CASAR — Mrs. Avis McNeilly Costner, 68, of 400 Wes Cook Road, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. Born March 18, 1934, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late William Avery and Lottie White McNeilly. She was a registered nurse and retired from Broughton Hospital. She belonged to St. Paul Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Gerald “Bunny” Costner of the home; a daughter Kathy Williams of Casar and her friend, Bobby Davis, of Vale; a daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Keith Brackett of Casar; two sisters, Mary Ledford of Casar and Evelyn DuBose of Lawndale; three granddaughters, Krystal Taylor, Kim Roberts and Susan Elliott; and three great-grandchildren, Amber and Steven Taylor and Jade Williams. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church, with Drs. Ernest Speagle and Horace DuBose III officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice at Wendover, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

Beulah Rudisill
SHELBY — Mrs. Beulah Huskey Rudisill, 81, of 820 Earl Road, departed this life on Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. Born on Feb. 13, 1921, in Cherokee County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Larkin and Edna Hopper Huskey. She was a faithful member of New Covenant Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Monique Rudisill; two sons, Grady and Albert Rudisill; and one daughter, Gwendolyn “Gwen” Smith; five brothers and one sister. She leaves to cherish her loving memories five daughters and three sons-in-law, Lula Ramseur of Grover, Gennie Rudisill, Rosie Lee Archie and Linda and JC Cannon, all of Shelby, Verleana and Samuel Woods of Asheville and Benny Smith of Grover; four sons and three daughters-in-law Clarence Rudisill and Frank and Becky Rudisill of Shelby, Monroe and Valerie Rudisill of Gastonia and Andrew and Karen Rudisill of Dallas; 38 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The funeral is today at 2:30 p.m. at Bethlehem Temple Holiness Church, with the Rev. John Grant officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church and at other times at the home of Lula Ramseur, 122 Temple Drive, Grover. Genesis Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

CROUSE — Mrs. Helen Mae Anthony Gray, 70, of 244 Hephzibah Church Road, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at her home. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Anthony Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. Dennis Bean and Keith Love officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home in Cherryville.

CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Karl Alexander Lambert, 55, of 204 Dale Drive, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home.

RUTHERFORDTON — Mrs. Eva Mae Sumner Walker, 81, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at McMahan’s Funeral Home.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. — Mr. William Preston Marshall, 43, of 3129 Union Church Road, formerly of Rutherford County, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital. A memorial service will be held today at 4 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, Forest City. Crowe Funeral Home of Rutherfordton is in charge of arrangements.

Billy Powell
SHELBY — Mr. Billy Gene Powell, 63, of 112 Garrett Drive, died on his birthday, Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. A native of Cleveland County, he was a retired electrician from Davis and Daniel Electrical Contractors, a member of Putnam Memorial Baptist Church and he was an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Luther and Fonnie Dysart Powell; a brother, Andrew Jackson Powell; and a sister, Mattie Powell Bumgardner. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara Fish Powell of the home; a son, Ricky Gene Powell of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori Powell and Robby Walters of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Joann Powell and Rodney Ricks of Gastonia; and three grandchildren, William, Samuel and Joseph Walters. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Rev. Bryan Glisson officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for two hours before the funeral. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

BOILING SPRINGS — Mrs. Julia Ruppe McSwain, 84, of 1114 Hillside St., died Friday, July 12, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cherokee County, S.C., she was a homemaker, retired with L&K Knit and a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church, where she was in the Revels Senior Choir and Mothers Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Thomas McSwain; her parents, Virgil Lewis and Ada Blanton Ruppe; a brother, Delmas Lewis Ruppe; a sister, Eva Ruppe Gosey; and a grandson, Larry Franklin Davis. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Kaye McSwain and Larry and Brenda McSwain, all of Boiling Springs; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Kay Anthony and Jim Ledford of Boiling Springs, Jean and Max Philbeck of Ellenboro, Dot and Robert Davis of Shelby and Meria White of Kings Mountain; a brother, Winfred Ruppe of Gaffney, S.C.; a sister, Geneva McKinney of Mayo, S.C.; 14 grandchildren, Julia P. Hudson, Samantha P. Goode, Lynn A. Bowling, Todd Anthony, Samuel R. Davis, Angie W. Richardson, Pam W. Jackson, Darrell McSwain, Ritchie McSwain, Brooke McSwain, Mark McSwain, Kevin McSwain, Larry “Dinky” McSwain and DeeDee M. Rose; 21 great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild. The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. at Flint Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Keith Dixon and Ed Sessom officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family received friends Saturday at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and other times will be at the family headquarters, 111 Anthony Lake Drive. Miles Dahlen
CORNELIUS — Mr. Miles Boyne Dahlen, 72, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at University Hospital. Born Oct. 20, 1929, in Wilmington, Del., he was a graduate of Dupont High School, class of 1947, and the University of Pennsylvania. He retired from DuPont Corp. and was later employed with Radio Shack in Cornelius. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary on Lake Norman for many years, and was active in the Lake Norman and Wilmington, Del., Power Squadron. He was also an amateur radio operator, call sign KE4LQM. He was preceded in death by his parents, Miles A. and Marion Boyne Dahlen. He is survived by his wife, Norah Barron Dahlen; four sons, Glenn Dahlen of Shelby, John Dahlen of Anchorage, Alaska, Paul Dahlen of Claiborne, Md., and Lee Dahlen, of Iron Station; a brother, Dean Dahlen of LaMesa, Calif.; six grandchildren, Michelle Threlkeld, Heather, Erin, Jeremiah, Patrick and Kelsea. The memorial service will be today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Raymer Funeral Home in Huntersville with David M. Stewart officiating. The family will receive friends after the service. Memorials may be made to Foundation for the Carolinas, Cornelius Library Endowment Fund, 217 S. Tryon St., Charlotte, NC 28202; or The American Lung Association, 1740 Broadway, New York City, NY 10019.

CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Lummia J. “Lum” Davis, 80, of 323 Anthony Grove Church Road, Crouse, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Anthony Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Dennis Beam, Lonnie Herron, William S. Green and W.G. Horne officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Carpenters Funeral Home tonight from 6 to 8.

RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Carl Edward Culbertson, 77, of 691 Whitesides Road, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at his residence. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Tabernacle Freewill Baptist Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Ronald Marlowe officiating. Burial will be in Montford Cove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the church. McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffisde, is in charge of arrangements.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. James Edward Dee, 66, of 312 Compact School Road, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at the Kings Mountain Hospital. The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Mount Olive Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church three hours before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. J.W. Gill and Sons is in charge of arrangements.

CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Louise Tallent Brown, 86, of 7311 Flay Road, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at Carolina Care, after a brief illness. She was born in Lincoln County, March 28, 1916, the oldest daughter of Doc Millard and Cleo Pendleton Tallent. Her husband Clyde Lafayette Brown, died in 1992. She owned and operated Louise’s Beauty Shop, Cherryville, and was an active member of Bess Chapel United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Dwight Tallent, B.L. Tallent and Gene Tallent. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Clyde T. and Sissy Brown of Lawndale; a grandson and wife, Brent and Trina Brown of Cherryville; a granddaughter and husband, Nikki and Zack Snead of Columbia, S.C.; a great-grandson, Alexander Brown of Cherryville; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Dean and Sue Tallent of Vale, Max and Sue Tallent of St. John’s Island, S.C., and Catherine Tallent of Vale; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Edith and Carl Stevens of Archdale and Pansy A. Ritchie of Crouse. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church with the Revs. Randi Godfrey and George Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home and at other times at the home. He was the son of Kelly Raynard Chambers and the late Levetta Walls Banks and a native of Cleveland County. He was a former student and football player at Kings Mountain and Crest high schools. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Carolyn Walls Thompson. He is survived by his father and stepmother, Kelly and Willie Ann Chambers of Shelby; his foster parents, Marcus and Sonya Borders of Shelby; his stepmother, Marylin Chambers of the home; one son JaQuarius Wells of Shelby; one brother, Raynard Chambers of Shelby; two sisters, Lavanda Renee Walls and Melinda Ann Chambers, both of Shelby; his grandmother, Haley Jane Chambers of Shelby; his great-grandmother, Lucy Bell Walls of Shelby; five stepsisters and stepbrothers, Kwana, Latasha, Jaenata and Travis Black and Carissa Littlejohn, all of Shelby; an aunt, Lavondra “Fee Fee” Hill of Lawndale; a great-aunt, Alice Borders of Shelby; and many other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Faith Harvest Church with Bishop Randy Borders officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. Born in Cleveland County, she was a homemaker and member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Gilford Dycus and Irene Francis Dycus; and a sister, Frances Dycus. She is survived by her husband, Buford Cody of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Cindy and Keith Edwards and Carolyn Cody, all of Shelby; a granddaughter, Dixie Edwards of Shelby; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Burl Dycus, Donald and Wray Dycus and David Dycus, all of Shelby; and a sister, Rachel Dycus of Shelby. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Rev. Neal Efird officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park in Fallston.
