SHELBY — Mrs. Ruby Novella Hudson Queen Padgette, 69, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Hudson Memorial Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Cohen Franklin Hudson; her mother, Anner Roxanna Chapman; a daughter, Willmer Lee Queen; and two brothers, Elemer Hudson and Kinley Hudson. She is survived by her husband, Johnny Ray Padgette of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary Lee and Teresa Queen of Golden Valley; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Annie Sue and Donald Woody of Drexel and Betty and Charles Wilson, Louise and Ray Hoyle and Mary Caroline Allen, all of Shelby; six brothers, Horace Hudson of Smyra, S.C., the Rev. Jerry Hudson of Casar, Connely Hudson of Bostic, Gene Hudson of Gaffney, S.C., Tommy Hudson of Shelby, and Kenneth Hudson of Lawndale; seven sisters, Florence Lail of Boiling Springs, Nellie Farris and Bonnie Martin, both of Bessemer City, Marie Addikans of West Virginia, Shirley Hoyle and Georgia Chapman, both of Valdese, and Ethel Ledbetter of Morganton; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hudson Memorial Baptist Church in Lawndale with the Revs. Jerry Hudson and Jackie Price officiating. Burial will be in Casar Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are Kevin Woody, Cale Woody, Dennis Wilson, David Owens, Floyd Hastings and Glenn Woody. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the church. Memorials may be made to Hudson Memorial Baptist Church, 762 Warlick Road, Lawndale, NC 28090. Lutz-Austell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

‘Speedy’ Wright
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mr. Emanuel M. “Speedy” Wright, 66, of 143 Harvest Drive, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia. A memorial service will be announced at a later time. Memorials may be made to Gaston Memorial Critical Care, GMH Foundation, attention Kristen White, P.O. Box 1747, Gastonia, NC 28053. Harris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

“Bill” Beam VALE — Mr. Houser Douglas “Bill” Beam, 77, of 491 Howard’s Creek Mill Road, died Sunday, July 28, 2002. Born in Lincoln County, he was retired from Carolina Freight after 30 years of service. Prior to his employment he joined the Navy in 1944 as a member of the “Seabees” 140th NCB Engineer Corp. and was honorably discharged in 1946. He entered the Army National Guard in 1950 and served as Sergeant in Co. C 509th Engineers 30th Infantry in Korea. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and honorably discharged in 1952. He is survived by his wife, Inez Reep Beam; one daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Bobby Jenks; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Judy Beam; a son, Bill Beam; two grandchildren, Matthew Reep and his wife Amy, and Michael Reep; his mother, Hattie Beam of Cherryville; one brother, T.L. Beam of Vale; one half-brother, Doyle Beam of Asheville; two half-sisters, Shirley Hamrick of Cherryville, and Jane Cloninger of Asheville. The funeral will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Cedar Grove Lutheran Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Warlick Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Cedar Grove Lutheran Church, 261 Cedar Grove Church Road, Vale, NC 28168.

Charles Winfield Jr.
MOORESBORO — Mr. Charles Edward Winfield Jr., 55, of 3406 Jolley Road, Mooresboro, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at his home. A native of Union County, he was a former employee of Drexel Heritage. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Edward Winfield Sr. and his mother, Naoma Isabell Mullis Winfield. He is survived by his wife, Hester Tesseneer Winfield of the home; two sons, James Edward Winfield of Monroe and Brian Thomas Winfield of Lancaster, S.C.; three granddaughters, Sheena, Miranda and Jessica Winfield of Monroe; and a brother, Wayne Winfield of Shelby. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel with Pastor Rhommie Williams and the Rev. Phillip Dunlap officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cleveland Funeral Services and at other times at the home.

James Grindle
GASTONIA — Mr. James Theron Grindle, 80, of 5106 Little Mountain Road, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at South Gastonia Church of God. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at Carothers Funeral Home.

James Snyder
EASLEY, S.C. — Mr. James Ray Snyder, 31, of 106 McDuffie St., died Friday, July 26, 2002. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bill Alley officiating. Burial will be in Rutherfordton City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at Crowe Funeral Home.

Thurman Cline
CROUSE — Mr. Thurman Cline, 88, of 419 Hephzibah Church Road, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Lincoln Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ebony and White’s Funeral Service.

Lottie Mae Lee
SHELBY —— Mrs. Lottie Mae Hopper Lee, 92, of 1800 Kinston Road, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was born Dec. 15, 1909, to the late Nuffie Hopper. She was a member of Eskridge Grove Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board, the Mary Wilson Missionary Group and the Spiritual Choir. She was also a member of the Electra Chapter, No. 12. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.C. Lee; an aunt, Janie Hopper; two sons, Charlie Lee and J.C. Lee; a grandson, Charles Lee; two sisters, Winnie Williams and Ollie Hopper; and a brother, Avins Hopper. She leaves to cherish fond memories, three daughters and sons-in-law, W. Louise and Johnny Pettis, Vera J. and Leonard McKinzie and Jessie L. and Robert Parrish, all of Shelby; three sons and daughters-in-law, Billy J. and Diane Lee of Shelby, Jeremiah and Maxine Lee of Detroit and Samuel Lee of Asheville; two daughters-in-law, Frances Lee and Lucille Lee both of Shelby; 28 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. The funeral will be Thursday at Eskridge Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Strickland Maddox officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the church. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Grembecki
SHELBY — Mrs. Dorothy Johnson Grembecki, 79, of 210 Vauxhall Drive, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at her residence. A private memorial service will be held at a later date Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robby Humphries
SHELBY — Mr. Robby Dean Humphries, 33, of 1607 Farmville Road, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at his residence. A native of Cleveland County, he was a former employee of Wesson Septic Service and Cleveland Landscaping. He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Dean Humphries. He is survived by his mother, Martha Jean Martin Norville; his stepfather, Bruce W. Norville; his wife, Lisa Greene Humphries; his son, Bobby James Humphries; his daughter, Lisa Nicole Humphries; two grandmothers, Lois Martin and Nannie Mae Humphries; and two grandfathers, Arvin Humphries and Eugene Cody Martin. The funeral will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Keith Dixon officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service and other times at the home.

