EAST ORANGE, N.J. — Mr. David Lloyd Cornwell, 77, of 530 N. Maple Ave., died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at East Orange General Hospital. The funeral will be Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence Roseboro officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

SHELBY — Mrs. Vera Lee Hamrick Dellinger, 80, of Brian Center of Lincolnton, formerly of Thompson Street, Shelby, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, July 19, 2002, at Brian Center in Lincolnton. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Sunie Mae Hutchins Hamrick. She was a former employee of Medical Arts Pharmacy and retired from Eckerd Drugs. She was a lifetime member of Calvary Baptist Church, former Sunday school teacher, Y.W.A. leader and member of Happy Hearts and Jewell Grigg Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stough Dellinger; a special son-in-law, Ray Walker; a brother, Dick Hamrick; and three sisters, Verner Hensley, Hesper Gamble and Lenith Jones. She is survived by a daughter, Fran Walker of Denver, N.C.; two sons, Ralph Dellinger and wife, Carolyn, and Charles Dellinger and wife, Vickie, all of Shelby; four sisters-in-law, Ruth Hoyle, Etta Hamilton, Aileen Lagana, all of Shelby, and Mozelle Devine of Fallston; eight grandchildren, Mike Dellinger, Mark Dellinger, Neal Walker, Kelly Dellinger, Steve Dellinger, Lori Wesson, Anita Sain and Shawn Dellinger; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with the Revs. Dan Wallace and Trey Gilliam officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

OWENSBORO, Ky. — Mrs. Abbie Miller Mitchell, 94, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Leisure Years Nursing Home in Owensboro. The funeral was Monday at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel. Brooks Piercy Jr.
CORNELIUS — Mr. Brooks Ervin Piercy Jr., 61, of 7501 Norman Island Drive, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at his home. He was born Aug. 13, 1940, in Cleveland County, he was a son of Brooks Ervin Piercy Sr. and Vernie Cabaniss of Boiling Springs. He was a graduate of Clemson University and Appalachian State University. He was a retired Vocational Agriculture teacher and later retired from Lowe’s Corp. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Kathryn MacKnight Piercy of the home; two daughters, Lisa Anne Piercy and her husband, Jim Johnson, of Raleigh and Pamela Elizabeth Piercy of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; and a son, Charles Ervin Piercy and his wife, Laura, of Apex. He is also survived by his wife’s three daughters, Kathy Doub of Fairfax, Va., Carol Kelly and husband, Brent, of New Albany, Ohio, and Margie Fitzgerald and her husband, Kent, of Chantilly, Va., and by his wife’s grandchildren, Brian, Dillon, Kacie, Kristina, Cole and Brooke. A celebration of Brooks’ life will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Raymer Funeral Home, 16901 Old Statesville Road in Huntersville. SHELBY — Mr. Carl Franklin Jones, 72, of 1546 Spangler Drive, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Bunyan Jones and Elva Barnett Jones. He retired from Southco Industry, formerly Goforth Brothers, as a draftsman. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen Harrill; and two brothers, Joseph Carson Jones and Alvie P. Jones. He is survived by his wife, Martha H. Jones of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael C. and Denise Jones of Shelby; a grandson, Christopher Jones of Shelby; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lib and J.L. McSwain and Kay and Howard Kale Jr., all of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Eunie Green Jones of Boiling Springs; and by several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Blake Hooks officiating. GROVER — Vivian MacKinzie Surratt, the six-month-old daughter of Stoney and Tammy Ross Surratt, of 102 Persimmon Drive, Apartment C, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at home. She was preceded in death by her paternal great-grandparents, Gertrude and Dakota Surratt and Henry and Annie Bell Abraham; maternal great-grandparents, Neach and Gertrude Wilson Little and Burt Ross; and a special aunt, Vivian Ross Knox. In addition to her parents, she leaves to cherish fond memories a sister, Sadé Smith; paternal grandparents, E.L. and Ruby Abraham Surratt of Shelby; maternal grandparents, J.R. and Lena Little Ross of Shelby; maternal-great-grandmother, Dora Johnson Ross of Shelby; five aunts and uncles, Teresa Ross and Kenny Watson, Darlene Ross and James Epps, all of Kings Mountain, Pattie Surrat and the Rev. COLUMBIA, S.C. — Mrs. Dallas “Dale” Garner, 69, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002. Born in Pope County, she was a daughter of the late John C. and Emily Pritchard. She was the widow of the Rev. Billy Joe Garner, member of Bayview Baptist Church and Order of Eastern Star, White Shrine. Survivors are a son, Terry Wayne Garner of Columbia; two daughters, Crystal Garner Huggins and Jodi Garner, both of Columbia; two grandchildren, April and T.W. Garner; two sisters, Shirley Fox of Shelby and Gail Matthews of Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Doris Garner; two brothers, Johnny Pritchard of West Columbia and Jim C. Pritchard of Harlem, Ga. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Davis officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Gardens of Columbia. SHELBY — Mr. George B. Gosey, 67, of 1114 Hendrick Lake Road, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Autumn Care of Forest City. A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Edgar Eulus and Pearl Hamrick Gosey. He was an auto body repairman and member of Goodes Creek Baptist Church. He is survived by three sons, Dwight Gosey of Harris, Daryal Gosey of Bostic and Scott Deal of Shelby; a daughter, Regina Fox of Forest City; two brothers, Charles Gosey of Forest City and Joe Gosey of Bostic; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Goodes Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Cecil Lovelace and Fay Walker officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Anniel Mickles
GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mrs. Anniel Mickles, 74, of 621 Broad St., died Monday afternoon, July 15, 2002, at 2:25 p.m. at the Peachtree Centre in Gaffney. A native of Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late Dovie Lattimore and the widow of Deacon Odell Mickles Sr. She was a member Mikes Creek Baptist Church and served as a deaconess, member of the choir, The Missionary, the Pastor Aid Club and the Bible Class and was a Sunday school teacher. She is survived by two daughters, Arnita M. Singleton of Clinton, Md. and Annie Carol Mack of Blacksburg, S.C.; three sons, James O. Mickles of Shelby, Eddie Dean Mickles of the home and Odell Mickles Jr. of Gaffney; three sisters, Willie Mae Dowdle, Julia Dowdle and Lois Peeks of Gaffney; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Mikes Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Kerwin Wray, Sue Mannings, Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr. and Pastor Darin G. Freeman officiating. William Harmon
SHELBY — Mr. William E. Harmon, 72, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002. Mr. Harmon was born Jan. 3, 1930, the son of Walter Durham and Sarah Hamell Harmon. He was pre-deceased by his father as a youngster; mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Ben F. Beam; brother Walter D. Harmon Jr.; and sister, Margaret Harmon. He was a graduate of Gardner-Webb College, and retired from Sara Lee Corp. He is survived by his wife, Peggy, of the home; sons, Brett Harmon of Conover, Todd Harmon of Stokesdale and Eddie Harmon of Concord; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Harrill of Clearwater, Fla., and Mary Ann and Palmer Huffstetler of Cherryville. A graveside service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 at Forbis & Dick Guilford Chapel, 5926 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro.

