Barbara J. Berard
Southport — Barbara Berard picBarbara J. Berard, 63, of Southport, NC, formerly of Altoona, PA went to be with the Lord on February 20th after a courageous 6 month battle with leukemia.
Barbara was born
in Johnstown, PA, daughter of Patrick and Patricia (Johns) McGrath on December 18th, 1950. She graduated from Altoona Area High School in 1968 and received a bachelor’s degree in education at Kent State University in 1972. She married Richard Berard in June of 1975. She is a retired teacher from the Altoona Area School District. Following her retirement, she continued to teach at Brunswick Community College.
Barbara is preceded in death by her father Patrick McGrath and Brother David McGrath.
Surviving are her husband, Richard Berard, a son Anthony and wife Tracy of Morrisville, PA, a daughter Susan Yanief and husband David of Wexford, PA; a sister Susan Krenicky of Kimberton, PA; a brother Thomas of Duncansville, PA; her mother Patricia of Hollidaysburg and three granddaughters Kristen, Candace, and Jonni Ann.
Barbara is a member of Ocean View United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling. She liked to spend time outdoors with her golden retriever, Dudley.
A memorial service will be held at 12 noon Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Peacock — Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jim Shaver officiating.
Family and friends will be received one hour prior to the service from 11:00 to 12:00 at Peacock — Newnam & White Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to SECU Hospice House of Brunswick at 955 Mercy Lane SE, Bolivia, NC 28422 in Barbara’s memory.

Eileen C. Stewart
Southport — Eileen C. Stewart, 91 of Southport, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 after a long, brave battle with oral cancer.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Craig W. Stewart and daughter, Toni A. Stewart.
Mrs. Stewart leaves behind two daughters, Bonnie Rossi and husband, Peter of Westborough, MA and Nancy Dazy and husband, Alan of Annville, PA and a son Craig W. Stewart, Jr. and wife Stephanie of Southport, North Carolina as well as 8 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
She was greatly loved and admired and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Services will be private.

Eva Jane Hayes
Boiling Spring Lakes — Eva Jane Hayes, age 78, of Boiling Spring Lakes died Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport.
Mrs. Hayes was born
on March 11, 1935 in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, daughter of the late Frank and Mae Burleson Randolph. She loved animals, going to yard sales to look for many antiques, and assisting with Hope Harbor. Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by three sons, a baby at birth, David Hayes, and Anthony Hayes, a daughter Teri Hayes, and one brother Bud Randolph.
Survivors include two daughters, Frances “Midge” Morris and husband Tommy of Abingdon, Maryland and Tracy Kelley and significant other James Ivey of Boiling Spring Lakes; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:00am Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Peacock — Newnam & White funeral service Chapel with Reverend Rodney Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Cape Fear Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 5 — 7pm Friday, February 21, 2014 at Peacock — Newnam & White funeral service in Southport.

Phyllis Marie Metcalf
Southport — Phyllis Marie Metcalf, 82 of Southport, passed away on Friday, February 14, 2014 in the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick.
Ms. Metcalf was born
March 15, 1931 in Covington, Virginia, the daughter of the late James O. Rowsey and Ollie Tucker Rowsey. She moved to Southport in 1987 and was a homemaker, and most importantly a loving mother and Nana to each of her grandchildren. Ms. Metcalf was preceded in death by her former husband Robert A. Metcalf, Sr. a brother James Rowsey, and an infant sister Shirnell Rowsey.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Allen Metcalf, Jr. and wife Connie of San Diego, California, and James David Metcalf; two daughters, Pat Aderhold and husband Rainey and Cheryl Metcalf and Bob Grant, all of Southport; seven grandchildren, Courtney Aderhold, Robert Aderhold, Jessica Player, Allen Michael Jefferson, Daisy Claveron, Abigail Timbol, and Allison Metcalf; and two great — grandchildren Paul Bryant Decuna and Kira Paige Aderhold.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, February 21, 2014 in the Peacock – Newnam & White funeral service Chapel with Reverend Ronnie Cox officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick for the excellent care given to Ms. Metcalf and the support given to each of her family members during her illness.

Beatrice Elizabeth Christian
Boiling Spring Lakes — Beatrice Elizabeth Christian
Beatrice Elizabeth Christian, 93, of Boiling Springs Lakes, died peacefully on February 10, 2014 at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick with her family at her side.
Bea was born
in Providence, Rhode Island on May 7, 1920. She was the only child of William R. Dunphy and Beatrice Elizabeth Felton. After graduating high school in 1939, The Providence Journal awarded her a full scholarship to The Rhode Island School of Design in Providence which she attended for two and one half years. She married Joe Christian of Monroe City, Missouri in Providence in 1947.
After Joe’s retirement from the US Navy, the family moved to Houston, Texas, where Joe accepted a job in the lumber industry. They eventually relocated to Eugene, Oregon and eventually to North Carolina, where they settled after Joe’s retirement from The Georgia Pacific Corporation. During their time in Texas, Bea worked for various companies as a bookkeeper.
Wherever she lived, Bea was an active quilter and seamstress. She handmade most of her daughters’ clothing and made countless items, both practical and artistic, which she gave to family and friends. Her generosity extended to giving over a hundred handmade quilts to The Ronald McDonald House and pillow cases for a local Women’s Shelter. She was also proud to be an Honorary Member of The Beach Quilter’s Club of Long Beach.
She is survived by her husband, Joe; daughters Jo — Ann Leaf and her partner Daniel Gould of Falmouth, Massachusetts and Suzann and Robbie Jones of Southport, North Carolina; grandchildren Jason Leaf of Palm Springs, California, Michell Hartung of Uncasville, Connecticut, Chrystal Causey of Long Beach, North Carolina and Mackenzie Jones of Southport. Surviving great — grandchildren are Ashleigh, Alyson and Abigail Hartung and Trevor Causey.
A memorial service will be at 1:00 pm Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Peacock — Newnam & White funeral service Chapel in Southport.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00pm at the funeral home.

Dinah L. Wescott
Boiling Spring Lakes — Dinah L. Wescott passed away on February 10, 2014 at the age of 70.
One of Dinah’s great features, and there were many, was that her smile would light up a room. She never met a stranger, and was well — known within the community. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Dinah will be sorely missed.
Surviving are E. Vaughan Towers of the home; daughter, Michelle Kesmodel; son, Marty Kesmodel, Jr., both of Boiling Spring Lakes; a step — daughter, Theresa Baldwin wife of Terry Baldwin of Bally, Pennsylvania; five step — sons from a previous marriage; sister, Linda Fanning of Lebanon, Tennessee; brother, Wayne Dockery of Charlotte, North Carolina; 13 grandchildren and seven great — grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 1:00 pm Monday, February 17, 2014 at Peacock — Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Doug White officiating.
There will be a reception catered by Coastal Catering following the service.
