Mary Gleaves
SHELBY — Mrs. Mary Lee Gleaves, 90, of 2407 Elizabeth Ave., died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. Born July 9, 1912, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late James Mills Borders and Julia Roberts Borders. A retired schoolteacher, she taught in Cleveland County and Shelby City schools for 41 years. She attended schools in Cleveland County and the former Cleveland High School in Shelby. She graduated from Allen School in Asheville and Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte. She was a member of Durham United Methodist Church, where she was active in the United Methodist Women, a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Administrative Council and held many other positions in the church. She was a member of the Shelby Negro Woman’s Club, Green Thumb Garden Club, Round Dozen Book Club and The Bridgettes Bridge Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Vontilzer Gleaves; and four brothers, Napoleon Borders, Lacole Borders, Maurice and Mills Borders. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne and James Beam of Shelby and Francelia and Clayton McKindra of Columbia, Md.; six sisters, Geneva Ramseur of Matthew’s, Oretha Bridges and Shirley Borders of Charlotte, Willette Tyler of West Hampton, N.J., Corene Freeman of Shelby and Gwendolyn Robinson of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Andrew Borders and O.J. Borders of Shelby; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Durham United Methodist Church. GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mrs. Lillian Thomas Thompson, 73, of 1006 Cliffside Highway, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at her home. A graveside service was Thursday at Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery in Cowpens, with the Revs. Anthony Moore and Max Benshoof officiating.
Peggy C. Hamrick
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Mrs. Peggy Cater Hamrick, 72, of 1080 Andrews Farm Road, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Easley, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Charles Edward and Tecora Rice Cater and the wife of James Lehman Hamrick Sr. She was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Advent. Mrs. Hamrick was active in many organizations in Spartanburg and Greenville. A 1950 graduate of Furman University, she remained involved in university life and was a member of the Richard Furman Society, the Furman Partners Scholarship Program and the Furman Fund Council. Mrs. Hamrick was part of the Guild of St. Francis and St. Clare at The Episcopal Church of the Advent and volunteered at St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic. She was a past board member of the YMCA of Spartanburg and supported the YMCA’s Black Achievers program. Mrs. Hamrick also was a past board member of the Baptist Courier. She was a volunteer for many years with the American Cancer Society and Mobile Meals of Spartanburg. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Hamrick and Kevin Boyer of Raleigh; sisters and brothers-in-law, Frankie and Jack Greever of Coppell, Texas, Lynn and Bob Thomas of Apache, Okla., and Mayme Hunt of Vero Beach, Fla.; and granddaughters, Anna Caroline Boyer and Maria Kathleen Boyer of Raleigh. Mrs. Hamrick was predeceased by her son, James Lehman Hamrick Jr. A memorial service will be today at 11 a.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Advent, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Clay H. Turner. A private interment will precede the service. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service. The family is at the home. GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mrs. Kim Plumley Allison, 45, of 100 Pinewood Drive, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, S.C. LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Helen Bracey Wilson, 63, of 1278 Springdale Park Drive, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Ebony & White’s Funeral Service, with the Rev. Nathaniel Craig officiating. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. BESSEMER CITY — Ms. Caldonia H. Camp, 77, of 331 Payne Road, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at her home. She was born to the late Nathan and Willis Bell Hill. She was a member of St. James Baptist Church in Bessemer City and the Golden Year Seniors Group. Her previous employment includes Homelite, Rauch Industries and Dannoco. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Camp. She is survived by one daughter, Jean C. Floyd and husband, Mitchell, of Syracuse, N.Y.; two sons, James Douglas Camp of Bessemer City and Larry “Donnell” Camp of Hartsville, S.C.; three sisters, Margaret H. Woods of Bessemer City, Gladys H. Watson of Jamaica, N.Y. and Naomi H. Thomas of Greensboro; one brother, John Henry Benson of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. James Baptist Church, with the Rev. A. Wayne Love officiating. Burial will follow in Kelly’s Chapel Cemetery. William Mitchell
SHELBY — Mr. William O. Mitchell, 67, of 1319 South Lafayette St., died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Lonnie Mitchell and Ray Wilson Mitchell. He retired as letter carrier from the U.S. Postal Service and First National Bank. He was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church and Lure Beagle Club. He served in the Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert E. Mitchell. He is survived by his wife, Betty Mitchell of the home; a son, William O. Mitchell Jr. of Shelby; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Ralph Corbett of Simpsonville, S.C.; and a sister-in-law, Betty B. Mitchell of Burlington. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Allen Huff officiating. Interment will be private in Cleveland Memorial Park. Charles Blalock Sr.
