Bobby Brooks
SHELBY — Mr. Bobby Brooks, 64, of 1454 Williamson Road, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late James and Annie Degree Brooks. He was a member of Golden Ridge Baptist Church and a former employee of Asphalt Paving in Shelby. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Coleman Brooks. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Boykins Brooks; two sons and daughters-in-law, Sherman and Angela Brooks of the home and Carl D. and Phyllis Brooks of Lawndale; two brothers and a sister-in-law, James Avery and Julia Brooks of Shelby and Walt Brooks of Hickory; a sister and brother-in-law, Hess B. and James Ikard of Hickory; an aunt, Pearl Brooks of Shelby; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Golden Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Martin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

John Styers
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. John J. Styers, 81, of McIntrye Road, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at home. He was the last living child of the late William Pressley and Gertrude Houser Styers of Cherryville. He was married to the late Margaret Jones Styers of Shelby. He served in the Navy on the destroyer U.S.S. Cunningham in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a retired building contractor in Shelby for many years and a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Styers; and three sisters, Lucille Wallace, Edith Lovelace and Maxine Hildebran. He is survived by two daughters, Beverly Styers of Shelby and Nancy Styers Mills of Greenville, S.C.; a grandson, Billy John Mills of Huntersville; a great-grandson, Ash Merele Mills of Huntersville; and two great-granddaughters, Kathryn Elizabeth Mills and Karrie Allison Mills of Murfreesboro, Tenn. A graveside service will be today at 11 a.m. in Sunset Cemetery in Shelby with Dr. Luke Harkey officiating. Visitation was Wednesday at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Shelby Presbyterian Church, 226 E. Graham St., Shelby, NC 28150.

Nelson Toney
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Nelson Getter Toney, 89, of 410 N. Flint St., Lincolnton, formerly of Kings Mountain, where he lived most of his life, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Lincoln Medical Center in Lincolnton. Born in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Lester and Vernie Price Toney and husband of the late Zettie Propst Toney. He was also preceded in death by Nelson Toney Jr., Madge Jewel Toney, and Helen Toney Marlow. He was a retired foreman for Neal Hawkins Grading and Paving Co. of Gastonia after 25 years of service. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Cherryville. He is survived by four sons, Donald Toney and wife, Virginia, of Gastonia, Paul Toney of Bessemer City, Roy Lee Toney and wife, Mary Jane, of Cherryville and Roger Toney of Blacksburg, S.C.; three daughters and a son-in-law, Hazel Miller and Carol Taylor, both of Lincolnton, and Faithel and Thomas DeBois of Lake Wylie, S.C.; a sister, Lillie Mae Price of Shelby; 24 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene in Cherryville with the Rev. William Eric Sherwood officiating. Interment will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home and at other times at the home of the granddaughter, Cynthia Tate, 5921 Dallas-Cherryville Highway.

Pansy Turner
SHELBY — Mrs. Pansy Flay Hardin Turner, 104, went peacefully to sleep at 8:20 p.m. on Monday, July 15, 2002, at Century Care, 1101 N. Morgan St., Shelby. She would have been 105 years old on July 30, 2002. She was a lifetime member of Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late Joshua Augustus Hardin and Hethern Elizabeth Hamrick Hardin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter B. Turner; a sister, Mary Hardin McIntyre; two brothers, Yates Hardin and Joe Hardin; two nephews, Frank McIntyre and Dewey McIntyre; a grandson, Ed Hamrick and a niece, Thelma McIntyre Gold. She is survived by a son, John Gene Turner and wife, Delores, of Shelby; a stepson, Walter B. Turner and wife, Betty, of Shelby; two granddaughters, Vickie Turner Propst and husband, Tom, of Simpsonville, S.C., Susan Hamrick Floyd and husband, Mark, of Polkville; six grandsons, John Gene Turner Jr. of Spartanburg, S.C., Steve Hamrick of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Mark Hamrick and wife, Gale, Tom Hamrick and friend, Liz Thomas, all of Shelby, Sonny Turner of Raleigh and Judson Turner and wife, Edna, of Florida; eight great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; five nieces, Madge Turner, Helen Ellis, Ray Whitaker, Margaret Brumley and Jackie Greene; three nephews, Gus McIntyre, Blaine McIntyre and Howard Hardin; and by a number of great-nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church with the Revs. Billy Towery and Mike Shuford officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Palmer Mortuary and at other times at the home of her son, Gene Turner, 11 Heritage Lane, Shelby. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her church, Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1073, Shelby, NC 28151; or to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