Hal Queen
HICKORY — Mr. Hal E. Queen, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at his residence. Born July 18, 1917, in Morganton, he was the son of the late Edward Alexander “Pete” Queen and Leola Hull Queen. A longtime member of First United Methodist Church, he served as president of the Men’s Bible class for five years. He served in the Air National Guard and was sent to Pearl Harbor after the bombing. Hal was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose for 41 years. A jack of all trades and master of many, he owned and operated a sign company and a restaurant, Hal’s Burger Barn. He was a radio announcer for many years, beginning in 1948 at WHKY in Hickory. Also in Morganton-WMNC, Lenoir-WJRI, Spartanburg-WSPA, Concord-WORD, Valdese-WUIV, Icard and Statesville. An avid golfer, played many instruments, always had a joke to tell and enjoyed doing magic tricks. Most of all, he loved being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His love for his family was endless and unconditional. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Rodney Harold; a brother, Earl Queen; and a sister, Mirene Q. Stamey. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Howell Queen; a daughter and son-in-law, “ChiChi” and Bill Tourtellot of Weddington; a son and daughter-in-law, Hal and Rita Queen of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren, Billy and Dina Tourtellot of Greensboro, Rich and Ellen Tourtellot of Raleigh, Beth T. Diaferia, Hal and Leslie Queen, Rebekah, Emily, Daniel, Amy, David and Laura Queen, all of Charlotte; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Pearl Q. Boles of Hickory and Mae Q. and Ullysses Grisette of Valdese. The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Drs. George Freeman and John Christy and the Rev. Paul Starnes officiating. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cherryville. Pallbearers are Mr. Queen’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nephews. Honorary pallbearers are the Men’s Bible Class First United Methodist Church. GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mr. James L. Randolph, 69, of 535 Bonner Lake Road, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born in Cherokee County, he retired as plant manager of KMG Minerals, Inc., and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a member of Camps Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Cleveland and Lillie Albright Randolph. He is survived by his wife, Annie Jolley Randolph of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Suzanne Randolph of Dalton, Ga.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and David Fuller of Gaffney and Kim and Tony McDowell of Spartanburg, S.C.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jesse Randolph of Gaffney and H.C. Randolph of Mooresboro; and two sisters, Alene Randolph and Jenny Phillips, both of Gaffney. The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. at Camps Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Steve Durham and Dale Welch officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
