Mretie Faye Pittman Taylor

Mretie Faye Pittman Taylor, 72, of Kenly passed away Thursday. Her funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Marsh Swamp Church Cemetery, 6664 Rock Ridge School Road, Sims. The Rev. Sam Cullifer and the Rev. Woody Parrish will officiate.
The family will receive friends 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.
Faye is survived by her son, Johnny W. Taylor and wife, Lori of Four Oaks; her daughter, Margaret T. Johnson and husband, Allen of Lucama; her grandchildren, Clifford Harwood and wife, Heather, Donna Taylor, Jamie Odom and husband, Daniel, April Blevins and husband, Josh and Cory Johnson; 8 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Bessie Pridgen and Alice Turner both of Wilson; special friend, Donnie Ellis and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Debra K. Taylor; parents, Wade and Annie Ellen Pittman; her brothers, Bill, Jay and Aaron Pittman; sisters, Mazzelle Bunn, Lessie Haynes and her twin sister, Shirley Pittman.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be directed in Faye’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
Oscar Powell Atkinson
September 23, 1942 – April 26, 2015
Oscar Powell Atkinson, 72, of Middlesex passed away Sunday, April 26, 2015 at the Vidant Inpatient Hospice House in Greenville. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Hollywood Cemetery, Middlesex. The Rev. Ricky Anderson will officiate.
The family will receive friends 7 – 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson and other times at the home, 7042 Antioch Church Road, Middlesex.
Oscar is survived by his brother, Jimmie “Jim” R. Atkinson of Wilson; his sister, Jean Strickland of Wendell; step-son, Robert Wayne Davis of Atlantic Beach; step-daughter, Dawn Davis Flora of the home; and two step-grandchildren, Hunter Wayne Davis and Dana Bryant.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Atkinson; his son, Oscar P. Atkinson, Jr.; his parents, William Oscar Atkinson and Nancy Narron Atkinson; his brother, Charles W. Atkinson; and his sisters, Edna Hopkins Phillips and Myrtle Deans.

Patty Stancil Whitfield
Jan. 21, 1928 – April 10, 2015
Patty Stancil Whitfield, 87, of Wilson died Friday. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday at Forest Hills Baptist Church, 1407 Forest Hills Rd Wilson; a visitation will follow the service. The Rev. Ray Barnhill and The Rev. Justin Deeter will officiate. A private graveside will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. in Maplewood cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 – 6 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway.
She is survived by her daughters; Annette W. Newton and husband Tommy of Clinton, and Joan W. Bartlett and husband Robert of Wilson; her son Billy Whitfield and wife Vickie of Wilson; granddaughters, Allison Bartlett of Wilson and Madison Whitfield also of Wilson; grandsons, J.T. Newton and wife Megan of Asheville, Whit Newton and wife Sarah of Raleigh, Will Newton of Chapel Hill, Reece Bartlett of Wilson and William Whitfield of Wilson; great-grandson Thomas Newton of Asheville; brother Ray Stancil and wife Muriel; sister-in-laws Janice Stancil and Dot Stancil all of Wilson. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of Ms. Pat’s caregivers throughout the years.

Rodney Gene Shaw, 50, of Nashville, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2015. His memorial service will be conducted 7 – 9 p.m. Sunday evening, May 17, 2015 at the Momeyer Ruritan Club, 4811 Momeyer Way, Nashville.
Rodney is survived by Kitty Evans, the love of his life; his mother, Diane Shaw of Rocky Mount; his step-daughter, Sherri Collie and husband, Neal of Nashville; his step-grandchildren, Sierra Collie and Brandon Collie both of Nashville, his sisters, Debbie Cone and husband, Dayton of Castalia and Wanda Dunbar of Rocky Mount and his nieces, Crystal Thorpe and husband, Walter Rocky Mount, Tonya Suarez and husband, Raymond of Richmond, Virginia, Brooke Huntington and husband, Ricky of Fayetteville and Kristy Norris and husband, Buddy of Black Stone Gap, Virginia.

