LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Jennie Morning Bailey, 78, of 515 Generals Blvd., died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Brian Center in Lincolnton. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Ebony & White’s Funeral Service with Elder L.C. Smith officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the funeral home.

LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Sadie Ruth Kelly Gilliam, 80, of 931 N. Aspen St., died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Cardinal Healthcare in Lincolnton. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Turner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church. Ebony & White’s Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

CHARLOTTE — Mr. Clarence L. Jolly Jr., 75, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte. A memorial service will be Saturday at 5 p.m. at Lamp Light Church in Charlotte with the Rev. Jim Hall officiating. A private graveside burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. SHELBY — Mrs. Ethel Champion Weathers, 86, of 302 Old Mill Road, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, she was a homemaker and member of Double Shoals Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by parents, Edgar Champion Sr. and Lela Wright Champion; her husband, William Alton Weathers; two brothers, Ralph Champion and Edgar Champion Jr.; and three sisters, Ruth Hopper, Luna Wellmon and Larine Lanier. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary and L.G. Hopper of Gastonia and Joan Weaver of Shelby; five brothers, Raymond Champion, Ray Champion and Hal Champion, all of Shelby, Buford Champion of Swainesville and Jack Champion of Cherryville; three sisters, Diane Earwood of Shelby, Vernie Houser of Charlotte and Brenda Marlow of Gastonia; eight grandchildren, Wanda Beane of Sampson, Ala., Patty Beane of Hickory Grove, S.C., Barbara Barker of Bessemer City, Susan Arrendale of Gastonia, Tim Hopper of Cherryville, Larry Weaver of Lincolnton, Lisa Buckner of Candler and Ericka Martin of Shelby; and 15 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Double Shoals Baptist Church with the Rev. Eric Davis officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight 5 to 7 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Double Shoals Baptist Church Building Fund, 318 Old Mill Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

Alda Weaver
ELLENBORO — Mrs. Alda Butler Weaver, 74, of 2007 Oak Grove Church Road, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen, with the Revs. Joe Forber and Lamar Hewitt officiating. Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home and other times at the home of her brother, Marshall Butler, Webb Church Road, Ellenboro.

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS, Ala. — Ms. Ava Lee Kiser, 90, formerly of Cherryville, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002. Carpenters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Merritt
SHELBY — Mrs. Margaret Greene Merritt, 88, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at her home. She attended Shelby School of Nursing and was a student in the first graduating class of the nursing program at Duke University. She joined the Army during World War II. Her duties included head surgical nurse in the operating room of a MASH unit. During her 22-month tour of duty in Europe, she received two battle ribbons for her participation in the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy Invasion, D-Day. After retiring from Cleveland Regional Medical Center, she continued her career as a private duty nurse. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Shelby, American Nurses Association, Eastern Star Chapter 287 at Camp Call, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Shelby Garden Club, American Legion Post and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester Dorsey Merritt; her parents, George Anderson Greene and Sara Elizabeth Mauney Greene; four brothers, Ben, Raymond, Max and Robert Earl Greene; and a sister, Grace Greene Jones. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Edward Dorsey and LeahAnn Merritt of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail Elizabeth Merritt and John W. Slate III of High Point; two brothers, Anderson B. Greene of Shelby and George D. Greene of Raleigh; a sister, Shirley Greene Ryan of Shelby; and four grandchildren, Jordan Slate Horan and husband, Michael, John W. Slate IV, Stewart Dorsey Slate and Matthew Brent Merritt. A memorial service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Drs. Robert W. Canoy and Gene Watterson officiating. The family will receive friends today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 120 N. Lafayette St., Shelby, NC 28150; or to Leukemia Society of American, 600 3rd Ave., New York City, NY 10016.

