Leona Hazel Norman
Leona Hazel Norman, age 76, of 349 State Street, Marion, died Wednesday, November 26, 2003 in the McDowell Hospital.
Born in McDowell County to the late James Bernie Ward and Bessie Leona Bowman Ward, she was a homemaker and a member of Remnant Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Cleveland Norman and a son, Billy Dean Norman.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Linda Kaye Norman of the home, Barbara Starkey and husband, Oris of Marion, N.C.; 3 brothers, Bill Ward, Tommy Ward, Bernie Ward all of Marion; 5 sisters, Wilma Norman of Morganton, N.C. Zelma Hollifield and Mary Anna McCurry both of Marion, Doris Webb of Nebo and Ina McKinney of Old Fort; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 11:00 Saturday, November 29, 2003 in McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. Rev. Milton Hollifield and Rev. Bill Warren will officiate will officiate with burial following in Remnant Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family c/o Barbara Starkey – P.O. Box 2614 – Marion, N.C. 28752.

Maude Pitts Franklin
Maude Pitts Franklin, age 87, died Sunday, March 7, 2004 at Autumn Care of Drexel.
She was born May 22, 1916 in Burke County to the late Garfield and Mabel Boyd Pitts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Franklin.
Surviving are five sisters, Sarah Pitts of Drexel, Mary Stamey of Hickory, Ada Jones of Charlotte, Sue Isaacs and her husband, Vaughn of Glen Alpine, and Lucille McGimpsy of Glen Alpine. Also surviving is a special friend, Jerry Butler.
Graveside Services will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery on Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. with the Reverend Frank Gordon officiating. The Family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.

Ronald Dockery
Ronald Dockery, age 61, of 3408 Mudcut Road, Marion, N.C. died Thursday, July 29, 2004 in N.C. Baptist Hospital.
Born in Cherokee County, N.C., to the late Hill and Ester Mae Jones Dockery, he was a retired employee of Ethan Allen.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Janice O’Dear Dockery and brothers, Chuck Dockery, James Junior Dockery and Kendol Dockery.
Surviving are his wife, Glenda Ray Dockery; one son, Brad Dockery of Marion; one daughter, Kim Hollifield of Marion; a stepson, Ellis Ledford and a stepdaughter, Cindy Ledford, both of Marion; three brothers, Carroll Dockery of Mooresville, Boyd Dockery of Andrews and Dean Dockery of Marble; two sisters, Edna Mae Cross of Andrews and Mary Ellen Mehaffey of Robbinsville; and six grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. Rev. Ken Page will officiate with burial following in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ralph Leon Hardy of Nebo, died Friday, January 21, 2005 in McDowell Hospital.
Arrangements will be announced at a later date by Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.
Mr. Arlo J. Goins
Mr. Arlo J. Goins, 79, of Banner Elk, died Thursday, May 1, 2003 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.
Funeral services for Mr. Goins will be 3:00 PM Sunday, May 4, 2003 at Kirksey Memorial Chapel with Elder E. F. Hertzel officiating.
There will be no visitation.

Leo Eugene Hollifield “Smokey”,
Leo Eugene Hollifield “Smokey”, age 77, of Burma Rd., Nebo, N.C. died Sunday, September 28, 2003 in Memorial Mission Hospital, Asheville.
Born in McDowell County to the late Harvey Clay Hollifield and Fitimia Hensley Hollifield, he was a retired employee of Hanes and a veteran of the US Navy.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine Brewer Hollifield; two sons, Michael Eugene Hollifield of Sparks, Ga. And Larry Dean Hollifield of the home; two daughters, Sandy R. Smith of Nebo, N.C. and Brenda Kay Young of Morganton, N.C.; two sisters, Nanabelle Fender of Valdese, N.C. and Shirley Novella Bentley of Marion, N.C.; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
2:00 o’clock Services will be held Wednesday, October 1, 2003 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. Rev. Marty Bess and Rev. Clyde Thomason will officiate with burial following in Murphy’s Chapel Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 at Kirksey Funeral Home.

