Trey Gilliam officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home.

Machon Dimsdale
SHELBY — Mrs. Machon Davina Hamrick Dimsdale, 22, of 1803 Gaffney Road, met her Lord and Savior, Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Boiling Springs. Born in Cleveland County, she was a student attending Cleveland Community College. She was a member of T.W. Lovelace Memorial Church. She was a graduate of Crest High School Class of 1998, played in the marching band and the pep band, member of the Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Youth Legislature, Key Club and was a Peer Helper. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Virginia Campbell Hamrick; and paternal grandparents, Langdon “Camp” and Ruth Horton Hamrick. She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Jason Dimsdale of the home; a son, Master Christian Elijah Dimsdale of the home; her parents, Michael David and Mary Virginia Hamrick Hamrick of Boiling Springs; four brothers, Brad Sperling and wife, Jerrianne of Wake Forest, Jeremy Sperling and fiancé, Connie Peterson, and Thomas Sperling and wife, Sandy, all of Boiling Springs, and Jeff Hamrick and wife, Buffy, of Asheville; three sisters, Michelle Sperling and fiancé, Michael Mason of High Shoals, Brandilyn Simmons and husband, Eric, of Monroe and Micah Hamrick of Boiling Springs; maternal grandfather, Thomas Hamrick of Boiling Springs; father-in-law, Bruce Dimsdale of Casar; mother-in-law, Karen Lattimore and husband, Frank, of Shelby; brother-in-law, Joshua Bruce Dimsdale of South Port; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at T.W. Lovelace Memorial Church with the Revs. Scott Caldwell and Mickey Heyward officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Machon Hamrick Dimsdale Memorial Fund, (helping a member of the Crest High School Band), care of Crest High School, 800 Old Boiling Springs Road, Shelby, NC 28152.

Sue Hopper
SHELBY — Mrs. Sue Carpenter Hopper, 58, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at home. Born in Cleveland County, she was a receptionist for Council on Aging and member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 25 years serving in Cleveland Chapter #110 in Shelby, Eastgate #312 and Derita #326 in Charlotte. She was also a member of the White Shrine and the Amaranth. She was preceded in death by her father, Forrest Everett Carpenter; and her husband, Larry Gene Hopper. She is survived by her mother, Ruby Ingle Carpenter of Lawndale; a daughter, Cindy Spencer and husband, Jimmy, of Blacksburg, S.C.; two brothers, Dwight Carpenter and wife, Linda, and Gordon Carpenter and wife, Janelle, all of Lawndale; a grandchild, Bryant Spencer; and by a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with her cousin, Rev. J. Billy Towery and the Rev. Julie A. Roberts officiating. Eastern Star Rites will be by Cleveland Chapter O.E.S. Burial will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews. The family will receive friends Wednesday at the church after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Council on Aging, 1266 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC 28150. Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth “Snookie” Degree
SHELBY — Mrs. Ruth Ell Humphries “Snookie” Degree, 32, of 418 Airline Ave., died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. A native of Cleveland County, she was employed by the Les and Deborah Farfour family for about ten years. She was preceded in death by her parents, by Edgar Ross and Bernice Humphries; her husband, Louis Clyde Degree; and a son, Bobby Degree. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Roger and Josephine Degree of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Genevive and Gilbert Tetteh of Boston; two grandchildren, Charletta Degree of Boston and Mieko Degree of Houston; five great-grandchildren, Roger Mandella Degree, Javan Degree, Charles Roger Riles, Robert Riles and Johnnie Ray Riles; a niece, Marchelle Dubost of Boston; a nephew, Rashawn Gray of New Bedford, Mass.; five cousins, Angela Ross Jeter of Charlotte, Steve Ross of Cherryville, Marie Degree, Karen Degree and Francine Beam, all of Shelby; and four special friends, Mattie Lathers, Earnestine Hamrick, Lucy Glenn and Matilda Love, all of Shelby. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel, at Enloe Mortuary, with the Rev. Robbie Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service. Memorials may be made to Harris Hospice Unit, Presbyterian Hospital, 200 Hawthorne Lane, P.O. Box 33549, Charlotte, NC, 28233-3549.

Martha Scruggs
SHELBY — Mrs. Martha Lee Hudson Scruggs, 73, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was born on April 15, 1929, in Fredrick, Md. Mrs. Scruggs lived in Washington, D.C., and grew up in North Carolina between Shelby and Brevard. She moved back to Cleveland County in 1957 and lived in Grover and then Shelby. Mrs. Scruggs has been active in many civic and charitable organizations, including Grover Woman’s Club, Cleveland Guards UDC, Isothermal Night Shelter and many others. She was a cradle to the grave Episcopalian and a member of St. Philips, Brevard; Trinity, Kings Mountain; and Church of the Redeemer, Shelby. Mrs. Scruggs retired in 1995 as executive director of Cleveland County Chapter of The American Red Cross, where she worked for 11 years. In 1992, she was named as one of Cleveland County’s Distinguished Women by the Cleveland County Commission on Women. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, painting, cooking, reading and dining out with friends. She loved playing with her grandchildren and watching them grow. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rebekah Scruggs and William H. Wylie of Atlanta; a son, James Christopher Scruggs of Hudson; and two grandchildren, Sarah Katherine and Elizabeth Anne Wylie of Atlanta. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. The family will receive friends Tuesday from noon to 7 p.m. at her home. Memorials may be made to Church of the Redeemer Building Fund or Cleveland County Chapter, American Red Cross. Lutz-Austell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Leroy H. Blake Sr.
BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mr. Leroy H. Blake Sr., 69, of 525 Huffman Road, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at White Oak Manor of Shelby. Born in Hyde County, he was a son of the late Thomas David and Myrtle Marie Gibbs Blake. A retired truck driver, he served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Huffman Blake of Blacksburg; two sons, Leroy H. Blake Jr. of Kings Mountain and Gary Blake and his wife, Jane, of Shelby; a daughter, Gail Blake Shytle of Grover; a brother and his wife, Ben and Charlotte Blake of Palmetto, Ga.; five grandchildren, Christopher Blake, Michael Blake, Holly Shytle, Ashley Blake and Alex Blake; and one great-grandchild, Ryan Blake. A graveside service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Allen Davis officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain.

