SHELBY — Mrs. Sue Carpenter Hopper, 58, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at home. Born in Cleveland County, she was a receptionist for Council on Aging and member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 25 years serving in Cleveland Chapter No. 110 in Shelby, Eastgate No. 312 and Derita No. 326 in Charlotte. She was also a member of the White Shrine and the Amaranth. She was preceded in death by her father, Forrest Everett Carpenter; and her husband, Larry Gene Hopper. She is survived by her mother, Ruby Ingle Carpenter of Lawndale; a daughter, Cindy Spencer and husband, Jimmy, of Blacksburg, S.C.; two brothers, Dwight Carpenter and wife, Linda, and Gordon Carpenter and wife, Janelle, all of Lawndale; a grandchild, Bryant Spencer; and by a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be today at 2 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with her cousin, the Rev. J. Billy Towery and the Rev. Julie A. Roberts officiating. Eastern Star Rites will be by Cleveland Chapter O.E.S. Burial will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews. The family will receive friends today at the church after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Council on Aging, 1266 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC 28150. Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James Harris
BOILING SPRINGS — Mr. James Bryan Harris, 80, of 211 E. College Ave., died Monday, July 22, 2002, at Crawley Memorial Hospital. Born in Cleveland County, he retired from Drexel Furniture Co. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was preceded in death by, his parents, Bronner and Esther Bridges Harris; two brothers, Earl and Max Harris; and two sisters, Mildred Dedmon and Helen Rule. He is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Penson Harris of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Harvey Davis, Betty and Buddy Taylor and Teresa and Arthur Warlick, all of Boiling Springs, and Diane Ferrell of Surfside Beach, S.C.; a son, Jimmy Harris of the home; a granddaughter and her husband, Kim Ferrell and Chris Bennett; four grandsons and wives, Sam and Carol Davis, Ronnie and Spring Ferrell, Mark and Lisa Taylor and Bryan Powell; two great-granddaughters, Hannah and Madison Ferrell; two great-grandsons, Tyler Bennett and Alexander Self; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Frances Harris, Kermit and Edith Harris and Jerry and Janice Harris; a sister and brother-in-law, Walda and Bob Allen; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Harris and Sarah Frances McKnight; and by a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Cleveland Memorial Park with Dr. Carroll Page officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Cleveland Funeral Services and at other times at 104 Maxwell Court, Boiling Springs.

SHELBY — Mr. Alfred Morrell, 83, of 1823 Quail Run Drive, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Enloe Mortuary.

Robert Callahan
SHELBY — Mr. Robert Joseph “Bob” Callahan, BCIA-Certified Biofeedback Specialist, died Monday, July 22, 2002. Mr. Callahan was the son of the late Dewey Wesley and Alma Crawley Callahan. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology and philosophy from Wake Forest University. His graduate work in psychology and counseling was done at Appalachian State University and Columbia University. Additional graduate study was at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Winston-Salem. He had many years experience as a professor of psychology and was adjunct professor of psychology, Cleveland Community College. He had also been associated with national and international companies in personnel development and employee counseling in areas of job stress and motivation. Mr. Callahan was a member of the Biofeedback Society of America, the Biofeedback Society of North Carolina, having served both as president and chairman of the board of directors, member of the Phobia Society of America, American Association of Behavioral Therapists and has served as an examiner, Biofeedback Certification Institute of America. Mr. Callahan was also co-founder of Medical Arts Pharmacy in the mid-’60s. He later sold his interest in the pharmacy but, along with his wife, retained ownership of the building and adjoining offices. Mr. Callahan more recently co-founded Action Travel & Cruise Agency, Inc. Before his death, he had acquired sole ownership of the agency. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Long Callahan; a son, Dr. Robert Wesley Callahan of Fairmont, W.Va.; and two grandchildren, Erin Callahan of Durham and Chris Callahan of Charlotte. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Andy Roby officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Wake Forest University, 1834 Wake Forest Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; or to Gardner-Webb University, P.O. Box 976, Boiling Springs, NC 28017.

Emma Helton
ELLENBORO — Mrs. Emma Mae Crawley Helton, 87, of 198 Old Hollis Road, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital in Rutherfordton. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.

