Benson, NC: Mr. James Edison Byrd, age 89, of 1280 Tarheel Road, Benson died Wednesday at his residence. Funeral services will be 3:00PM Sunday at Hodges Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Revs. Willard Hardison and Curtiss Tatum. Burial will follow in Devotional Gardens, Dunn.
Mr. Byrd was born June 13, 1918, in Johnston County to the late Roger G. & Lula Mae McLamb Byrd. Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Maude Miller Byrd, Sisters, Reba Byrd Stewart and Annie Ruth Ennis, Brothers, William Olden Byrd, John Erwin Byrd and Otis Leon Byrd. Mr. Byrd was a retired farmer and pork producer, member of the Mary Stewart Lions Club and a member of Hodges Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are Daughter: Judie Byrd Walsh of Benson; Son: J. E. “Jay” Byrd, Jr. and wife Martha of Olive Branch, MS; Grandchildren: Christopher Jay Byrd & Shaun Ryan Byrd of Birmingham, Alabama; Great Grandchildren: Abigail Kathryn Byrd, Jacob Andrew Byrd and Nathan James Byrd; Sisters: Eloise B. Beasley of Benson and Mary Weaver of Four Oaks; Brother: R.G. Byrd, Jr. of Fort Myers, FL.
Family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM Saturday at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson.

Mrs. Blanche Weaver Turlington

Coats, NC: Mrs. Blanche Weaver Turlington, age 77, of Coats, died Wednesday at her residence. Funeral services will be 11:00AM Saturday at Pleasant Memory Baptist Church. Officiating will be Revs. Stancil Baucom & Blair Little. Burial will follow in Harnett Devotional Gardens in Dunn.
Mrs. Turlington was born April 6, 1930, in Harnett County to the late Wade R. and Lessie Moore Weaver. She was preceded in death by her Husband, Wade A. Turlington. She was a homemaker, a retired employee of Terri Hill Manufacturing and a member of Pleasant Memory Baptist Church.
Surviving are: Sons & Daughter-In-Law, Don W. & Debbie Turlington of Coats and Tony Turlington of Coats; Sister: Glenda W. Barnhill of Dunn; Brothers: Fred Weaver of Dunn and Wade Weaver, Jr. of Coats; Five Grandchildren; and One Great-Grandson.

Mr. Delmon E. Wood

Benson, NC: Mr. Delmon E. Wood, age 62, of Benson died Monday. Funeral services will be 11:00AM Thursday at Stone’s Creek Advent Christian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Doug Abel. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Wood was born December 2, 1945 in Johnston County to the late Worth E. and Vonnie Allen Wood. He was a foreman in the quality assurance lab at PGI in Benson. Mr. Wood was a member of Stone’s Creek Advent Christian Church where he served as a deacon, a trustee, on the building committee, and in many other capacities.
Surviving are Sons & Daughter-in-Law, Anthony Dale & Susie Wood of Emerald Isle and Brandon Del Wood of Raleigh; 2 Step-Grandchildren; 1 Step-Great Grandchild; Brother, Waylon Wood of Benson; and Sisters, Josephine Parrish of Four Oaks; Shirley Wheeler of Benson, Alice Johnson of Dunn; and Karen Wood of Smithfield.
Family will receive friends from 7:00PM to 9:00PM Wednesday at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson and other times at the home of Dianne McLamb, 132 Crystal Place, Benson, NC.

Mrs. Bettye Wilson Roberts

Willow Spring, NC: Mrs. Bettye Wilson Roberts, age 88, of Willow Spring passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 7, 2008, at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, VA. Funeral services will be 2:00PM Friday at Rose & Graham Funeral Chapel in Benson. Officiating will be Elder Tony Parker. Burial will follow in Fellowship Community Cemetery beside her beloved husband of 57 years, Willie Elbert Roberts.
Mrs. Roberts, born August 31, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, was the only daughter of the late Elder Thomas Leonard and Bettie Lou Elliott Wilson. Her seven brothers are all deceased. Bettye was a member of the Primitive Baptist Faith for over 70 years. Her years after retirement were filled with countless acts of love, joy and service to her church, community, and family. All who knew her were blessed.
Survivors, as she described, “her beautiful daughters, ” Rose R. MacKay and husband, Don, of Springfield, Virginia, and Jayne R. Byrd and husband, Roy, of Cary, NC; grandson and wife, Larry and Dorenda Johnson and great grandsons, Michael and David, all of Indian Head, Maryland; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. James Lamar Jernigan

Yorktown, VA: Mr. James Lamar Jernigan, age 59, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2008. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at World Outreach Worship Center in Yorktown VA.
Graveside funeral service will be held 11:00AM Friday at Roselawn Cemetery in Benson. Officiating will be Bishop Jason Cook and Rev. Bobby Collins.
Born January 18, 1948 to Alma Ruth Lee Jernigan of Benson and the late James Otha Jernigan, Lamar graduated from Meadow High School. He joined the U.S. Army in 1968 and later from October 1968 to May 1970, he was part of the 4th Infantry Division in Vietnam (ALOHA). In May 1970, he married the former Sue Allen and they traveled and served in the military and ministry to the military in Korea, West Germany, Ft. Rucker, Ala. and Ft. Eustis, Va. for more than 26 years. He retired from active duty October 1994 as Chief Warrant Officer Four. Award and decorations include the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal and Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars.
He was employed with CAS Inc. as Manager, Systems Support Division. He served his community of York County in the York Lions and hosted many foreign exchange students. He served in the Denbigh Church of God (World Outreach Worship Center), as Church and Pastor's council, Sunday school superintendent and pioneered Cornerstone Fellowship Church of God's birth in 1988. He served as the church clerk and Men's Fellowship Leader and until his promotion to heaven, as Pastor's council and Adult Sunday school teacher. He also served as the Ministry to the Military Coordinator for over 30 years. He enjoyed traveling, cooking, restoring mustangs, and spending time with his families and spoiling the grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Jernigan; daughter, Evelyn Rippee and husband, Jerry; son, James A. Jernigan; five grandchildren, Brianna Daniel, Jaylen and Justin Wharton, and Bradley and Nicolas Rippee; three brothers, Tony Jernigan and wife, Ann, Stevie Jernigan and wife, Wanda and Timothy Jernigan and wife, Brandy; a sister, Cathy Jernigan; Sisters-in-Law, Becky Rice and husband, Ron, Faye Woodall, Florence Johnson and husband, Ray, Barbara Keen and husband, Harold, and Frances Settle; numerous special nieces, nephews, and friends.
Family will receive friends at Rose & Graham Funeral Home, Benson, from 6:00PM to 8:00PM Thursday.

