MOORESBORO — Mr. Knox Gettys Mintz, 68, of 371 Beason Road, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Race Path Baptist Church in Six Points with the Rev. John Godfrey officiating. The body may be viewed from 7:30 a.m. to noon on Friday at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside. Burial will be in Camps Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. ‘Bob’ Beason
BOILING SPRINGS — Mr. Robert Hoyle “Bob” Beason, 75, of 215 Wall Ave., died peacefully, Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at his home. Born Oct. 1, 1926, in Boiling Springs, he was preceded in death by his parents, Belton Gibson and Maggie Hamrick Beason, and by three brothers, Carl, Jim and Bill Beason. He was a retired pharmacist who co-owned and operated Boiling Springs Drug Co. for 30 years. He was a 1951 graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s School of Pharmacy. In addition, he was an active lifetime member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church, serving as deacon and as a member of the church choir for more than 50 years. He was a former Boiling Springs Lions Club member and an avid outdoorsman who also enjoyed cooking and swimming. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Iva Jean Kincaid Beason; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and David Starnes of Boiling Springs; a son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Cindy Beason of Hickory; one grandson, Paul Baron; three granddaughters, Laura Beason, Amy Beason and Susanna Starnes; and by one sister, Margaret White of Boiling Springs. A musical memorial service will be today at Boiling Springs Baptist Church at 6:45 p.m. with Dr. Carroll Page officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service in the fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to the “Bob Beason Sacred Scholarship Fund,” which was set up by the members of Boiling Springs Baptist Church as a tribute to Bob Beason’s lifelong love of music. SHELBY — Mrs. Margaret Murry Anthony, 81, of White Oak Manor, formerly of Charles Place, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. Born April 19, 1921, in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late W.T. and Mary Cochran Murry. She was a homemaker and a member of Davidson Memorial Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Anthony; a son, William Donald Hamrick; two daughters, Judy Smith and Pamela Morrow; two brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David C. and Linda G. Hamrick of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Darrel Hollifield and Pat and Barry Linkous, all of Shelby; a sister, Ruby Martin of Shelby; eight grandchildren, Gena Kinsey, Anita Baker, Donna Hollifield and David Sparks, all of Shelby, Kammie Weaver and Brian Hollifield, both of Mooresboro, Scott Hamrick of Kings Mountain and Jo Ann Toney of Columbia, S.C.; and 13 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Clay Barnette Funeral Home with Dr. Bobby Ridge officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery. GROVER — Mr. Edward “Doug” Anthony, 85, of 2214 Brookfield Drive, formerly of Anthony Farm Road, Kings Mountain, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain. Born in Cleveland County, he retired in 1982 as a machinist/mechanic at United Merchants & Farmer. He was a life member of Hoey Memorial United Methodist, where he served in various capacities. He also attended Pleasant Hill and the T.H. Lowery Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Augustus and Sallie Mae Hardin Anthony; his first wife, Fairie Elizabeth Neal Anthony; two brothers, Fred and Carl Anthony; and a sister, Pearl Anthony Sparks. He is survived by his wife, Alda Neal Stroupe Anthony of the home; a daughter and her husband, Willie Anthony and Jack Howard, of Rock Hill, S.C.; a grandson and his wife, Jon and Sherrie Howard of Rock Hill; a granddaughter and her husband, Jennifer Howard and Brian Umbarger of Charlotte; two stepsons and their wives, Howard and Penny Stroup and Neal and Doris Stroup, all of Grover; three stepgranddaughters, Julie Trevenio of Conway, S.C., Melissa Tyndall of Grover and Haley Contreres of Germany; a niece, Virginia Sparks Byers of Shelby; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. HIDDENITE — Mrs. Johana Ann Smith Lackey, 47, of 771 Lackey Mountain Road, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at her home following an extended illness. She was born in Cleveland County, Dec. 15, 1954, daughter of the late R.C. and Minnie Chapman Smith. She was employed with ER Carpenter Co. and was a Baptist. In addition to her parents, a daughter, Jamie Leigh Lackey, preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband, Roger Dale “Possum” Lackey of the home; one son, Eric Roger Lackey of the home; two daughters, Kelly Dale Lackey of the home and Kimberly Dawn Lackey Kennedy of Stony Point; four sisters, Guynell Chapman and Janet Wellman, both of Lawndale, Becky Holcombe of Connelly Springs and Shirleen Hoyle of Morganton; a granddaughter, Katlin Ann Kennedy of Stony Point; and her mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Lackey