C. Ray Morrison
SPINDALE — Mr. C. Ray Morrison, 96, of 501 Oakland Road, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. Born Oct. 4, 1905, a native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Ed Morrison and Annie Williams Morrison. He was the oldest member of Adaville Baptist Church in Spindale. He retired as supervisor from Stonecutter Mills after 47 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James Morrison; a son-in-law, Reid Jones Jr.; two brothers, Lex and Russell Morrison; and a sister, Lela Hutchins. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Elizabeth Wall Morrison of Spindale; two daughters, Betty Ray Jones of Forest City and Martha Yarborough of Gastonia; a son, Charles Morrison of Shelby; a brother, Grady Morrison of Union Mills; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Adaville Baptist Church with the Rev. James Daves and Dr. Charles Cobb officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. UNION MILLS — Mrs. Pauline Barnes Byrd, 89, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at White Oak Manor. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Crowe’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Nanney officiating. FOREST CITY — Mrs. Betty Jane Surratt, 55, of 157 McDaniel St., died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. SHELBY — Mrs. Mary Virginia Stroud, of 1804 Weaver Road, was born on Sept. 9, 1913, to the late John Wesley Briscoe and Mattie Camp Briscoe in Rutherford County. She departed this life Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in Shelby. She was a member of Brooks Chapel United Methodist Church in Polkville and the church choir. Mary Virginia Stroud was preceded in death by her parents, John Wesley Briscoe and Mattie Camp Briscoe; two sons, John S. Gidney and Charles Stroud Jr.; two brothers, Joseph Briscoe and Charles Briscoe; one sister, Odessa B. Hunt; two grandsons, Larry Hoey and Charles Hoey; and three great-grandsons. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Charles Stroud Sr.; four daughters, Carolyn Josey and Shirley Humphries and husband, Raleigh, of Shelby, Patricia Schenck and husband, Frank, of Lawndale and Nelline Hoey of Forest Ville, Md.; four sons, Edgar Stroud of Philadelphia, Willie Stroud and wife, Brenda, Calvin Stroud, and Avery Stroud and wife, Pattie, of Shelby; two sisters, Gladys Briscoe of Shelby and Lillian Flack of Hickory; three brothers, Paul Briscoe of Norfolk, Va., Marion Briscoe and wife, Bessie, and Milton Briscoe, all of Shelby; eight brothers and sisters-in-law and their spouses, Herbert and Chinetta Stroud, Thomas Stroud, Ada and Joey Bell, Alberta and George Roberson, Lena and William Pounds, Hazel and June Thomas, Ruby Stroud, and Perry Lee Stroud; 43 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Hattie Johnson
SHELBY — Ms. Hattie J. Boykins Toms Johnson, 70, formerly of 513 Suttle St., died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was a resident of Century Care Nursing Home in Shelby. She was the daughter of the late Waymon and Mary D. Shade Boykins and was born Sept. 9, 1931, in Rutherford County. She was a faithful member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church until her health failed, where she was a member of of the Usher Board, Senior Choir, Senior Missionary Department, and the Sunday School Department. She was retired from Fasco Controls, Inc. after 15 years and was previously employed by the Samuel B. Strain Family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ulysses S. Toms; a son, Ulysses Toms Jr.; a sister, Lizzie Boykins Thoms and two brothers, J.W. Boykins and James Boykins. She leaves to cherish fond memories two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby G. and Aileen Toms and Dwight and Linda Toms, both of Shelby; two daughters and a son-in-law, Helen Toms and James Flack of Kingstown and Barbara Toms Banks of Shelby; four brothers, L.C. Boykins of Forest City, Donald Boykins, Charles Boykins and Paul Boykins, all of Spindale; four sisters, Bernice Toms and Georgia Finney, both of Kingstown, Dorothy Boykins of Forest City and Mary Beam of Spindale; a daughter-in-law, Wylee Sellers Toms of Phenix City, Ala.; three stepsons and their spouses Johnny and Sally Johnson of Cherryville, Dennis Johnson of Shelby and Willie Mintz of Charlotte; four stepdaughters and their spouses, Shirley Johnson Cherry of Charlotte, Sarah Johnson and Diane and Bernard Weaver, all of Kingstown and Patricia and Ivan Surratt of Shelby; 41 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. HICKORY — Mrs. Emma Lou Fuller, 59, of 241 8th Ave., S.E., died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born April 27, 1943, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Lucendia Nivens Fuller. She was a former employee of Carolina Tables and member of Deliverance Hall Church of Jesus Christ, Missionary, and choir member. