THEOLA SMITH
BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mrs. Theola Brooks Street Smith, 80, of 218 Caldwell Road, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney, S.C. Born in Sharon, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Langley Calhoun and Wren Hudson Street. She was a member of Canaan United Methodist Church and a graduate of Spartanburg Junior College. She was a retired president of the First National Bank of Sharon. At the time she was president, there were only seven women in the nation who were presidents of national banks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Miles Elbert Smith; four brothers, Ira Boyd Street, Gilbert Street, Harvard Street and Hover Street; and four half-brothers, Langley Street, Johnny Street, James Street and Lee Street. She is survived by a sister, Margaret Street Wilson of Lowrys, S.C., and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A graveside service was Monday at 11 a.m. at Canaan United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Phillips officiating. Pallbearers were Peter Wilson, Chris Faulkner, John Golden, Jeb Wilson, Ricky Powers and Rob Faulkner. The family received friends Sunday night at Gordon Mortuary and family members will be at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, 601 Colonial Ave., Gaffney, SC 29340.

PAUL BUCKNER
FOREST CITY — Mr. Paul Andrew Buckner, 71, of 279 Willow Run Drive, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, S.C. He was a native of Rutherford County and a son of the late Rassie and Mary Frances Mashburn Buckner. He was a member of Florence Baptist Church in Forest City and was a former employee of Fieldcrest Mills and Scott Vending Co. in Forest City. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Settlemyer Buckner of the home; a son, Mike Buckner and his wife, Tammie, of Lawndale; two daughters, Sandy Jolley and her husband, Rick, of Forest City and Paula Wilson and her husband, Tommy, of Forest City; a brother, Floyd Buckner of Mooresboro; two sisters, Allena Walker of Forest City and Margaret Barnes of Spindale; and eight grandchildren, Heather Jolley Walker, Rebekah Wilson, Sarah Buckner, Tommy Wilson, Amanda Jolley, Elizabeth Buckner, Rachel Wilson and Patrick Jolley. The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at Florence Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Gantt officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family received friends Monday at The Padgett and King Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Florence Baptist Church, 211 South Broadway St., Forest City, NC 28043.

FRANK SPENCER SR.
LAWNDALE — Mr. Frank Worth Spencer, 63, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at his home. Mr. Spencer was born May 17, 1939, in Morganton to the late William Alexander Spencer and Dorothy Beach Lawing. He attended Central High School in Charlotte. He owned and operated Spencer’s Exteriors. Mr. Spencer attended Friendship Methodist Church in Lawndale, was a member of the Cabarrus Masonic Lodge in Concord and also attended Concordia Shrine #113. He was preceded in death by a son, Frank W. Spencer Jr.; his brother, Jerry W. Spencer; and his sister, Mildred Lawing Harvey. Survivors include his sons, Richard Neil Spencer of Raleigh, Kevin A. Spencer of Indian Trail, Philip Thomas Spencer of Lawndale; daughters, Mariann Elaine Spencer of Concord, Getta Rathryn Hatchcock of Concord, Nicole Elizabeth Spencer of Lawndale; brothers, Robert C. Lawing of Charleston, S.C., Arthur L. Lawing of Little River, S.C., and Happy Lawing of Stanley; sisters, Ramona Spencer Ross of Concord and Nita Lawing Bennett of Stanley; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Raymer Funeral Home Chapel in Huntersville with the Rev. Raymond E. Davis officiating. Visitation will be tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 1229 Greenwood Cliff, Suite 109, Charlotte, NC 28204; or to American Diabetes. CHARLES FOSTER
WEWAHITCHKA, Fla. — Mr. Charles Edward Foster, 73, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Gulf Coast Hospital in Panama City, Fla. Mr. Foster is survived by his wife, Pearl Glass Foster of the home; seven children, one brother, Dewey Foster of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Margie Carter of Hickory Grove, S.C., and Hazel Foster of Rutherfordton. Mr. Foster was preceded in death by his parents, Brooks and Veta Phillips Foster, and a brother, Cecil Foster. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. in Wewahitchka. HUNTER WARE
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Hunter Ware, 101, of 832 Oak Grove Road, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Autumn Care in Forest City. He was a native of Cleveland County, the son of the late T.M. and Peannie Lovelace Ware. He was husband of the late Ocie Bell Ware. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Kings Mountain and was former owner of Ware Construction Co. in Kings Mountain. He is survived by four sons, Curtis Lee Ware and wife, Novella, Thomas Erskine Ware and wife, Daphine, Hunter Houston Ware and wife, Jearlene, and Bill E. Ware and wife, Becky, all of Kings Mountain; a daughter, Opal Drumm and husband, Marvin, of Kings Mountain; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Brackett and Gene Ware officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain and at other times at the home of his daughter, Opal Drumm, 832 Oak Grove Road, Kings Mountain. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church, 1022 Oak Grove Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086; or to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

MARY PRICE
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Mary Price, 94, of 129 Jackson St., died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at White Oak Manor. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at New Bethel Independent Church with the Rev. Barbara Petty officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

TONY SHULER
FOREST CITY — Mr. Tony Reid Shuler, 48, of 157 Leach Road, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Rinehart officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the Funeral Home.

FANNIE BURGESS
CAROLEEN — Mrs. Fannie Harrill Burgess, 87, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Autumn Care of Forest City. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home with Bishop Ron Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until the service at the funeral home.

