Mary Lee Cherry
SHELBY — Mrs. Mary Lee Tory Cherry, 69, of 202 Palmer St., died Friday, July 5, 2002, at home. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late John Isaac Josepheus Tory and the late Louella Durham Hartsfield. She was a member of Eskridge Grove Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Cherry; and two sisters, Sarah Ruth Huggins of Philadelphia and Nellie Pauline Walls of Shelby. She leaves to cherish fond memories a son and daughter-in-law, LeeRoy and Yolande M. Johnson of Shelby; a sister, Gourdie Lou Hayes Thomas of Washington, D.C.; and a brother, Bobby Getter of Forest City; three grandchildren, Ronald C. Wright, Elesha Y. Johnson and Anthony J. Johnson, all of Shelby; four great-great-grandchildren, Brittney V. Johnson, Shanice L. Wright, Jada L. Johnson and Ikee I. Bridges, all of Shelby; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Eskridge Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Strickland Maddox officiating. Burial will be in at the church cemetery. CAROLEEN — Mrs. Jessica Pauline Hollifield Robertson, 88, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Autumn Care of Forest City. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home with the Revs. Trey Gilliam and Kevin Rhom officiating. Burial will be in High Shoal Baptist Church cemetery. Paul Seal
SHELBY — Mr. Paul Wesley Seal, 92, of 614 Peach St., died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Factoryville, Pa., he graduated in 1931 from Lehigh University with a degree in electrical engineering. He was a former plant manager for Central Cable, former electrical engineer with Allegheny Ludlum Steel and founded Seal Wire Co. in 1956. He was a Past Master of LaBelle Vallee Masonic Lodge No. 232, Jersey Shore, Pa., and was member of Shelby Presbyterian Church. He was a charter Board of Director of Boys Club of America in Shelby. He was named “Fan of the Year” and always a strong supporter of Shelby High School sports teams. He was preceded in death by his parents, William C. and Henrietta Foust Seal; his wife of 54 years, Ruth Detwiler Seal; and a brother, George William Seal. He is survived a daughter and son-in-law, Susan S. and John Haskell of Shelby; a sister, Marjorie C. Seal of Matthews; and a grandchild, Robin D. Haskell of Charlotte. A graveside service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park with the Rev. Luke Harkey officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home. SHELBY — Mrs. Lucille Sharp Morgan, 78, of Columns Circle, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at her home. Born Dec. 6, 1923, in Winthrop, Ark., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Barnabas and Lucy Schlup Sharp. She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Charlotte. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy, T.B. and Emmit Sharp; and three sisters, Mary Morgan, Beatrice Scarborough and Erma Wright. She is survived by her husband, John Allen Morgan of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynda and Gerry Mayo of Atlanta and Peggy and Ali Paksoy Jr. of Shelby; four grandchildren, Stephanie Norrell of Montgomery, Ala., Lance Shapiro of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Travis Mayo of Seattle and Whitney Bridges of Los Angeles; three great-grandchildren, George Norrell, William Norrell and Whit Shapiro; and two sisters, Martha Sharrock of Oklahoma City and Shirley Morgan of San Antonio. The funeral will be today at 10:30 a.m. at the Community of Christ Church in Winthrop, Ark., with Terry Hess officiating. Burial will be in Campground Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Brooks and Susan Burton of De Queen, Ark. ‘Coach’ Jackson
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Mrs. Marion “Coach” Jackson, 75, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Winter Haven Hospital in Winter Haven. Born Dec. 18, 1926, in Granite Falls, she was a physical education teacher for the Polk County School System for more than 28 years, teaching seventh grade physical education at Jewett Junior High School in Winter Haven. She was a Methodist. She is survived by her husband, David J. Jackson of Winter Haven; a son, Edward Hayden Jackson of Heathrow, Fla.; two daughters, Becky VonBorstel of Tucson, Ariz., and Judy Williamson of Tampa, Fla.; and one grandchild. Born in Union County, she was the daughter of the late Bazel and Ada McManus Deese and a homemaker. She was a member of Manna Baptist Church Adult Sunday School class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Junior Pearson. She is survived by two sisters, Maudena Parker of Polkville and Carolyn Craig of Waxhaw. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Manna Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Whitlock officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. SHELBY — Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Yarboro Bowen, 76, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Olan and Lela Allen Yarboro. She was a member of Double Shoals Baptist Church and was a Sunday school teacher and choir member. She was retired as a secretary with the Veterans Administration and the North Carolina Department of Transportation. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Bowen Jr. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Al Purvis of High Point and Jeanne and Benson Tyner of Burnsville; four grandchildren, Stacy Purvis, Sarah and John Foster, Marc Tyner and Meg Tyner; and a great-grandson, Jack Foster. A graveside service will be today at 11 a.m. at Double Shoals Baptist Church cemetery with the Revs. Eric Davis and Fred McGehee officiating. A memorial service will follow in the church. CONCORD — Miss Susannah Holland Sheridan, 2, of Beckette Court, former resident of Columbia, S.C., died Friday morning, July 5, 2002, at her home. Born July 20, 1999, in Columbia, S.C., she was the daughter of David J. and Kirby Pfeiffer Sheridan. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Patricia J. Pfifer and A. Graham Pfifer, both of Shelby, and Mr. and Mrs. James R. Sheridan of Charlotte; two sisters, Carlisle Sheridan and Meredith Sheridan of the home; and a brother, McCann Sheridan of the home. SHELBY — Mr. Joseph Ladd DeBrew, 53, of 1753 Melrose Drive, died Friday, June 5, 2002, at VA Medical Center in Asheville. Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of Elizabeth McCurry DeBrew of Shelby and the late J. Howard DeBrew. He was owner of DeBrew Landscaping and a member of First Baptist Church. He served in the Navy in the Vietnam conflict. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Donna DeBrew of Anderson, S.C.; a nephew, Christopher DeBrew of Anderson; and a niece, Storey DeBrew of Anderson. A graveside service will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in Sunset Cemetery with the Revs. Perry Hollaman and C.T. Harris officiating.
