Gwendolyn London
SHELBY — Mrs. Gwendolyn Jean Hunt London, 61, of 1600 Eaves Road, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Hospice of Wendover in Shelby. Born October 9, 1940, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Mabel Hicks Hunt and the late Thomas J. Hunt. She was employed as a jewelry maker for 20 years at the Fuller Findings Jewelry Co., in Providence, R.I. She was a member of Eskridge Grove Baptist Church. She leaves to cherish fond memories her mother, Mabel H. Hunt; one son, Raymond Leon London Jr. of Providence; four daughters, Debra K. Hunt Ross, Renné D. London and Margurita London, all of Shelby, and Florence Merissa London of Providence; her former husband, Raymond L. London Sr. of Shelby; two brothers, Thomas G. Hunt of Dallas, N.C., and Jocephis Hunt of Lima, Ohio; two sisters, Florence Hunt of Shelby and Frances K. Feyisitan of Providence; 17 grandchildren, Maurice Hunt, Justin Ross, Raymond London II, Shanada London, Woodrea London Ross, Ray Surratt Jr., Wayne London, Shalena London, Shawondra London, Mark London, Raymond London, Clyde London, Jason London, Jarrod London, Tayarnna London, Candia London and Demetreuss London; five great-grandchildren, Marlo Hunt, Kandia London, Bryson London, Cradeon Hopper Jr. and Kyeshaina London, and many other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Tuesday, at 3 p.m. at Eskridge Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Strickland Maddox officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service. At other times they will be at the home of her mother, Mabel H. Hunt, 1600 Eaves Road, Shelby. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

'Joey’ Bivens
FOREST CITY — Mr. Joseph “Joey” Bivens, 24, of 889 Rock Corner Road, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. Born Oct. 19, 1977, he was a native of Rutherford and a graduate of R.S. Central High School. He attended Spindale United Methodist Church. He is survived by his father, John Garland Bivens, and his mother, Betty Griffin Bivins, of Forest City. Joey dreamed of being a Winston Cup driver and raced for three years in that pursuit, winning the four cylinder points championship in 1998 at Harris Speedway. This dream was never realized due to injuries he received in an automobile accident the following year. He continued to be an inspiration to all those around him despite his disability. With enough love in your heart you can win them all! The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Crowe’s Funeral Home with the Revs. Richard Bass and Gerald Davis officiating. Burial will be in Spindale City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Massie Williams
SHELBY — Mrs. Massie Vinson Williams, of 413 Atlantic Ave., passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby. A native of Jones County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late William and Carrie Phelps Vinson. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and the Eastern Star, Elizabeth Chapter No. 3. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Williams; four sisters, Eunice C. Clark, Daisy Pounds Byrd, Mollie Vinson Grimes and Ida Jo Williams; and one brother, Willie Turner Vinson. She is survived by five daughters and two sons-in-law, Corene W. and John Barner of Pine Bluff, Ark., Annie W. Cornwell and Christine W. King, both of Hickory, Daisy W. and K.C. Withrow of Shelby, and Lillie W. Wray of Kingstown; one brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Alvester Vinson of Lawndale; one uncle and aunt, Charles and Nellie Vinson of Shelby; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Marcellous Mack, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Lawndale. The family will receive friends one hour before the services and at other times will be at the home of Massie V. Williams at 413 Atlantic Ave., in Shelby. Withrow’s Funeral Home of Kings Mountain is in charge of arrangements.

BOSTIC — Mrs. Maxine Melton Hollifield, 92, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Fair Haven Home. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Sunshine United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home.

Johnny Rogers
SHELBY — Mr. Johnny Everette Rogers, 74, of 351 Washburn Switch Road, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Cleveland Funeral Services. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.