Rev. John Blaney Stephenson

Coats, NC: Rev. John Blaney Stephenson, age 87, of Coats died Sunday at the NC State Veterans Home in Fayetteville. Funeral services will be 11:00AM Wednesday at the Coats Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Revs. Jesse Mooney and Tom Austin. Burial will follow at Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Angier.
Rev. Stephenson was born January 22, 1920 in Harnett County to the late Ingham and Lula Pleasant Stephenson. Rev. Stephenson was also preceded in death by Brothers, Wade and Julian Stephenson. He served in the US Army during WWII. Rev. Stephenson was a graduate of Southwest Theological Seminary. He was in the ministry for over 50 years, and served in Sampson, Bertie, Onslow, New Hanover, Harnett, and Columbus Counties.
Surviving include Wife, Agatha Sartin Stephenson; Sons, Jerry F. Stephenson of Richmond, VA., and Joel Van Stephenson of Greensboro; Brothers, Lindsey Stephenson of Angier, A.D. Stephenson of Garner, and David Stephenson of Angier; Sisters, Pauline Guy of Willow Spring, Leola Stephenson of Angier, and Sue Nooney of Angier; Four Grandchildren, and One Great Granddaughter; 27 Nieces & Nephews.

Angier, NC: Mr. James “Jamie” Martin Powell age 35 of Mulberry Lane died Saturday at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Funeral services will be 2:00PM Wednesday at Grace Chapel Church, Dunn. Officiating will be the Revs. Scott McQueen and Travis Cain. Burial will follow in Banner Chapel Church Cemetery, Benson.
Mr. Powell was born December 29, 1972 in Cumberland County to Marilyn Moore Capri of Angier and Clifford L. Powell of Charlotte. Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his Paternal Grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Art Powell. He was sub-contractor with Time Warner Cable.
Surviving in addition to his Mother and Father are, Step-Father, Terry Capri of Angier; Sisters & Brother-In-Law, Jessica & Kelly Giles of Angier, Candi Powell and Christy Powell both of Charlotte; Brother, Martin Powell of Charlotte; Maternal Grandparents, James H. and Mary Taylor of Fayetteville; Maternal Grandfather, Melvin Moore; Fianceé, Misty Nelson; Special Niece, Addison Giles; and Special Nephew, Jayden Giles.

Mr. W. Paul Stephenson, Jr.
January 4, 2008
McGee’s Crossroads, NC: Mr. W. Paul Stephenson, Jr., age 79, of 12020 NC HWY 50 North died Friday at his residence. Funeral Services will be 11:00AM Monday at Providence Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Jim Davis and Mr. Clyde Wiley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Stephenson was born August 19, 1928 in the Pleasant Grove Township in Johnston County to the late William Paul, Sr. and Maytle Johnson Stephenson. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Jean Roberts Stephenson. Mr. Stephenson owned and operated Stephenson’s Bar-B-Q, and Stephenson’s Nursery. He was a 1947 graduate of Cleveland High School, and attended Louisburg College where he played baseball from 1948 through 1949, and also played guitar in the jazz band. He also played baseball for the Cleveland semi-pro team. After Louisburg, Mr. Stephenson farmed from 1948 through 1958 when he established Stephenson’s Bar-B-Q. In 1979, he opened Stephenson’s Nursery. Mr. Stephenson was very active in his community, involved in the Boy Scouts and Ruritan Club. He played the guitar with Stephenson Brothers, was a song writer, and was a member of Life’s Railway Singers. Mr. Stephenson entertained for many church and civic functions, especially senior citizens groups. He was also a member of Providence Presbyterian Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher, superintendent, deacon, elder, choir member and a leader in many fundraising activities of the church.
Survivors include Wife, Ann King Stephenson; Sons & Daughters-In-Law, Wayne Stephenson, Samuel & Wendy Stephenson, Andrew & Lynn Stephenson, and Christopher & Kristy Stephenson, all of McGee’s Crossroads; Step-Daughters & Spouses, Sherrie & R.H. Byrd of Bunnlevel, Susan & Joe Rudd of McGee’s Crossroads, and Allison Tart of McGee’s Crossroads; Step-Son & Spouse, Steve & Kelly Nordan of McGee’s Crossroads; Sister, Rose Hollingsworth of Raleigh, and Brothers, Marshall Stephenson of Raleigh and Shelby Stephenson of McGee’s Crossroads; Nine Grandchildren, Eight Step-Grandchildren; One Great Grandchild; and One Step-Great Grandchild.