SHELBY — Mr. Charles William “Squirt” Borders Jr., 45, of 1656 Friendship Road, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at his home. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Walls Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Craig officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church before the service. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Ostine Greene
SHELBY — Mrs. Ostine Whitaker Greene, 92, of White Oak Manor, formerly of 3914 W. Dixon Blvd. died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at her residence. A native of Cleveland County, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and a former Sunday school teacher at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. She enjoyed working in her yard and keeping in touch with friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Stowe and Ola Grigg Whitaker; her husband, Lloyd E. Greene; two brothers, Shull and Howard Whitaker; a sister, Luna Whitaker; and a son-in-law, Edwin Wray Cabiness. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd G. and Glenda Greene of Shelby; two daughters and a son-in-law, Elizabeth G. Cabiness and Myrna G. and Jack Hamrick Jr., all of Shelby; a brother, Vaughn Whitaker of Shelby; two sisters, Ruby Biddix and Blanche Davis, both of Shelby; three grandchildren and their spouses, Lisa Greene and Greg Goforth of York, S.C., and Lynn Greene and Keith Houser and Jeremy Hamrick, all of Shelby; and four great-grandchildren, Matthew and Miranda Goforth and Kelsey and Katelyn Brooke Houser. The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Pruitt and Dr. Paul Sorrells officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family received friends Sunday at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of Mrs. Edwin Cabiness on West Randolph Road. Memorials may be made to Beaver Dam Baptist Church, 123 Beaver Dam Church Road, Shelby, NC 28152.

Doris Davis
LAWNDALE — Mrs. Doris Blackburn Davis, 72, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. The funeral will be held tonight at 7:30 at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Williams officiating. A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Rose Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Reginal Dawkins officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the National Alzheimers Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60611.

Bertha Yarbro
VALE — Mrs. Bertha Ellen Sain Yarbro, 88, of 8342 W. Hwy. 21, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Grace Hospital. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Laurel Hill United Methodist Church with the Revs. George Wombough and Jim Scott officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Stamey Funeral Home. Roger Huss
CROUSE — Mr. Roger Dale Huss, 59, of 2363 Johnstown Road, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at his home. Born July 17, 1943, in Lincoln County, he was a retired dockworker with Carolina Freight Carriers Corp. of Cherryville where he worked for 30 years. He was a member of Bethpage Lutheran Church, and he was a Vietnam veteran and served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Noah Carse and Sarah Reep Huss. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Paulette Willis Huss of the home; a son, Travis Dale Huss of Crouse; two daughters, Stephanie Creighton and Melissa Huss, both of Crouse; seven brothers, Boyce Huss, Harry Huss, and Edwin Huss all of Crouse, and Bennett Reep, N.C. Huss Jr., Donald Huss, and Johnny Huss, all of Lincolnton; five sisters, Christine Dixon and Blanche Black, both of Crouse, Mabel Greene and Thelma Hoyle, both of Shelby, and Marie Sigmon of Cherryville; and two grandchildren, Harley and Miranda Creighton, both of Crouse. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bethpage Lutheran Church in Lincolnton with the Rev. John Bell officiating. Burial will follow at Bethpage Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 N. Cedar St., Lincolnton, NC 28092.

Charles Borders Jr.
SHELBY — Mr. Charles William “Squirt” Borders Jr., 45, of 1656 Friendship Road, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at his home. He was the son of Rosa Jackson Borders and the late Charles Borders Sr., and a native of Cleveland County. He was employed by PPG Industries for 23 years. He is survived by his wife, Salley Walls Borders; his mothers, Rosa Borders of Shelby; two sons, Kenneth Therome George and wife, Sonja of Garner, and Quinton Baker of Shelby; two daughters, Sterling George and Starla George Dowdle and husband, James, all of Shelby; seven brothers, Christopher Borders, Jarad McDowell, Bruce Borders, Hakeem Borders, Isaac Logan, Virgil Baccuh and John Logan, all of Shelby; two sisters, Jacqueline Hoey and husband, Bobby and Valerie Haynes and husband Vincent, all of Shelby; 10 grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Edward Walls and his wife, Earlene of Shelby, David Walls and his wife, Leanna of Kings Mountain, Floyd Walls of Philadelphia and Willie Walls of York, Pa.; sisters-in-law, Helen Early and husband, J.L. and Florine Mooring and husband Clinton, all of Charlotte; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Walls Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Craig officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church before the service. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

VALDESE — Mr. Stewart William “Slim” Wright, 80, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, in Morganton. Surviving are sons, Richard Wright and his wife, Theresa, of Sylva, Charles Wright and wife, Lynn, of Morganton, John Wright of Raleigh and James Wright and wife, Jennifer, of Valdese; daughters, Linda Alexander and husband, Ron, of Shelby, Susan Clark and husband, Edward, of Denver, Colo., and Alice Lail and husband, Joe, of Shelby. He also leaves behind a brother, George Wright of Newland; grandsons, Rick, Rod and Roger Wright, Michael Childers, Jeremy and Jonathan Wright, Benjamin Lail, Chris and Will Clark and Joshua Wright; granddaughters, Lindsey Alexander, Adrienne Lail, Tina Wright and Elizabeth Wright. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at High Peak Baptist Church with the Rev. James Sessions officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.