‘Snookie’ Degree
SHELBY — Mrs. Ruth Ell Humphries “Snookie” Degree, 70, of 418 Airline Ave., died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. A native of Cleveland County, she was employed by the Les and Deborah Farfour family for about 10 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, by Edgar Ross and Bernice Humphries; her husband, Louis Clyde Degree; and a son, Bobby Degree. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Roger and Josephine Degree of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Genevive and Gilbert Tetteh of Boston; two grandchildren, Charletta Degree of Boston and Mieko Degree of Houston; five great-grandchildren, Roger Mandella Degree, Javan Degree, Charles Roger Riles, Robert Riles and Johnnie Ray Riles; a niece, Marchelle Dubost of Boston; a nephew, Rashawn Gray of New Bedford, Mass.; five cousins, Angela Ross Jeter of Charlotte, Steve Ross of Cherryville, Marie Degree, Karen Degree and Francine Beam, all of Shelby; and four special friends, Mattie Lathers, Earnestine Hamrick, Lucy Glenn and Matilda Love, all of Shelby. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel at Enloe Mortuary with the Rev. Robbie Moore officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns. Lucy Jackson
ROCK HILL, S.C. — Mrs. Lucy McGowan Jackson, 87, of 261 S. Herlong, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare. Born in Valdosta, Ga., she was the daughter of the late William P. and Lucy Bedell McGowan. She was a homemaker, past president of the Rock Hill Women’s Garden Club and was a member of the Ebenezer Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Her husband, Samuel Watson Jackson Sr., preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, Watt Jackson Jr. of Lawndale; a daughter, Marsha Dozier of Rock Hill; a sister, Clara Moore of Durham; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Ebenezer Ebenezer Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Revs. Barry Eller and Boyce Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends today from 4 to 9 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Marsha Dozier, 973 Nightingale Road, Rock Hill. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Bass Funeral Home of Rock Hill is in charge of arrangements.

Nancy Morgan
RALEIGH – Mrs. Nancy Idaree Hawkins Morgan, 71, formerly of Cherryville, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, in Raleigh. She was born on Jan. 4, 1931, in Rutherfordton to Olive Estelle Crabtree and R.Z.I. Hawkins. On Dec. 4, 1953, she married Hobert Morgan. They were married for 35 years until his death in 1989. She was a volunteer Girl Scout leader with the Girl Scouts of the Pioneer Council for more than nine years. She and Hobert took the troop on camping trips throughout North Carolina and Georgia. She also tutored reading at East Elementary School, volunteered with the Band Boosters at Cherryville High School, coached the Ferguson Hardware Girl’s Softball Team and served with Hobert as volunteers in their church. She was retired from Bike Athletic. Ida loved to travel and shop. She was preceded in death by her son, Andy. She is survived by her daughters, Danita Jan Morgan of Raleigh and her husband, Christ White, and Lynn Morgan Pope of Hendersonville and her husband, George Pope. Other survivors include sisters and brothers, Jane Hawkins, Becky Camp, Halys Hawkins of Rutherford County, Bertie Amos of Salisbury, Rommie Hawkins of Huntersville and many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at First Wesleyan Church in Cherryville. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 130 Pleasant Church Road, Rutherfordton. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made in her memory to Girl Scouts of the Pioneer Council, 250 S. New Hope Road, Gastonia, NC 28054. LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Gwen Smith Craft Custis, 46, of 202 State St., Lincolnton, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at her home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ebony & White’s Funeral Service.

