Ostine Greene
SHELBY — Mrs. Ostine Whitaker Greene, 92, of White Oak Manor, formerly of 3914 W. Dixon Blvd. died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at her residence. A native of Cleveland County, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and a former Sunday school teacher at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. She enjoyed working in her yard and keeping in touch with friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Stowe and Ola Grigg Whitaker; her husband, Lloyd E. Greene; two brothers, Shull and Howard Whitaker; a sister, Luna Whitaker; and a son-in-law, Edwin Wray Cabiness. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd G. and Glenda Greene of Shelby; two daughters and a son-in-law, Elizabeth G. Cabiness and Myrna G. and Jack Hamrick Jr., all of Shelby; a brother, Vaughn Whitaker of Shelby; two sisters, Ruby Biddix and Blanche David, both of Shelby; three grandchildren and their spouses, Lisa Greene and Greg Goforth of York, S.C., and Lynn Greene and Keith Houser and Jeremy Hamrick, all of Shelby; and four great-grandchildren, Matthew and Miranda Goforth and Kelsey and Katelyn Brooke Houser. The funeral will be Monday at 4 p.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Pruitt and Dr. Paul Sorrells officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mrs. Edwin Cabiness on West Randolph Road. Memorials may be made to Beaver Dam Baptist Church, 123 Beaver Dam Church Road, Shelby, NC 28152.

J.D. Jones
SHELBY — Mr. J.D. Jones, 78, of 206 Beaver Dam Drive, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center. Born Feb. 6, 1924, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Ladd and Mary Jane Greene Jones. He retired from Esther Mill Co. and was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Joy Group, R.W. McCurry Sunday School Class and was a former deacon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ivey Jones and Winford Jones; and a sister, Bonnie Lee Jones. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Bonnie Ashley Jones of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Theresa Jones of Shelby; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Lewis and Kay Jones of Boiling Springs and Palmer Jones of Shelby; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Etta Branton of Charlotte and Dot Palmer, Anna Catherine and Leonard Causby, Betty and Garland Bowen and Judy and Bud Delozier, all of Shelby; two grandchildren and their spouses, Wendy and Ronnie Stewart of Shelby and Kim and Dan Proctor of Cherryville; and four great-grandchildren, Ashley Stewart, Dusty Stewart, Zachary Proctor and Autumn Proctor. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Pruitt and Dr. Paul Sorrells officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home. VALE — Mr. Burgin Columbus Miller Jr., 71, of 643 N. Brook III School Road, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Mercy Hospital. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cedar Grove Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dale Pederson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. GASTONIA — Mr. Floyd E. Head, 68, of 1755 Windy Rush Lane, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at his home. Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Jesse and Geneva Revels Head. He was a retired driver for Dallas Mavis Trucking and a member of Faith Baptist Church of Kings Mountain. He is survived by his wife, Doris Payseur Head of Gastonia; two sons, Edward Head and wife, Penny, and Keith Head and wife, Terrie, all of Boiling Springs; stepchildren, Sandy Michaels and Becky Rollins, both of Dallas, Robert Goins of Gastonia and Tim Willis of Kings Mountain; brothers, James B. Head of Chesnee, S.C., James A. Head of Fort Myers, Fla., and Ralph Head of Shelby; a sister, Juanita Saldo of Eagle Lake, Fla.; half brother, Harold Scott of Shelby; half sister, Louise Bradshaw of Gastonia; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. in the Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain with the Rev. Robert Hicklin officiating. SHELBY — Mr. James Edwin “Dick” Ellis, 76, of 1862 East Marion St., died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, he was a self-employed agriculture pilot and a truck driver for Ellis & Ellis Trucking. He was a member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church and served in the Army in the European and Pacific Theaters, Germany. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Gordon and Gertha Gay Bridges Ellis; two brothers, Michael and Joe Dean Ellis; and a sister, Margaret Ellis Mercier. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Blanton Ellis of the home; a son, Jimmy Ellis of Kings Mountain; a daughter, Jan Ellis of Kings Mountain; a brother, W. Yancey Ellis of Shelby; four sisters, Rebecca Ellis Peeler and Martha Ellis Askins, both of Charlotte, Nancy Ellis Greene of Shelby and Ruth Ellis Arant of Indian Trail; a granddaughter, Brittney Ellis of Kings Mountain; and by 17 nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Ross Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Joe Reeves and Mr. Jim Hayes officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Cleveland Funeral Services and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Ross Grove Baptist Church or Hospice of Cleveland County.