of Hiddenite. HARRISONBURG, Va. — Mrs. Mary Carolyn Elliott Fox, 67, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Born in Hickory, Mrs. Fox was the daughter of the late Robert William Elliott and Reba Blanton Whistnant Elliott. She received both her undergraduate and master’s degrees from Chapel Hill. She taught junior high school in Burlington, English at Lees McRae College in Banner Elk and English at Central VA Community College in Lynchburg, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Elbert Fox Sr. She is survived by a son, Robert Franklin Keefer of Harrisonburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Alison Elliott and Henry L. Mintz of Polkville; a son an daughter-in-law, Glenn Elbert Fox Jr. and Mechelle J. Fox of Menomonie, Wis. Also she is survived by six grandchildren, Rachel Frances Keefer of Harrisonburg, Karmen Elizabeth Moore, Meganne Sara Abercrombie, Robert Henry Mintz, Mary Rebekah Mintz of Polkville and Bethany Melissa Fox of Menomonie, Wis. In addition, she is survived by an aunt Mary Gordon Elliott of Polkville; a sister, Anne Nixon Elliott of Hickory; and a niece, Katherine Anne Caldwell of Mount Pleasant, S.C. Mary Hamrick
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Mary Olga Watson Hamrick, 76, of U.S. 74 Business East, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. She was a native of the Shiloh community and a lifelong resident of Rutherford County, a daughter of the late Edward Malcom Watson Sr. and Lizzie Mae Abrams Watson, member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, and held many leadership positions in the church. She was a beloved mother and grandmother. After teaching for 44 years in the Rutherford County Schools, Mrs. Hamrick retired and spent 10 years as a volunteer with the McNair Foundation, where she continued to dedicate her life to shaping the hearts and minds of young people. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arbuth Durward Hamrick; and two brothers, Ed Mack Watson and Wallace Watson. Survivors include three daughters, Amy Hamrick Morton of Macon, Ga., Susie Hamrick Jones of Golden Valley and Ava Hamrick Howe of York S.C.; a brother, Floyd Watson of Gaffney, S.C.; two sisters, Doris H. Hardin of the Shiloh community and Opal Packard of Mooresboro; six grandchildren, Shannon Howe Outlaw, Leah Howe, Matthew Newton, Tyler Newton, Loren Jones and Arden Jones; and one great-grandchild, Jacob Costner. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Revs. Michael Sepaugh and Clay Smith officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. FOREST CITY — Mrs. Betty McCurry Godfrey, 72, of 210 Reid St., died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. She was a native of Rutherford County, daughter of the late Clarence H. and Annie Mode McCurry and a retired textile employee. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Godfrey, in June of this year. She is survived by two sons, Charles Ricky Godfrey Jr. of Ellenboro and Mike Godfrey of Clarksville, Ga.; a daughter, Barbara J. Godfrey of Lodi, N.J.; three grandchildren, Stacy Godfrey Kale, Benjamin Godfrey and Brian Godfrey; and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Padgett and King Mortuary with the Rev. Todd Gossett officiating. Interment will follow in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. ‘Frank’ Hamrick
SHELBY — Mr. Franklin Adair “Frank” Hamrick III, 64, of 511 Franklin Ave., joined the Church Triumphant on July 8, 2002, from his home. Mr. Hamrick was a member of Central United Methodist Church. For the last six years of his life he drove a van for TACC. He loved driving the van for his special group of people. He was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin A. and Sarah Mae “Sadie” Beverly Hamrick. He is survived by his loving wife and companion, Margaret Magness Hamrick; a loving mother-in-law, Ernestine Magness of the home; a brother-in-law and his wife, Charlie and Robin Magness of Boiling Springs; a sister-in-law and her husband, Rachel and Ray Arndt of Shelby; one aunt, Myra Padgett of Clayton, Ga.; and by nephews, nieces and cousins. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Sunset Cemetery with Drs. John Boggs and Joe Reeves officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Palmer Mortuary. SHELBY — Mr. Carroll Alexander Houck, 84, of 4003 Pleasant Grove Church Road, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at his home. Born Aug. 4, 1917, in Burke County, he was the son of the late Edward and Maudie Houck. He retired as a shipyard welder. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vernie Mae Watts Houck; and a great-granddaughter, Angela Dawn Closky. He is survived by three sons, James Watts of Shelby, Lonnie Houck of Vale and Bobby Houck of Lincolnton; three daughters, Carolyn Smith of Fallston, Patricia Armstrong of Connelly Springs and Lisa Houck of Shelby; 10 grandchildren, Angela Closky, Jennifer Bennett, Stephanie Purnell, Janice Watts, Shannon Armstrong, Christina Purnell, Alex Houck, Dylan Morrison, Sierra Newton and Travis Watts; a stepgranddaughter, Tammy Dellinger; and eight great-grandchildren.