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Charles Edward Blalock Sr., 92, of 719 Bethlehem Church Road, died Thursday, July 10, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. He was a native of Cleveland County, son of the late Lawson Goforth and Fairy Whisnant Blalock. He was former owner and operator of Blalock’s Grocery in Kings Mountain. He was the oldest member of First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, and a former member of the Lion’s Club and the Kings Mountain Merchants Association. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Miller Blalock; his second wife, Nora Lowe Blalock; a daughter, Joe Ann Crawford; five brothers; and three sisters. He is survived by a son, Charles E. “Sonny” Blalock Jr. of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Sybil B. Hamrick and husband, Lawrence, and Freida B. Grayson, all of Kings Mountain; a brother, Frank Blalock of Kings Mountain; a sister, Louise Kale of Kings Mountain; 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, with the Revs. John Sloan, Russell Fitts, and Robert Eng officiating. Interment will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Willie Ussery
HICKORY — Mr. Willie Jeff Ussery, 84, of 837 F. Ave., S.E., died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Catawba Valley Medical Center after a lingering illness. Born Oct. 2, 1917, in Jones County, Ga., he was a son of the late Primius and Kenny Trimble Ussery. He retired from Daimler Chrysler Corp., and was a member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church. He served in the Army during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Ussery; four brothers, Robert Ussery, Earnest Ussery, Anderson Ussery, Primius Ussery; and two sisters, Katie Barron and Nancy Gaston. He is survived by a sister, Vera Carey of Hickory; three special nieces, Edith Sue Lawrence and Annie Mae Ussery, both of Lawndale and Linda Shuford of Hickory; three special nephews, Willie Gene Ussery and Timothy Shuford, both of Hickory and Arthur Lee Ussery of Lawndale; a special friend, Susie Walton of Lawndale; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Lawndale, with Elder James Benton officiating. Burial will be in Detroit Memorial Park, 13 Mile & Ryan Roads, Detroit, Mich. The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service. Glenn Withrow
SHELBY — Mr. Glenn Melvin Withrow, 61, of 796 Kenmore St., passed away Thursday, July 11, 2002, in the comfort of his home. He as born June 18, 1941, in Cleveland County to the late Sherman and Amanda Houser Withrow. Glenn was self-employed as a tile setter for more than 30 years. He was a veteran of the Army where he served as a paramedic. As a member of Durham United Methodist Church, Glenn served as a trustee, assistant Sunday school teacher and as a member of the Men’s Celestial and Gospel Choirs. He was a former member of Eskridge Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, president of the Royal Ambassadors Youth Group and Laymen’s League. Glenn also was a member of the Gospel and Senior Choirs. In 1993, he was honored as Citizen of the Year by the Shelby Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Glenn was preceded in death by his first wife, Vernelle Scott Withrow; three brothers, Henry, Van and Zan Withrow; and one sister, Minnie Bell. He is survived by his wife, Anita Blythe Withrow of the home; two sons, Carlos “Ricky” Scott and his wife, Debra C. Scott, and Arlos “Randy” Scott and his wife, Schrell S. Scott, all of Shelby; two daughters, Aleta Withrow Howell and her husband, Kevin D. Howell of Raleigh, and Gloria Withrow Benjamin and her husband, Jonathan Benjamin, of Shelby; four brothers, Clarence S. Withrow of Kingstown, Carl Lee Withrow and his wife, Bernice, of Shelby and Joseph Hunt and his wife, Mary, of Charlotte; three sisters, Frances Withrow, Comilla Sinkler and Helen Love and her husband, Carl T. Love, all of Shelby; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Rosie and Emily Withrow; one aunt, Beatrice Lockett; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Durham United Methodist Church, with Pastor Roger Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorials Lawns. ‘Dick’ Walker
SHELBY — Mr. Richard Hugh “Dick” Walker, 73, of 403 Woodside Drive, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Richard Walker and Verna Mae Tiddy Walker. He retired as auditor from First National Bank. He was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church and a graduate of Shelby High School and Presbyterian College. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Atlantic Theater. Richard H. Walker began his service at First National Bank on Feb. 15, 1949, as a bookkeeper. He left to serve a term in the United States Navy. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to the bank as a teller. Later, he worked in the audit department of the bank, becoming the bank’s internal auditor. He retired from the bank in December 1994, after 45 years of service. Richard contributed to the bank by helping to form many of the policies of the bank. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha McClean Walker; and a daughter, Susan Walker Cook. He is survived by his wife, Mavis Reynolds Walker of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Kevin Schronce of Lincolnton; two grandsons, Michael Cook and Andy Cook and his wife, Kelly, all of Shelby; a great-granddaughter, Hannah Cook; and an uncle, Eugene Tiddy of Gastonia. A memorial service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at John Knox Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bill Troutman officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the church.