VALE — Mr. Burgin Columbus Miller Jr., 71, of 643 North Brook III School Road, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Stamey Funeral Home of Fallston.

LINCOLNTON — Mrs. Lenora “Gwen” Smith Craft Custis, 46, of 202 State St., died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at her home. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Ebony & White’s Funeral Service with the Rev. Lee T. Cline officiating. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home of her brother, Harvey Smith, 901 E. Pine St., Lincolnton.

Alfred Morrell
SHELBY — Mr. Alfred Morrell, 83, of 1823 Quail Run Drive, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the home. The funeral will be Saturday at noon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Eric Hoseknecht officiating. Burial will be in Eskridge Grove Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 to 8 at the S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel of Enloe Mortuary. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

SHELBY — Mr. J.D. Jones, 78, of 206 Beaver Dam Drive, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Sarah Wells
SHELBY — Mrs. Sarah Lee Hopper Wells, 83, of 910 Parkwood Drive, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Stough M. and Margaret London Hopper. She received a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Mars Hill College. She was a homemaker and accountant for Clyde A. Short Co. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Shelby, sang in choir for 60 years, member of Jackie Stone Sunday School Class. Sarah Hopper and Mac Wells were the first couple married in Webb Chapel after its completion. She played second violin, first chair, in Mars Hill College Orchestra. She enjoyed still photography, making home movies and reading. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Carlos, Alton and James Hopper; and one sister, Rebecca Hopper. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Lee McBride “Mac” Wells of the home; a son, David Lee Wells and wife, Melissa, of Shelby; and one grandchild, David Lee Wells Jr. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Webb Chapel of First Baptist Church with the Rev. Perry Holleman officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Cecil Burton Funeral Home and at other times at the home. LEXINGTON, S.C. — Mrs. Betty Francis Young, 76, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at Heartland Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Lexington, S.C. A graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Blacksburg, S.C., with the Rev. David Rowe officiating. The family will receive friends after the service and at other times at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to the A.R. Presbyterian Church, 108 S. Chester St., Blacksburg, S.C. 29702. Alfred Morrell
SHELBY — Mr. Alfred Morrell, 83, of 1823 Quail Run Drive, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the home. He was born Oct. 17, 1918, in New Orleans, La., son of the late Jesse Morrell Sr. and Bertha Morrell Dorsey. He attended elementary and high school in New Orleans. On May 9, 1942, he joined the Army and was honorably discharged on Nov. 30, 1945, as a staff sergeant. He was a World War II veteran. While living in Shelby, he worked for the Cleveland County Schools and at Drexel Heritage Furnishings Inc. as an upholsterer, where he later retired. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Morrell; and his brother, Jesse Morrell Jr. He leaves to cherish fond memories a daughter and son-in-law, Yolande Morrell and LeeRoy Johnson of Shelby; a stepson, Kenneth Francois of New Orleans; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at noon at St.Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Eric Hoseknecht officiating. Burial will be in Eskridge Grove Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 to 8 at the S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel of Enloe Mortuary. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Life Enrichment Center, 1270 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

MOORESBORO — Mr. Bobby Eugene Walton, 50, of 445 Grant Grove Church Road, died Sunday, July 21, 2002. The funeral will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Youngs Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Davius R. Miller officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of an aunt, Martha Walton, 125 Shady Lane, Mooresboro. ELLENBORO — Mrs. Buna Newton Dobbins, 85, a resident of Fairhaven Nursing Center, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital in Rutherfordton. She was a native of Rutherford County, a daughter of the late Ambros and Rosella Butler Newton. She was a homemaker and a member of Walls Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Dobbins; one son, James Dobbins; one daughter, Donnis Dobbins; six brothers, Carl Newton, Howard Newton, Hix Newton, AC Newton, Fred Newton and Earl Newton; and three sisters, Lillian Jones, Mammie Holland and Carrie Lee Lane. She is survived by two daughters, Joanne Dotson and husband, Perry, of Ellenboro and Doris Bridges of Knoxville, Tenn.; one brother, Clyde Newton of Newton; one daughter-in-law, Francis Dobbins of Atlanta; and two grandchildren, Jimmy Bridges of Knoxville and Matthew Dotson of Ellenboro. The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Walls Baptist Church with the Rev. Roger Overton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church and at other times at the home of her daughter, Joanne and Perry Dotson, 1065 U.S. 74 Business, Ellenboro.
