Ledwell Wease. He was a retired doffer in the spinning room of Cleveland Mills and PPG Industries. He was a member of Lawndale United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard M. Wease, Ben F. Wease and Edward Wease and two sisters, Lois Waters and Shirley Brown. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maggie Lou Clay Wease of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry F. and Patsy Wease of Grover and Farrell and Linda Wease of Swainsville; a brother, Tommy Wease of Lawndale; two sisters, Mary Sue Champion and Adelle Eaker, both of Lawndale; a granddaughter, Laura Wease; five step-grandchildren, Anita Cash, Dale Ledford Sr., Mark White, Steve White and Rick White; seven step-great-grandchildren, Steven, Blake and Kristi White, Brandon and Tyler Hoffman and Kyle Cash and Dale Ledford Jr. A memorial service will be held tonight at 6 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Reep officiating. The burial will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Rose Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Dr., Shelby, NC 28150 or Lawndale United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 548, Lawndale, NC 28090 or the donor’s choice.

BESSEMER CITY — Mrs. Leila Jane Hensley, 78, died Saturday, June 22, 2002. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Myrtle United Methodist Church in Gastonia with the Rev. Alice Day officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Gardens on Edgewood Road. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home in Bessemer City.

SHELBY — Ms. Lois Hamrick Alexander, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby. Funeral arrangements will be announced by McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside. The family will be at the home of Aaron Alexander, 112 Aaron Drive, Boiling Springs.

SHELBY — Mrs. Margaret Russ Williams Peeler, 75, of W. Zion Church Road, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was born May 18, 1927, the daughter of the late Silas and Florence Sisk Russ. She was retired from Pisgah Elmore and formerly employed at Belding Lily. She was a member of Shelby Missionary Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Ted R. Williams II and Mills and Alex Peeler; a son, Flay Buren Williams and two sisters, Kathleen R. Sisk. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Kenneth Walker of Shelby; a granddaughter and her husband, Jackie and Donnie Peeler of Lawndale; a grandson, Bryan Walker of Shelby; two great-grandchildren, Jessie Peeler and Trey Peeler of Lawndale and a niece, Essie Mae Davis of Shelby. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Shelby Missionary Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Knicely officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the St. Paul United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and other times at the home of the daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Kenneth Walker of 1217 W. Zion Church Road, Shelby.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Benjamin Michael McDaniel, 19, of 608 Hillside Drive, died Friday, June 21, 2002. A native of Gaston County, he was the grandson of the late H.D. “Snooks” McDaniel and the late A.J. Haselden. He was a student at the Art Institute of Charlotte. He is survived by his parents, Michael David and Heidi Haselden McDaniel of Kings Mountain; a brother, Adam McDaniel; three sisters, Heidi Ann McDaniel, Mary McDaniel and Katie McDaniel all of Kings Mountain; grandmothers, Margie McDaniel Yancey and Anne Haseldon Mattox; uncles and aunts, Susan and John Fencer, Anne and Jerry Giarla, Mark McDaniel, Ms. Nancy Haselden and Peter Haselden; cousins, Danny Hatch, Peter Fencer, Chris Fencer, Elizabeth Hatch, Johnny Fencer, Kathleen Giarla, Justin Smith and Raven and Bailey McDaniel. A memorial service will be held today at 3 p.m. at the home with the Revs. Janice Combs and Frank Herman officiating. Memorials may be made to the Murdoch Center, P.O. Box 300, Butner, NC 27509. Harris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SHELBY — Mrs. Lois Hamrick Alexander, 78, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby. She was a native of Cleveland County, a daughter of the late Aaron Bonner and Encie Jolley Hamrick. She was a registered nurse and a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lane and Hope Alexander of Kings Mountain and Aaron and Shirley Alexander of Boiling Springs; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Robert Packard of Laurens, S.C.; a sister, Mabel Padgett of Mooresboro; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Qualls and Larry Hicks officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 1028 Steel Bridge Road, Mooresboro, NC 28114; or to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Roger Conner, 56, of 111 Dover Avenue, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