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Elie Fuller, Robert Fuller and Willie Albert Fuller; and a sister, Bertha Lou Fuller. She is survived by two daughters, Donna Marie Fuller and Lynnette Marie Fuller, both of the home; a granddaughter, Crystal Fuller of the home; a grandson, Christopher Fuller of the home; two brothers, Lloyd Fuller of Hickory and Sammie Fuller of Lenoir; two sisters-in-law, Tressie Fuller and Ola B. Fuller, both of Hickory; an uncle, J.C. Fuller of Hickory; and many other relatives and friends. Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late C.E. and Blanche Moss Allen. A self-employed truck driver, he had served in the Army in the Korean conflict. He belonged to Allen Memorial Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Hardin Allen of the home; two sons and their wives, Ricky Gene Allen and Joyce of Fountain Inn, S.C., and Timmy Mark Allen and Dena of Kings Mountain; a brother and his wife, James F. and Shirley Allen of Grover; a sister and her husband, Carlene Allen Enfinger and Phil of Augusta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Shane Allen and his wife, Leanne, of Lakenheath Air Base, Cambridgeshire, England, Jenna Allen Ross and her husband, Garvis, of Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico, and Tyler Mark Allen of Kings Mountain; six great-grandchildren, Judah, Allahia and Isabella Allen and Keegan, Anthony and Athena Ross. ELLENBORO — Mr. John Norman Davis Sr., 76, of Emma Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Gertrude Whitaker Davis. He retired from Kemet Corp, was a World War II Navy veteran and belonged to Race Path Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Freida Lavonne Davis; a sister, Marjorie Smith; and two brothers, Garland F. “Tommy” Davis and Leslie Leburn Davis. He is survived by two sons, John N. “Johnny” Davis Jr. of Shelby and James Lee “Jimmy” Davis and his wife, Suzi Cook Davis of Ellenboro; one granddaughter, Sierra Elizabeth Davis of Ellenboro’ his former wife, Betty McAlister Davis of Shelby; two brothers, Robert E. “Buck” Davis of Rutherfordton and Ernest Davis of Griffin, Ga.; four sisters, Merle Bagwell of Spartanburg, S.C., Mildred Shearrin of Newport News, Va., Mary Morgan of Fayetteville and Karen Staten of Naples, Fla. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Mrs. Geraldine Rathbone Hollifield, 61, of 1102 W. Gold St. Ext., died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Dewey Vinson and Carol Dona Dorsey Rathbone. She retired from Kemet and was a former employee of Fiber Industries. She attended Family Worship Center Church of God in Kings Mountain and Central Church of God in Charlotte. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Denise Lambert and a sister, Virginia Sims. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Hollifield; a son, Blaine Hollifield; four brothers, Steve Rathbone, Doug Rathbone, Bobby Rathbone and Paul Rathbone; and a sister, Belinda Adams, all of Kings Mountain. SHELBY — Mr. Dever Donald Watkins, 75, of 204 Victory Lane, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was born in Spindale, the son of the late Edward and Pansy Morris Watkins. He retired from the textile industry and served in the Army. He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dean Watkins of Shelby, Jerry and Kelley Watkins of Kannapolis and Mark and Bonnie Watkins of Charleston; a daughter, Rhonda Watkins of Shelby; a special friend and companion, Carolyn Bolin of Shelby; three sisters, Rachael Haynes and Fern McIntyre of Rutherfordton and Lavelle McDaniel of Charlotte; and 10 grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Ollis Harris Memorial Chapel at Harris Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ervin Price officiating.