SHELBY — Mr. Fred Lewis Hastings, 96, of 401 N. Morgan St., White Oak Manor, formerly of West Warren Manor, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Shelby. Born Oct. 14, 1905, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Martin Zero and Cleo Haynes Hastings. He retired from Lily Mills Co. He was a member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Chancel Choir for 65 years and Lily Mill Old Timers Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Peters Hastings; and a son, Gene Hastings. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Hal and Betty Hastings of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Dick Francis of Shelby; two grandsons, Eddie Hastings and his wife, Christi, of Clearwater, Fla., and Marty Hastings of Jacksonville, Fla.; two special nieces, Louise Pendleton of Shelby and Helen Biggs of St. Petersburg, Fla.; caretaker and great-niece, Kay-Kay Pendleton of Shelby; a daughter-in-law, Marjorie Ellisor of Jacksonville, Fla.; and by a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Lafayette Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gervase Hitch officiating. The body will be placed in the church from 1:30 to 2:30 before the service. Interment will be in Zoar Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. before the service in the church parlor. Gwyndola Byars
SHELBY — Mrs. Gwyndola Ervin Byars, 75, of Flint Hill Church Road, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Willow Ridge in Rutherfordton. Born in Fort Mill, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Black Ervin. She was a retired nurses assistant, working at Royster Memorial Hospital and Crawley Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church and was the widow of Ernest Ray Byars. She is survived by one son, Steve Byars of Ellenboro. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Flint Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Keith Dixon and Ed Sessoms officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. The family is at the home of the son, Steve Byars, 677 E. U.S. 74 Business, Ellenboro. McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home of Cliffside is in charge of arrangements.

