‘Buzz’ Walters Sr.
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Charles Warrick “Buzz” Walters Sr., 50, of 5134 E. Dixon Blvd., died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, he was a self-employed truck driver leased to Star Freight of Charlotte. He was a member of El Bethel United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain. He was preceded in death by his mother, Joy Harris Walters. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Canipe Walters of the home; his father, Charles Pinckney Walters of Shelby; two sons, Charles W. “Buzzy” and William Daniel Walters of the home; a daughter, Annie Lee Walters of the home; four sisters, Karen Gee and her husband, Paul, of Huntersville, Becky Browning and husband, Bill, of Charlotte, Patty Koury and husband, Bob, of Raleigh and Melinda Walters and husband, Mal Martin, of Marion; one granddaughter, Cheyanne Danielle-Lee Walters; and 13 nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at El Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Sidney Lanier and Bruce Hobson officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home. Rev. Robin Kingston
SHELBY — The Rev. Robin Kay Rogers Kingston, 47, of 867 College Ave., died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at Hospice of Cleveland County. Born in Laurel, Miss., she was minister at Sharon United Methodist Church. She received a master of music degree from University of Southern Mississippi. She taught at St. Timothy’s School in Townson, Md. Her call to ministry then took her to Perkins Theological Seminary, Southern Methodist University. While serving as music minister at First Presbyterian Church in Asheville, she was called to preach. The Rev. Kingston earned a master of divinity from Erskine Seminary, also pastoring two churches in Asheville. She graduated with honors in 2000 and was sent to Sharon United Methodist Church in June of that year. She served as a Chaplain at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. The Rev. Kingston was also a member of the National Honors Society, Daughters of American Revolution and the Emmaus Community. She was preceded in death by her father, John L. Rogers. She is survived by her husband, Richard Kingston; two sons, Robert and Richard; and her mother, Imogene Rogers. A memorial service will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Sharon United Methodist Church with Bishop Charlene Kammerer, the Rev. Lynn Caldwell, District Superintendent, High Point, the Rev. Ben Stewart, District Superintendent, Gastonia, and the Rev. Fred Macon, District Superintendent, Asheville, retired, officiating. The family will receive friends two hours before the service at the church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Zeb V. Blanton Jr. Memorial Prayer Garden Fund. A memorial service will also be held in Asheville at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, July 21, 2002, at 4 p.m. and another memorial service will be held in Laurel, Miss., at a later date. Barbara Kimble
SHELBY — Mrs. Barbara Mauney Kimble, 52, of 1306 Concord St., died at home. Born Aug. 21, 1949, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Lucille Shuford Mauney and the late George Albert Mauney. She was employed by Spartan Mills (old Cleveland Mills) for nearly 30 years. She was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church, where she served on the Usher Board, and the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Brenda Jones Brown and Ms. Linda Kay Mauney. She leaves to cherish fond memories, a special friend, Benjamin F. Bradshaw; three sons, Dedrick Lamar Kimble, and daughter-in-law, Trina Kimble, Travis Eugene Kimble and Marlon Gerod Kimble; four sisters and four brothers-in-law, Alma Jean and L.C. Brisco, Janice and Johnny Kerkland, Stella and George Ward, all of Lawndale, Mary L. and Samuel Eskridge of Shelby; 10 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and many relatives and friends. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Lawndale with the Rev. Roger Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Philadelphia Church Cemetery. Anne Ferrer
SHELBY — Mrs. Anne Mandala Ferrer, 87, of White Oak Manor, 401 N. Morgan St., died Monday, July 8, 2002, at her residence. A native of New York, N.Y., she was born March 30, 1915. She was a homemaker and member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Shelby. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tony and Mary Allongi Mandala and her husband, Louis Munoz Ferrer. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol and James W. Harper of Shelby and Barbara Pla of Tampa, Fla.; two sons, Steve Rojo of Georgia and Ronald Pla of Tallahassee, Fla.; two brothers, Anthony Mandala of Italy and John Mandala of California; three sisters, Dorothy Klaschka of New Jersey, Tina Lister of Florida and Rose Klaschka of South Carolina. She helped rear grandchildren Justin Harper, Glen Pla and Dorinda Pla as well as numerous other grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Father Eric Houseknecht officiating. Interment will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, Carol at 5004 Bowen Drive, Shelby. ‘Zeeke’ Smarr