September 5, 1972 – April 13, 2015
Roger Edwin Jones, 42, died peacefully Monday, April 13, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. His funeral service will be conducted 7 p.m. Thursday evening at Joyner’s Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Samaria Baptist Church Cemetery, 3752 Samaria Church Lane, Middlesex. The Rev. Reuben Cason and Rev. Paul Tedder will officiate.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening immediately following the service at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway.
Roger is survived by his wife, Emily Price Jones of the home, his sons, Blake Edwin Jones and Tucker Paul Jones both of the home; his parents, Donald and Pam Jones of Bailey; his sister, Donna Glover and husband, Tony of Elm City; his grandmother, Margaret Brantley of Bailey; his aunts, Gail Bailey and husband, Milt of Bailey and Debra Denton and husband, Dennis of Bailey; his in-laws, Danny and Sandra Price, Jamey and Michelle Price and Michael Horton all of Zebulon; his nieces and nephews, Dustin, Austin, Bradley, Katie and Kasey and his special dogs, Ranger and Suger.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, B.C. and Elsie Jones; his grandfather, Sam J. Brantley and uncle, Doug Brantley.

Stella Daniel Barnes
October 21, 1915 – May 1, 2015
Stella Daniel Barnes of the Brian Center of Wilson, formerly of Wiggins Mill Road in Lucama died Friday, May 1, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman G. Barnes in July of 1995. She is survived by her daughter, Justine B. Corbett and friend, Derek Bonshor; her son, Randy Barnes; her granddaughter, Brandy Broadway and her great-grandchildren, Barnes and Elizabeth Broadway.
After years of farming and working in the tobacco market, she enjoyed playing cards, golf, and traveling. She was active in Springhill Presbyterian Church where she was made a life member.
Visitation will be at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson, Saturday, May 2, 2015, between 2 and 4 p.m. There will be a private graveside service.
In lieu of food and/or flowers, a donation to the Building Fund, at Springhill Presbyterian Church, 7335 Springfield School Road, Lucama, NC 27851 or an organization of one’s choice would be appreciated.
Verna Lee Mattox
September 12, 1925 – April 18, 2015
Verna Lee Mattox, 89, of Wilson passed away Saturday. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at West Nash United Methodist Church, 2200 W. Nash Street, Wilson. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The Rev. Stuart Milton and the Rev. William Holliday will officiate.
The family will receive friends 7 – 9 p.m. Monday evening at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.
Verna is survived by a son, Gordon Mattox and grandson, Clayton; a daughter, Toni McKeel and son-in-law, Michael McKeel and grandsons, Brandon McKeel, Christopher McKeel (Abbie), and Nicholas McKeel (Jenna); two great-grandchildren, Mattox McKeel and Madilynn Grace McKeel; a sister, Doris Baxley of Rockingham; and a sister-in-law, Miriam Lamm of Kenly.
She was preceded in death by her husband of thirty-eight years, Thomas Mattox; her parents, Bruce and Minnie Lamm; two brothers, Gerald and Etheridge Lamm; and a sister, Margie Mercer.
Verna was a registered nurse and worked at Woodard Herring Hospital until the time in which she and her husband formed Tom’s Sausage Company which stayed in operation for forty-three years. Verna and her husband were charter members of West Nash United Methodist Church. She dearly loved her church and was an active member for fifty-five years until her death. Verna served as a role model to family and friends by her joyful and positive attitude in which she faced life’s many challenges. Through her caring and loving nature, her true Christian values were exemplified.

Margaret May Denton, 70, of Spring Hope passed away Tuesday. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday in Hayes Cemetery, Claude Lewis Road, Middlesex.

Margaret is survived by her husband, James Freddy Denton of the home; her daughter, Debby Denton of Raleigh; her sons, Paul Mathew Denton and wife, Jessie of Hannaford, North Dakota and Michael Denton and wife, Becky of Mapleton, Iowa; her step-son, Ricky Denton of and wife, Jeannette of Georgia; her granddaughters, Britnee Lewis, Ashley Brooks, Dana Brooks, Jade Denton and Savannah Denton; her grandsons, Noah Denton, Mathew Denton and James Denton II, her step-granddaughters, Chloe Melby and Ryan Denton; her step-grandsons, Bailey Melby, Bowdie Melby and Blane Melby, and her great-grandsons, Aydain Lewis and Zayn Lewis.