Carol Jones
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Carol Daves Jones, 60, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital in Rutherfordton. The funeral will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Spencer Baptist Church. Burial will be in Walls Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home in Bostic.

Claude Petty
DETROIT — Mr. Claude Airy Petty, 72, of 19460 Cranbrook, No. 207, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington, Mich. He was the son of the late Herbert Petty Sr. and Permelia McGill Petty, and a native of Cleveland County. He joined Old Ellis Chapel Baptist Church at an early age and attended Washington High School in Waco. He served in the Army and was honorably discharged after three years of service. He was employed at Chrysler Corp. and Ford Motors, where he retired after 35 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Petty of Bay Shore, N.Y. He is survived by two daughters, Sylvia Fowler of Shelby and Gloria Cosner of Charleston, S.C.; one grandson, Donnie Davenport of Shelby; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Herbert Petty Jr. of Shelby, Lester Petty of Gaffney, S.C., and Eugene Petty of Newark, N.J.; four sisters, Flossie Wilson of Lowell, Mass., Sarah Koontz of Washington, D.C., and Wanda Guest and Janet Dawkins, both of Shelby; a son-in-law, Billy Fowler of Shelby; his extended family, Thelma Hubbard and daughter, Sonya Hubbard, of Detroit; two aunts, Kate Wilson of Shelby and Azelle McGill of Gastonia; and a very special cousin, Dwight Petty of Shelby. The funeral will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Good Samaritan Fellowship Church with the Rev. R.E. Devoe officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service, and at other times at 618 N. Post Road, Shelby. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Stephen Lail
RUTHERFORDTON — Mr. Stephen Phillip Lail, 52, of 156 Williams Road, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at his home. A memorial service will be today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Crowe’s Funeral Home in Rutherfordton with the Rev. Jerry Ruppe officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. FALLSTON — Mrs. Mattie Eljean Turner McMillian, 85, of 1308 E. Stagecoach Trail, formerly of Sylvester, Ga., died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Stamey Funeral Home of Fallston.

SHELBY — Mrs. Sue Carpenter Hopper, 58, of 405 Windcrest Drive, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at her home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

SHELBY — Danny O’Neal, 51, of Kings Road Extension, died Sunday at his home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Clara Boatwright
SHELBY — Mrs. Clara Boyles Boatwright, 77, of 409 Edgewood Road, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Wake Forest Medical Center. Born in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Curtis Evan and Kate Scronce Boyles. She graduated from Northbrook High School in 1942. She retired after 20 years as play school director at Shelby City Park and later from the cafeteria of Cleveland Memorial Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Shelby. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Harold Boatwright; two brothers, Weldon Boyles and Donald Boyles; and a sister, Inez Boyles Brewer. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike Boatwright and Steve and Betsy Boatwright, all of Shelby; three brothers and their wives, Harlan and Frankie Boyles of Raleigh, Howard and Winfred Boyles of Morganton and Carroll and Hattie Boyles of Raleigh; a sister, Pauline Boyles Houser of Vale; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Weldon Boyles of Hickory; two grandchildren, Laura Boatwright and Matt Boatwright of Shelby; and several special nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park, with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 2391, Shelby, NC 28151, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Rodney Dale Thornburg, 44, of Wright Road, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Cleveland County. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He worked in construction. He is survived by his parents, Newell and Betty Champion Thornburg of Kings Mountain; a son, Lauren Chase Thornburg of Fayetteville, Ga.; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lanny and Tammy Thornburg and Scott and Krista Thornburg, all of Kings Mountain. A graveside service will Monday at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Brackett and Leland Kerr officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Harris Funeral Home. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at First Church of the Nazarene with the Revs. Michael Daughrity and Jody Griffin officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Maurice Logan
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Maurice Logan, 58, of 311 Ebenezer Road, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at his home. He was the son of Dorothy Louise Logan and the late Lemuel Oates. He is survived by his wife, Lettie Crank Logan of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lesley Crank and Brian Williamson of Shelby; two sons, Andy Maurice Logan of Gastonia and Clinton Marcus Logan of Germany; a sister, Dorothy Mae Kimble of Kings Mountain; a brother, Lemuel Surratt of New Orleans; mother-in-law, Nettie G. Crank of Kings Mountain; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest L. Simmons officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. ASHEVILLE — Miss Gyanna Gayle Gerald, infant daughter of Virginia Leigh Hennessee and Craig Osmond Gerald, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002. A graveside service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Asheville. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

GREENWOOD, S.C. — Mr. J.C. Eledge, 73, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at VA Medical Center in Augusta, Ga. A graveside service will be today at 2 at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Ervin Price officiating. The family will receive friends today from 1 to 2 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.