Henry Allen
DREW, Miss. — Mr. Henry “Knuckles” Allen, 61, of 104 N. Broadway St., died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Beverly Health Care Center. A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was the son of the late Clara Allen. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Mary Louise Allen of Mississippi; a daughter, Constance Lomax of New York; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Billy Gene Allen of Shelby, James Edwards and Ruth Moses of Drew and Bobby Gene and Elizabeth Allen of Vineland, N.J.; six sisters, Eunice Goforth, Diane Allen and Janice Odoms, all of Shelby, Mary Jo Allen and Sadie Haney of Gaffney, S.C., and Shirley Douglas of Millville, N.J.; seven grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. A graveside service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in Webb Lawns. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Diane Allen at 129 Faith Drive, Waco. Genesis Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Emma Spikes
HIGH POINT — Mrs. Emma Olivia Spikes, 104, of 1002 Lake Crest Drive, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Sun Bridge Rehabilitation Center. A native of Green County, Ga., she was a homemaker. She was a member of Lula Shell Missionary Group and the Heriods of Jericho Providence Lodge No. 2 in Shelby. She was preceded in death by her husband, Miller Spikes; her parents, Parris and Eliza Sanders; two sons, two daughters; four sisters and a brother. She is survived by two daughters, Jeanette Spikes Roberts of the home and Lucy Spikes Mason of Ellenboro; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Vertie Spikes of Shelby; a daughter-in-law, Mattie Spikes of High Point; three sisters-in-law; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Lawndale Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church. Dockery’s Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Rubye Kastor
GASTONIA — Mrs. Rubye Washam Kastor, 91, of 691-A Carlton Drive, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Belaire Heather Care Center. She was born in North Mecklenburg County, on Aug. 6, 1910, to the late Nat B. and Ida Bush Washam. She was employed for 31 years by Southern Bell, where she was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and retired from the Columbia, S.C., office in 1975. Her working career took her all over of North and South Carolina and parts of Florida. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Gastonia and the Builders Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her first husband, George W. Nicholson; and her second husband, Leander S. Kastor. She is survived by two brothers, Ross D. Washam of Dallas, Texas and Dorman D. Washam and wife, Lucy, of Gastonia; and by several nieces and nephews in North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Texas. A graveside service will be held at the gravesite of her father and mother in Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Dr. Joseph Seymour officiating. The family will receive friends anytime at the home of Dorman D. and Lucy Washam, 691-B Carlton Drive, Gastonia. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 218, Gastonia, NC 28053. Clay-Barnette Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

FOREST CITY — Mrs. Mary Price, 94, of 129 Jackson St., died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at White Oak Manor. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Thompson Brothers Funeral Home of Forest City.

Earl Parker
SHELBY — Mr. Earl “Peewee Mickey” Parker, 74, of 405 Whitener St., died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Hospice of Wendover. Born Oct. 31, 1927, in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Gidney and Zella Page Parker. He retired from Roberts Delivery. He was a member of Shelby Missionary Methodist Church and served in the Navy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Ledford Parker; and two brothers, Boyce Parker and James Parker. He is survived by two sons, Randy Parker Sr. and wife, Barbara, of Belmont and Sammy Parker and wife, Susie, of Newton; two daughters, Dianne Albea and husband, Lewis, of Shelby and Sherry Horton of Newton; a brother, Gary Parker of Shelby; two sisters, Hilda Parker and Delores Cody and husband, Garland, all of Shelby; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Flint Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Dixon officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service at the church. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7:30 to 9 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Lori Lail, 2238 O.G. Lail Road, Shelby.

Mary Goins
SHELBY — Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Goins, of 2410 Old Gaffney Road, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be today at 2 p.m. at Trinity Pentecostal Holiness Church. Interment will be in Patterson Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Clay-Barnette Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Spurgeon Morrison
RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Spurgeon Morrison, 74, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wilson Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home.

Beatrice Tate
MOORESBORO — Mrs. Beatrice Summers Tate, 85, of 2226 Harris-Henrietta Road, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Fair Haven Home in Bostic. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Floyd’s Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Shane Kirby and Jim Diehl officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harrelson Funeral Home.