Helen Laughlin
SHELBY — Mrs. Helen M. Laughlin, 76, of 1301 Hammock St., died Tuesday, June 23, 2002, at Hospice at Wendover. Born in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late Charles H. and Mary Amanda Parton Mace. She retired from Bost Bakery as cake decorator. She was a member of Little White Country Church in Guilkey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Mace; and two sisters, Fleta Blanton and Dot Morris. She is survived by her husband, J.E. Laughlin of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul Jr. and Vickie Stallings of Shelby; a daughter, Patricia Lineberger of Mount Holly; three brothers, Sam Mace of Fayetteville, Ga., and Glenn Mace and Donald Mace, both of Rutherfordton; five grandchildren, Sharon Jackson, Steven Jackson, Angela Guy and husband, Jerry, Amy Stallings and Drew Stallings; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Little White Country Church in Guilkey with the Revs. Roland Arrowood and Buddy Campbell officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Velvely Painter
GAFFNEY, S.C. — Mrs. Velvely Ann Bostic Painter, 59, of 237 Eastbrook Road, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at her home. Born in Mooresboro, she was a daughter of the late Virgil Romeo and Mary Alice Lovelace Bostic. She was a Baptist and a former textile employee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Forrest Bostic. She is survived by her husband, Larry Painter Sr. of Gaffney; a son, Richard Larry Painter Jr. of Gaffney; two daughters, Sheila Coggins and Kristy Lawson, both of Gaffney; five grandchildren; a brother, Eddie Bostic of Gaffney; and a sister, Elizabeth Pettit of Gaffney. A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Oakland Cemetery with the Rev. Lewis Batchelor officiating. Pallbearers are Ben Hannon, Joe Hannon, Dave Bishop, Eddie Bostic Jr., David Rich and Donnie Pettit. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and at other times at the home. Martha Scruggs
SHELBY — Mrs. Martha Lee Hudson Scruggs, 73, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was born on April 15, 1929, in Fredrick, Md. Mrs. Scruggs lived in Washington, D.C., and grew up in North Carolina between Shelby and Brevard. She moved back to Cleveland County in 1957 and lived in Grover and then Shelby. Mrs. Scruggs has been active in many civic and charitable organizations, including Grover Woman’s Club, Cleveland Guards UDC, Isothermal Night Shelter and many others. She was a cradle to the grave Episcopalian and a member of St. Philips, Brevard; Trinity, Kings Mountain; and Church of the Redeemer, Shelby. Mrs. Scruggs retired in 1995 as executive director of Cleveland County Chapter of The American Red Cross, where she worked for 11 years. In 1992, she was named as one of Cleveland County’s Distinguished Women by the Cleveland County Commission on Women. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, painting, cooking, reading and dining out with friends. She loved playing with her grandchildren and watching them grow. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rebekah Scruggs and William H. Wylie of Atlanta; a son, James Christopher Scruggs of Hudson; two grandchildren, Sarah Katherine and Elizabeth Anne Wylie of Atlanta; a brother, John Randolph Hudson of Brevard; and a sister, Rebekah Hudson Huggins of Brevard. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer with Father Eugene McDowell officiating. The family will receive friends today from noon to 7 p.m. at her home. Memorials may be made to Church of the Redeemer Building Fund or Cleveland County Chapter, American Red Cross. Lutz-Austell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Willie McSwain
FOREST CITY — Mr. Willie T. McSwain, 81, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at VA Medical Center in Salisbury. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at MountPleasant Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Brock officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. before the service at Harrleson Funeral Home.

Simonne Bivens
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Simonne Yvonne Bivens, 80, of Spring Lake Drive, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at her home. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 12:10 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Forest City with Father Gabriel Meehan and the Rev. Andy Cilone officiating. Interment will be private in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the service in the church hall. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. FOREST CITY — Jacob Eugene Jones, infant son of Jason and Tammy Riley Jones, of 2101 Chase High Road, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher. A graveside service will be today at 5 p.m. in Floyd’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Hutchins officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. before the service at Harrelson Funeral Home.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Hazel Buchanan Ollis, 87, of 804 Rhodes Ave., died Monday, July 22, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain. The funeral will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Ollis Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Wells officiating. A graveside service will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in Buchanan Family Cemetery in Frank with the Rev. Kenneth Lance officiating. Danny Beck
SHELBY — Mr. Danny O’Neal Beck, 51, of 2446 Kings Road Extension, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at his home. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late John Nelson Beck and Lorene Albea Beck. He was employed by Clyde Willis & Son as a brick layer. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. He is survived by his stepmother, Mary Beck of Cherryville; two sons, Joey O’Neal Beck and Jason Beck, both of Shelby; two brothers, John W. Beck of Ashboro and Michael Beck of Shelby; a special friend, Hannah Brown of Shelby; two nephews, Chris Beck and Ricky Beck; a niece, Cathy Beck Hill; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stanley Webb officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home. BOILING SPRINGS — Mrs. Mary Etta Harrill Lewis Gragg, 77, of 349 E. College Ave., died Monday, July 22, 2002, at her home. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral home and at other times at the home. Mattie McMillian
FALLSTON — Mrs. Mattie Eljean Turner McMillian, 85, of 1308 E. Stagecoach Trail, formerly of Sylvester, Ga., died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center. Born Feb. 18, 1917, in Calhoun County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Shell and Lula Lawson Turner. She retired from Coats & Clark Thread Company in Albany, Ga. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Douglas Edler and Lindsey McMillian; three brothers, Carl Turner, Bert Lawson and Robert Turner; and a sister, Faye Turner. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Anne Turner of Bruchkobel, Germany and Edward and Sue Turner of Sylvester, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jean and Yates Green of Fallston; 12 grandchildren, Myra Clark of Fallston, Geneva Maners of Denver, N.C., Letitia Willis of Cherryville, Shelly Blalock of Poulan, Ga., Rita Chavarrie of Mesa, Ariz., Ginger Turner and Gloria Bruck, both of Bruchkobel, James E. Turner Jr. of Providence, R.I., Janet E. Lewis of Tampa, Fla., Jan E. Suggs, Joy E. Bates and John E. Turner, all of Tallahassee, Fla.; 25 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be tonight at 7 at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jackie Price and Mr. Wray Canipe officiating. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Wallace Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service until 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Cleveland Pines Nursing Center Solarium Fund, 1404 N. Lafayette St., Shelby, NC 28150.
