GASTONIA — Mrs. Sally Price Hambidge, 71, of 1532 Rice Hope Court, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at her home. She was a native of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, daughter of the late Manley R. and Nanette Kess Price. She was a member of the Gaston County Republican Women, Christian Science Reading Group and a volunteer with Gaston Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Richard H. Hambidge of the home; Peter Hambidge of Charlotte; Todd Hambidge of Raleigh; Matthew Hambidge and wife, Bess, of Shelby; and four grandchildren, Deyman Hambidge, Andrew Hambidge, Liliana Hambidge and Kosta Hambidge. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Home. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Ruby Paysour Craig, 87, of 7642 Dallas-Cherryville Highway, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia. SHELBY — Mrs. Grace Borders Wright, 86, of 1505 Kings Road, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at White Oak Manor. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late John Logan and Mindy Runyans Borders. She was a homemaker and graduate of Number Three High School. She was a very active member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher. After retirement, she was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, the Keenager Choir and Mary Bible Class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cledith Wright; a stepdaughter, Ruth Padgett; two brothers, John and Wilson Borders; a sister, Sue Agnes Borders; and a nephew, Ted Borders. She is survived by a sister, Edna Borders Sparks of Gaffney, S.C.; a brother, Craig Borders of Shelby; a niece, Nancy Borders of Shelby; two half-sisters, Florence B. Bryant of Charlotte and Lona B. Allen of Shelby; and a stepson, W.T. Wright of Shelby. A graveside service will be today at 11 a.m. in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Fred Mauney officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery. ‘Dickie’ Tate
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Dexter “Dickie” Earl Tate, 90, a resident of White Oak Manor, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at home. He was a native of Cleveland County, a son of the late Thomas C. and Edith Campbell Tate. He was a retired salesman for Warren Gardner and Gentlemen Clothiers, both of Gastonia. He was a member of First Baptist Church, past master of Fairview Masonic Lodge, where he was a member for more than 50 years. He also served in the Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin Tate, Wayne C. Tate and Foyd Tate; and three sisters, Margie Gantt, Mary Ella Dale and Ethel Allen. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Styers Tate of Kings Mountain; a brother, Thomas A. Tate and wife, Janet, of Kings Mountain; and by a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Mountain Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Morris Jordan officiating. FOREST CITY — Mrs. Bessie Cooper Alley, 80, of 100 Heritage Village, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. A native of Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late Weldon and Lula Mae Robbins Cooper and widow of Chivous Bostic Alley. She was a retired textile employee and member of Riverside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Chivous Alley Jr.; a brother, Joney Lee Cooper; and four sisters, Fannie Cooper, Polly Wood, Melissa Lovelace and Lillian Loebig. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Virginia Alley of Polkville; an adopted daughter and husband, Marsha Alley and Robert Stuck of Fort Mill, S.C.; seven grandchildren and spouses, Alan and Sandra Alley Cooke of Boiling Springs, James Jr. and Rhonda Alley of Casar, Sammy Dale Alley of Morganton, Ruby and Robert Alley of Casar, Vik and Tammy Alley Kapoor of Mount Holly, Robert Stuck and Chris Stuck, both of Fort Mill, S.C.; and nine great-grandchildren, Luke, Brandon, Justin, Samantha, Pablo, Maya, Hannah, Faith and Alvin. Lewis Baley III
WILMINGTON — Mr. Lewis Josiah Baile, III, 55, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, after a heroic battle with cancer. He was born in Shelby on April 25, 1947, the son of the late Lewis Josiah Bailey Jr. and Mildred Grigg Baley. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in chemistry and retired from E.I. DuPont after 32 years of service. Lewis is survived by his wife of 33 years, Sandra Emory Baley; a daughter, Jennifer Baley Odham and husband, Robert Lee Odham III of Wilmington; and a son, Lewis Josiah Baley IV of Wilmington. He is also survived by a loving mother-in-law, Flossie Webb Emory of Weaverville. A graveside service will be Monday at 3 p.m. in Oleander Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. after the service at Andrews Valley Chapel.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Mr. Donald Floyd Geer, 76, of 1034 Pacolet Highway, Lot No. 1, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg. Henry Quinn
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Mr. Henry Randolph Quinn, formerly of Shelby, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, in Cleveland, Ohio, after a short illness. Born on Aug. 26, 1922, he attended public schools in Shelby, N.C. State University and was inducted into the Army in World War II. Upon discharge from the service, he joined IBM and was transferred to Montgomery, Ala. There he lived with relatives, the Joe Lacey family, left IBM to go into partnership with Joe Lacey Jr. designing and building residences and offices in the Southeast. He was preceded in death by his parents, Flay Dewitt and Helen Dover Quinn; two infant sisters; and a brother, F.D. Quinn Jr. He is survived by three sisters and a brother-in-law, Esther Ann and Edwin Ford, Virginia Williams of Poquoson and Carolyn Quinn of Shelby; one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Sonnya Quinn of Raleigh; five nieces, Helen Brooks Peck and husband, Tommy, of Boiling Springs, Amanda Hovis and husband, Richard, of Moore, S.C., Cynthia Bashford and husband, Robert, of Chapel Hill, Linda Williams of Poquoson, Ella Long and husband, Ben, of Asheville; seven nephews, Clark Ford and wife, Sherry, of Lenoir, F.D. Quinn III of Badin, Creighton Quinn of Wilmington, Sydney Quinn and wife, Lulu, of Wanchese, David Williams and wife, Irma, of Poquoson, Christopher Quinn and wife, Jenny, of Brevard and Abram Quinn of Raleigh; nine grand-nieces and six grand-nephews. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Shelby Presbyterian Church with Dr. Luke Harkey officiating. Joop Bakker
SHELBY — Mr. Joop Jan Bakker, 45, of 313 S. Poston St., died Friday, June 21, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was born Oct. 17, 1956, in Indonesia. As a child he lived in Indonesia, Libya and Holland. He moved to the United States with his parents in 1961, where North Carolina became his home. As a young man he learned to hunt, fish, camp and hike, and developed his artistic talents in photography, sculpture and making silver and gold jewelry. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and went on to receive his dental technician’s degree from Durham Technical College. He moved to Shelby in 1983 and started his career at North State Dental Lab, which he eventually owned and expanded. He met the love of his life, Mary Ann Franks, whom he married in 1985. They bought their dream home and had two sons, Drexel and Carson, who joined their parents in their love for basketball, soccer and the great outdoors. He was an entrepreneur and was invited to join a very elite international organization of dental technicians called “Oral Design.” He was one of 12 members in the United States and Canada. In addition to his skills at work, he was an avid cyclist, photographer and fisherman, and for a time, held the Eastern National Championship in small bore target shooting. He shared his love of fly fishing, silver casting, photography and a basic love of life with all. He was a gentle giant of a man who was an outstanding husband, father, son, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his father, Jan Bakker. He is survived by his mother, Christina G. Broekhuisen Bakker; his wife, Mary Ann Franks Bakker; and his two sons, Drexel Jan and Carson Joop Bakker, all of the home; his brother, Dr. Jos Johan Bakker (DDS) and his wife, Patti, and their children, Blakele and Cole of Destin, Fla.; sisters, Riejan Bakker Edmison and her husband, Allen, and their sons, Ty and Adam of Houston, Texas, and Michelle Bakker Pridgen and her husband Don of Elk Creek, Va. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. on Monday at the Episcopal Church of The Redeemer with the Rev. Gene McDowell officiating. The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. at Cecil M.