HAL PLONK
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Hal Sloan Plonk, 91, of 911 Crescent Circle, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was a native of Cleveland County, the fourth child of 10 children born to the late Clarence Sloan and Ellen Patterson Plonk. He was a charter member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, where he was an active leader holding many positions in the church. He was a retired Real Estate developer, the first Real Estate developer in Kings Mountain. He developed Crescent Hill, Ashley Park and Ashbrook Park. He was a former member and president of the Lions Club. He was a member of the Realtor’s Association, a NC State Alumnus and member of the Wolfpack Club. He retired from the Air Force as Lt. Col., and served during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth U. Plonk of Kings Mountain; four daughters, Joyce P. Forrest and husband, James, of Lexington, Ky., Marian P. Clagett and husband, Don, Franklin, Tenn., Kathryn P. Goforth and husband, Tom, of Kings Mountain, and Sharon P. Hudson and husband, Jim, of Shelby; three brothers, Dr. George Plonk, Zeb Plonk and John B. Plonk, all of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Margaret Plonk Isley of Burlington and Clara Plonk Politis of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and six grandchildren, Adrienne Clagett, Brad Forrest and wife, Stacy, Greg Forrest, Tee Gee Goforth, Sloan Goforth and Allan Hudson. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ken Gillikin officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Resurrection Lutheran Church, 600 Crescent Circle, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

JAMES KENNEDY
BOYDS, Md. — Dr. James Steven Kennedy, 59, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002. He was the husband of Myra Propst, formerly of Shelby, son of Laura Humphries Kennedy also of Shelby and the late John Kennedy. A memorial service and burial will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Cleveland Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Marvin Goble officiating. All friends are welcome. Hilton Funeral Home of Barnesville, Md., is in charge of arrangements.

CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Ruby Marie Benfield, 85, of 8325 Pinefield Court, Charlotte, formerly of Cherryville, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Harris Hospice Center, Presbyterian Hospital. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Key, Carroll Moffitt and Kenneth Gibson officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the family plot in City Memorial Cemetery. LAWNDALE — Mrs. Beulah Clayton Hunt White, 85, of Oak Grove Clover Hill Church Road, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Hospice of Wendover. A native of Cleveland County, she was born Jan. 5, 1917, the daughter of the late Edgar “Ed” and Leona H. Hunt. She was retired from Breedon’s Poultry in Morganton and a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Andrew White and a son, Gerald K. White. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Shannon L. and Ruby Shytle White of Polkville; a daughter-in-law, Ailene Turner White of Lawndale; two brothers, James Hunt of Shelby and Hoyt Hunt of Hickory; a sister, Marie Hunt Gold of Lattimore; three grandchildren, Gary Allen White, Lisa White Leonhardt and Patti White Bivins and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove United Methodist Church with the Revs. Alton Martin and David Reep officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. SHELBY — Ms. Mary Elizabeth Goins, 62, of 2410 Old Gaffney Road, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born July 31, 1939, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Carl Randolph and Margaret Spurling Goins. She was employed by Century Care of Cherryville as a certified nurse assistant. She attended Trinity Pentecostal Holiness Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert Eugene Ellis; and a granddaughter, Sharon Elizabeth Ellis. She is survived by four sons, Rocky Goins and Ricky Ellis, both of Shelby, Randy Ellis of Charleston, S.C., and Ronnie Ellis of Kings Mountain; a daughter, Rena Seirer of Shelby; three brothers, Steve Goins, Wayne Goins, Larry Goins, all of Shelby; three sisters, Patricia Goins, Linda Tesseneer, Brenda Henson, all of Shelby; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Jerry Grigg officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church and at other times at the home of her son, Ronnie Ellis, 4908 Barrett Road in Kings Mountain. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clay-Barnette Funeral Home to help pay with funeral expenses, care of Goins Service, 1401 West Dixon Blvd., Shelby, NC 28152.