SHELBY — Mr. Isaiah “Zeeke” Smarr, 72, of 2602 Elizabeth Ave., departed this life on Friday, July 5, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Hickory Grove, S.C., he was born Oct. 31, 1929, the son of the late Roger and Mary Hendrick Smarr. He attended York School while a youth. He retired in 1992 as head custodian form Lattimore Elementary School in Lattimore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Keith N. Hopper; a sister, Lizzie Bell Smarr; and four brothers, Joseph, Lecore, Jeff and Lalaster Smarr. He leaves to cherish fond memories Barbara Fuller Smarr; a daughter and son-in-law, the Rev. Margaret G. and Grady Powell of York, S.C.; a son, Joseph Oscar Tracy Hopper of Fort Wayne, Ind.; three granddaughters, Kesha Y. Powell of Ebinport, S.C., Kenya Powell of Willow Glen, S.C., and Jacqueline Tracilla Amanda Hopper of Shelby; a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline D. Hopper of Shelby; a special nephew, J.T. Smarr, of Shelby and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Light Oak Baptist Church with the Rev. D.W. Wray officiating. SHELBY — Mr. Carl William Worthey, 68, of 2414 Emerald Mine Road, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Robert L. “Jack” and Georgia Ledwell Worthey. He was former owner of Worthey’s Shoe Shop, a member of Abundant Life Church of God, where he served as head usher, greeter and president of Men’s Fellowship, and a veteran of the Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Billy Byers Jr. and Tabitha Byers. He is survived by his wife, Patsy Greene Worthey of the home; two daughters, Penny Worthey and her friend, Howard Stroup, of Grover, and Patricia W. Byers and her husband, Billy, of Kings Mountain; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Margaret Worthey of Cherryville and Dan and Brenda Worthey of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Frances W. and Norman Stranger of Mount Holly; a granddaughter, January Cook of Casar; three grandsons, Carl Philbeck and Tony Philbeck of Waco and Gary Emery Jr. of Grover; a stepgrandson, Timothy Willis of Waco; two stepgranddaughters, Jennifer Emery of Charleston, S.C., and Melissa Byers Greene of Gastonia; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Ashley Bowen of Gastonia; two great-grandsons, Christopher Cook and Austin Cook of Casar; and his favorite pet, Petie. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Abundant Life Church of God, with Pastor Bobby Callaham officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Born July 20, 1999, in Columbia, S.C., she was the daughter of David J. and Kirby Pfeiffer Sheridan. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Patricia J. Pfifer and A. Graham Pfifer, both of Shelby, and Mr. and Mrs. James R. Sheridan of Charlotte; a great-grandmother, Mrs. B.M. Jarrett of Shelby; two sisters, Carlisle Sheridan and Meredith Sheridan of the home; and a brother, McCann Sheridan of the home. CASAR — Mr. John Franklin Ledford, 81, of 301 Corinth Church Circle, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, he was born Jan. 5, 1921. He was a retired self-employed farmer and member of New Home United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Marvin and Buna Lattimore Ledford; and a sister, Virginia Ledford. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary C. Ledford of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Brenda Ledford and Billy and Sherry Ledford, all of Lawndale; and a grandson and his wife, Max and Pam Ledford of Lawndale. The funeral will be tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed Lee officiating. A graveside service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at New Home United Methodist Church Cemetery. A native of Cleveland County, he was a retired owner and operator of Causby’s Stop and Shop on Washburn Switch Road in Shelby. He was a member of Double Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph C. and Cora Paxton Causby. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene Lovelace Causby of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Johnny Gantt of Boiling Springs and Wanda and Glenn Rabb of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Jaime Rabb of Los Angeles; four grandsons, Todd Gantt and his wife, Ginger, of Catawba, Michael Gantt and his wife, Ruby, of Fort Worth, Texas, Scott Gantt of Shelby and Wesley Rabb of Winston-Salem; a great-grandson, Brian Gantt of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Anna Catherine Causby of Shelby; and two sisters, Myrtle and Margaret Causby of Shelby; two stepbrothers, Albert and Clyde Bowen of Shelby; and a stepsister, Ruth Preston of Shelby. The funeral will be Monday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Cleveland Funeral Services with the Rev. Jim Sparks and Michael Gantt officiating.