Thelma Homesley
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Thelma Margaret Hammitt Homesley, 87, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Lexington Medical Center in Lexington, S.C. A native of Spartanburg, S.C., she was born July 6, 1914, the daughter of the late Samuel Willis and Julia Bernice Kiser Hammitt and her late adopted parents, Jacob and Kate Kiser. She was a homemaker and a longtime member of First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and adopted parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James T. Homesley in 1993; three brothers, Clyde, Carl and Forrest Hammitt; and a sister, Ava Lee Kiser. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, J. Harold and Barbara Homesley of St. Simons Island, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynette and Paul Taylor of Lexington, S.C.; five granddaughters, Melinda Parker, Sandra Queen, Eugenia Beam and Edwina Aaron all of Columbia, S.C.. and Paula Homesley of Cherryville; three grandsons, Hal Homesley of Atlanta, Mitch Homesley of Charlotte and Bo Taylor of Marietta, Ga.; and 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Vince Hefner and the Rev. Donald Davis officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Yates Robbins
GROVER — Mr. Yates Robbins, 70, of 242 Runyans Road, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at home. A native of Cleveland County, he retired from Ora Mill in 1993 as a blender operator. He was a member of High Shoal Baptist Church and deacon, trustee, custodian and head usher. He was preceded in death by parents, Rufus Robbins and Ida Mae Heffner Robbins; his first wife, Margaret Allen Robbins; five brothers; two sisters; one child; and one grandchild. He is survived by his wife, Christine Oliver Robbins of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Furman and Rita Robbins of Shelby and Donald and Becky Robbins of Mooresboro; two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Mike Culberson of Mooresboro and Judy and Randy Henderson of Shelby; a stepson and his wife, Ricky and Lynn Oliver of Grover; two grandsons, Daniel Miller and Guy Robbins; three granddaughters, Sharon Miller, Jessica Henderson and Alison Henderson; three great-grandchildren, Chanity Miller, Chris Miller and Jacob Miller; a stepgrandson, Richard Oliver; a stepgranddaughter, Sherry Oliver; a stepgreat-grandson, Ryan Oliver; a brother, Jim Robbins of Grover; and two sisters, Mazelle Shehan of Shelby and Frances Wall of Grover. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at High Shoal Baptist Church with the Revs. Eugene Passmore and Bobby Callahan officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mr. Horace Lee Lattimore, 73, of 983 Batchelor Drive, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. A graveside service will be today at 3 p.m. in Clingman Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jim Clark officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:45 p.m. today at White Columns-Blacksburg Funeral Services and at other times at the home of Teresa Hughey, 157 Lois Drive, Gaffney, S.C. Stella Ballard
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Stella Mae Jenkins Ballard, 86, of 511 South Elm St., died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Carolina Care. She was a native of Lincoln County, born May 29, 1916, the daughter of the late Jacob Andrew and Lillie Prue Lineberger Jenkins, wife of the late Howard B. Ballard. She retired as city clerk of the City of Cherryville, serving there for 24 ½ years. She was a member of First Wesleyan Church, Sunday School Teacher, and Youth Leader. Her church was paramount in her life. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Jenkins; and a sister, Ailene Sullivan. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Joe J. and Jan Ballard of Cherryville; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda B. and Carroll Carpenter of Cherryville; a sister, Mrs. Thelma “Toots” Abernathy of Lincolnton; seven grandchildren, Angela Carswell, Candy Wright, Blake Carpenter, Kevin Carpenter, Heather Carpenter, Dana Peres, Jamey Wyatt; and six great-grandchildren, Zach Bridges, Stephanie Wright, Emily Wright, Ashley Smith, Lindsey Ballard, Mary Beth Wyatt. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Wesleyan Church with Pastor, Rev. Mark B. Poe and Rev. Dr. Vance Hefner officiating. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. ‘Jake’ Bridges
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. J.D. “Jake” Bridges, 87, of Summitt Place, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. He was a native of Cleveland County, son of the late C.O. and Ada Harris Bridges. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. and served in the Army in World War II. He was retired from Foote Mineral Corp. in Kings Mountain. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Lee Bridges of Kings Mountain; three sisters, Ruby Dillingham of Patterson Springs, Polly Lackey and Betty Harton, both of Shelby; a nephew, Dr. Mike McKee and wife, Gale, of Burlington and their daughters, Laura “Scooter” McKee and Dr. Amanda McKee; four nieces, Carolyn McSwain of Shelby, Patty McArthur, Amy Hamrick, Heidi Hinchey; and other nieces and nephews. A graveside service was Tuesday in Mountain Rest Cemetery with Dr. John Sloan and the Rev. Morris Jordon officiating. The family received friends before the service at Harris Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 605 West King St., Kings Mountain, NC 28086; or to National World War II Memorial, 2300 Clarendon Blvd., Suite 501, Arlington, Va. 22201.

Juanita Ball
BESSEMER CITY — Mr. Juanita Stephenson Ball, 79, of 148 Wandering Lane, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Rehab. & Health Center in Gastonia. Born July 8, 1922, in Swain County, she was a daughter of the late John and Hattie Hayes Stephenson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Will Ball. She is survived by two sons, Joseph Ball Sr. and wife, Vera, of Bessemer City and Jack Ball and wife, Patricia, of Gastonia; two daughters, Rachel Crawford of Belmont and Brenda Thomas of Kings Mountain; a brother, Clarence Stephenson of Hickory; a sister, Marie Adams of Bryson City; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at True Gospel Baptist Church, Dallas, N.C. with the Rev. Randy Funderburk officiating. Burial will be in Westview Gardens, Bessemer City. Pallbearers are Bobby Austin, Jimmy Ball, Lonnie Ball, Jack Ball Jr., Joseph Ball Jr., and Roger Dale McDaniel. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church. J.D. Self
SHELBY — Mr. J.D. Self, 87, of 506 Dennis Dr., died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, he was born May 12, 1915, the son of the late Cordelia Self Brackett. He was a retired air conditioning and refrigeration serviceman at Ora Mill Company where he worked for 36 years. He was a member of Hoyle Memorial United Methodist Church. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lucy Bumgardner. He is survived by a wife of 64 years, Quessie Hunt Self of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Wilma Self of Shelby; two brothers, John Ray Brackett of Lawndale and Ted Brackett of Hendersonville; three sisters, Jessie Sweezy of Shelby, Dessie Brackett of Hendersonville and Carrie Lovelace of Ellenboro; a granddaughter, Lori Wortham; a grandson, Eric Self and a great-grandchild, Ashley Wortham. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park. LAWNDALE — Mrs. Laura Williams Shuford, 86, of 143 Elam St., died Tuesday, July 2, 2002. A native of Cleveland County, she was born April 19, 1916, the daughter of the late Floyd Alexander and Pearl Toney Williams. She was retired from Cleveland Mills/Ansley Corp. She was a member of Palm Tree United Methodist Church where she served as a choir member, Sunday school teacher and member and past president of the United Methodist Women. She was a former member of the Lawndale Woman’s Club and Lawndale Homemakers Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Corp. Glenn Williams. She is survived by a husband of 67 years, John Martin Shuford; a daughter, Barbara Shuford Wright of Kings Mountain; a sister, Bryte McEntire of Lawndale; two granddaughters and a spouse, Alicia Wright of Morganton and Michelle and Jerry James of Kingstree, S.C. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Palm Tree United Methodist Church with the Revs. Merrill Perkins, Jim Scott and David Reep officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home.
