Oak Island — Elizabeth (Betty) Arlene Howenstein
Elizabeth (Betty) Arlene Howenstein was born
Sept. 5, 1927, the only child, of Kathleen and Vincent Ryan (deceased) from Schenectady, NY. She passed at home with her family by her side on Monday, January 20, 2014.
Betty was married to her best friend, Frank Howenstein, for 58 years until his death in 2008. Betty was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and the Woman’s Rosary Society, in Schenectady then joined Sacred Heart Church when they relocated to Southport, NC. She worked for Schenectady City Clerk’s office and Schenectady Public School System. She was preceded in death by an infant son.
Betty is survived by one daughter Mary Beth Knoblauch and her husband Gene Knoblauch of Oak Island, a granddaughter Noelle of Wilmington, NC; a grandson Ryan Knoblauch and his wife Bethany and two great — grandchildren Hunter and Micah of Concord, NC.
The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Reverend Trent Watts officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.
The family would like to thank Dosher Nursing Center and the wonderful staff who cared for her for four years, until September when she moved back home with her daughter and son in law.

Ida Sraver Adams
Southport — Ida Sraver Adams, 89 of Southport, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014 at Dosher Nursing Center.
Mrs. Adams was born
July 6, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland the daughter of the late William Sraver and Ida Hoffmester Sraver. Raised in Baltimore, she lived in many areas of the country while her husband was living. Previously she had lived in Upper Jay, New York and had lived in Southport since 1998. During WWII, she was a real life “Rosie the Riveter”, having worked for Glenn L. Martin Aircraft factory in Middle River, Maryland. Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her husband Donald Adams; four brothers, Albert Ender, Brantner Sraver, Raymond Sraver, and her twin brother Charles Sraver; and a sister Theresa Jones.
Surviving is her brother William Sraver Jr. and wife Maureen of Boiling Spring Lakes; a sister Anna Mae Albright and husband Richard of Maryland; several nieces and nephews including Charles Sraver and wife Carol, Linda K. Sandgren and husband Eric, Bonnie Leupkes and husband Michael all of Maryland, and Charlene Fitzpatrick and husband Carl of New Mexico.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Southport. Inurnment will be in Willsboro, New York.

Samuel Wesley Holden, Sr.
Southport — Samuel Wesley Holden, Sr. 94 of Southport passed away on January 15, 2014 at Ocean Trail Nursing Center in Southport.
Mr. Holden was born
April 17, 1919 in Southport, the son of the late Robert Wesley Holden and Mamie Carrier Holden Hood. He was raised in Southport and was a veteran of the US Navy having served in WWII. He had formerly been a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Mr. Holden had worked for the Cape Fear River Pilots, Stone Towing as tug boat captain and American Oil in Wilmington. He was preceded in death by his wife Edna “Peggy” Holden and a brother William Campbell Holden.
Surviving is one son Samuel Wesley Holden, Jr. of Puyallup, Washington; four grandchildren; twelve great — grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
At Mr. Holden’s request no services will be held.

Charles Thelbert “Chuck” Kinney
Boiling Spring Lakes — Charles Thelbert “Chuck” Kinney
Charles Thelbert “Chuck” Kinney, 75 of Boiling Spring Lakes, passed away on Friday, January 17, 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Mr. Kinney was born
March 16, 1938 in Peoria, Illinois to the late Thelbert C. and Mary M. Janssen Kinney. He was a graduate of Peru High School in Peru, NY. Mr. Kinney was a member of the Peru Hall of Fame. He still holds the New York state record for the most points scored in a high school basketball game with 98 points. Mr. Kinney graduated from RPI with a degree in civil engineering. He was the former owner of the Olde Brunswick Store and also owned BSL Mini Storage. Mr. Kinney was an avid golfer.
Surviving is his wife Joan Gilbert Kinney; two daughters Kristen E. Johnson of Boiling Spring Lakes, and Kimberly A. Sullivan and husband John of Monroe; three step — daughters Veronica Auger and husband Edward Foley of Warminster, PA, Rebecca D. Garrett of Trinity, TX, and Kimberly G. Helms and husband Smitty of Monroe; a brother, William Higgins and wife Do of NY; three sisters Mary Kay Lange and husband Ken of IL, Nancy Lemish and husband Don, and Patricia Bast and husband Dan all of VA; nine grandchildren, Tyler Johnson and wife Cassandra, Kaitlin Johnson, Garret Johnson, Victoria Johnson, Paige Buffkin, Kyle Buffkin, Carol Anne Buffkin, Garrett Helms, and Hunter Helms; and one great — grandson Chase Buffkin.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in the Peacock – Newnam & White funeral service Chapel with Rev. Jeff Saggus officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:30 to 6:00 pm prior to the service.

Helen Faulk Mathis Borders
Southport — Helen Faulk Mathis Borders, age 63, born
in Marion, South Carolina on December 20, 1950, after a long battle with health problems, went to be with the Lord whom she loved so much, on January 13, 2014.
Helen had many friends and loved to be with people. She will be missed terribly. She was a graduate of Southport High School and taught Preschool at Southport Baptist Church for several years. Helen was preceded in death by her dad, Bill Faulk; brothers, Sam and Richard Faulk, and daughter, Beth Mathis.
Surviving are her husband, Allen Borders; her mother, Barbara Faulk; one son, Chris Mathis and Johnsie his fiancé; grandson, Richard Perry Mathis.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 8, 2014 in the Southport Baptist Church Chapel with Reverend Eugene Tomlinson officiating.

Marie Thumm Gower
Southport — Marie Thumm Gower, age 99, of Southport passed away Monday, January 13, 2014 at her home.
Mrs. Gower was born
in Davenport, Iowa on November 23, 1914, daughter of the late John Michael and Inez Peterson Thumm. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 63 years, Hugh T. Gower.
There will be no local services. Burial will be in the Mound View Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

Maria Hansen
Oak Island — Maria Hansen, age 88, of Oak Island passed away Monday, January 13, 2014 at Dosher Nursing Center in Southport.
Mrs. Hansen was born
May 21, 1925 in Vienna, Austria, daughter of the late Franz and Cecelia Kostal Hager. She resided in Horizon City, Texas before moving to Oak Island in 2006. She was a member of Oak Island Moose Lodge and served with the Ladies Auxiliary as well as a member of Oak Island VFW Post 10226 and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Mrs. Hansen was preceded in death by her husband Albert Worth Hansen, Sr. in 1999 and one sister.
Survivors include one son, Albert Worth Hansen, Jr. of the Philippines; one daughter Shirley M. Chism and husband Kenon Taylor Chism of Oak Island; six grandchildren, Brian Michael Chism, Keith Taylor Chism, Sarah Marie Lowry, Jessie Alan Chism, Matthew Tyler Chism, and Albert Worth Hansen, III; and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Peacock — Newnam & White funeral service Chapel in Southport with Pastor Fred Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Ft. Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, Texas.