Sophronia Campbell
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Sophronia Patterson Campbell was born April 19, 1919, in Kings Mountain, the fifth child of the late Jasper and Beatrice Patterson. She was educated in the public schools of Cleveland County, graduating from Cleveland High School in Shelby. She was certified as a cosmetologist by LaMae Beauty College and practiced this trade for several years before matriculating at Johnson C. Smith University, where she earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. She continued her educational pursuits at the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, receiving a masters degree in education. Sophronia married the late Marshall Lee Campbell on June 29, 1941, and bore four children, Barbara Lee, who preceded her in death and Esther Vandora, Mark Donald and Marsh Ronald, who cherish her memory and morn her death. She began her professional career as a member of the faculty at Compact High School and continued her career at Central Junior High School from which she retired after 26 years of service to the public schools of Cleveland County and North Carolina. While her adult life was spent educating, influencing young lives and seeking ways to improve the lot and lives of those in need, she was also active in numerous religious, social and community organizations and activities. She was a member of Bynum’s Chapel AME Zion Church and past President of the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society, the Lincolnton District Spouse’s Widow(ers) Association, the Order of Eastern Star, the Cleveland County NAACP, a member of the Board of Mauney Library and she was a soror of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. In addition to her children and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, Sophronia is survived by two grandchildren, Rhonda C. Weaver and husband, Dan, and Marsha R. Campbell II; a great-grandson, Joshua Alexander Weaver; three sisters, Virginia P. Byers, Katherine P. Davis and husband, Lewis, and Heather P. Stephens; and three brothers, Eugene Patterson and wife, Doris, Alphonzo Patterson and Robert Patterson and wife, Ruth. A eulogistic service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. William H. Puryear officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:45 p.m. before the service at the church. J.W. Gill & Sons Funeral Home of Kings Mountain is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Tiernan
RICHMOND, Va, — Mr. Richard J. Tiernan, 90, of 1506 Grimes Road, died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Family Church with the Rev. Stan Pondo officiating. Burial will follow in St. Andrew’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home in Richmond.

Mary Schenck Goode Goforth
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Mary Schenck Goode Goforth, 84 years old, of 251 Goforth Road, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at her home. Born in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Rittie Harmon Goode. Mrs. Goforth was a graduate of Waco High School and a very active member of Beulah United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and organist. She played the piano and organ for the church for 70 years beginning when she was 10 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Goforth; a son, William Bryan Goforth; a grandson, Christopher Karl Hauser; and a sister, Ruth Goode Mills. She is survived by three daughters and two sons: Jane and her husband Doug Elmore of Lexington, Linda and her husband Wayne Stroupe of Gastonia, Helen and her husband Peter Hauser of Raleigh, Ed Goforth and his wife Pam of Kings Mountain, Paul Goforth and his wife Debbie of Kings Mountain. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Charles Elmore, Mark Elmore, Gini Elmore Chauncey, Molly Elmore Green, Rita Stroupe, Charles Stroupe, Stephen Stroupe, Todd Stroupe, Jeff Hauser, Jonathan Hauser, Jacob Hauser, Kathryn Goforth, Trip Goforth, Anna Goforth; and eight great-grandchildren, Stevie Chauncey, Kenneth Elmore, Kristen Elmore, Hannah Green, Sarah Green, Blake Elmore and Luke Goforth. Other surviving family members are Katherine Goode Goforth, sister; Joe and Sophia Goforth, Vernell Jones, Dolleta Goforth; and many nephews and nieces too numerous to list but who loved their aunt Mary Schenck. Tributes to her memory may be made to Cleveland County Hospice at 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150; or to Beulah United Methodist Church at 216 Country Club Road, Shelby, NC 28150; or to a favorite charity of the donor’s choice. Visitation will be Thursday night June 20, 2002, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain. Funeral services will be held Friday morning June 21, 2002, at 11 at Beulah United Methodist Church, Rev. Claudia Harrelson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mrs. Lucy Bailey Magness, 92, of 201 S. York St., died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Peachtree Centre in Gaffney, S.C. A graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Frederick Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bob DeVinney officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at White Columns-Blacksburg Funeral Service and at other times at 102 E. Pine St. in Blacksburg. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 1886, Gaffney, SC 29342.

RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. William Grover Matheny, 80, of 1020 Dark Corner Road, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Poors Ford Baptist Church with the Revs. Jimmy Cox and Carlton Hames officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Padgett and King Mortuary in Forest City.