Mr. Quincy E. Chambers
Mr. Quincy E. Chambers, 68, of Nebo, died Sunday, May 23, 2004.
Mr. Chambers had no surviving relatives, but had many people that cared for him and will remember him fondly as a sweet and loving man.
Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion is in charge of Mr. Chambers arrangements.
Mr. Billy Alexander Harbison
Mr. Billy Alexander Harbison, 71, of Pax Hill Road in Morganton died Monday December 13, 2004 at Baptist Hospital in Winston - Salem . He was born May 18, 1933 in Burke County to the late Alexander Wilson Harbison and Cornelia S. Harbison.
Billy was a 1952 graduated of Morganton High School, served in the U. S. Navy and had graduated from Mars Hill College. He was retired from Simplex time recorder after twenty eight years, had owned and operated Timerill mobile park for fifteen years and was a long time member of the Chesterfield Fire Department.
He is survived by; his wife Bobbie Jo Harbison; son Brain Alexander Harbison and wife Jennifer of Chattanooga Tennessee ; stepson Tony Story of Gamewell; sister Sara H. Kelly of Pinehurst; brother Richard Harbison of High Point; three grandchildren and one step grandson.
A celebration of Bill’s life will begin 2:00 PM Saturday, December 18, 2004 at his residence. It was Bill’s request that his body be donated to Baptist Hospital Medical Research Center.

William Haskell ‘Hack’ Poteat, Sr.
Hack Poteat, 89, long time resident of Marion died quietly Tuesday, May 17, 2005 while at the Beehive Assisted Living Home in Colorado Springs, CO. His loving granddaughter Veronica Poteat was at his side.
Born October 14, 1915 in McDowell County, Hack was the son of the late William Logan Poteat and Mary Alice Randolph Poteat. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of over 50 years Edith Kiser Poteat and his second wife Mary Collis Poteat; sisters Cabra Poteat Vess, Juanita Poteat Hall, and Myrtle Poteat Carswell.
Hack leaves behind to cherish his memory a son William Haskell Poteat, Jr. of Sun City, CA and La Penita del Jal., Mexico; sister Jewell Poteat Smith of Marion; two granddaughters, Veronica Poteat of Colorado Springs, CO. and Valerie Poteat Ybarra of Riverside, CA; grandson, Gregory Cole Poteat of Colorado Springs, CO; three great granddaughters Melissa, Breanne and Brandee of Riverside, CA; and numerous nephews, nieces and grand nephew and nieces.
Hack was a veteran of WWII serving in the Navy on the fighting ship, USS Biloxi, and a long time member of the Mystic Tie Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post in Marion; he was also a life-long member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Marion and, for 20 years, the Central Assembly Church in Albuquerque, NM.
Services will be held Monday, May 23, 2005 at 4:00p.m., at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Family will receive friends the same day, at the Church, from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. A memorial fund in Hack’s memory has been set with The Mt. Mitchell Shrine Club.
Beulah Loftis Parker
Beulah Loftis Parker, age 79, of Marion, died Thursday, May 1, 2003 in Grace Hospital, Morganton.
Born in McDowell County to the late John Harvey Loftis and Cora Davis Loftis, she was a retired employee of Cross Cotton Mill and a member of Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Charles Parker; two sons, Charles Gary Parker and Joey Dean Parker both of Marion; two daughters, Carolyn Rogers and Vickie Tipton both of Marion; one sister, Myrtle Helton of Marion; six grandchildren, Timmy, April, Jeremy and Tyler all of Marion, Katie and Laura of Shelby.
Services will be held 3:00 o’clock Sunday, May 4, 2003 at Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church with Rev. Allen and Jackie Early officiating. Burial will follow in McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 at the church.

Mr. Dwight Spurgeon Truett Snipes
Mr. Dwight Spurgeon Truett Snipes, 69, formerly of the Salem Community died Sunday, September 28, 2003 at Broughton Hospital. Dwight had been in poor health for a number of years and had been in the McAlpine Long Term Care. Born March 16, 1934 in Burke County he was the son of the late Reverend Luther E. Snipes and Lillian D. Snipes. A brother Luther E. Snipes, who was killed during the Battle of the Bulge during WW II, preceded him in death.
Mr. Snipes was a member of the Hudson High School graduating class of 1953, attended Gardner Webb College and Clevenger Business School. He had worked for Broyhill Furniture Company in Lenoir and had retired from Henderon Furniture Company. He was a member of the Miller Hill Baptist Church in Lenoir.
He is survived by: brothers Ben H. Snipes and wife Claris, Richard B. Snipes and wife Verlene all of Morganton, David S. Snipes and wife Frances of Central S.C.; sisters Kay S. Lethcoe and husband Charles, Carol S. Peck and husband Steve of Parkersburg W.V.; and a number of nicest and nephews.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at the Mount Home Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Charles Lethcoe, Dwight’s brother-n-law, officiating.
The family will receive friends 10 till 10:30 Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at McAlpine Long Term Care and Ward C and 101 at Broughton Hospital for their kind and compassionate care for Dwight.