VIVIAN MELTON
SHELBY — Mrs. Vivian Love Melton, 88, of Mooresboro Road, an angel of God, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 30, 2002. She was born May 24, 1914, in Catawba County to the late James L. Love and Lovenia Mace. Mrs. Melton was a homemaker and a member of the First Broad Baptist Church in Golden Valley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Melton, and a sister, Bell Van Dyke. She is survived by a daughter, Faye Melton Hoyle of Shelby; six grandchildren, Linda Person, Donnie Hoyle, Mary Klouse, Evelyn McNeely, Peggy Holtzclaw and Bertie Hoyle; and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton with the Revs. Little Eugene Bumgarner and Robert Deviney officiating. Burial will follow in First Broad Baptist Church Cemetery in Golden Valley. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Faye Hoyle.

GROVER — Mrs. Gwendolyn R. “Gwen” Smith, 62, of 241 Roseborough Road, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Hospice of Cleveland County. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Earl with the Rev. Nathaniel Craig officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. Genesis Funeral Service and Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

SADIE GILLIAM
LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Sadie Ruth Gilliam, 80, of 931 N. Aspen St., died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Cardinal Healthcare. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ebony &White’s Funeral Service.

Joyce Huber
SHELBY — Mrs. Joyce Carter Huber, 60, of 3375 Humphries Road, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Lee and Della Ramsey Carter. She retired from PPG Industries and was a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bud Carter and Jim Carter, and a sister, Frances White. She is survived by a son, Chuck McSwain of Shelby, two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Angela Huber of Lawndale and Danny and Melinda Huber of Ellenboro; a daughter, Denise Moss of Cherryville; three brothers, Tom Carter of Bostic, John Carter of Hickory Grove, S.C., and David Carter of Polkville; four sisters, Eloise Dysart of Mooresboro, Virginia Foster of Shelby, Martha Bridges of Lawndale and Betty Champion of Cherryville; and eight grandchildren. The funeral is tonight at 7 at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel in Fallston, with the Rev. Keith Love officiating. A graveside service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Rose Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 7 before the service. At other times, the family will be at the home of Jim and Martha Bridges, 125 Ball Park Road, Lawndale. Memorials may be made to Upper Cleveland Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 278, Lawndale, NC 28090.

Reece Burris
ALBEMARLE — Mr. Reece McDonald Burris, 64, of 20658 Biles Road, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Universal Health Care in Concord. Born Dec. 13, 1937, in Stanly County, he was the son of Evelyn Mavis Hatley Burris Freeman of Albemarle and the late Spencer Dee Burris. A retired automobile dealer, he had owned and operated Shelby Mazda. He as a graduate of Millingport High School and Pfeiffer College. He was an avid sportsman, particularly enjoyed hunting and was a member of Polokyv Ferry Hunt Club of Eastern North Carolina. He enjoyed auto racing, had raced sports cars and was a member of Southern Sports Car, Porsche Division. He belonged to John Knox Presbyterian Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Cordelia Jane Reynolds Burris of Albemarle; two daughters and their husbands, Sherri and Tim Ellis of Albemarle and Kimberly and Richard Tedder of Shelby; and six grandchildren, Matthew Timothy Ellis, Cara Elizabeth Ellis, Daniel Thomas Tedder, Kathrine Lynn Tedder, Julia Louise Tedder and Sarah Jane Tedder, all of Shelby. A graveside funeral will be Wednesday, July 3, at 4 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby, with the Rev. William Troutman officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord. At other times, the family will be at the home. After the graveside service, the family invites friend and family to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Tedder, 204 Adams St., Shelby, for fellowship and to share memories. J.D. ‘Jake’ Bridges
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. J.D. “Jake” Bridges, 87, of Summitt Place, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. He was a native of Cleveland County, son of the late C.O. and Ada Harris Bridges. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, a member of the American Legion and VFW and a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II. He retired from Foote Mineral Corp., Kings Mountain. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Lee Bridges of Kings Mountain; three sisters, Ruby Dillingham of Patterson Springs, and Polly Lackey and Betty Harton of Shelby; a nephew and his wife, Dr. Mike and Gale McKee of Burlington; a niece, Carolyn McSwain of Shelby, and other nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain Rest Cemetery, with Dr. John Sloan and the Rev. Morris Jordon officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 605 W. King St., Kings Mountain, NC 28086, or to National World War II Memorial, 2300 Clarendon Blvd., Suite 501, Arlington, VA 22201.

Mary Johnson
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Mary Beasley Johnson, 85, of 223 N. Carpenter St., died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. Born Aug. 2, 1916, in Hartsville, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Boyd and Mary Jeff Beasley. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Earl and Heron of Jericho. She is survived by two sons, James Johnson of Buffalo, N.Y., and Garland Johnson of Elgin, S.C.; three daughters, Creola Mathews of Grover and Maeola Mathews and Jessie Brice of Elgin; a brother, Joe Beasley of Grover; two sisters, Judith Burson of Asheville and Bertha Jennings of Capitol Heights, Md.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Earl. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. At other times, the family will be at 1510 Long Branch Road, Grover. Withrow’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

FOREST CITY — Mrs. Vassey Cecilia Watts Earley, 80, of 2270 Oakland Road, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral is today at 2:30 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Ivey officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.

LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Bunola Reep Gilbert, 87, of Life Care Center in Banner Elk, formerly of Cat Square Road, Lincolnton, died Saturday, June 29, 2002. The funeral is today at 2 p.m. in Warlick Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Linda Stack Morgan officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton. The family receives friends Sunday.