William Morris Jr.
RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. William Morris Jr., 73, of 732 Moss Road, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at New Salem Christian Methodist Episcopal Church with Dr. Paul Miller and the Revs. C.D. Timpson and James Lowrance officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Home. Hal Queen
HICKORY — Mr. Hal E. Queen, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at his residence. Born July 18, 1917, in Morganton, he was the son of the late Edward Alexander “Pete” Queen and Leola Hull Queen. A longtime member of First United Methodist Church, he served as president of the Men’s Bible class for five years. He served in the Air National Guard and was sent to Pearl Harbor after the bombing. Hal was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose for 41 years. A jack of all trades and master of many, he owned and operated a sign company and a restaurant, Hal’s Burger Barn. He was a radio announcer for many years, beginning in 1948 at WHKY in Hickory. Also in Morganton-WMNC, Lenoir-WJRI, Spartanburg-WSPA, Concord-WORD, Valdese-WUIV, Icard and Statesville. An avid golfer, played many instruments, always had a joke to tell and enjoyed doing magic tricks. Most of all, he loved being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His love for his family was endless and unconditional. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Rodney Harold; a brother, Earl Queen; and a sister, Mirene Q. Stamey. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Howell Queen; a daughter and son-in-law, “ChiChi” and Bill Fourtellot of Weddington; a son and daughter-in-law, Hal and Rita Queen of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren, Billy and Dina Fourtellot of Greensboro, Rich and Ellen Fourtellot of Raleigh, Beth T. Diaferia, Hal and Leslie Queen, Rebekah, Emily, Daniel, Amy, David and Laura Queen, all of Charlotte; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Pearl Q. Boles of Hickory and Mae Q. and Ullysses Grisette of Valdese. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Drs. George Freeman and John Christy and the Rev. Paul Starnes officiating. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cherryville. Pallbearers are Mr. Queen’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nephews. Honorary pallbearers are the Men’s Bible Class First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory. ‘Zip’ Hardin
GROVER — Mrs. Zalia “Zip” Sheppard Hardin, 99, of 202 Walnut St., died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby. She was a native of Cleveland County, and daughter of the late Alex and Maggie Randall Sheppard. She was wife of the late Melvin C. Hardin. She was a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church in Grover. She was former lunch room manager of Grover High School and correspondent for the Cleveland Times for 30 years. She was also employed with Barium Springs Children’s Home. She is survived by a son, Marvin L. “Buck” Hardin and wife, Sybil, of Newport Richey, Fla.; two daughters, Marjorie H. Field and husband, Ben, of Grover and Lola Faye Craig of Florence, S.C.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Blacksburg, S.C., with Dr. Tony Fulbright officiating. The family will receive friends after the service. Memorials may be made to Shiloh Presbyterian Church, 307 Cleveland Ave., Grover, NC; or to Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, 1404 N. Lafayette St., Shelby, NC 28150. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Gregory “Greg” Allen Painter, 47, of 110-2 Carlin Drive, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital in Kings Mountain. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at David Baptist Church with the Revs. Jody Griffin and Gary Crowder officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. FOREST CITY — Mr. William “Bill” Brock, 86, of 1131 Bethany Church Road, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at his home. A memorial service will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at Word of Faith Fellowship with Sam and Jane Whaley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Johnnie Walker Jr.
CASAR — Mr. Johnnie Roscoe Walker Jr., 64, of 6403 Casar Road, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at White Oak Manor. Born July 22, 1937, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Johnnie Roscoe Walker Sr. and Vernie Cook Walker. He retired from textiles and furniture manufacturing. He was a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Buren and Hazel Walker. He is survived by two nephews and their wives, Wayne and Kathy Walker of Lawndale and Larry and Eva Walker of Casar; a niece, Kay Walker of Cherryville; and two sisters-in-law, Dona Walker and Helen Walker, both of Casar. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Olive Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Terrill Crump officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Stamey Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Wayne and Kathy Walker, 1605 W. Stagecoach Trail, Lawndale.

Karl Lambert
CHERRYVILLE — Mr. Karl Alexander Lambert, 55, of 204 Dale Drive, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia. Born April 18, 1947, in Burke County, he was employed by Newark Electronics in Gaffney, S.C., as senior computer analyst. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Morganton, member of the Amateur Radio Club in Gastonia, where he served as former president and his call sign was WB4UDS. He was member of the RC Flying Club of Shelby, where he flew airplanes and helicopters. He also had his private pilot license, member of the National Rifle Association. He also was a professor at Western Piedmont Community College and UNC-Chapel Hill. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Lail Lambert of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Cindy Lambert of Fallston; a daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Doug Smith of Shelby; his parents, Jack Alexander Lambert and Mary Alice Morris Lambert, both of Drexel; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Donna Lambert of Morganton, Jack Lambert of Albertville, Minn., and John and Christine Lambert of Drexel; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Anne and Danny Ritchie of Drexel; two grandchildren, Baylen and Isaac Smith of Shelby; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ernest Richards officiating. There will be a private burial. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his daughter, Angela Smith, 1433 Costner Road, Shelby. Christopher Day
RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Christopher Ernest Day, 23, of 224 Fleming Drive, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at Tarpon Springs, Fla. Born Nov. 28, 1978, a native of Covington, Va., he was enrolled at Asheville-Buncomb Tech Culinary School. He attended Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Shelby and employed by Wal-Mart of Forest City. He is survived by his father, James Day of Gastonia; his mother and stepfather, Patricia and Donald Margarite of Rutherfordton; and two brothers, Brian Day of Mooresboro and David Day of Gastonia. The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Bill’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

PACOLET, S.C. — Mr. James Howard Lee, 62, of 129 R.S. Burns Drive, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. A gathering of friends and family members will be held today at 4 p.m. at Hammett’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Spartanburg, S.C. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O.
